I'm going to copy and paste my post here because, well... evidence... I have no health problems relating to diet coke...:
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've been drinking diet coke for about 25 years, and not just "once in a while" so I just did a quick calculation on how many cans I have drunk over that time. I drink anything between 7 and 14 cans a week so I've probably consumed between 63,875 and 127,750 cans of diet coke or at least 21 thousand litres (if my maths is accurate ). My favourite snack is crisps, I never crave sweeter things and I'm not addicted to artificial sweetener...Aspartame hasn't been proven to be or not be a carcinogen. However, the high controversy surrounding it and the claims that have been made against it are enough to make a person stop and question if the risk is really worth it. Diet Coke also contains phosphoric acid, which can significantly increase your risk of kidney disease and and urinary issues. In general, it's best to avoid 1) products with an excessively long list of ingredients and/or vague ingredients (such as "natural flavors" or "artificial flavors"), and 2) highly processed products. Just because the FDA approves it doesn't mean it belongs in our bodies- American food contains ingredients that have been banned in other countries altogether.
I've also noticed that once someone stops drinking sodas or eating junk food, the cravings go away. A much healthier sweet drink is iced tea (the leaf kind, not the powdered crap) with honey (best raw). Calories are far from being the only factor in staying healthy.
So.Much.Fear.Mongering!!! You know that other countries sell diet coke too? It's not just the bad old U S of A trying to poison their diet coke drinking citizens. And I have no cravings so no need to stop drinking diet coke. I also eat junk food. No cravings from that either...
But, feel free to not drink diet coke, more for the rest of us.9 -
I enjoy the new pepsi max with ginger mmmmm. I do not like the taste of diet colas (I like a glass of regular sugared up cola if I needs more carbs) in general though. Prefer diet ginger ale or tonic water instead when I fancy something fizzy.1
-
Massive YES to the Diet Coke. And Dr Pepper Zero (that's how they brand it in the UK - weird).
Diet Pepsi/Pepsi Max will do in a pinch.
But Diet Cherry Coke is problematic for me. Makes me shaky and paranoid. Very odd!
Coke Zero Cherry is fine, Pepsi Max Cherry is fine. Who knows. Who cares when there are so many other tasty, caffeinated zero-calorie beverages to include in my life

Except there is NO SUCH EVIDENCE.
On the other hand THERE IS EVIDENCE that it is absolutely fine.
Cancer etc. :
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12180494
http://www.efsa.europa.eu/de/topics/topic/aspartame
And the coffin nail as to people reporting health effects from it:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25786106
All of your arguments are based on baseless fear. Especially the "American food contains things that are banned in other countries" part. French cheese is banned in the US. Bans on foods are rarely based on actual evidence and rather on - drumroll please - baseless fear.10 -
It's just processed sugar water. Won't kill you, but if other things are off, it will kill you
As I said before.

A great article on the subject
Just because her blog is hosted at Harvard doesn't make it scientific.7 -
You're right. Diet Coke contains Aspartame. Which is probably worse than sugar.
When I was typing my first post I had regular Coke on the brain
Except it's been studied so much and nothing has been proven that it's worse. https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1308408/why-aspartame-isnt-scary

What do you all think?
Neither friend nor foe. Neither regular or diet sodas are "healthy. That being said, I always opt for the lower calorie option. A couple things to keep in mind.
- Make sure you're drinking enough water, don't replace it with Diet Coke
- As far as aspartame, you'd need to drink a crap ton for it to be a problem.
- One positive aspect is the carbonation helps you feel full. Personally I opt for sparkling water instead.3 -

"Probably" worse than sugar. You don't actually know, but you're willing to commit to a high probability that it's worse than sugar...based on what, exactly?
It's from a lab, not nature. Haven't you learned that anything from a lab is bad???????????
My parents said I came from a lab, but they still love me.
I almost pissed myself when I read this! Too funny!3 -

Diet coke is mostly water tho.5 -
I loved Diet Coke!! Until I went to Haiti I had one a day. They don’t have them in Haiti (they need calories!) After a week without one, my tendinitis completely disappeared. I had struggled with it for 2 years. I was convinced and I don’t really miss it. I have coffee, tea, milk and water. No biggie and I feel better. I haven’t noticed any change in weight loss.8

Tell your husband to consider how many millions of gallons of diet coke that have been consumed over the decades it has been available...If it actually caused any of these issues, it would be well documented and people would not buy it. There would be nothing to debate. Also ask how something with zero calories would make you gain weight.
Yah. You may think nothing is wrong when a 3rd of all american adults are obese.
LMAO oh yeah nothing is wrong

No, it's not healthy. It's basically a bunch of chemicals mixed together to be sinfully addictive & wonderful. I'm a believer in real, organic food, but I'm addicted to diet mt dew....I allow myself one a day. We can't be saints. Everything in moderation.13

Actually not - most diet sodas are 97 or 98% water with the rest being those nasty nasty chemicals that eveyrone rails about...
Ingredient list for diet coke:
carbonated water, caramel color, aspartame, phosphoric acid, potassium benzoate (to protect taste), natural flavors, citric acid, caffeine.
please, where are the nasty chemicals?!?!?4 -
It depends on your own medical conditions. For example, if you have renal disease, then diet coke is a big foe since its acid of choice is phosphoric acid. In normal people the kidneys filter out excess phosphorus, but when you have kidney disease it builds up over time, which can lead to hardening of muscles or organs.1

Literally everything that exists in the known universe is "a bunch of chemicals mixed together".
Since your Diet Mt Dew is not healthy, how is that affecting you? In what way are you experiencing it harming you?5 -
Coke Zero Sugar. Friend. Best friend. Especially with rum and lime.7

I drink one everyday almost......about to drink one as we speak.....keeps me full because I practice Intermittent Fasting. It's not as bad as crossfit, but I have mention it to everyone LOL.2

True. In order to get it without caffeine, I buy caffeine free diet Pepsi and add a few drops of cherry Kool-Aid flavor drops.
OMG. I actually keep kool-aid flavor drops in my desk at work, in both grape and cherry, because I'm really an 8-year-old in a 40-year-old's body. So I just squirted some of the cherry in my coke zero sugar, and it's amazing. Life-changing.2 -
Buy a soda stream. Literally a life saver and game changer. Not to mention, no more cans and bottles in the landfill or recycle bin. I just carbonate water and add lemon to it, and I haven't craved pop since. I hate the taste of artificial sweeteners, it's not sweet and it makes me crave carbs and sugar and other bad things.
It's usually the bubbles that make it taste good anyways. Save the environment and end the conversation with your husband. I got mine for under 50 bucks, making it a very sound investment.1 -

I live on diet ginger ale. No calories, no sugar. About 4 a day, then seltzer to fill the rest. I just need something carbonated. Lost a ton and maintained for years.1

How is drinking diet soda going to lead to obesity? Routinely going over TDEE by overeating & drinking calorific drinks leads to obesity.4 -
Diet soda is my friend...
Day: Diet Dr. Pepper
Night: Diet A&W Root Beer (so sweet it's like dessert)0
