Not sure what my plan is today. My hubby says he wants to walk with me after work but he's been saying this 2 weeks and has yet to muster up the energy after work to get out the door. IF he does, I'm wondering if he'll mind if I run home after (because we were gonna drive the mile over and walk the park area - if we walked the mile over he'd be ready to turn back immediately and the walk over isn't particularly nice!) So I don't know. Figure something out.
You could run the mile and meet him a the park. Then walk with him, then run the mile home.
I usually walk a whole mile before I run anyway. I seem to need a super long warmup. But a couple run laps around the lake and then home will be good. My last two runs were super sucky so I'm hoping today is better1 -
Thanks for the advice everyone!0

girlinahat wrote: »I have another goal for the month, and that is no alcohol. Yesterday I woke up tired from a night out to celebrate my birthday (it's today!!) and pretty much canned ALL of my plans. Not stupidly hungover, but just didn't do anything. I don't drink excessively all the time, but can have weekends where I don't do what I want to do, get tired, and don't meet my running goals. So I'm having a month off alcohol to see what it does to my body. It won't be a permanent change as I like the odd beer, cocktail or glass of wine, but it will be nice to have a break.
@girlinahat Happy birthday!!!! I have the same "Sober October" goal. I think my glass (or two) of wine with dinner (topped with runger) is keeping me from loosing the last 10 pounds. I am giving up alcohol this month to see if I can get the scale moving again. My weight has been stuck since July.2 -
I think I will join this month too. I meant to join before the month started, but oh well. Goal for the month is 75 miles and to stay injury-free. I plan to continue running every other day with a longer run on the weekend.
October 1 - 8.15 miles
October 2 - off
Hopefully I will learn how to make a ticker by the end of the month too!5 -
150 posts behind already!
My October goal is 110 miles.
I got off to a good start yesterday running 12 miles on the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin, on my way back from visiting my son at Marquette University. It was a beautiful day for a great run.
October Progress:
12/110 miles
The weekend prior I ran a trail half marathon. It was in a park in Minneapolis and was about 70% single track, 15% paved, and 15% wide-*kitten* trail. It was not a good race for me at all. I hadn't trained for it (I hadn't even run that far since April), I hadn't gotten much sleep (two night before I slept all of 1 hour because of work), and perhaps the biggest factor, it was HOT. At least it was hot for Minnesota in late September. The heat index was 90F by the time I finished. If that wasn't bad enough, the heat also messed with the kegs and the beer line was HUGE and the beer barely cooler than ambient.
My time was 2:45. I probably walked 25 to 35 percent of the course. It just kicked my *kitten*. Still, it was a great course and I enjoyed it. I just wish my time would have been better.
My trail run yesterday felt much better, and though it wasn't the HM distance, it was at a faster pace with an HR 17 BPM lower than the race. In two weeks I'll get to try a trail HM again. Hopefully I do much better.

OMG, 6 pages already. Why am I not surprised! Lol. I am woefully behind, because I haven't been able to run, and it's really bumming me out. Ugh.
My self-diagnosis of IT Band Syndrome was correct, and I have my first PT session scheduled for Wednesday at lunch time. I ran the Bronx 10 Miler a week ago yesterday, first 4 miles were mostly ok, miles 5-10 I was in pain, and the last mile was a real struggle, as it was radiating up my thigh and down my shin, and just not feeling good at all. Didn't run all last week, but went out for a short 3 miles on Saturday, b/c I was in the middle of helping to go through my grandma's house, who had just passed, and I just NEEDED to run. Sadly, it started hurting after only the first mile. The rest of me just wanted to keep running!
So, I'm going to try to get some PT and do some cross-training. I'll ask the physical therapist as well, but does anyone have recommendations for good cross-training to help maintain conditioning, that is ok with ITBS? Trying to stay positive and not bummed, but I'm feeling pretty down about this, since my first ever marathon is in about a month and a half and I had been doing so well with training and conditioning. I'm so afraid of losing a lot of the progress I've made.
Anyway, sorry for the pity party, I just needed to vent a little bit! I hope everyone is doing amazing!!!

Great job @7lenny7 I love the pictures.
@KatieJane83 sorry for the ITBS diagnosis but at least you know what it is and will get a plan to fix it.
I'm really struggling this week with Skip's XC Coach. They are on Fall break this week and last night he tells me to tell the team that he's having practice today (which is fine) BUT that he wants the girls to run 50 miles this week and the boys 60 and on Saturday he will have a practice of hill repeats. SO today's practice was 4 miles that leaves 5 days for the the girls to run almost 50 miles, so 10 miles a day with no break. I told Skip not only no but hell no. At practice they run about 24 to 27 a miles a week, suddenly he wants them to run DOUBLE what they normally run at practice. Her friend is brand new to the team and her mom called me last night, I said no just no. He'll be wondering on Monday why everyone is hurt.
He insists they need more stamina, in my opinion they need shorter distances at race pace. Gotta get their little legs moving faster not longer. Some of them can run the 9 or 10 miles (maybe 6 of them including Skip), but 90% of the team can barely run 5 miles in an hour. I've mentioned to him quite a few times about the 10% rule, he's the same coach that wants them to run 500 between June 1 and August 1, another no.
Ugh! Sorry just venting.3 -
10/01 - Rest
10/02 - 10 miles Z2
Summer Goal: Get my marathon pace below 9 minutes.
Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
10/14/2017 - Stop, Drop, and Run - Fireman style obstacle course - 5km
10/14/2017 - HAWAIIANS LOVE S.P.A.M. (Skin Protection Against Melanoma)
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
UGH. You know how battle plans never survive contact with the enemy? Sometimes running is like that. The plan was to take the hilly path, and get like 7 or 9 miles of hills and be back to my desk in something like a reasonable time. WELL, I get a couple miles out and my bowels start telling me they are ready to do their thing. And soon. I am in the middle of a neighborhood and seriously was evaluating bushes, but thankfully I knew there was a public park nearby so said a quick prayer and pushed to the park. Made it bearly, but ugh. Killed my time, distance and hill plans.
Ah well. Got 10 miles in with a brief break in the middle. Still beats sitting at my desk!6 -
It's nice to see some things never change. It's just the second day of the month and this thing is already on page 6, probably page 7 by the time I submit this post.
Low goal for me. Not even sure why I am putting a mileage target at all, other than to have a ticker. Trying to start adding in some short runs to replace a walking session on my workout days.
For the familiar faces who don't know, I've been focused on strength training with some HIIT cardio since late July. I wound up doing that after focusing on sprint/5k efforts back in June. I found some nice results in the weight loss department, the change served me well. My plan was to add running back in after a while as I could while not feeling I had to slow down with the strength workouts. I think I like the idea of a strong base and running on top of that. Not body builder or anything like that. Just naturally strong.
I did my first run attempt today, doing a short mile to test out how things felt. My lower back was kaput a half mile in. The deadlifts and squats today were heavy and I have no doubt this was a new stimulus to my system, especially there. I did a fair amount of walking the last half mile to keep things safe. Finished the distance in 15 minutes which is what I was doing in the spring on those hills. So that was interesting.

October Running Totals (miles)
10/1 – rest day
10/2 – 5.07 easy
October running total to date – 5.07
Nominal challenge goal: 100 miles
Real goals: Get healthy enough to run 5 days a week. Avoid re-injury. Build base.
Today's notes – After yesterday's precautionary rest day, this morning the ankle let me do all my non-running exercises. It still isn't truly healthy, but it wasn't bothering me like yesterday. So I got out about noon in sunshine and 64º F (18º C) temperature to run 5 miles. The first mile, I wondered if I'd make it 2 miles on that ankle. Then it settled down. By the time I was running the 5th mile, I felt like I could go 6 miles easily.
But I ran 5 easy miles on Saturday, and Sunday I needed a rest day. So I stopped at 5. Time enough to run 6 miles after I've demonstrated the ability to run 5 miles and still run the next day.
Current thinking is I won't run any races in October. The club will want me to run the USATF Masters 5K Cross Country Championship on October 15 and the USATF Masters 15K (road) Championship on October 28; at this point, I'm not willing to commit to running hard in 2 weeks or running threshold for 15K in 4 weeks. And if I put myself in a race environment, I'll end up running harder than I planned for recovery.

October 3 - 16 km
Total km - 48 km out of 350 km7 -
I'm in for 40 miles in 16 runs.

How lucky for me that I stumbled onto this while looking for motivation to get back in shape after recovering from surgery. I would love to join, my goal for October is 50 miles.
10/2 - 2.5 mi
Total - 2.5/508 -
10/1: 5.16km

Much slower and tougher pace today, think 4 days on the go is my limit for now - it’s only month two back on the MFP case!
October goal - 10.33/60 kms
@carolineb81 well done on your first double figures run! Hope I can be back there with you soon! I’ve never done the London marathon but have a few friends who have entered, happy to ask for some outsider knowledge for you?
@girlinahat happy (belated) birthday! Running on Dartmoor sounds like a dream.2 -

@WhatMeRunning glad to see you back! And glad to hear the change in your workouts are serving you well!
@skippygirlsmom it's a good thing Skip has a mom who knows better! It sounds like the coach is nuts.
@garygse looking forward to the race report. Kick some but on the course!
@RespectTheKitty I never have trouble sleeping. Ever. But I am sleep deprived. I'll often run at night, shower, eat, then go straight to bed.
@JessicaMcB that looks like awesome race weather! And I'll take omelets over pancakes any day.
@MNLittleFinn it's w-a-a-a-a-y to early to be looking at the forecast for your race, LOL! The weather guessers have a hard time getting it right a week out, much less 19 days out. I don't bother looking until a week out, and don't start putting any stock in the forecast until 3 days out. And cleaning shoes...take out the insoles and laces and toss them in the washing machine on delicate with a couple of old towels. Air dry. Some trail runners take odd pride in keeping their shoes muddy but you'll extend the life if you keep them clean. Some places will tell you not to put them in the wash, but if the shoes can handle the pounding of running they can certainly handle the delicate cycle.
@hedkell the last time I was in the UAE I joined some hashers for a hash "run". it was 119°F so it was a fairly relaxed run. That suited me though, since I wasn't a runner at the time. We spent most of the time at the hotel beer drinking afterwards, as hashers do.
@katharmonic congrats on a great race in spite of your tumble! Here's to a quick recovery!
@Elise4270 noooooooo!!!! That had to be quite the sinking feeling...sorry3 -

um... registering for that race you know about.... LOL... Though I'm CONSIDERING registering for a November 4 race too...... I hate the final few weeks before a big event...0 -

Yeah, I know.
I hear that Nov 4th race is pretty good, but I'm always hunting that weekend, so I'll probably never run it.

Have any of you had your posts not get posted right away, pending approval of some sort? I just tried to post one and was told it would need to pass a review. I've never had that happen before.
Nevermind...I see it finally posted.
And I found out that if you edit a reviewed post, it has to go back for reviewing again...1 -
@katharmonic That was a fantastic PR. Congtrats!!!0

First treadmill miles ... Fall has arrived in New England!

Thank you all for the congrats on my race, and sympathies on my fall! Really appreciated. I felt better than expected today. My knees are very tender but my legs are otherwise good. Surprisingly so. My ribs are the sorest part, when breathing deeply or coughing. A good night's sleep last night really helped, so I'm going to try to repeat that tonight.1
-
@skippygirlsmom that is a huge distance jump for him to spring on XC kids at the last minute. While I am pro all the miles for stamina building with built in speedwork I think its inappropriate for the teams' purposes. Its not like he's going to be sending Skip and company to 26.2+ races! Speed work on its own sounds more prudent to me as well fwiw
@7lenny7 love the pictures, a pity about the suboptimal temp on the brew though

Ok - took off a month after racing season ended, and I'm slowly returning to the grind. Decided to go the coach route after barely missing a kona (Full Ironman World Championship) slot at my full ironman race. Still, coach is pretty swim focused with his plans (with much less running than usual), so putting down for a nominal goal of 130 miles this month.
10/1 - 6 miles (Sunday night football)
Total: 6 miles
Goal: 130 miles
Remaining: 124 mile
Race Schedule:
6/4 - Ironman 70.3 Raleigh - 4:43:57 (w. 1:36:35 HM) - Qualified for 70.3 World Championship
8/26 - Ironman Coeur D'Alene - 10:16:55 (3:33:17 Marathon) - 21/1106 OA, 6/137 AG
9/10 - Ironman 70.3 World Championship - 4:57:25 (1:37:23 HM) - 150/470 AG, 877/2815 OA
12/10 - Holiday Halfathon (13.1)
1/6/18 - HITS Naples Half (70.3)
1/28/18 - Miami Marathon
4/16/18 - Boston Marathon
9/9/18 - Ironman Wisconsin5 -
10/1: 3.3
10/2: 4.2
Total: 7.5 / ???
Hoping this month will not fall apart like last month did.1 -
@skippygirlsmom ughhh, what the kittens? You don't need to be a super experienced runner to realize the coach is insane! Seriously, is he trying to get everyone injured? Good thing Skip got a smart and caring mother, I just hope other kids don't push themselves this far. Either way, lets us know what happens.
Wishing everyone a great week!
Prayers and warm thoughts for everyone in Vegas
Goal: 135
Total: 15.8
9/01 – 10.4 miles
9/02 – 5.4 miles
Upcoming races:
