I'm not sure if healing the liver slows weight loss, but i know that when you make adjustments to your lifestyle, sometimes it takes the body a while to catch up and see what you are doing. Depending on how much you have abused your liver, it can take 30 days to six months to completely heal your liver....but the best way to know what shape your liver is in is to go to the Dr. and get a simple blood test.
I do take Milk Thistle for my liver, and I have never had problems with hives, but if you are allergic to ragweed, Milk Thistle is a no no. But from what I have read, the liver is a resilient organ that can heal itself with good nutrition, exercise, H20 and time.
Whether alcohol is involved or not, plateaus happen! I was plateauing from mid-May to August. I do credit breaking my plateau from deciding not to drink alcohol towards the end of July as I was no longer drinking too much wine and eating crap on the weekends. For me, it was the only thing I could really change as I had already given up diet soda, was working out regularly, tracking my food and watching what I was eating 90% of the time. It was just the wine that would get me off track.
I guess my point is - giving up alcohol or reducing alcohol is a wonderful thing for many reasons for your body. But calories in and calories out and working out is what is going to help you lose weight. And weight loss takes consistency and time. So regardless of what decisions you are making about your alcohol intake, be patient with yourself and your body. Things take time!
And if things aren't progressing like they should be, you might want to consider seeing your Dr. and having your thyroid checked or just a plain old physical.
Don't be afraid to go get your blood work done. It's better to know where your liver health is at than to sit and worry.
P.S. I'm not a Dr., although I sometimes think I have a WebMd Google is your friend & your enemy. So if you have true/legit health concerns, go to your Dr. for health advice!6 -
I''m not on day one yet, but next week I plan on jumping on the bandwagon. I've had a problem with alcohol for as long as I can remember (brings out the bad decisions, blackouts, no off switch etc) and I would like to quit smoking. I've decided to make these changes starting on Tuesday. my son is going to grandmas for a few weeks and I think this is the perfect opportunity to do so without worrying that the withdrawal of quitting smoking and alcohol will cause me to be overly stressed. I'm excited and I want to go through to Christmas with almost no alcohol and permanently no smoking.
I say almost because I want to be able to drink a glass of wine if I choose to do so but it's strictly limited to 2 glasses of wine (so my therapist says). Good luck to everyone!!! :-) Thanks for posting something like this, the community is awesome for motivation.5 -

I shd say I have been diagnosed with a fatty liver a while ago which was picked up from blood work and hence why I'm finally following drs advice. This challenge is mainly why I'm excited to finally make some overdue changes!6

I think I need to be stronger in my convictions and stop using the word "trying". I'm trying to eat less, trying to go to the gym, trying to stop drinking during the week. I WILL eat less, I WILL go to the gym, I WILL be AF during the week. The word trying seems to give me an out.
please don't quote that star wars saying. do / try/ whatever.
How about saying you are making a choice to not drink during the week? Saying you are making the choice or saying I don’t do this gives you the power! You are powerful and strong!
I AM powerful and strong. Thank you!!

Blew it the last two days. No excuse - I let myself give in. Starting fresh again until Saturday night when we're hosting Thanksgiving dinner - I'll let myself have up to three glasses of wine but over several hours.4

this post just popped up at the most perfect time for me! I AM IN FOR OCTOBER! thank you!6

Ads are based on your internet history. MFP has zero to do with what ads you see on the site.4 -
Ok today will be 2 days this month of abstaining. I am happy that I am seeing progress!3

Was wondering the same thing? Coors light? Ugh no0 -
Really wanted a drink at one point last night. Even so far as to go through my mind about the next day. Had to "think through the drink".
You know your not drinking when you start having dreams again. Like weird ones.
I'm up, passed on my 5am alarm and pushed it to 6:00. I'll get my workout in this afternoon. My favorite Happy Hour spot lately is The Iron Bar. No 12 oz curls allowed. Squats, deadlifts and presses only.
Happy Friday everyone. Make is a dry one.

I think if you hit the star on the right at the top of the thread, it goes into your bookmarked threads.
I have been having a lot of dreams too.3 -
Thanks for this thread. I know I've been needing to make a change for sometime and this thread has brought it home. I've lost over 50 lbs, kept it off for a couple of years, but this is the last outlier. I drink too often, too much, and my drink of choice is craft beer. My goal is to start Sunday, go 30 days (I'm thinking Veteran's Day) and reassess my drinking future from there. Thanks again for putting this in front of me. Sure am looking forward to sleeping good again!4

Just checking in with all you lovely people. Started this challenge on 8/29 and have had a grand total of 3 drinks. Cravings subsided after the first couple of weeks, but still feel very tempted in certain situations. I have to have a little internal dialogue to talk myself out it and remind myself why I'm doing this - better sleep, increased energy, weight control, etc.
Also, I have to admit I don't want to end up like my friends/family who made a hobby out of drinking. They all look pretty rough and far older than they are. Some died prematurely or in a very sad, dependent way. Sorry to be a downer! It just helps me to remember there's a big price to pay for drinking heavily.5 -
My 12th day. Just reading comments. So it looks like dreaming happens no drinks involved. I'm not the only one to experience this which is good to know. Hubby is home so my test is this weekend. Friday and Saturday drinks in evening only. Have a wonderful weekend everyone and stay strong6

Day 10 for me. I've noticed that I'm extremely irritable since becoming AF. I'm usually very easy going and rarely let things get to me. I really hope that this subsides soon; as a precaution I've banished myself to upstairs to avoid aggravation.5
-
I'm in. The only day I have circled when I plan to have a beer (and a bratwurst) is after finishing an Oktoberfest themed 5k I am running next weekend; otherwise, I will be alcohol-free.5

I did it!!
After a wasted day of work with our emails and internet down, plus appraisals, I went out for a late dinner in a pub with friends. Like @SlytherinBat I've found myself a bit irritable today, and my friends were late meeting me, plus I was starving having done a 7 mile run after work.
But I ordered a soda water with a dash of bitters. It looked a bit like cider, so at first I thought that would throw my friends of the scent, but then they asked what it was. To my surprise not a single one raised an eyebrow at my AF drink (I'm a full-on beer girl usually).
Made me realise that perhaps peer pressure to drink on a night out is more in my own head than I think.

Everyone resist! Friday night is my kryptonite!!!8

I made it without drinking.. but binged on food. Ugh. Where's the balance?4

Today marks 76 days without alcohol for me! I figured out that if I make it to the end of October, I will be at 100 days.10

I'm a recovering alcoholic and today makes a year I've been sober, so I'm definitely in!13

Day 39 for me. I spent last night with friends, who got polluted. We played darts and I was the only one who could add the scores. It was quite funny in a sad way. Water is my friend. It was so nice to wake up this morning with a clear head and know I made the best choice. I didn't miss a thing. Stay strong people, you're really not missing anything either.
Congratulations Purplelavender and bootyrubsan.. It feels great, doesn't it?9 -

Does anyone use a "something in the hand" substitute at the end of the day? My go to is a bottle or 2 of IBC Diet Root Beer, but was curious if anyone else has the mental hangup of wanting something in your hand. When I quit smoking 30 years ago it was lemon drops, the more sour the better!6

Sometimes I have sparkling water in a wine glass.

@cmeride I once went to a New Years Eve party where I was the only one sober. It was like being in a parallel universe where no one could really see me. I actually vowed never to do a completely sober New Year again because it wasn’t very pleasant. Not deliberately unpleasant on their part but just odd. And drunk people repeat themselves, a lot. Now I often go to Swing Dance related parties where we don’t drink much as it doesn’t make the dancing better.6
