Survived a weekend without beer. Makes helping with the newborn so much easier. Clearer mind in the middle of the night and pop up ready to go in the morning.10

One weekend in October almost behind us, three more to go!4

Just checking in with all you lovely people. Started this challenge on 8/29 and have had a grand total of 3 drinks. Cravings subsided after the first couple of weeks, but still feel very tempted in certain situations. I have to have a little internal dialogue to talk myself out it and remind myself why I'm doing this - better sleep, increased energy, weight control, etc.
Also, I have to admit I don't want to end up like my friends/family who made a hobby out of drinking. They all look pretty rough and far older than they are. Some died prematurely or in a very sad, dependent way. Sorry to be a downer! It just helps me to remember there's a big price to pay for drinking heavily.
That's a good incentive.. sometime vanity is ok. I too notice a few friends and relatives that haven't aged well or sadly died early due to alcohol.
Unfortunately I drank last night (my goal is to be AF during the week..which I did) but I also ate too much and I feel like crap today. I was at a party and wasn't driving so I gave into the cold beers.
I've got a wedding next weekend but will be AF til next Friday.4 -
Does anyone use a "something in the hand" substitute at the end of the day? My go to is a bottle or 2 of IBC Diet Root Beer, but was curious if anyone else has the mental hangup of wanting something in your hand. When I quit smoking 30 years ago it was lemon drops, the more sour the better!
I did this A LOT in the beginning. I was never a social/party drinker. I was more of a isolated drinker. My favorite place to get wasted was sitting on my bed listening to music. The hardest part for me was not having a "drink" to look forward to at night, so I started making these elaborate fruit infused water beverages in mason jars lmao. I was also a fan of drinking cranberry juice mixed with ginger ale with lots of ice in my favorite alcohol glass. Doing this helped me get through the "mourning" phase of giving up alcohol.

Me too. I finally got a handle on it and want to continue having maybe just a few on the weekends if at all.3 -
I've made it 10 days! On September 27 my kids and I got to go see my favorite singer in concert. We even got to meet him, get our passes signed, and get selfies with him. I let myself drink that night, no regrets, and had a great time. Today is really the first time I'm struggling since then. Not sure why...maybe because I've been down with a rough cold and can't run (my mental outlet), or because it's crazy unseasonably humid today...but I just can't settle my mind, and the old habit is trying to creep back in. I may try going for a walk, but I thought I'd check in here first. Reading everyone else's posts seems to help.9

Having a cold or other illness is triggery for me too,I think rest and lots of fluids help though, been a pretty easy weekend for me been thinking about how a hangover feels is a great deterrent5 -
Day 13. Made it through the weekend without any major cravings. Last night I had a dream that one of my friends offered me a beer; I turned it down. Staying strong even in my dreams lol.10

I had my wine this weekend while watching scary movies with the family. But I definitely cut back on my intake and stuck to healthy foods all weekend.

Made it through the weekend! And yes, reading these posts made it easier for me, so thanks to everybody that checked in!5

well i was doing well until last night..... feeling discouraged, in need for some motivational support to get back on track again.....3

I have so much energy after a week of no alcohol, I can't believe it. Used to be a chore to hit the gym after work but I feel like I'm firing on all cylinders again. I'm sure my improved diet has been helping too but I feel like a new man. Usually I feel drained on Monday mornings but not today, I hope I get addicted to this feeling instead of alcohol.13

Alcoholism runs on my paternal side and when I got my lab results from my liver test, and one of the test was elevated, that was all it took for me to say "no more". I have gone from drinking at least 2 glasses of white wine a night to not a drop of alcohol in over a month.15

So logic would dictate that if I have given up my nightly wine that I would lose a few pounds since I am consuming fewer calories, but I have not lost an ounce!4

I'd love to join this too. I have recently been scaling back on drinks and working out more, but would love motivation from people doing the same..please feel free to add me..i need the encouragement!!!!4
-
I made it nearly two weeks, but I caved tonight and had a gin martini.3

My goal is to be AF during the week. My friend and I attended the Cub game this afternoon..and I had 2 beers. Back at it tomorrow. Oh..cubs win!!6

Got home from an intense NYC weekend very late last night. Dinner on the delayed Amtrak consisted of hummus, pretzels, Sam Adams, and M&Ms. I'm going to need a few days to detox, and it's not a pleasant feeling.
However -- doesn't your own coffee, after a night in your own bed, taste amazing?

10th of October! We are nearly 1/3 of the way through the month. Congrats to everyone on the progress you are making!3

Hi all - new here so be gentle! I started my Sober 'October' on 27 September as I am going on holiday 28 October but still wanted to do the full 31 days - so far so good (13 days in)
However, I haven't felt any benefits at all. I MORE bloated, feel boring when everyone else is out (been out a couple of times sober but drunk people are annoying), I'm eating more 'treats' as I 'deserve' them for not drinking (I know that's ridiculous), I've only lost 4lb (not great compared to previous weight loss whilst drinking), my body fat % has gone up!
I feel like I can't eat or drink anything I like now (whereas usually it's just I can't eat anything I like1 -

I know that it took me a few weeks before I started losing after cutting out the wine, but every body is different. Are you drinking enough water? Are you cutting back on your calories and tracking your food intake? Are you working out?
Change takes time, and your body is healing and processing the changes you are making. You are reducing and / or abstaining for a reason, so focus on the WHY you want to be healthy and WHY you are making positive changes. Stick with it and good things will happen. Be patient with your body!

Unfortunately, my sangria consumption this weekend added a few pounds to my small weighloss. What an incredible bummer...but, like you all say....today is a new day to make things better and right for the rest of this week! Cheers to my bottle of water!

Yeah cutting back my calories - maybe too much some days and I work out 3 times a week usually. I probably don't drink enough water - I try but just end up visiting the loo so much! My colleagues think I have a problem haha2 -

Keep up the good work. It will come together eventually!

I was going to ask how long of no drinking alcohol did it take to start losing some weight? I'm not adding other calories on but I'm terribly impatient. I know there are so many benefits outside of losing weight for giving up drinking too much alcohol! But I wouldn't mind a little instant gratification. : )2

I think it's different for everyone. I stopped drinking wine on July 23 (last drink) and
I started seeing the scale move on August 3. I had been plateauing since mid-May before that. Reducing/abstaining alcohol was/is only one part of the equation though. I'm also tracking food/calories in MFP, drinking plenty of water and working out.

I also find that my tracking is more consistent when I don't drink. Even with just a couple of beers, I have a tendency to mindlessly nibble3

Yesterday I went out for the first time and didn't have an alcoholic drink. I'm so impressed with myself haha! Last drink was Saturday.5
