October 2017 Running Challenge

This evening's run was the first post-marathon recovery run, so it was a very very easy two miler. Nothing special to report, and the majority of the soreness from the race has subsided. However, I'm keenly aware that even though I feel a lot better, my body still needs a lot of time to heal properly. Therefore, running will be kept to a minimum, and rest days will be at a maximum for at least a couple of weeks.

@PastorVincent wow, first place across the board on Strava! Nicely done! Also I'm with @MNLittleFinn on this one, avoid long runs on the treadmill as much as possible. I typically run through the Chicago winters outside; my rule of thumb is that as long as it is above -10*F real feel I will run outside. I do avoid running when it is icy though, preferring instead to go during/immediately after a snowfall or waiting until they have plowed the streets once the ice sets in. Also it gets pretty windy here so I try not to go out if its over 25 mph winds, I just don't have the right gear for super windy and super cold
Yeah, that is my problem. My cold weather gear is somewhat limited. Still working out what temps I can deal without dropping even more cash on this "inexpensive" hobby.

Goal this month is 110 miles
10/1 - 9.03 miles
10/3 - 4.25 miles
10/4 - 4.22 miles
10/6 - 5.06 miles
10/7 - 5.06 miles
10/9 - 10.51 miles
10/10 - 5.13 miles - temp was about 85 outside so the temps are heading downward at least from the 100's finally - makes for a more enjoyable run
10/11 - 5.17 - slower pace than yesterday but was a lot hotter today but it was nice to get out and enjoy slower run
48.43/1105 -
3.2 miles tonight with Kody. The run felt fantastic for until the last half mile with no pain at all in my calf. The last half mile it started to tighten up, and the last several hundred yards I could sense that it was getting worse. Nothing terrible, but had I continued I know it would start to hurt.
All in all, I was very happy for the result. I'll take the next two days off and run the HM on Saturday, though I'll try to take it kind of easy. I checked the course and there are three points where I could easily bail out if needed. Unfortunately this means I'll likely not be able to run the virtual AIM 5K at the same time as it's actually going on, but I *will* run it as soon as my calf lets me.
October Progress:
33.5/110 Miles

Does anyone else love it when @Elise4270 is unsupervised at work?
@navygrrl - Glad you were able to see the ortho! I am assuming there is no surgery in your future and that it should just heal as is? My husband broke his at some point too that he is completely unaware of. It bothers him every once in a while but hasn't really been a problem. Also love that you would be a pirate! I ran a Disney HM here at Disneyland and I don't think they really sweep anyone off the course unless you are out on the streets and they need to reopen them so I don't think you will really need to worry, especially if you can run some of it.
@lporter229 - have fun with the relay and the camping! There will be a shower in your future so just think about how great it is going to feel!
@_nikkiwolf_ - I love that you can run to work and back! And that you get to see a giraffe along your way!
@RunsOnEspresso - watching the DBacks play... the ummm Dodgers?
@bride001 - I am so sorry about your uncle and your father!
I tried to run yesterday evening and my legs (quads and hip flexors) were so tight I ended up with a full walk/run. Hobbes the Vizsla kept getting in front of me and looking back to see where I was like he was checking to see if I was ok. Tonight I ran without him, wanting to get in some intervals. My legs were better but still so tight. I couldn't run fast enough to even really elevate my HR so the intervals were just no bueno... I ended up just trying to run slowly but found that running a bit faster felt like I had better form and almost felt ok. I did still walk a lot but improvement is improvement. I just wish I could figure out the issue or cause. I will be on a business trip all of next week and I am contemplating not running... but I will be really upset with myself if my legs feel better and I have no running clothes with me. I am sure they will fit in somehow!

@Ryokat @ariceroni @shanaber It wasn't a real living giraffe, unfortunately - just a fake giraffe head on a long stick inside the hedge. But it looked so realistic that it fooled me until I was really close and could investigate it.
Pretty cool - if I ever get a house with a high hedge around, I'm going to put up a fake giraffe too16 -

Oct 10 - 1 mi walk, 3 mi run (with a few little breaks), .5 mi walk
Oct 11 and 12 - Don't run on Wed/Thur.....not until I'm able to make morning running work again
So, we had a huge cool front that dropped us from mid-80s to 50. "Feels like" temp for my run was 45. It was AWESOME. Actually I was a little hot as usual. I wasn't quite sure how to dress since I'm doing the long warm up and cool down and walking is much different than running temp-wise. So I went with a jacket but 3 seconds into running I was hot. But it varied depending on if I was running into the wind so I just unzipped/zipped several times. Overall it wasn't bad and breathing the cooler air was definitely nice.
@Orphia Your back better start behaving! Forgive me if I've forgotten but have you ever had a back problem like this before? That's cool that your bosses thought you should race even if you get set back and miss work. LOL
@greenolivetree
Yes, dressing appropriately is so difficult sometimes!
It's probably going to be weather like that for my HM on Sunday. Too cool to go to the venue in my team T-shirt, but too hot to wear long sleeves, so I'm going to have to use the warm clothing drop. Hate having things to do before events.
My back problem started when I was pregnant 24 years ago.
It used to go out on me every few months when I was heavier (2011-2014) and it would get better in a week or two.
Since losing weight, and starting to run in September 2015, this is only the second time it's gone out.
Both those times it's felt fine when running long before it felt fine sitting. Yep, we were made to move!3 -
@JessicaMcB Can you or someone refresh my memory?
You're doing the Whistler 50 mile / 80 km Ultra on Saturday?
This one?

@_nikkiwolf_ - it wasn't real? Wow, fooled me! So cool that you did the complicated cycling/running mix to and from work! Glad you had backup shorts!
@shanaber - pack your running clothes! Hope you feel better soon!
@JessicaMcB - 3am! WOW! You are right that you are definitely showing your kids what it means to be dedicated. You must go to bed the second they do! Good luck!!!
Today is a gym day after work. So I go out front to leave for work and the weather would have been perfect for running - doesn't seem humid and only 74. Darn! I ran in the sweltering humidity and now the day I don't it's like this! Planning on Tabatas (pullups/situps/pushups/squats) at the gym this afternoon which means tomorrow needs to be a rest day. My poor mileage is suffering but I am wanting to mix things up!

LOL @shanaber ! I'd just fall over if I found my toe in my sock "like a slim Jim" ! Astounding.
Anyone in the OKC area wanna come run/meet up at the POOP run Dec 2nd? Think on it... I registered for the 5.5 mile trail run. There is also a 2.5 and a half. @BEERRUNNER will be there.
Don't make me go to work today... I dun wanna... And my tummy is still so angry. So so angry.2 -

Elevation goal: 15000ft
Today's notes: Another 5 this morning, managed sub-9 average pace, and kept my average HR in z2.... % of time in zones was a bit off, but that's OK. I can't believe that I on have 4 more runs before Wild Duluth. Things are definitely getting real here, the normal taper doubts and worries are amplified by the type of race it is...... Good thing I have a good crew and a pacer I'll be meeting this weekend, they'll be a huge help on race day.

Wow what a difference a day makes in the weather, cool 56F this morning.
@ariceroni I have some weird thing about looking at backgrounds of pictures or noticing the weirdest things in pictures ha ha
Thanks for the compliment @JessicaMcB I completely I agree with you about what we show our girls. I knew you were an early morning runner, or is that a late night runner? Ha ha
@runsonespresso we have robo cans that a truck picks up so the cans are on the street, stinky when it’s hot.
@navygrrl awesome news on the boot and HM in April. Strange on the previous break.
@lporter229 I’ll have to read the blog later, but you will do great (and so will hubby), sometimes too much information is a bad thing. You’re up to the challenge!! Can’t wait to hear all about it.
@_nikkiwolf_ awesome system you have worked out Gotta say I’ve never seen one of those my runs! But we have a house that I think has a daycare up the road a bit and it has a giraffe I can see it from the main road. I need to drive down there one day and check it out.
@bride001 I’m sorry to hear about your uncle
@shanaber and @runsonespresso – Go Yankees @shanaber I was talking to Skip’s private coach last night (not her school coach) and she recommended for muscles potassium and magnesium maybe that would help you out some?
Have a great race @Orphia and @cburke8909
@elise4270 sorry about the tummy
Weirdest thing happened to Skip after practice the other day she was driving home and got a bad Charlie horse in her right calf, she called me crying it hurt so bad. Two days later and it’s still hurting, she has a meet today (figures) she said it doesn’t hurt when she runs just when she walks. I said well that’s good I guess. She’s been icing, drinking tons of water, stretching and taking potassium and magnesium. She went to school early today to see the trainer and ask for a rub down. They are running at the University of Alabama today, I asked her if she wanted to pass since sectionals are coming up but she’s been looking forward to this meet all season.

Missed checking in yesterday. Wednesday was a walk day (but marked two walk days in a row because of my extra run on Monday), but played sharks and minnows with my youth XC team on their last day of practice before the big meet. I am really bad at that kind of running (lots of bobbing and weaving and side to side sprinting). My plantar fasciitis was bothering me a bit more this morning because of it. The kids worked super hard doing some 1K repeats and racing against each other. I think they'll be ready for Saturday! More ASTYM on my hip and piriformis and sadistic glute exercises at PT today, but I definitely need it! Ran 3.5 and walked 1 mi in the Nature Park in the middle of the day.
Day/Distance/Comments
10/1 5 mi (+ 1 mile walk) + serious stretch program (Gymnastic Bodies Front Split)
10/2 Water walking
10/3 3 mi + light yoga
10/4 Walking + yoga
10/5 3 mi + PT (scraping + treadmill + stretch + strength)
10/6 Walking + PT (stretching + scraping + ultrasound + H-wave)
10/7 4 mi (+ 1 mile walk) + yoga and PT moves
10/8 6 mi (+ 1 mile walk) + Gymnastic Bodies Front Split stretch routine + PT
10/9 3 mi slowish with youth XC team + 40 min water walking + PT
10/10 Walk for 45 min + PT moves
10/11 Walk for 45 min + a little PT
10/12 3.5 mi (+1 mi walk) + PT
Goal: 75 mi
Total: 27.5 mi
To go: 47.5 mi6 -
@shanaber NEVER! LOL I am a proud Phoenician and will participate in any Beat LA chant. I am happy with the Dbacks this season. After last year, I wasn't holding out much hope. Next up the kings. Although I think the Coyotes are gonna suck this year. The Cards suck. The Suns will probably suck. *sigh* It's a tough year to be an AZ sports fan.
Today is a rest day. Last night was Booty day. I need to find some more weights as I've maxed out my current dumbbells (unless I can get creative).3 -
@RunsOnEspresso What exercises does "Booty day" entail? Based on my injuries I think I could use that too!1

Total 18 miles reported so far. Here's my recent runs
10/10- 3 miles
10/11- 3 miles
For a total of 24 miles!5 -
No running yesterday, but lots of walking and bowling. Had another above average night, rolling a 562 series. Last week was 566. Hoping to crack 600 very soon. I'm very happy with my new ball, the Roto Grip Show-Off.
Tonight will probably be another jaunt on my treadmill as it is getting dark a lot earlier. If my knees still get achy during this run, I'm going to look into getting a pad for underneath it.5 -
@RunsOnEspresso What exercises does "Booty day" entail? Based on my injuries I think I could use that too!
Squats (like 3 different kinds), Lunges, reverse hypers, glute kickbacks. I think that's it. I am doing the Jessie's Girls Bikini Body 1 program. I modify it to have separate cardio days so I can run and fit everything in.2 -
@hjeppley I had really bad plantar fasciitis. I have a job where I am on my feet all day, and the pharmacist there told me about Alegria shoes. They really helped me out without having to spend tons of money on orthotics. I don't know if that's an option for you, and it doesn't help with running, but I thought I'd throw it out there.1
-
@orphia I've always found that exercise helps my back problems, especially my upper back (between my shoulder blades. My lower back generally gets aggravated by things like gardening or working on the floor in the house.
@RespectTheKitty Keep forgetting to congratulate you on the treadmill find :-D Nice bowling! That's double my usual score. LOL
@skippygirlsmom Poor skip! I hope the magnesium and potassium helps. My husband has terrible charlie horse cramps when he's low on those.
@elise4270 Hope you are feeling better by now.....
@_nikkiwolf_ Hilarious giraffe!
I have a sore throat today. I hope I'm not really getting sick

@shanaber and @skippygirlsmom - Thank you for the condolences!
This morning run was a very major suck fest! I had a great run on Wednesday but for some reason this morning I wasn't feeling it. I overslept and started later and only did 3 of my 5 miles planned. I think my shoe was tied to tight on the left foot and it caused the foot to go numb. Fixed it around mile 2 but did not get feeling back in it until after mile 3. I am planning to do the two miles tonight when I get home from work.
10/06 - 4.0 miles
10/08 - 4.0 miles
10/09 - Rest Day
10/10 - Rest Day (not planned)
10/11 - 4.0 miles
10/12 - 3.0 miles at time of this posting
15/119 miles
Upcoming Races:
12/02/2017 St Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend (HM)
01/13/2018 - Louisiana Marathon (Quarter Marathon)
02/17/2018 - Mardi Gras Mambo (10K)2 -
@_nikkiwolf_ - I love the giraffe whether real or not. I would look forward to seeing him/her along the way regardless. I don't have a hedge like that but I am with you and would put one up if I had one! Hmmm maybe I could put one up looking over our back wall...
@Orphia - do you have 'sleeves'? When the weather is going to be cool and warm up I usually wear sleeves at the start and I can pull them down as I warm up and even take them off and tie them on my belt or shove into a pocket. Much easier than dealing with a jacket. You can get them now in all kinds of weights and fabrics. The ones I like best I got at an Asics outlet (they have grippy stuff to help them stay up and come down over my hands to keep them warm too), but I also like my Smartwool ones too.
@RunsOnEspresso - Well there is always college football... ASU isn't doing too bad. Kind of right there in the middle of the Pac-12 with UCLA and the others...
@skippygirlsmom - my daughter said the same thing about the magnesium. I have been taking it for a while now for the cramps I was having and it has helped with those. I just wish I could figure what I did or am doing to cause it in the 1st place. I even had trouble this morning when I got up. It feels like I ran a really fast HM with hills and my legs are really angry... It would be understandable if I had but...
I hope Skip's calf feels better for the meet! Did she ice it too?
No running for me today. I had planned to but I am going to call it an active rest day instead. I will be taking the pup out for a long walk hopefully and then off to the gym (reopened today!) for some strength training.4
