Not sure this fits but I am so over the smug good bodies on here (both boys and girls) who talk as if they only eat ice cream and pizza and as along as they do their "deads" they lose fat and add muscle. A great body is hard work and you do not get it by eating tons of junk food. Also the humble braggers on here make me want to vomit.

I vote for hypothyroid. The ultimate fad disease. Just about everyone here claims they have it, and blame their weight problem on it.
When a thyroid panel is done and all the levels are abnormal, either high or low, and you need to be put on meds to normalize it, then it is a disease, not a fad. People don't claim to have it, clinical test prove it. What about Hashimoto? Is it a autoimmune disease also a fad? Do you also consider diabetes T2 a fad disease ?
Agree 100%. Thyroid issues are nothing to play around with. However, you do see people creating posts stating "can't lose weight bc of throid", "gained 60 pounds bc of thyroid". It can make it harder but not impossible. I feel many use this as an excuse to not put in the work to lose weight. ( and yes, I'm a medicated thyroid patient)19 -

I will put my votes in for starvation mode; as well as blaming any particular ingredient, component, macro, or food (sugar/gluten/carb/bread) for the inability to lose weight, and/or assorted health related issues.
Too many people focus on the extremes where a sensible middle ground in terms of calories, nutrition, food choices and exercise would enable them to lead an overall happy and healthy life.20 -

i'll say this - I had all the thyroid panels done multiple times and they were always "normal" - until the doctor discovered a tumor (which by the way you could see physically feel on my thyroid) - when I had my thyroidectomy - the surgeon asked me if I knew that I had Hashimoto's - I had all the symptoms over the years but was never actually diagnosed because of blood work being normal14 -
Hopefully, whatever the likes of "Drs" Oz and Mercola dream up, the fad for putting that vile plant kale in everything will go away. Almost any green is preferable to that devil's weed.17

Thank you! I am hypothyroid and Hashimoto's as confirmed by MEDICAL TESTS. What a ridiculous statement to say hypothyroidism is a fad. The sheer ignorance of saying this is a fad is astonishing!23 -
If you eat X way you lose weight no matter how many calories you eat.
And the opposite, If you eat X you won't lose weight.
And the copout when someone chimes in and says they did eat X and lost a substantial amount of weight, YEAH BUT ARE YOU HEALTHY????10 -

What I think is an actually true statement is that metabolic diseases track increased weight, certainly in the US and other western counties.6 -
Hashimoto's thyroiditis always presents with so called "normal" thyroid panel numbers until the thyroid gland is damaged to the point of failure because the body is mistaking an alien invaders for thyroid cells causing an autoimmune reaction, the body killing itself. Hashimoto's and Graves are only diagnosed when the thyroid antibodies are tested. Doctors are told there is nothing which can be done to prevent the destruction of the thyroid gland but when the triggers are isolated and the body medicated appropriately it is able to behave normally. The triggers in general are particles of food which enter the blood stream from the gut, it goes on to be mistaken as stated above.
There is a world of difference between dietary hypothyroid when the body is deigned adequate nutrition, low iodine, selenium, possible copper and other minerals as well as vitamins to allow the thyroid to function properly, yet the two are treated the same by general medicine. Autoimmune conditions such as Graves, over activity; and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which can be hyper or hypo, it is only in the later stages when the thyroid gland is well on its way to destruction by over stimulation and erosion that it is constantly hypo.............
The generally accepted norm for thyroid conditions is to think there is only one symptom, weight gain where as there are 300 interrelated issue. The thyroid gland is the only gland which is supposed to keep working when all other glands in the endocrine system around it are having problems. It is the other way about. The thyroid is the piggy in the middle, between the pituitary, adrenals and other glands, it is where their failings show up. Best practice is stated as establishing the status of these additional glands before treating the thyroid gland with synthetic iodine, t4.
100 years ago all mental illness was first treated with natural animal thyroid which contained t3 active and t4 to be converted into t3 thyroid hormones with the addition of selenium and other minerals. Doctors and patients were happy with the results. It was only with the abuse of testing and the intervention of big pharma that NDT was ostracised, on the grounds it was inconsistent. All medications are made to conform with pharmacological standards and it is true that two of the dominant (ndt) Natural Dedicated Thyroid products do have different levels of thyroid hormones, but each product has the active levels clearly marked on the packet. Most persons are told to keep to their brand of heart, kidney, diabetic medication to be sure they keep the same continuity of care, there is nothing different here!
I believe in 10 may be 20 years time thyroid conditions will be seen as the devastating costly threats to health they actually are, as Functional Medicine is saying today. Thyroid problems impact on are impacted on by all hormone production. LOW t3, contributes to respiratory- lung, circulatory- heart, gastrointestinal problems from IBS to diabetes, depending on the patient it can impact on the Gaul bladder, causing Gaul stones. (Many Gaul Bladder removal surgery is needless were the liver, pancreatic and bile production treated correctly, most of us have diets low in bitter tasting foods which make the bile we all need). There are also links into the realms of Chemical Sensitivity and environmental problems. Those of you who are unfortunately blighted by reproductive issues could do better to address endocrine, thyroid, issues which are key to all kinds of reproduction from the common cell to our species including PCOS. Worst of all by far are the numbers of cancers which can be avoided when t3 is good for a life time, particularly endometrial cancers in a younger woman, still menstruating. Endometrial cancer if it were to happen, it should be when the person is of advanced age approaching 80 or more!!
Any use of antibiotics/otc pain relief will damage the gut flora which impacts on the state of the gut lining enabling the under digested foods to enter the blood stream and damage cells from the thyroid to cochleae they can cause tinnitus.
As a hypothyroid person I have read around this subject from free to view hospital medical papers, from most of the Big American Hospitals, to thyroid support sites, Stop the Thyroid Madness, Thyroid UK, other international thyroid support sites and many, many more.
I will even go as far as to say there is a male conspiracy to keep the symptomatic undiagnosed women in ill health struggling because of the general medical professions refusal to reconsider their own dictates'. Functional Medics use the same tests as are generally available, they look to the balance between the endocrine glands and in the case of autoimmune conditions and treat ethically according to the Hippocratic Oath.
Anyone is more than welcome to click, woo. but remember in 10 to 20 years time you will be eating your words.

Definitely the "insulin fairy" as the overarching one of the decade. I see the "sugar is the debil", Keto and Paleo as all subsets of that. Sadly, most of those that bark up the insulin tree don't even really understand what insulin does physiologically and think it stores fat magically. In the end, if you don't have excess energy to store (energy balance), you are going to make fat.
Once someone is Insulin Resistant you have a whole other ball game but insulin wasn't the problem to begin with in most cases. It was the unrestrained overeating and obesity that was caused by that. With a small % of folks with a genetic component, IR doesn't happen to people at a normal body weight/ BMI.
It does, just not as often as among heavy people.
It happened to me. I gained weight after I became prediabetic. One of my dad's 3 siblings had IR. There is no one else in my family with it. TBH, celiac disease and hypothyroidism is way more common in my family.2 -

The amount of woos on this post in a matter of minutes proves my point I think. I'm going to be the winner on this one - all of the best fads are the ones everyone buys into.
Sure the gullible will go for things like ACV or cleanses but everyone else knows they're woo. And even as popular as keto and cutting out sugar are right now the majority definitely think it's BS. So much so dieticians have no qualms recommending snack size cans of soda, users create sock puppets to proselytize against keto and most feel comfortable advising others to ignore low carb and low sugar recommendations.
But vegetables? Everyone knows that more is better! Filling up your toilet bowl multiple times a day is a virtue and any discomfort/beano is just the price you pay for being healthy.30 -
