WOW - I didn't realize my question would get so much feedback. So I guess - just drink when I'm thirsty. Some diet...some water...some tea (unsweet of course)...cup of coffee here and there. Some low cal vodka every now and then..10

Meh. I don't drink sugar-sweetened beverages often, but a sweet tea here and there won't hurt.0 -

I mean if your focus is weight loss then your focus should be on hitting a calorie intake that is lower than your calorie expenditure in a way that you can sustain long term.
What do you do to make sure you can sustain long term?
1) Make sure you are getting a reasonable amount of nutrition from your food (really shouldn't be hard to do)
2) Make sure you are satisfied by what you are eating.
Honestly if dropping a particular food means that on a day to day basis you take in 50 calories less but on the whole you are much less satisfied with your meals or how you feel during your day then it really isn't worth it. Enjoyment or at least satisfaction is part of it and if you enjoy having a diet soda now and again or (gasp) a sweet tea...thats okay. Don't punish yourself for being overweight to the point that you end up quitting a couple months in. As long as you are consistent and under your calories the only thing you need to really track is how satisfied you are.
Fretting over beverage types is not really going to help you out long term.
That said I call b.s. on "low calorie vodka" hah2 -

Just drink diet soda's. It's funny we worry about that, but statistically we are more likely to die from a car crash, yet do you see people stop driving?
Convenience. I'd say there would be a direct correlation between the level of risk we accept and the inconvenience of avoiding it. Probably with a variable factor for the element of moral superiority perceived to be gained by said avoidance.2 -
OK...well since I've decided to keep drinking a few diet sodas (weekly). Has anyone tried a diet A&W rootbeer....man they are really good.
Maybe when I have a few extra cals I throw in some of that low cal vodka....4 -
I don't drink diet or regular sodas - regular sodas because of the sugar content and diet sodas trigger my migraines unfortunately (well, artificial sweeteners do). Shame because i love diet coke! They are zero calories so won't lead to weight gain... everything in moderation i guess1

I mean I’m sure it’s not great for you. I drink a diet Dr Pepper every day. I just like to and it has no calories.0

I drink sparkling water mainly... if i get bored of that i'll just add fresh lemon or lime I've got used to it now. (or on a Friday night, gin! haha!)

I like it plain. I still don't like the taste of diet drinks. I'll have one if I want something sweet, or I'll have a life saver. But I go through a lot of water with my Soda Stream.0 -

I've definitely done my research on them and have been consuming it over a 25+ year span so far. How many more years till I actually see some "really bad" results?

What I find truly incredible is that with all the actually legitimate topics of discussion within health and fitness that Diet Coke acts as the keg at a frat party to draw out the wing nuts. Is demonizing carbs and sugar getting too passé and boring?10

There's no nutritional value associated with water either. Try going without it for a while.12 -

Yeah, this.
I understand "not great for you" to mean "bad for you," at least as it's normally used in the US, and I don't think diet soda is bad for you.
Does it have amazing health benefits? Well, not particularly, but who said it did? That's hardly my standard about what is required for anything I will consume. I don't think coffee has amazing health benefits, or homemade iced tea (I don't sweeten it, because I think sweet tea is icky) -- at least not unless one otherwise would be dehydrated -- but I consume them because I enjoy them. Same with the occasional diet coke.1 -
If I was you I would just experiment. I personally gave them up no reason just to see what happens to my body and I literally just started loosing my love handles. No other change to my diet. This was the first time in my life they shrank. I don't know why this happened and i don't know if it will do the same for anyone else. To be honest if i didn't notice a difference I would also be drinking some coke zero right now. But I like have no love handles more then I like coke zero.13

A zero calorie substance causes love handles now does it? Somebody get the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins on the phone STAT, as we are all bearing witness to a medical miracle.9 -

Hahaha thats not what i'm saying at all. What I'm saying is that for some reason at the time I gave it up I was lucky enough to have my love handles disappear. Would be awesome if they were scientifically related I'd sign up for that study. Its the reason I haven't had any aspartame since. Just like my fat loss is why I keep my calories in control. If I lost fat drinking tons of diet soda I would be doing that to. If I lost fat eating 5000 calories I would do that. What I'm getting at is experiment with your body see what works and if you like the results decide if you want to continue.

You are right im relating the two. My other post was saying sugars, i include them together Sugars/Sweetners) shouldn't but i do. Neither one are probably at all related sugar, aspartame and my personal fat loss but because it happened its kept me continuing what i'm doing. Just an interesting read below:

I also am not going to say it has “no impact” on a person, because I haven’t done research on this. Dark soda does stain my teeth. So there. Not great.3
