I eat tons... especially when I'm out and about... but I'm also bulking. And I'm a jumping bean who hates to sit still. While I gain weight, to people around me (unless they see me in a bikini during the winter) it is hard to notice a difference.4

I'm trying to remember this correctly... There was a thread, I think it was on reddit, where a roommate who used to feel this way about her roomie secretly wrote down everything that person ate and logged it in MFP because it was driving her nuts.
She did this for a couple of weeks, and lo and behold... that person was eating at maintenance.
Her perception didn't match reality when she actually had facts and figures over time staring her in the face.30 -

I have enough trouble logging my own food. I can't imagine going to the trouble of doing it for someone else!22 -
Perceptions can be wrong. I was gaining weight on "nothing.." from my and my families perception. I skipped eating till dinner then "grazed" so it didn't seem like I was eating a whole lot. Yet, here I was, huge as a mountain. So curious, I decided to log AFTER a few days on just memory alone. Over 3k calories just in dinner alone.. ouch. Made me realize that what looks like a little can be packed with calories. My ex and his sister are rail thin and eat nothing but junk food.. alll freaking day.. both are very active. Neither own a car..11

I've been obese and I've been the skinny friend. For me the difference was activity level and age. When I was in college and model thin, I ate ridiculous amounts of food like whole boxes of Oreos dipped in whipped cream. But then I would go to a club and dance for four hours straight without sitting down, or spend 6 hours hiking, or all day swimming. When I tore out my ACL a few years later and was forced into inactivity for several months, the weight came on quickly.
Medications also make a difference for me. I'm allergic to Christmas trees so I take an antihistamine for a couple of weeks each year. During those weeks I eat at a deficit and log exactly the same as before, but my weight doesn't move. When I go off them, I go right back to losing weight. I've seen a similar effect with other medications such as Glimeperide. I can see on my weight trend the bulge where I had to take Glimeperide for a couple of weeks.8 -

IKR?
It was really bothering her, though. Let's just say she was invested.6 -
I have friends who say that about me but they don't know how much further from the truth they could be. I notice it's mostly people I go on outings with. They have no idea that 80% of the time I eat extremely healthy and monitor every bite so that I can cut loose when I go out or that I exercise intensely and religiously 5 to 6 days a week, no exceptions. Some people do gave an unnaturally high metabolism but some of us just work really hard.13
-
I used to want to be one of those people but now I'm glad I'm not. My need to log my food has let to such a healthier lifestyle. So what if they're thin? How do they FEEL? Tired, sluggish? What do their arteries look like? How is their blood pressure, their cholesterol? I'm not saying to ask but there is so much more to eating well and exercising than just being thin.8

No, it was a segment on a show. I can't find it in my history. I originally found it from a link on this forum.
The bottom line was that heavier friend ate way more calories than the skinny friend. The heavier woman under estimated her intake and over estimated her friends.2 -
My father has been skinny all his life - he is now 78.
Sometimes, when we go out to dinner he seems to eat a lot so probably appears as one of these "How can he eat all that and be skinny" people - but he always eats very little for breakfast or lunch and doesnt have 'invisible calories' like sugar in coffee and doesnt eat sweets at home, well ,sometimes they have treat of chocolate after tea when guests are there but his idea of this is 2 squares of chocolate (mine is the whole block!) and eats a lot of high volume but calorie low things like fresh raw carrots ,fresh fruit, all bran cereal etc (which is why he eats seconds when we out to dinner because novelty and treat) he hardly watches TV, does not have a computer, he plays bowls and does active things like gardening, DIY projects, he walks places, he climbs stairs instead of elevators

I remember the show about that, I've been trying to remember what it was called for a week it was so much fun to watch!0

Are they fidgety? It's possible to accumulate a good amount of calorie burn through moving around during the day.3

I remember that link/show, I think. British. The thin person was tall with blonde hair and the heavier person had dark hair—both women. They thought the blonde had a fast metabolism and could eat whatever she wanted and the brunette had a slow metabolism. Turns out the blonde was normal and eating at maintenance for her active lifestyle and the brunette was way over eating for her activity level—her metabolism was normal, too.4 -
I have had friends that eat pretty constantly, and still struggle with being underweight. One had a medical condition that caused a super high metabolism, one was probably on drugs (judging by the times I came in to work to find painted bathtubs, toilets and sinks, that she had literally stayed at work the entire night doing) and one could honestly have gone either way, but was probably a combination.0

i'll take myself as an example to respond to you.
Back when i lived in the states, i ate 1-2 bowls of sugary cereals in the morning.
ate pizza or burger king for lunch.
then when i came home, i inhaled a 4 cheese frozen pizza.
for dinner i ate a pack of hamburger helper
and for dessert, 1-2 bowls of ice cream with lots and lots of chokolate sauce on.
i did not get overweight at all.
because i attended regular practice for wrestling and martial arts for 1-2 hours a day.
The moment i stopped doing that, i gained 20kg in less than 3 months on the same diet.
also in my experience, those that don't do the workout, tend to undereat the rest of the time when you don't see them eat. They recently did a documentary where they took people like that and put them on a similar diet. Turned out that all of them gained weight when eating a real diet, and they found out that they actually normally would undereat compared to others.5 -
How come some skinny people eat more than an overweight person and remain the same ?I see so many skinny people stuffing their face constantly and they stay the same all the time.I dont get it do you ? I would love to be one of those people lol

Well the roomie doesn't work, and I'm guessing the OP does? So I'm thinking hidden cameras.10 -
Perception does not always equal reality...11

It is easy
1. Go back in time
2. Get born to people who genetically have a faster then average metabolism so you have a faster then average metabolism
3. Once you have good genetics for metabolism , be one of those people who tends to do small fidgets and movements at all times so burn hidden calories
4. Be athletic so have more muscle that burn more calories at rest
5. Victory you can eat more then most11 -

I'm thinking op.should spend more.time worrying about herself than her room mate.
Is it just me that thinks of single white female.here
Haha you are so immature .Who said it was my roomate ? And who said I was worried ?Seriously you guys on MFP need to be a bit more educated and maybe read over what I posted again15 -

You said you live with the person. Your mom? Your wife? Sister? What difference does it make? I'm not sure why I assumed female, but if it's a guy, that's another reason they can eat more.
And it's not nice insulting people just because you're not getting the answers you're expecting. That's, erm, immature.30 -
Could be like me, and has a serious chronic disease that causes malabsorption. Be careful for wanting to become that "skinny friend".7

It's all about activity. I try for 15k steps a day... you can eat a lot more without gaining weight when your maintenance is 2300 calories vs 1600...2

My brother is one of these. His secret? He only eats once a day, and sometimes only ever other day. For whatever reason, he just doesn’t get hungry, and won’t eat unless somebody reminds him to. He’s been like that his entire life.7

On the surface my skinny husband appears the same. He'll go crazy at the all you can eat sushi joint and when at a friend's house....but when you keep a closer eye on things, he actually walks 60 min+ a day, only has about 150 calories for breakfast and will often go to bed feeling hungry.3

Seems like that would make it difficult to get adequate nutrition. Poor guy! I'd not trade my love and enjoyment of food for anything.4
