10/29 - (10k) Kooky Spooky
11/18 - (10k) Turkey Trek
12/09 - (HM) Fa La La Half Marathon
After compression and ice and mostly rest yesterday, I took the niggly calf for a light run this morning. It was "ok," but I think I'm going to not run until the race on Sunday. At most a super light and short run on Friday AM is the most I'll do.
Now I feel like climbing up the walls since I can't/shouldn't/won't run.
I had to elongate my HM training schedule anyway, so worst case, I skip this race altogether to heal, but that would bum me out because honestly the Halloween-themed medal is super on point (and also my birthday is Halloween so this one was kind of extra special). I have another 10k mid-November as part of the plan, so it's not like I'd be ill-equipped for the HM...I just really REALLY want to race this weekend. OTOH--screwing up the work I've put in for the HM just for a clever medal is rather silly when you think about it.

@JessicaMcB My back is better - still not perfect.
Got a short - slooow 3k in yesterday on a perfectly flat trail as a test - a few little twinges near the end but nothing big. Feels okay this morning. Will see how it handles Adult Swim Club tonight.
This Saturday is our end of year 7 Peaks Challenge in PR.
Not a sanctioned - formal race - no bibs, no clock, no official route ~35km and 7 hills ~1.2k of vertical - hate the thought of taping out ( DNS ) so it will be a roll out of bed call.
Especially since my truck is the Cookie Truck/Aid Station at the bottom of Hill 3 & 4 which are on opposite sides of a creek this way you go by it twice. Hill 3 is the easiest and Hill 4 is the hardest.2 -

Did you run alone? Seems like a run like this would be good to have a partner.0 -
@ctlaws44 Love the pics! And congratulations on the AG award! Loved the Cheesey "Cheese" dude!PastorVincent wrote: »@ctlaws44 I am jealous of your cool medal! Well done!
I'm jealous of his over all coolness.

I love how you could put this imagine into my head with your words! Who's really the cool one?!?! I assure you, I'm a full fledged nerd. I mean I'm an engineer at NASA. Do I even have to pull out my nerd membership card?!8 -

@PastorVincent if you started to pace with me and said do you mind if I run with you a bit, I would be fine. If you just started to pace next to me with no other interaction I would ask you what you want. Whizzing passed me with a good day would be fine with me, if you have a nice *kitten* you get extra points for being in front of me.
@zdyb23456 I agree with @garygse I wait until people are there. I find it EXTREMELY rude when people RSVP and then don’t show up.
@HonuNui beautiful trail. Love the turtle
@MNLittleFinn I think you should try to get in the Barkley Marathon – the Marathon that eats its young. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barkley_Marathons
@JessicaMcB $300 that’s just painful!
Edited because well the paragraph made no sense ha ha2 -

HA! You would have to ask my wife about that, I really do not look at my "kitten" often.

Wow, 160 posts behind. You folks would probably all have a second job as journalists if running did not take up so much of your time.
Congrats to all who raced last weekend and healing thoughts to those who are sick or injured.
I turned 51 yesterday and my health and fitness are night and day from when I hit 50. I was a 225 lb couch potato with a BMI of 35 and now I am 155 lbs with a BMI of 23 and will be running a half marathon in less than a month. And a lot of the best advice and inspiration I have found right here on the monthly challenge thread. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributes to the thread.
An added bonus is my 17y/o daughter is taking an interest in running and started a C25K program. I promised her I would run the program with her and offer moral support and run a 5K with her at completion. I remember how I struggled completing the program last year and this is a reminder of how far I have come. Have a great Tuesday!17 -

Close... I write novels.7 -
I ended up skipping my run last night and ended up butchering the deer, by myself. Son was supposed to be there so I could help him but he forgot and went to his girlfriends house. I wanted it done so I took care of it, but that meant it took me longer and while I was at it I took care of our hunting gear and next thing I know, there's no time. So that's 10 days since I last ran.
I swear, with all I have to get done at home and at work I'd skip running until mid November if it wasn't for needing to get Kody in shape for hunting. At least that's what I tell my wife. Tonight I'm planning on 8-9 miles if life doesn't get in the way.
The way this month is going it looks like I'll get about 80 to 85 miles in.
@allyphoe I hope your arch feels better soon. Good call cutting it short.
@Runningmischka you have an incredibly cute daughter! Sounds like you found a fantastic race. Someone may have answered this already but if you can run 15K on the road but having done it on a trail, you could likely do it, but you may have cramping during the race and will definitely have DOMs the next day. If you want to avoid that, I'd guess that you should pick a distance about half your maximum road distance, unless you can get out and trail on trails between then and now. If you can do that, go for about 2/3rds your max road distance. Delay your registration as long as you can (assuming it's not in danger of filling up) to get a better gauge of your trail running condition. Trail running puts your secondary muscle groups to use far more than road running does because of the uneven terrain. Your aerobic fitness can easily make you think you can run farther than you should when you switch to trails.
@hjeppley congrats on the AG placement, and to your son! I used to geocache with our kids when they were young. I miss those days. Fun stuff!
@skippygirlsmom every time you post something about Skip it further elevates my opinion of her. What a thoughtful daughter!
@ariceroni love the photos. The IAT is awesome! Forget the AT thru-hike, go for fast packing! I would love to thru-hike a major trail sometime. I wish I had done it before kids. It sounds like you've picked the perfect time in your life. I do plan on fast packing the Superior Hiking Trail after our kids are gone but that's just 300 miles. One thought...try hiking without the heavy hiking boots and try using light trail running shoes. I used to always use heavy ankle high hiking boots when hiking but no longer. If I can run an ultra on trails with lightweight running shoes, I can certainly hike with them.
@ctlaws44 congrats on great race finish! Great medal!
@MNLittleFinn take it easy for a few weeks then start training for Zumbro.
@LaurenFOB2301 are you kidding me? 10-11 minute miles is fantastic for where you're at!! I was running 12-13 miles at that point. How long to reach 7-8 minute miles? Over what distance? I think there are far to many variables for anyone provide that answer. It depends on your age, your training, injuries and your genetics. You will see the greatest improvement early in your running and the incremental gains decrease as time goes by. Work on the incremental improvement and you'll be there before you know it. As long as you see long term progress, you're doing great. Don't be concerned about no progress or even backward progress in any short term. That's to be expected, particularly in the summer when the heat will slow you down. I'd suggest looking at where you're at every 3 to 6 months, and compare it to where you were a year previously.
@garygse you had that marathon finish after only running for 15 months?!?! WOW!
@juliet3455 you'll get it back, after your back mends, I'm sure.
@_nikkiwolf_ great photos, I'm glad your run turned out so well!
@Orphia it is the same Ice Age Trail. It's completely in Wisconsin and is routed along the terminal moraine from the last Ice Age. It's planned for 1200 miles, of which 600 miles are complete.
@PastorVincent keep in mind that walking is a BIG part of running ultras. Even the elite will walk some portions of the course unless it's relatively flat. During my 6hr23min 50K I walked about 50 minutes of that from what I can tell. I'm sure @MNLittleFinn walked a much higher percentage of his because of the greater distance, and the much more challenging course.
** ALL CAUGHT UP ***
for now...

@7lenny7 That's pretty much my plan. Rest of This week is pretty much total rest. I'll get into some running next week, depending on how I feel, then start building into Zumbro training..... really thinking about going for the century.1

Might as well, what's another 38 miles?3 -
Behind on the thread but I've scanned. I generally avoid people while running, but I like @skippygirlsmom 's idea of falling in behind somebody with a nice butt :-D I'll change my route for sure just to avoid people. I get annoyed when I go down our little trail and there's too many people. Speaking of which, Friday there was an old guy teaching his grandson about fishing and I swear that dude looked right at me coming toward him and cast his fishing line anyway. LOL I've had this happen several times with the fishermen.
Sunday I did walk .5 mi, run 3, walk .5 (but of course I take walk breaks in the run part too). Then yesterday I had to work until 10pm so no running. And my butt hurt all day and it hurts today. Right in the center of my left butt cheek. Definitely need to do more stretching and rolling. Sigh. Why can't my body just love me back for exercising?
Really hope to get my run tonight but I am also super busy tonight cooking for 50 people. So goes my life.....4 -
Happy belated birthday @cameronheel ! That is an awesome transformation. Congratulations!0

Exactly! I often feel this way. And gosh, that's a lot of people to cook for. Good luck!1 -
Congratulations, @eponine1984, for finishing the C25k program and getting in 3.6!
Nice 3.3 miles for me this morning.
Well, my monthly goal has been blown to smithereens by this piriformis issue. I have a whopping 39 miles out of a scheduled 115.1 -

LOL. I guess that's one way to look at it. Part of me says I already have done longer than a 50, so why not go for the 100 at Zumbro? Superior 50 is the one I really want to hit for that distance, it's almost in my back yard. I'd go for the century on that, but it starts the friday of the first week of school, and teacher probably shouldn't miss that day.....0
