Beth- So glad your dad is doing well. I have been in Hospital twice for sbo and it is no fun. So far I have not had to have surgery but go 4-5days without food or water just iv fluids.
Terry - I like those sappy movies two but it is always obvious how they will end.
Made my Cajun chicken gumbo this afternoon. Will freeze it tonigh to take to DS’s for Christmas Eve dinner.
My goal for the holidays was to maintain and I am hanging on by a thread. I love the matra no two days in a row.

I've been missing in action with a family pet crisis. Our dog fell off of a hassock in our bedroom and damaged his back. We took him to our vet who wanted him to have surgery and referred us to a specialty vet clinic. They declined to perform the surgery due to his age and condition, and sent us to another vet clinic miles away. They also declined to perform surgery. They gave us a bill for the evaluation anyway and sent us home. We went from there back to our vet and worked up a plan using a number of medicines. Our dog is doing better today, and can walk outside to do his business. We have an appointment for him to be seen again on 12/29.
On the even brighter and most fabulous side, we have a brand new grandson! He and mom are healthy and doing well. Our son is in the clouds with pleasure and happiness. Baby's name is still a secret.

DH's tooth is out. His face is swollen and he is miserable; but he has good painkillers that make him go to sleep! (Thank God) This tooth was one of his upper molars. His upper jawbone seems much stronger than the lower. Earlier this year he had a tooth out on the lower jaw and the bone splintered and kept coming up through his gums for about a month or so after the removal. I really hope this doesn't happen with this one.
I feel for him. Mine is still giving me trouble and it has been weeks.klanders30 wrote: »DH is in a terrible mood, the holidays set him off horribly. I'm just ignoring it and going about my business. We've never had the happiest time together at this time of year, I've grown use to it I suppose. No regrets, he is actually quite good company the rest of the year, go figure!
Is there something he'd like to do rather than the traditional Christmas stuff?
I like the whole Christmas thing, but a couple of my favourite Christmasses with my husband have been when we've gone away, just the two of us, and have spent a few days cycling, swimming and hiking ... with no family or anything around.cityjaneLondon wrote: »My cancer friend managed to scald her arm while making tea in the hospital this morning. Oh, ouch. Having burnt my left foot to the bone with boiling water, I cringe when I read something like this!!Happy Friday before Christmas!
Machka, I’m usually in bed by 7 or 8 so that I can read until 11:00. Although first I check in with my MFP friends.
Every night? How do you manage it?

Is that your place? Very nice! I could be quite comfortable there.wildhorsewendy wrote: »I discovered that my mysterious hiking boots that I found abandoned upstairs (where my kids, their boyfriends and visitors often just leave unwanted clothes and things) did just fine on a challenging hike and did not put any blisters or black toes on my feet. I do need to update my day pack. I was using one that actually belongs to my horse Mani-he won it as a prize at a horse show for being so clever- but it didn't sit quite right and made my shoulders and neck ache. So I will be keeping an eye out for the sales and get myself a newer model made for women. And I am going to trial using a walking pole as I could see they came in handy in places. I do like having my hands free for grabbing onto rocks but if I get a telescoping stick, I can hang it off my pack until I need it. It was a good "learning" hike for me. Plus I spent the whole time talking to the others about their favourite hikes and places they'd been. So entertaining!
That is one thing I like about doing things like this with a group of people ... it is entertaining and you get tips.
Just getting into running, I've found a couple people at work who I can talk to. It's helpful! One had loaned me a book over the Christmas season.

Rye and Beth: Thank you for the photos of your homes. So beautiful! I thought I was looking at a magazine, your decorations are just that pretty.
Beth: Holding your parents in my thoughts.
Karen in NY: Sorry DH is acting like a Grinch.
Wendy: Woot-Woo-Hoo!!!! Proud of you. May your future hiking adventures be just as fun and a bit less dramatic.
Heather: As always, your writing is superb. Can't wait for your next book. Hoping your good friend has some happier days ahead.
Katla: Sorry about your fur-baby. I will send him reiki. Can't hurt, right?
Lanette: Glad DH is eating. I echo your sentiments about never marrying again. Once is enough for my lifetime.
A little snow on the ground here, accompanied by super cold temps in the morning. I had to pull the BIG down coat out of the back of the closet to walk to the gym this AM. Sang more sections of Handel's Messiah, and started watching the movie "Bad Santa". So grateful I have the fitness room to myself.
Eating has been 'festive', but feeling no guilt at all. DH has been enjoying the treats, and since we don't socialize or have family around us anymore, this is about as fun as our holiday is going to get. I'll be getting tamales for our Christmas meal. My mom, who was from El Salvador, always made them from scratch when I was growing up. All the kids on the block would line up in an assembly line to add in the various savory bits like chicken, capers, pimento, and green olives. Then, they would be wrapped up in paper and tied with string.
Stay well friends. Smile through the stress. We can do this.

Went to the deep water class. Boy, it seems like so long since I've been there. The plan for tomorrow is to do a Stephanie Vittorio Body DVD
When I got to the class I realize "oh c***, I forgot to eat breakfast". Fortunately, I have some mints with me so I had them just to get something in my stomach
Sharon - I hope you get better fast
Wendy - BIG CONGRATS to you
Lisa - what mountain range are you going to? (hope, hope, hope it's near me)
Heather - my heart goes out to your friend. Elizabeth was a really special person
Terry - trust me, staying away from those cookies was HARD. Today the gal who teaches the water class gave us some candy. Well, I was super hungry since I didn't have any breakfast so I had 2 kisses. The thing is, that really didn't affect me at all. I only had them so that I had something in my stomach since I was so hungry after class. First the mints before class, then the chocolates after class. But home to have my oatmeal with strawberries and almond milk.
The Y started this new guest policy. Get this -- it would cost someone $5 if they come with a Y member and $10 if they don't come with a member. At those prices, there is no way I would use the Y. Actually, the Y by Jess charges you $5 but I have guest passes and use them the few times I can use the Y. If it weren't for the guest passes, I would only use the fitness center at the hotel. Heck, I've already paid for it.
Stopped at WalMart to get more cod so it can start to defrost and also wanted to get more sardines. They're pretty filling. They don't carry the brand that I like, so I got another brand.
Will be leaving in a few to take Jess to the airport.
Rye - I do hope one of those packages is for me Great picture
Beth - Prayers coming from NC. Update: they must have worked, so glad he's better somewhat. I know that this puts your mind somewhat at ease
katla - so sorry about your dog. But big congrats on the grandson. What a Christmas present!
Took Jess to the airport. She called, she's in TN now.

The Woo Icon ... on the app it is much more recognizable as a negative ... one of the eyes is bigger than the other in a questioning look.
Pat ... I've been suggesting home care or comfort care for my parents for some time ... it fell on deaf ears before, I believe my Mom is listening now. My Dad is not doing well in the hospital and they do not want to open him up for another surgery ...
I thought all my shopping was done and then decided to pick up a "couple" of things ... oh my ... am I exhausted by the lines and the traffic and the parking nightmare ... but my fitbit had a happy dance early in the day!!
I've enjoyed your Christmas photos so much, I'm going to try and share a few of mine ... forgive me if they come in jumbo sized ... I'm a techno boob!

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening Friends,
Michele, I have always thought you had great willpower. I could never make/bake all those goodies that you do and not eat some.
Wendy, I’m so impressed with your hike and re-hike and not getting injured. Way to go.
Kelly, congrats on the new kiddies in your care. I think they made a wise choice.
Heather, sorry for your friend and I do hope the end is an easy transition. Congrats on all the work you have done on your memoir. I know it hasn’t been easy but you have plowed through. (((Hugs)))
Terry, I enjoyed the beautiful Christmas ornament and just pretended that it said, “Merry Christmas”. Lol
Beth, prayers going out your way for all of your family. (((Hugs))) *later* so glad to hear that the surgery went well.
Katla, congrats on the new grandson! What a joy. I hope your doggie gets better soon.
I love the pictures and all the Christmas trees. Once the gifts are gone, to me the tree looks so sad that I often take mine down the day after Christmas. I hope you all get everything you wish for this Christmas. Much of what we wish for doesn’t come in a box or bag. DH and I went to buy our Christmas steaks today. DD said that she still wants green bean casserole so I guess that will be on the menu.
Sending love, good thoughts and sunshine to all of you.
I Love you

Today was the party at my line dance class. We danced ten dances to holiday songs. Almost everyone wore festive holiday clothing and lots of people brought treats. Everyone seemed to have fun including the two brand new students who scrambled to keep up with the dances that were all unfamiliar. There was so much food and all the "food pushers" were urging me to try everything. I admired the food and spent the break time talking to people and ate nothing. Jake came early to pick me up so he watched dancing for about 15 minutes and was able to select treats (he loves fudge and there were two kinds). The class gave me a rose, a card signed by most of them and an extremely generous gift certificate to our favorite Chinese restaurant (the place we're going for lunch Christmas Day). A great time was had by all and now after laundering a few things, I'll be able to put away all the holiday paraphernalia.
I am very fortunate that Jake and I are on the same page about holidays.....we celebrate none of them and we buy no gifts either for each other or for anyone else.
No snow expected so the streets will be dry here for the next few days of walking.
Stats for today:
*20,000 steps
*176 minutes walking Sasha and Bessie
*66 minutes on the exercise bike
*90 minute nap
*dogs to the groomer

Beth so glad your father’s doing better! I love your home and holiday decor. You home looks like the place my mom always strived for so elegant and uncluttered. Instead, she always ended up with cozy clutter like mine.
BookcasesOur living room has 13 floor to ceiling bookcases my husband built for us over a decade ago when he was out of work. Plus the three built in next to the fireplace. Plus a bookcase or two in the bedrooms, and hallway.... all full. I read lots of non-fiction (especially biographies), and fiction in the mystery and sci-if categories mostly. My husband reads sci-fi, fantasy and horror and some thrillers - only occasional non fiction. I estimate 85-95% of the books we own have been read by at least one of us.
Books: We both were scarred for life when our mother’s got rid of our childhood favourite books when we went to college. About five years after we married we discover that we had read and loved all the same books as children things like Harriet the Spy, the Phantom tollbooth, Alvin’s secret code, freaky Friday, From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, the forgotton door ... well I could go on and on. So what did that wonderful man I marry do for me for Christmas? He bought all those childhood classic books for our library! We almost never get rid of books unless it is to replace a hardcover with a paperback.
Reading: It isn’t always possible with being busy and all, but I would devote at least 2-3 hours a day reading. It is my favourite pastime by far, and I admit to resenting exercise because reading time is the first thing I end up cutting out to get my exercise in.
Gifts: oh, my yes that looks like a lot of gifts but it is the whole family gifts (11 people) and those are from me, my DH and my MiL (who brought the gifts over here a couple of days ago).
My living room: thanks for the compliments. I guess our house style is cozy cluttered. You could pick up our home and put it in the Mountains near Aspen Colorado and it would fit in well. Lots of unpainted wood and paneling, wood and leather furniture. Browns and beiges with primary color unexpected accents. Both DH and I love the arts & crafts and mission style furniture - and I throw in occasional mid century Art Deco inspired colorful pieces of furniture if I can find them cheap. My favourite compliment on my home was a couple of Christmases ago my eldest niece said she never wanted to do christmas any other place because our place was the most homey. It is especially nice if the temperature allows us to light a fire in the fireplace.
Well, I got no good sleep last night, I was up at least once an hour with a hot flash, leg cramp, need to use the restroom, etc. how do I know this? I forgot to take off my Apple Watch and it recorded a standing up every hour all night long! Not a record I wanted. So it is early to bed for me now. Please cross your fingers that I can get a couple of undisturbed sleep cycles in tonight!
Happy and healthy wishes!

Are those the drop-in prices? If so, that's pretty good. In fact, the $5 one is excellent!
Our biggest and nicest gym here has a drop-in rate of $21 ... and the gym we actually go to has a drop-in rate of $8.50 for students (me!) and $10 for over-50s (me and my husband) ... so we pay $18.50 each time we go. Compared with our other option of $42, we'll happily take the $18.50.
But if they were offering drop-ins for $5, we might go more often.

I did my first ever 6 km run today!! And it wasn't a flat one ... it had 91 metres of climbing.
My pace isn't great ... 7.16/km ... but that's the same pace as my 5 km on December 9th, on a flatter route so I figure that's not too bad given that this is the first time I've run that distance.
And apparently that was a 500 calorie burn, which I need these days.
On my walk home after the run ... I plan my routes so they end a kilometre or two away from home ... I stopped in at our little grocery store and bought paneer and spinach for Saag Paneer. I made it last year, and it turned out quite well. However, it seems to me that I added more veggies than just the spinach to thicken it a bit.
This is from the Slender Kitchen recipe site ... it's an easy, low-calorie recipe.

Rye, I love to read too. So I "Read" constantly even while exercising, doing housework, driving, watering and weeding the garden...You should go to your library and ask them to help you set up audio library on your phone/or computer so you can multi-task and get your exercise in without resenting it cutting into your reading time. I look forward to my exercising just so I can finish an exciting book. LOL I also love many of those childhood books you mentioned...
Now that I have cancelled my gym membership (I was paying$24 a week for me and my daughter to go-but she is moving out of town and I don't want to go on my own now as I will feel lonely without her--I've decided to do my kettle bell workouts at home and when I want to use machines I will go to our local swimming pool complex as they have a gym area, and then I can swim and use the hot tubs as well. I think it costs around $4.50 a session and you can stay as long as you like.
I have been experimenting lots and figuring out how to find and save cute graphics so I can pop them into my posts! Wendy

LADIES - IF something starts showing up in my posts here that is 'dirty, nasty, or otherwise insulting' please let me know somehow. Microsoft has put out a 'new' operating system that will 'update' your computer to Microsoft Edge. WORST program since VISTA and there is NOT a way of correcting it or going back to whatever you had prior to that. Found this out when I opened my computer after 4 weeks of not doing so (therefore updates were not being done on a daily basis). Now I can use my Outlook email program. Earlier today ... could not 'respond' or 'forward' any emails; now I cannot even 'send' an email, therefore I do not know if I am able to even receive emails. I am HOT about this. Like I said - worst 'operating system' since VISTA. Microsoft is going to blame your ISP; your ISP is going to blame Microsoft. Anything that gets posted on my remarks here in the community is NOT mine if it is 'dirty, nasty, or insulting to anyone'. I would never do that to any of you. I've post this on FB because my sister asked others about getting 'fake' friends (or people who she already knew were on FB). She was asking others if they were having the same issue. People are telling her to 'ignore' them. I have never felt like I had been 'rack over the hot coals' until now.

Wendy - That's a wild hike but you emerged victorious.
You have a beautiful soul and people are attracted to that. I love that your farm is Sanctuary.
Becca- Some people do fall asleep during float therapy. I usually meditate. Some people say it feeds their creative energy. I know that my body feels so much better after.
Rye- It's starting to look a lot like Christmas at your house. I love those book cases.
Cathy - Where are you in Alberta? Did you get the dump of white stuff that we have?
Beth - Prayers for your Father, Mother and for you. Praying for the best out come.
Katla - I hope your poor dog makes a full recovery.
Congratulations on the new bundle of joy!
SueBDew - The thought of Cajun chicken gumbo has me licking my chops.
Janetr - It looks like Mia is a creative soul. So cute!
I'm not sure where to start but things are not going exactly as I would like with Larry. I am not sure what he thinks working on our marriage means. As far as I can see he has done nothing differently. There was an instant anger incident the other night. Unfortunately it was the night of the dance performance and happened in front of Harmony. Today it was over where my Toyota was parked. He decided to tell me that he is divorcing me. I said okay, do you have a lawyer? He says he is not divorcing me until spring after his friend's car is done. He says we will then sell the house and split. Ummm.....you think you get to decide the time frame and exactly how we will do this. I discovered that he has been reading all my text messages on my phone. I kind of wish this had happened after Christmas. He says it could have been worked out if I just shut up. Also I have had a "Free Ride" for 35 years. Wow! Now he is talking to me as if he never said all that crap earlier.
I didn't get much done after work today. Tomorrow is a new day though.
I was also told that I am no longer Fun. Not sure what that even means. I think I'm fun and I have fun.
I am finding joy in this world. Here's some photos of the deer who think they live in my front yard and Harmony with the bear she made.

1) Microsoft Edge is something completely different from Vista. Vista is an operating system like Windows 7 and Windows 10. Microsoft Edge is a web browser like Internet Explorer.
2) Microsoft Edge is Microsoft's new version of Internet Explorer which comes with Windows 10. When you install Windows 10 you will get Microsoft Edge as your default browser. However, if you don't like Microsoft Edge (and many don't), use Chrome or Firefox.
3) When you made the choice to upgrade to Windows 10, and thus installed Microsoft Edge because Microsoft Edge comes with Windows 10, you would indeed have to reset your Outlook.
4) Upgrading to Windows 10 (and Microsoft Edge) will not cause 'dirty, nasty, or insulting' comments to suddenly appear and will not create 'fake friends' or anything like that.
5) If your sister is getting friend requests from people she already knew were on Facebook, those friends were hacked. And it has nothing whatsoever to do with operating systems or web browsers. Their Facebook accounts were hacked and they need to fix it.

Machka, thanks for clarifying that. Cyber world can be so confusing at the best of times. By the way, I found pav in an egg tonight when I did my big Christmas shop at the cheap supermarket that I rarely go to because it is usually too crowded. Went late to avoid the lines. Just spotted it when I was picking up strawberry jello. Reminded me of the good old days when pantyhose used to come in an egg!
Dreamwriter, Sorry to hear that Larry is up to his yo yo head games with you. So distressing especially at holiday time when you would like to focus on joy instead. I'm glad you can have fun despite the nastiness. I love the pics of the deer in the snow and lovely Harmony (such a pretty name!) I often wonder if having a man is worth the trouble, lol. I think visiting a male once a month would probably be enough for me.
I think I might become quite annoying with these silly graphics! Wendy

Morning from Murphy, NC, way over in the Eastern corner of North Carolina.
Michele - it appears we may have missed you on the way, we swung over past Greenville, but Corey was driving, and stopping anywhere was not an option. Today is probably going to be driving down into the northern edges of Georgia and South Carolina, as we take our time on the way back. He does the driving, and I just enjoy the ride. This is his vacation from being a full-time caregiver, so I'm letting him decide the route. The Nantahala Gorge alone was worth the ride. Beautiful.
Heather - you're a gifted writer, as I think you probably already know. Thank you for that piece of your memoir. It's so hard to yank yourself back into the real world when you're living in the world you're writing of... Hope things go well for your friend.
Beth - thinking of your dad and your mom. Hope things continue going well.
JanetR - Mia looks like such a happy little soul!
I can't comment on Larry's antics because I'm not allowed to cuss on this forum, and *kitten*, which is what replaces cusswords here, is just not sufficient.
Thanks to everyone for the pictures, such a lovely window into each of your lives. They're a gift. And speaking of gifts, had to share my daughter's gift. She posted this up on Facebook as we were on our trip down--she took the kids to a restaurant, Red Robin, and then shopping for gifts for their daddy. The kids wanted to take their "Daddy Dolls" with them, soft toys made with their daddy's image, in uniform. You can just see them in the picture. Note, just before this story happened, the folks at Red Robin restaurant wouldn't let her pay for their meals after they saw the dolls.
Well, another gift has been given to the kids and I. While getting our photo with Santa, Santa asked the kids who was the doll of. The kids yelled daddy. Then asked the kids to help mommy out while daddy is gone and then looked at me said you are strong and asked if I am doing okay. I was until he asked, it's usually when asked I break down. But as I'm crying I said I'm doing good lol! Then Santa said kids, let me salute your dad, then he saluted the dolls and looked at me and said Merry Christmas and thank you.
As I step off the side to dry my face and a lady, her husband and 4 kids come up to us and said they saw us getting the photo with the dolls and asked if he was deployed. I informed them yes and she asked if she could give the kids each a $15 Target gift card for Christmas. After they gave the kids the cards, I cried even more and hugged them lol!
So I'm still standing trying to dry my face from Santa's remarks, and this family of 6, and here comes another family. The gentleman explained he was a pastor and would like to pray for the kid's dad and us, I said okay, I'd love that. Then they were on their way and I felt okay enough to finally go check out.
As I get in the line, the pastor, his wife, and two kids came up to me and said they'd like for us to have a gift card, it was $100. So I'm back at stage one in tears from all the overwhelming love today. We've never had this happen before and I haven't cried this much since the night before Brian left and the day Brian left.
Thank you to the Red Robin staff, the family of six and the pastor and his family. With the Bass Pro gift card we bought Brian's Christmas presents which we already had in the cart to purchase before this wonderful gift.
Edit: no, I don't go out doing this stuff on purpose. The kids wanted to bring the dolls with them today and to take the picture.
There are still good people in this world!
