We packed away all our Christmas decorations and cleaned the house. My kids helped and good thing, because I almost fell down the attic stairs trying to lug a big container through the opening in the ceiling. Thankfully my daughter helped break my fall! We are both ok!
I held off running hoping it would warm up, but it didn’t. It was cold today! I wore my Christmas present- a headband to keep the forehead and ears warm. Easily the best Christmas present this year I also picked up a tech jacket for $4 from Lidl yesterday. Lidl is becoming one of my favorite places to shop!!
I swear the cold weather makes me unnaturally fast! Managed a 8:40 pace for 5 miles.

end-of-month question?
What are your goals for this next year?
Where do you want to be a year from now?
How do you see your training evolving?
My goal next year is to win the Mega Millions and be retired in a semi reasonable sized mansion by this time next year.
OK, realistic goals? hmm.... I like to be back into my old racing shape by my next HM in April and maybe get another age group win in it. That's the Oak Barrel Half Marathon at the Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg, TN. I got a 3rd place AG win there 2 years ago, and they gave me as an award half of the top of one of their used barrels.
How do I see my training evolving? Well? I, for the first time in months may come close to making goal this month. So we will see if that keeps up.8 -

@zdyb23456 if I had a dollar for every time I fell out of the attic I'd be rich. Glad you both are ok. Great buy on the jacket and awesome pace.0 -
@RunsOnEspresso - I have gloves that I wear when I lift with suede on the palms and fingers but this is more my hands getting tired and are stiff. I have a contracture disease that overtime limits the range of motion in my fingers and when it flairs up they get really stiff. Unfortunately the things we would normally do to increase range of motion and even lifting itself, actually cause it to get worse so I usually just do squeezes with different types of balls made for that.
@hjeppley - Beautiful picture!
@skippygirlsmom - the laser treatments are a way to increase blood flow to an injured area to increase healing. I had it done on my PF too, years ago with great results. The sports chiro did that and some other treatments with vibrations that really loosen up tight muscles. He did targeted vibration last time I was there on my hip and hamstring and it made a huge difference in the pain. This time the laser and some stretching made it a bit sore and the targeted and general vibration helps to keep the hamstring from tightening up along with the supporting muscles in my hip and glute.
@zdyb23456 - I am glad you and your daughter are ok after that fall! Isn't Lidl a grocery store?
I am taking a rest day today. Couldn't run today after seeing the doctor anyways so it worked out. He said I can run again tomorrow just to keep it easy and short... I see everyone running in cold cold weather and no one wants to hear me complain but it is going to be in the 80s again here for the next few days. I really just want it to stay below 70. I hate running when it gets much over 75, I will do it but Hobbes the Vizsla has to sit it out.3 -
@shanaber that sounds interesting I hope it helps.0

Non-running update: Lately I've been feeling like a beat up old man. This morning I realized that, because I woke up feeling healthy and alive again. Got 3 steps into the hallway jog to time the eggs before I stopped because I'm not allowed to run yet.
In 3 days, I can test myself with 2 miles. I am hopeful that this will go well; *not running* is beginning to feel less like rest and more like taper along about now. Yeah, it's cold; high today was about 15 F (-11 C), but it doesn't bother me much because I can't go out and run anyway.
Oh, yeah. I may not be feeling very beat up, but I guess I *am* an old man. Celebrated my 62nd birthday with a trip to Subway for a turkey sub on wheat. That, and 3 sets of 35 pull ups plus 3 sets of 70 push ups this morning just like any other day. Can't run, but upper body stuff is OK.
@skippygirlsmom - The last picture I saw that was labeled "Alabama Snow" was a custom Christmas card from a former work associate in Alabama. It showed him with his family, standing in a cotton field. Which reminded me of flying into Pensacola to drive to Atmore, Alabama in November in the 1990s. I kept seeing dirty snow in the ditches by the road. Turned out to be scrap cotton. I ended up turning on the air conditioning in the motel room, in the middle of the night, in November.8 -
@MobyCarp Happy birthday. Oh yes when they harvest the cotton it's a mess. It's all over the roads and sides of the streets.0
-
@MobyCarp Happy Birthday! Yeah, your "old man" upper body workout puts most of us to shame... and once you're running again, your "easy" pace will still be faster than my fast pace! Hope the rest and healing will have worked out for you! Good luck!
@shanaber -- I had to look at your profile to see where you hailed from and figured it was in the southern hemisphere, but nope, just southern CA! I love your quote on your profile page! Good luck with your run tomorrow!0 -

The farms around here are really good about keeping the cotton out of the roads. I live right by two fields that do cotton part of the year and have never seen it in the streets. Maybe it all goes in the canal with all the other garbage? I will have to watch next time and see!0 -

Passed on an invitation to do an outdoor run early this morning, just wasn't feeling it (either the early or the cold). Instead I baked dog cookies and later bundled up and took said spoiled dog out for a hike in the more sheltered-from-the-wind woods. I saw an owl and a couple of woodpeckers up close among other birds along the way, so it was a nice one! No time to get gloves off for a picture though, and it was bad enough when I had to do the dog poop bag so I was not exposing my hands again.
Finally made it to the Y to hit the treadmill this afternoon for 3 miles, which puts me at 90.7 out of my goal of 93 (goal was to average of 3 miles/day for December, I'm averaging 3.36 right now).
Coach has posted alternate plans for tomorrow's run groups if the temps are as expected to be (wind chills -15 F or below they will not hold outdoor groups). I'm kind of pleased to have an opportunity to do an indoor speed workout as a change of pace and, as mentioned before, I'm not feeling this weather at all.

I was kind of hoping that over Christmas holidays that y'all would slow down a bit. Haha. I know better!
I am not doing so well on keeping up on here due to running all over the place for the holidays and then work keeping me busy. I lost one guy due to promotion and now another one quit, so I am down 2 techs right now. So not only am I rolling out two major pieces of software starting Jan1, I am doing it short-handed. YEAH!
Running: ummmm, I'm not doing so hot on that front either. I haven't done more than 3.2 miles at one time all month. And yesterday, when trying out new running gear, I felt a tweak in the glute again. So I am back to PT, stretching, rolling and seeing how it feels later. Not doing so hot on swimming either. I'm a mess. HAHA.
@Elise4270 Goals...
1 - consistency - this goes for a lot of things. More consistent in my training (which includes running, swimming, strength, stretching). More consistent in time with family (my boys specifically) and more consistent with my health.
2 - complete the Triathlon in March and not die.
3. Lose the rest of the 100 lbs I set out to lose (down 50 so far).
Where do I see myself next year?
I am going to the the lottery winner, living in a big house and 50 lbs lighter. LOL At least 50 lbs lighter anyway.
I have loved this group since starting running in July and I am hoping to still keep up with y'all in 2018!!
@rheddmobile I am with you. Probably not ever going to be a long distance runner. I just am trying to stay healthy and keep the RA and old age from taking over like it almost did this year.
@HonuNui HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Sorry I am so late. Great pics!
@garygse Great news on the running. Don't go too fast, but still great news.
@WandaVaughn I am so sorry you were so sick! Don't worry about how fast. @mobycarp probably gave the best answer. You will bounce back I am sure.
@MNLittleFinn OMG! Frick, that is cold! I am such a wuss. You cold weather people are amazing to me. I would HAVE to have a treadmill for that cold.
@Jessicamcb so sorry about the dog bite and irresponsible owners.
@dutchandkiwi sweet Christmas present!
@kgirlhart you too!!! I love new gear! I was out in the cold drizzle yesterday too because I had to try out some "cold" weather gear.
@MobyCarp HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! You are the fastest, coolest and running knowledgeable "old" man I know. And you are not old. I know you hate not running, but you will be back. Know that we love you here!!!
Christmas was really good, but I am glad that the crazy is over. We have to travel to too many family members houses to really enjoy it. My boys were crazy hyper for the last few days which makes for some long days, but I love seeing their excitement. I got a little bit of workout stuff/gear which I loved. I got a new mount for my phone on my bike, a Buff to wear when it's "cold" and new running gloves. I tried those out yesterday and they did amazing at keeping my hands warm enough that I wasn't in pain before I got home. And I got some pull-up assistance straps so I am going to start working on my upper body strength as soon as I get home tonight. One day I should be able to do an unassisted pull-up. I should have put that as one of my 2018 goals.!
Happy holidays, Merry Christmas and Festivus to all!3 -
@seanevan10 Running in cold just takes layering. I should have had a 4th layer on top this morning, but I have 3 more days in this training week (training week is mon-Sun) to get it right.0
-
well, it's official, I'll be closing out my 2017 on a 800m single track loop at 2100 in -22F weather on 21/31. This is going to rock.4
-
@shanaber yes Lidl is a grocery store, similar to Aldi. They just opened one near my house and their groceries are super cheap. They sell all sorts of interesting things in the middle of the store. They are currently selling a clothing line by Heidi Klum among other things. Last week I picked up a flat iron for $13!3
