Machka- I loved the article you posted about mental toughness. Have you read Angela Duckworth's book, Grit? It is a good one, with a lot of science behind who has it and the whys and how to get some.
This link is from a race that took place in May of 2017; but it just came to my attention. The Tarahumara are a tribe of native americans who, due to their lifestyle, are extraordinarily phenomenal runners. AND they run either barefoot or in sandals made by themselves of tire rubber. Christopher MacDougall (marathon runner) wrote a book about his search for this tribe and a "white" man who left city life and lives with the tribe and learned to run like them. The book is called Born To Run and it is a REALLY inspirational read. I read it when I first started running and it was one of those "life changing" books for me.

If the link doesn't work for whatever reason. Search for Tarahumara 50k marathon 2017.1 -
Oooh Wendy, I am sensing some tough love is in order for those dear daughters of yours....
Living at home should be a temporary thing. Rent should be discussed. Respect, (like telling you if she will be staying someplace else for the night), should be implemented. Long term goals should be discussed. They should be in the drivers seat of their own lives. Maybe too tough? I realize raising boys is so different than girls.... Hugs!! You got this!

About the year of no shopping, the woman who wrote the book made guidelines for the year that limited their shopping to necessities and excluded all the shopping she had previously done for personal entertainment. It was too extreme even for me but got me thinking about the extent to which I could do without a lot of what I bought. Ask yourself the question, "How could my life be better with less? " It's an interesting exercise3 -

OK you do have your hands full with 4 kids still at home! I am 55, a retired Navy Chiefs wife, married 33 years, have 3 sons. One is stationed in Washington state at a squadron. Another is in transition, having done his 4 years in the Navy, married, and is going to have the Navy pay for his electrical college, when he does start. Wife is starting first, also out of the Navy, studying to be a nurse. My youngest has just entered the Nuclear Navy, so he will be in the next 2 years.
I have recommitted myself, (just without the straight jacket), to losing 50 lbs this year. I am presently 244.8 lbs. Oh to get into Onederland again!
Nice to meet you!

Becca,
You must have had an exciting time being married to a Navy Chief? Did you travel a lot during that time?
Karen UK
Well when I met him, he was a 1st class petty officer. So it was a couple years before he made Chief. We spent 7 years (2 tours), in Japan, and the rest in California, at different places every 4 years. He retired with 20 years in, at the age of 37. At that point, I recall the Navy just signing him out, not retiring him. So I remember having two kids, pregnant with third, the Navy not paying us, husband learning how to wear a civilian suit looking for a job, me a non-driver, and living in Fairfield, California. I would yell at my dear husband saying there is nothing fair about this place! Its 105' outside, you have moved me to hell! Lol!
My last son, now in Navy Nuke school, never was a Navy brat, never knowing that life of always moving. He was our retirement bonus! I can look at him and always remember we got out in 1998.
We have lived in 16 different places during our 33 year marriage. Some for just a year until we got on base housing. Its been a great journey so far!

Thank you Becca, what a lovely life story. You have four handsome men in your family, you must be so proud of them all?

Wow, you guys are a busy bunch. I love the posts though – so many great ideas as well – I love the idea of only allowing myself 20 minutes of internet time (well, not really because I’m at a desk most of the day when my husband is not traveling, but I can limit my “play” time to 20 minutes)
@judefit18 – I also am limiting my online purchases in 2018. Since I know I will soon have an empty nest (within the next 10 years maybe) I’m starting to declutter now. Since I love instant gratification – I’m a big online shopper. Now I just delete all those “sale” emails without even reading them – it’s already saved me a bunch of time (and money)
@margaretturk – We own rental properties and that’s where I’ve been all morning – unfreezing pipes. Luckily, we have propane heaters that we can get under crawl spaces – you just have to be very careful. I always tell our 2nd floor tenants to keep the water dripping and the pressure off the pipes.
Penny – hope your thumb heals quickly. I’m a quilter, I keep waiting to slice off part of a finger when cutting strips…. I’ve seen some bad ones.
Hoping to take a short break and leave for a warmer Florida on Thursday. My mom is there, and since my oldest turned 21 last month, I'm taking her down as her b-day present. Now hopefully the storm will stay far enough out to sea that my plane can take off !!

WOW It's January 2 and there are 8 pages already? You guys amaze me. I have several goals for the month, but the biggest 2 are working on this 5 week diabetes "in control" plan from a magazine I bought from the ADA and the other is to start working on cleaning and organizing.
The first week started yesterday and this week's goal is to eat a healthy breakfast 5/7 days. Two days and so far, so good.
My biggest hurdle is getting up! I tend to keep resetting my alarm until the last minute, then have no time to have a good breakfast and pack a lunch.
We survived being at -24 F (-31C) on NYday. Now it's "warming up" into the teens.
OK ladies I'm hosting my sanon group here tonight because the church is closed. Off to get ready. Take care, Meg from the freezer.6 -

I also have low blood sugar and I've found what works best for me is this:
10:30-11:00 am - small crackers & cheese (100 calories)
12:30 am - banana
2:00 pm - light lunch
3:30 pm - yogurt
4:45 pm - fruit
6:00 pm - 100 grams of cottage cheese, cucumber & radish slices (mixed into the cottage cheese) and sometimes also a few whole grain rye crackers with margarine
7:30-8:00 pm - dinner
9:30 pm - first snack
11:00 pm - second snack
1 am - off to bed! Which I really should be doing now since it is 1:24 am. Oops!

Pip ~ When you used to have your food diary open, I peeked and it looked like you ate very few calories compared with all the calories you burned. I can see why you would not gain. Envy your perseverance!
Rye ~ So sorry you are having to walk to work in this cold. It was 13* here in my part of GA today and we are just not equipped to handle that. Hope your pipes do not freeze. That made me realize we need to call our renter and tell her to drip the faucets.
Lisa ~ I understood what you meant when you said everything had reached the point that y'all could be your true selves.
Dr. Kay ~ On my way home from spending the NY's day with my BnL & SnL, I realized that my Snl's older sister lives in Jefferson.
One thing that I am happy about today is this ~ I deliberately did not weigh during the Christmas Season and found out that I had not gained any weight. I understand that I should aim to lose 25 lbs but my goal is just not to get any bigger.

Oh Penny! Ouch!! I hope you heal quickly!
Allie, hugs to you, you've got a lot on your plate right now! I hope all goes well.
I sincerely hope all of you ladies in the states and in Canada that are so cold are managing to keep warm! I consider myself so lucky to live in a more temperate region! Yes, we get cold but usually not more than -5C, and that for only brief periods so really not so bad. Our winters consist mainly of rain and I'm okay with that!
My plan for the New Year is going well so far, I brushed my teeth right after dinner last night, so no after dinner grazing for me! I have been sort of watching for a few days now, and tomorrow will be one week since I stepped on the scale, so we will see how that goes. Went to the gym this morning too. So far, so good!
Hope everyone has a great day!

Wendy and Machka, I was going to say the same thing about the notifications. I don’t get them either.
Carol, interesting! I live on the Athens side of Jefferson. Do you know where she lives? You and I need to try to do a meet-up sometime, especially if I’ve got to do a trip to Cobb Co anyway.
We had a very nice day. I went to the gym and did a killer upper body workout, then Dave and I went out to lunch at a neat little sandwich shop then to the mall to walk for an hour, then shopping for him some jeans and slippers. We picked up Chinese for supper. Now I’m in my recliner with the fire going.
Life is good. (Picture is from before Christmas, but you get the idea.)

Happy New Year! Barbie: thanks for this thread! I’m sympathetic about frightened dogs. Mine trembles uncontrollably with thunder, gun shots, and fireworks.
My husband has taken a few days off and is enjoying the comfort foods with our sudden extreme weather, (we are used to if you don’t like the weather in nc today just wait until tomorrow). I was proud I got my outside mile in at noon as well as an inside one this am. I just looked like the abominable snowman!3 -
I'm freezing ... in the 20's overnight, did not warm up much today either ... back in the 20's tonight; but one thing for sure ... we'll be dripping our faucets. Woke up this morning to no water; but, at least none of them froze and broke. Sprinkler running today, so we will have lot of ice out there in the morning. I won't be surprised if the water freezes mid-stream, if Niagara Falls can freeze over with all the water flying over it.
I get all sorts of written and pronunciations of my name. Elenor, Eleanora, Lenore, Leonora, Elenora, ... the lists goes on. "Lenora" pronounced "Lee Nora"; more emphasis on the Nora ... not "LEE Nora" more like "La Nora". But, to all medical offices and hospitals, I will be "Nancy" ... not thrilled when I get called that - thankfully my GP and GYN call me "Lenora" ... my other 2 MDs, PsycheMDs and NeuroMD usually call me "Lenora", even though it is just posted as my "Preferred name to be called by". Have to use legal name for Medicare and secondary insurance forms.
Working at getting everything to PsycheMD so he can make the choice of what I will be doing; now that my 'seizure medications' have been adjusted. They upped my Dilantin by 100mg (so 300mg all at night); they cut my Lamictal by 1/2 ... (now taking 150mg twice a day and before hospitalization was taking 300mg twice a day). Neurologist, when contacted about the change by K-Mart told the pharmacist that 'no, he did not want the dosages to change'. Now, PsycheMD is waiting for the lab work results to come in and decide if he wants the dosages to stay at the lower amount or if he agrees that they should go back to pre-hospitalization. If that is the case, I will run out of the 'seizure Rxs' before I see any of my doctors. I have 4 MDs who treat 4 overlapping body parts; but, not for the same reason. I have signed a medical authorization for the GP/GYN office to send PsycheMD the lab results and any other medical records they deem necessary. My GP wrote the last Dilantin Rx because the NeuroMD is only in town every other week and I was going to run out; but, he wrote it for the same dosage I had been taking. I am not sure how I like NeuroMD, he is a little strange; but, the last time I saw him (June of 2017) he spent a lot more time with me than he ever had. Twice this last week I felt the 'sinking' feeling as if I was about to have a 'seizure'; but, didn't. I don't like that feeling at all. PsycheMD who treated me while in the hospital said she was trying to get me "Therapeutic" so that my moods would not 'spike' up and down, but more like wave. I don't like the depression side of things and have told my regular PsycheMD that I prefer to be one step towards the manic side of the fence, than sitting on it. I have never been 'therapeutic' on any medication I take. One reason I was 'Lithium Toxic' 10 years ago and almost died ... PsycheMD was trying to keep me 'therapeutic' on it and while ones body produces a little bit of Lithium, my was over-producing it (along with the intake of Lithium). I almost died ... had seizures non-stop for days on end. The kidney MD told Louis that 'if' they did not 'flush' my kidneys I was going to die. Louis told him, 'well if you think she'll die without you doing it, then 'flush' them. They did and I stayed in the ICU for 3 weeks, then I got 'checked out' (on paper) from the medical floor and then 'readmitted' (on paper) to the Psyche unit. That is when I got the first of 2 Psyche MDs from Hell and then ended up in a 'state-run institution' for the criminally insane. When I got there and assigned to a PsycheMD there ... he told me that on the dosage of Seroquel they had me on, that I would have 'never' gotten stable and jacked it up from 100mg to 800mg a day. Within 2 days I was well on my way to being stable. He is actually the person who told me that I 'needed' to file a complaint against the one that sent me there in the first place. He was appalled. My present PsycheMD was also appalled. He told met that if he wasn't able to get me stable ... he would send me to the Medical College of GA, in Augusta or he would send me to Emory in Atlanta. My records were incomplete and inaccurate when I got sent off and they were going to give me insulin, that I refused, although I am NOT diabetic. The only reason they gave me the insulin had something to do with my getting my kidneys flushed ... I was not even 'on' it when they transferred me to the Psyche ward.
I trust my own PsycheMD - I travel 2 hours to go see him 4x a years. I trust my GP (young, sweet, and very informative). My GYN has treated me for the longest period of time in my entire life. I would trust him for anything. He saved my life after having a Hydatidiformole pregnancy back when I was 24. Back then, they did not have all the 'state of the art' equipment that do the 3- and 4-D images. Even then, he has only had 2 patients with the same issue since I had mine 43 years ago. It isn't something that occurs very often. He told me that it occurs in 1:2000 pregnancies when naturally conceived twins occur 1:89. I had to take chemo for 9 weeks because it (placenta) had broken off and gotten into my blood stream and was attaching to other organs (kidneys, lungs, and one other). It could have ended up being cancerous ... if they had not caught it when they did. I was in my 5th month of my pregnancy ... getting bigger than a single pregnancy would have been, but not feeling any movement or getting a heartbeat.
So, you can see that I occasionally have some major trust issues.
I feel comfortable here where I know I have friends. So many of you were concerned about what was going on while I was in the hospital and I got so many cards from you. They have really meant a lot to me. I have them in a stack and I re-read them when I am feeling 'alone'. I will probably still 'lurk' and then when I do post, it is going to be long. I'm learning how to look at life "10 Seconds at a Time" and realizing what "The Serenity Prayer" means.
Well, I'm going to get off for the night! Love y'all! Welcome to all the "Newbies". For those dealing with trageties - I offer my condolences. For thoses making their goals. Congrats. For those 'falling off the wagaon' ... it will get better and 'you can do it'. For any other thing ... know that I have you in my thoughts and prayers.
Love ya!

Oh, I forgot. Do any of you have granddaughters that have and play with Barbie dolls? I found 22 outfits that my Mother made me when I had one 50+ years ago. I will be willing to sell them if anybody wants them. I'm thinking of about $65 (but that is negotiable).

If y'all are talking about getting notifications on your cellphones you can turn them off. Go to setting and there will be a setting for notifications and you will just go down the list and turn off the ones you don't want to get notifications from. I did this once for MFP and just did the same for Facebook ... I don't even remember getting it on my cellphone and I deleted the icon by holding my finger on it until it asked what I wanted to do with it. Hope that helps.1

No, I'm not talking about notifications on my mobile phone. I turned those off ages ago. I'm talking about notifications here within MFP's desktop/laptop version.
I have bookmarked the three challenge sites I use, and I've got a constant stream of notifications coming up from them.

Rori - NYKaren - Barbie - Judefit - I reviewed my 2017 food expenses. What a shocker to see how much we were spending on junk food and alcohol and food items that were spur of the moment. I try to shop the grocery sales but tend to go overboard and things get lost in the freezer. I think planning to reduce food spending by 10% is a good idea, along with eating out of that freezer!
I watched a documentary on FMTV this weekend about a couple decided to live off food stamp equivalent for a week. In their area, they would have qualified for $50 ($25 ea). They had a shopping list and stuck to it. It was hard and they were hungry by the end of the week and could no longer afford the variety of fruits and vegetables they loved - altho they did buy carrots and lettuce for salads as I recall. They even went dumpster diving for bread.
What I didn't realize was in some inner city areas, there aren't grocery stores which sell fresh quality fruits and vegetables or which aren't terribly expensive, so folks don't have much choice other than fast food places and convenience stores with processed foods and canned goods. It's often case of ramen noodles vs. a head of lettuce and a couple apples, so the ramen wins.
I lived like that for almost 2 years in the early days of my first marriage. Our income was well below the poverty line, and I usually had anywhere from $12-$24 for groceries each week. Fortunately we lived near my husband's parents, and we'd go there for Sunday dinner most Sundays and they'd give us a package of left overs to take home so that gave us at least 2 meals each week.
I was able to get flats of 36 pullet eggs (the really small ones) for a couple dollars, we'd buy day-old bread, bulk bags of plain pasta or rice when we could afford them, and the cheapest bologna we could find ... and that's what we had the rest of the week. I went to bed with gnawing hunger pains each night, and woke with them in the morning. I just got used to being hungry almost all the time.
People talk about craving chocolate and chips and things ... during that time, I craved fruit and cheese. But of course I couldn't afford any of it.
That is a time period I have no desire to return to!! It was horrible.
Since then, I have tended to be a bit of a food hoarder. I keep things like cake mixes and tins of fruit in the cupboard with no real intention of eating them ... I just like having them there, just in case. And it was years before I could touch an egg again!
But as for grocery shopping now, we've got it down so it's all pretty quick and efficient. We buy the same things each week ... except at Christmas.
When I first started with MFP I make several trips to the grocery stores and markets in my area simply to browse the shelves and see what they had available ... mainly looking for tasty, low-calorie food. And I discovered a reasonable selection, so those are the items we go for each week.

No ... I always eat my exercise calories. That's fuel! And MFP is set up so that you're supposed to eat at least some of your exercise calories.
If I exercise just a little bit ... like, say, an hour's walk ... I'll eat about 50% of my exercise calories back.
If I exercise a moderate amount ... maybe a 3-hour bicycle ride, or an hour on the treadmill + 30 min rowing or something ... I might eat as much as 75% of my exercise calories back.
If I exercise a lot ... like cycling 6+ hours ... I eat about 95% of my exercise calories back.
When I was doing long rides, I tried to limit my intake to 50% for a while, and found I was a mess two days after. So I'd cycle a century (100 miles) in 8 hours on the Saturday, on Sunday I was OK but I would get some extra sleep and wasn't too active, but then on Monday I would go into the low blood sugar shakes, irritability, confusion, etc. all day long. So I had to up my intake to about 95% for those kind of rides, and I still lost weight quite quickly.
Running is a new thing for me and I'll have to figure out where it falls in the categories above. When I finish a 45 minute run, which is a pretty short workout time, I feel like I've done about a 4 or 5 hour bicycle ride. So I'll have to see what replenishment percentage works.

So when you're on your desktop/laptop, and you scroll up to the top of the page and look to the right, you see the little grey bell, star and setting gear ... right?
Is there a number beside your little grey bell?
When you click the little grey bell and select "All notifications", do you get multiple pages of them?

I just don't know how to fit it all into any fewer hours.
When I complain that I can't seem to get around to working on my home office, I mean that it would require an hour's less sleep than I already get ... or a 25th hour added to my day.
The only way I do accomplish things is to break them into about 15 minute tasks ... I can squeeze 15 min of cupboard organising, or putting away the laundry, or tackling another aspect of the cycling clubs I'm involved with into my day here and there. But I have a lot of trouble devoting an hour to anything.

Volunteered at the Green Room, then went to the local library to put rack cards from the Newcomers there, then to Aldi. Home now, dinner ready and here
Vicki - Congratulations!!
Penny - gorgeous pics! You are so lucky
janetr - I don't like hard cooked egg yolks. Now soft cooked, no problem. I just don't like them hard cooked. I'm quite convinced that it's more of a texture thing than anything else.
Rye - I'm planning to go to the deep water class tomorrow. My way of thinking is that I'm probably burning a lot of calories just keeping myself warm. Well, that's what I'd prefer to think. Thanks for your feeling about the air fryer. I've been skeptical of them, now you've confirmed it for me.
KJ - I must say that your dd her hubby better watch out, when Joaquin gets older he's going to be a real heart breaker.
Wendy - you sound like me. It seems that every day I have to get out of the house, even if it's just to go to Lowe's Hardware. Vince constantly talks about how I'm always on the go. He's just the complete opposite, he's a homebody. Like today if I'd gotten home from Aldi's soon enough, I was thinking that I'd go to mahjongg. But that didn't happen
Joyce - Yea for no more boot
With this weather change, my sinuses have really been acting up. So I've been taking a decongestant. The only problem is that I can't sleep and I alternate between being hot and cold. Looks like I probably should take another decongestant.
