And why is Diet Coke unhealthy?
In my opinion it is a unhealthy drink to consume on a regular basis. It doesn’t contain anything your body needs nutritionally and can have some negative side effects if dank in excess. At least with my personality if I start drinking a lot of diet pop or keep a case of it in the house I end up drinking way too much and not enough water so I choose to avoid it for the most part. I still do have an occasional diet pop here and there but that is where I leave it.
You can also argue this study vs that study etc but at the end of the day if it doesn't provide your body with something you need you probably should limit it at the least or avoid it all together.
Drink plenty of water each day instead. This is just my opinion of course each person needs to make their own determination as to how far they want to take their nutrition.
I don't drink any water except in my diet coke/tea/coffee
Your body needs hydration, it is personal preference how you do that.
All of them drinks are Diuretics and would also not be healthy for your kidneys and maybe liver. Your body does needs water each day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I don’t think many nutritionists would disagree with the importance of water daily.
I wouldn't listen to any nutritionist, they don't know what they are talking about. A dietitian on the other hand will tell you that hydration is important. They understand that water comes in many forms, including foods.
If it works for you great but for me personally never drinking water and always drinking diet pop/coffee/tea is just not something I would recommend on a long term basis.
Pop, coffee and tea ARE water. Putting something extra in it DOES NOT CHANGE THAT THEY ARE WATER. A glass of water doesn't stop being water if you put a slice of lemon in it.19 -
For no particular reason I feel the need to link this thread in here.

I understad that it contains water etc however are any of you advocating never drinking water and only drinking diet pop or in the least are you advocating this is a good idea? As stated before I do have an occasonal diet pop however it is not my main source of hydration. I’ll talk to my doctor about it (I see a functional doctor)!
You guys have possibly made me look at this in a slightly different light however I still feel like you should drink plain water as well. Just my opinion based on my experiences throughout the years, I feel better drinking more water than not.13 -
No. Nobody is advocating drinking just soda/pop/whatever (generic) you call it.
Just that it isn't "bad" unless one has a particular physical problem with it. And that those who say it doesn't have anything your body needs are demonstrably incorrect (water for hydration and sodium - possibly other electrolytes).7 -

I personally drink mostly water. One coffee in the morning, then usually water the rest of the day. I probably only have a diet soda twice a month or so.
However, if someone is able to meet their goals drinking Diet Coke and not water, it's not going to hurt them (unless aspertame causes headaches for them).
It's the fear-mongering of diet soda (or any other single food) that needs to be abolished. That's my goal.17 -

Nobody said that...why would you jump to that extreme conclusion?
I drink a lot of coffee, and tea, but I still manage to drink at least 10 cups or more of water - usually with a little flavoring added (i.e., I use a packet meant to flavor 16 oz of water to flavor 36 or more ounces...).9 -
Coffee black with some cinnamon for flavor. Sugar and cream will be converted into fat. No pop at all. Diet pop is actually worse than regular pop because of the fake sugars your body doesn’t know how to break it down so it can actually make u gain weight.61

Nope, not true. That is a myth that's been debunked.
What usually happens with people who gain weight while drinking diet soda - is the same thing that happens to people who gain weight while going to the gym - they think drinking diet soda (or working out 20 mins on the treadmill) cancels out that burger or pizza they just ate that put them over their actual calorie limit for the day....21 -

Holy Bro, Batman!
Sugar and cream will not be converted into fat, if not in a Caloric surplus. Sugar, especially.
Artificial sweeteners: if your body doesn't know how to break it down, it can't possibly make you gain weight. They'll just pass right through you. Of course, that's not what happens. And they won't make you gain weight.24 -

QFT
In a typical day, I drink one cup of coffee with 1/4 cup of 2% milk (30 cals), one cup of tea with a little squeeze of honey (maybe 10 cals worth), one can of diet soda, and several glasses of water.
If you are cutting them out because you need to limit your caffeine, there is more caffeine in the coffee so more bang for your buck if you quit it. If you are trying to lose weight, the coffee is the only one that is possibly affecting your weight so either cut that out or find a lower cal way to enjoy it. If you are trying to punish yourself, or alternately become more virtuous, I would humbly suggest that food & drink are not a great way to do that :drinker:6 -

Are you trying to say that if I eat at maintenance calories but some of those calories were sugar and cream I would put on fat?
And a zero calorie sweetener can put weight on me?

Ditch the diet soda because of the artificial sweeteners. Sodas in general are crap foods and coffee isn’t nearly as bad. If it’s a vice/treat for you, maybe wean off to move to seltzer water with a squeeze of lemon or lime or some other fresh fruit. I did that to drop soda and I don’t miss soda at all. I couldn’t care less to drink it again.
If you change what you put in your coffee, you don’t need to give it up. You can use whole milk, coconut or some other nut milk as creamer and maybe use 1-2 drops of liquid organic stevia to sweeten. (Organic liquid stevia can be bitter bc it’s not a processed sugar, it won’t sweeten like a Splenda, etc). Over time you can change your ratio to move towards black coffee.37 -

Everything in your post is 100% wrong, but please do feel free to explain, in physiological terms, how a zero calorie substance can make you gain weight.
(Hint: It can't)24 -

We have. Can you please point us to your sources from this information so we can learn? Because what you are saying disagrees with all the actual scientific evidence I have ever seen. Thanks!
And did you look at the aspartame thread link that was posted several times?17
