I admit to being kind to spiders, always taking the relocation option when possible. But I hope to never become so familiar with them that I can identify them as babies, teenagers and adults!
That is something I find amazing.
I am kind of guessing based on size. The newborns are tiny dots you'd hardly even recognise as anything alive. They're easy to overlook. Then they get slightly bigger and you can identify the little legs and see them crawling up and down the wall, but you'd probably still think "what on earth is that?" ... I'm guessing that's the toddler phase. The little ones in my bedroom were slightly larger than that when I first noticed them, and identifiable as a "tiny spider" ... probably at the age they're about ready to start school.
Then they seem to grow remarkably quickly! The "teenagers" were about 1/3 the size of the mom. Dad is likely smaller, but mom was huge ... one of the biggest pholcus phalangioides I've seen. Her body was a decent size but from the tip of one leg to the tip of the next on the other side was getting on for 4 inches. Dad may have been the carcass on the floor which I vacuumed up. I'm not sure if mom eats dad or not.
Some people want to get rid of all the spiders, but a lot of people (like me) like to keep these around because they help to keep other pests down. So we've got a pholcus phalangioides in each room and I really don't mind them ... I just don't want an entire family in my bedroom where I'm sleeping, and specifically ... not on the bed!!
M in Oz
Oh see I know those spiders!! The body isn't really intimidating. We used to have a bit of a ecosystem going at our home in Vacaville CA. We had the gecko lizards that lived in the wall of our garage, and sunroom. The boys sleeping room had one spider in the upper corner of their closet, and one spider below their sink by a corner baseboard. His name was Bob. I kept track of every bug, sometimes their webs would get big enough where I yelled *Really??? " and would knock them down to a more manageable size. The pest control companies would knock on my door asking if they needed our service and I would tell them Mother Nature's got it covered! If I sprayed, I would've pissed off one layer or another! My son found a baby gecko lizard in their shower which he gently removed.
Becca
We have the little lizards too. Last year, one lost its tail, but each day a bit of it grew until it was all back again.

Heather - there are such neat Burns Night traditions
Got a lot of the ornaments off 2 of the trees. Actually, the one small tree is already boxed up. How sad!
While making the spreadsheet of the DVD's that I own, I came across a couple that I have two copies of. If anyone wants one, let me know (PM me) and you can have it. One of them is Stephanie Vitorino's Body Target, Ultimate Weight Training Cardio workout with Terry Simpson, Gay Gasper Cardio Metabolic Interval (this one is for the rebounder -- mini trampoline), and Strong Body Ageless Body.
I also have Kathy Smith's Lift Weights to Lose Weights. For this one, I only ask for the cost of the postage which is usually less than $3.
One other thing that I have is a CD called "Fit in Six" for the Wii. I don't have the WiiU (or whatever it's called). There are multiple workouts on this CD, all different lengths of time covering cardio, balance, upper body strength, lower body strength, core strength and flexibility. This one I'd just give to someone.
Let me know if anyone is interested.

Rye, I don’t mind shoveling snow if it’s not too cold but this morning was too much cold. We have a big scoop shovel that we use that you just push along the ground then dump to the side. Sure saves your back by not lifting the snow. Then we just use a regular shovel for the steps.
Let maintenance at work know about the heat not being on and they came right and fixed it. No time at all and I was toasty warm . Usually I’m fine and tend to be on the warmer side so it’s not a problem.
-5 tonight and Sunday they are saying-15! I’m not leaving the house this weekend. Have to take the tree down any way.
Finished the bracelet I was making for my cousin’s wife . I’ll get it out to him next week. The jump rings I ordered to make myself something out of a new pattern is supposed to be here tomorrow. Tomorrow afternoon I’ll have to drive down the driveway and check the mail. Making it would be a good way to spend part of the weekend.
DH is finally feeling better. He rarely gets sick so it’s hard to see him that way .
Almost back to my pre holidays weight so I’m pretty excited about. Eating went well this week so I’m back in control again.
Time for reading.

M - boy, there's a lot of foods that doesn't sit well with you. What about those jello cups? They have the vanilla pudding in the individual servings.
Yeah ... I spent years wondering why I felt so bad, but food allergies and intolerances were never considered until finally when I was in my early 20s a doctor sent me to an allergist and I went through a bunch of testing, including the elimination diet (lost 20 lbs on that!), but I finally had a list of intolerances: milk, peanuts & peas, tree nuts, soy, citrus fruit, strawberries, and peppers. I also had two allergies: tobacco, especially in the form of cigarette smoke, and canola, especially the flower. More recently we've added dust mites to the list.
With the intolerance ones, I can eat a bit ... but then all of a sudden, that's it, no more. For example, I love pineapple, and this week I went a bit overboard with it. I ate a whole pineapple over 4 days. Now I've got a rash all around my mouth. I should have known better!!
With the peanuts one, my mother gave us all a bowl of peanuts each Sunday after church. She always did up a big steak dinner on Sundays, and it took some time to prepare, so the bowl of peanuts was meant to keep us from bothering her with "when's dinner". Every Sunday, almost immediately after dinner (1-2 hours after eating the peanuts), I would be in such abdominal agony ... just doubled over in pain. My mother was a nurse, so she had me checked for crohn's disease and all sorts, but nothing ever came of it. As I got older, they started to assume IBS or something. As an adult, I continued the tradition of a bowl of peanuts on Sundays too. Then, as I mentioned, I went for the allergy testing ... and stopped eating peanuts, peanut butter, and peas ... and all was well!!
The one problem is that I have trouble meeting my protein requirements. I'm not fond of meat/seafood and I have to be so careful with peanuts, nuts, and dairy. That doesn't leave much in the way of protein ... so I am consistently under.
I almost wonder, sometimes, if the allergy isn't to these foods themselves, but to protein in general.Machka, have you tried lactaid treated milk? I have some lactose intolerance and can't use regular milk much at all, but I found, and use, the lactaid treated stuff quite successfully. That won't help with gallbladder issues or nut allergies, but it might help you have cereal again.
I don't eat cereal much anyway ... too high in calories! But if I do want some, I go with almond milk. I've tried a bunch of different ones, but like the low calorie content and flavour of almond milk. It is related to tree nuts, of course, but I seem to be able to handle the small quantities I use all right.
BTW - speaking of cereal, it was one of the "logging shocks" for me. I was surprised by how many calories were in nuts, pears, mangoes, and cereal. A serving of cereal is 45 grams, which for me is a dusting on the bottom of the bowl. If I eat cereal, I eat somewhere up around 5 or 6 servings in one go! So I don't eat it very often.

We do all the ritual of "piping in the haggis" with some bagpipe music and reciting the "Ode to the Haggis" and plunging the dagger into it. We all wear stupid tartan hats (Wee Jimmy hats with ginger hair)and have a tartan runner on the table etc. None of us are Scottish! My brother and his wife are coming and DH's cricket friend and his wife. It is traditional to toast the haggis with whisky, of which we have a choice of eight, but my brother and his wife are on a Dry January!!! Oh well, we will still have a great time. I hope we will play my new 5 Second Rule game.
The day after I am up to London for the SingalongaSoundofMusic. So I mustn't have too much whisky!

Kim: I am so glad to see you posting!
Sharon in Lethbridge: Larry's cousin June sounds like a courageous and admirable woman. I hope things go well for her.
Lisa in NC: The East Coast is having some crazy winter weather this year. I never imagined snow in Florida and my guess is that the residents didn't either. :noway: Stay warm and safe. :flowerforyou:
(((Heather))) Revisiting the past is not easy. I am so impressed with your courage to do so. You've turned yourself into a remarkable woman. :flowerforyou:
Michelle: I am so grateful the health club keeps the locker combinations list! How would I have gotten my car keys to go home? I keep my yoga mat there when I'm gone & I leave my purse there when I'm working out. :flowerforyou:
loumoon5: We're planning a visit to our daughter in Illinois in just a few weeks. I hope things will have eased by then, but if it is still the arctic when we are there, do you have any advice about clothes and staying warm?
Kelly: I've had great success with MFP by simply following their plan. I entered all my starting information and they set my calorie allowance. As I lost weight they lowered my allowed calories. I decide what to eat within those calories and measure my portions so I'm eating the number of calories that I think I'm eating. Easy, though it takes discipline.
Becca: I like the business card idea for numbers that I need to remember. Thanks! It won't work at the gym though, because my business card would be inside my purse in the locker. I did put in on my cell phone. I keep the phone with me to record calories I burn at the gym.
Kim: This is brilliant! "I heard a podcast from a food program about resolutions, and they twisted it to which food would you eat MORE of in 2018 and why. This appealed to me, and listening to the things they came up with was interesting. I almost never make resolutions, but I found myself thinking about this and came up with one of my own, So in 2018 my goal is to eat more from the grocery store, and the garden – similar to other goals of mine, but with a more positive twist… so less low end restaurant junk, and make the occasional restaurant meal more special." :flowerforyou:
Talking about funeral planning, we are partially there. We've decided to be cremated when we each pass on & eventually have our ashes mixed together and scattered from the spot on the Oregon Coast where we were married. DH made this plan and I think it is sweet and romantic. He wants to be shot off in fireworks, but I'm not enthused with the prospect of setting the cliff on fire. :noway: Scattering is good enough for me. I don't have to worry about that part. Our kids will be smart enough not to set the cliff on fire.

Kelly and Sue, I really enjoyed meeting you and the lovely brunch. Joaquin is adorable and so sweet to hold and listen to his chatter.
Sue, I did notice that you were not behind me. I did miss a turn and had to back track a bit. Glad you found your way.
Kelly, glad you made it home ok. I was thinking of you when the news was reporting on the delayed and cancelled flights due to all the snow.
Today the weather was great sunny and in the low 60’s. This afternoon I picked up the grand kids and took them to a local park with a great playground. Afterwards, we stopped for gelato. Grandson said it was better than ice cream and he wanted another serving. I actually told him no, but said we would come back soon.

Feeling for the folks who are suffering thru the deep freeze! Sure happy that I'm not one of them! I just have rain to deal with, and really I'm okay with that. Tracked today, 34 calories over, but I'm okay with that too. I don't track the walking that I do at work and I can put some miles on some days, so hopefully it will work out. I've not been peeking at the scale, and will wait until Wed to see how I've done. I'm hoping that only weighing myself once a week will make me pay more attention to what goes in my mouth. So far, it's been working...
M, Robbie Burns was a Scottish poet, you'd have to Google him to find out more accurate info than I could give you! Burns night is celebrated here in Canada too, or at least in my corner of it, perhaps because we have a large Scottish contingent living here.
Well, tablet is about to die so I'm going to pack it up for tonight. Hope everyone has a great day/night!

Yeah, I don't like "resolutions" that involve NOT doing things.
That's why I prefer to look at the year ahead with a collection of goals ... things I want to do, things I will do, things I can work toward doing, things I can accomplish. For me, my chances of success increase monumentally when I'm working toward things I want to do.

Hi Ya'all, I'm deep in the heart of darkness, searching for a missing explorer in the Amazon jungle. In between chapters, I have finished putting the Christmas decorations away, cleaned out the freezer to defrost it, gone through my clothes closet and tossed out four large bags to take to goodwill. Now I am going to start cleaning and organizing my craft room. I hurry through my chores so I can get back to the jungle! Wendy6

Really weird day out there. It's +30C but looks like it is going to storm any minute.
And very gusty wind. It's as calm as can be right now, but about 2 minutes ago, it was blowing a gale. And probably will blow a gale again in a minute. Oh, there it goes ... windy again.
Plus the sky is so threatening and has been all day. Just not sure about going for a ride yet. I've been for a short walk to get some stuff from the grocery store and need to clean my kitchen and get dinner and dessert ready, so I'll do that next ... and then maybe things will have settled and I can go for a ride.
A helicopter went over and there's the faint smell of smoke in the air. Two bad signs right now. Ah, just checked Facebook ... and there's a fire just south of us. Not far away.

My new Year resolution was out the window by the 2nd being a dry January, but I enjoyed the day and have been alcohol free since then. Since having a back injury in September 17 not been able to go to the gym and even walking was hard so quite pleased last night when I achieved my 10,000 steps. I am not dieting even though I need to lose 14lbs which I gained in the latter part of the year mainly through comfort eating over the pain in my back and minor family issues. I would say I am eating more mindfully now. I am weighing in on Monday and then hopefully by making good choices will be back to where I left off. Have a good day ladies :-)8

Heather - the photo must have brought up such feelings for you! Take care of yourself. Writing your memoir will hopefully give even more power back to you. I cried for that little girl.
Betsy - This is my 2nd marriage and if we can't work it out I can't see there being a third.
Machka - I have heard of people being allergic to protein. It is rare. You seem to have a good handle on your food sensitivities/allergies. It is frustrating having to limit your food choices but you have done it well
Nasty note left on my desk about something I had already dealt with. Oh well, so nice to find at 6 a.m. I am so looking forward to the day that I don't have to be there. On the other hand I worked with really good people this morning. I still have some year end filing that needs to be caught up now that Season is over. Inventory is on the 10th and then it will slow down so much that we will all be dragging. Hard to go from 150 to 0.
It will be a time of cleaning and adjustment.
Niece came over to help me with Project Kitchen Organization. I thought we had it all done and then realized that we had missed 2 cupboards. Oh well, I don't often use the stuff in them so that is okay. It really looks good. Now for the next room.
Larry took Greysyn out skidooing today. First time for Greysyn. Snow is getting too soft to go again. They had a good time.
I haven't asked Larry what his name is when he is being mean. I try not to engage although sometimes I just can't help myself. Jack was weird and seemed to appear when there was rye involved. It is never in our house unless a guest brings it. I banned it years ago.
We had a decent day and evening. I say the Serenity prayer often.
Fell asleep too early and am now up way too late. At least I don't have to be at work until 8.
Thinking of taking Keira to a movie. She is taking her sewing lessons and homework from my sister very seriously. I may have to buy her some fabric and I'm wondering how long the little sewing machine is going to serve her needs. A definite hit for a Christmas present. Yes, that sound is me patting myself on the back.
Stay warm

Machka - if you Google Burns Night you will get a million hits. Evelyn is right, it's in memory of Robert Burns, the Scottish national poet. He wrote the Address to the Haggis.
Karen - McSweens (no other tradtional haggis comes close) also make a very acceptable vegetarian haggis. My DDIL used to have that when I invited her over.
My lower back is sore as is my right foot. I have lost no weight despite the added exercise. Grrrrrrrrrr! I will have to eat less.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx3 -
Morning, afternoon and evening, my friends...
Katla: My experience here with the weather could be worse - my best friend is in Orlando with family for a once in a lifetime theme park - a- palooza with two of their three kids, their spouses and two grands. They live in Montana, and were so pleased at the idea of a lovely warm vacation. Hasn't turned out that way for most of it. Plus, I got a text from her last night saying that five of them were down with colds, including both grands. My life's pretty good in comparison!
Kim: It's always lovely to see your smile, even when you don't post.
Heather: Our blessing, and our curse, as writers, is living in the moment we write about. It was much, MUCH easier to distance myself from it by fictionalizing my father's abuse in my novel. Especially since I killed him off in the first chapter. Not suggesting you should, just giving you my own experience. I was terrified that my family wouldn't just get crazy, but might even sue. The few that read it (if they weren't fibbing) said "great book!" The rest, including those who might have had a basis for a libel suit, never said anything at all... Not sure my family reads anything but the Bible.
Trying not to get too het up, as part of my daughter's battalion is deploying overseas pretty shortly. Her first sergeant is trying to keep her off the list, as he's not going until later in the year, and wants her with him (she's amazing at her job). But for her, it would mean fewer months apart from the husband, as he's due back in May and she would be back in July. If she deploys in April or May, of course, it would mean a year apart from her spouse, if not more.
We're here for just this reason, of course, but it's still tough to think about the full responsibility for these two little lives (and two dogs and their cat) in our hands. Plus, I'd just as soon my daughter not be in a war zone, of course. I've got to remind her to get a medical power of attorney specially drawn up. Her general power of attorney for me was not accepted by the clinic when I went to get Tyler his physical, even though it covers "everything." They wanted it to say "medical." There's always something, you know?
Trying not to worry - can't change the military's mind, as I well remember, and this, too, shall pass.
Love y'all,
Lisa in NC5 -

My lower back was sore after my first couple runs. Then it settled in. Also, if you are doing anything with weights, form is very important.
And I haven't lost weight either. I have been able to lose weight by adding exercise, but I have to add a whole lot of exercise ... a minimum of 90 minutes a day on a "rest" day and averaging about 3 hours a day in general. When I do that, I can only keep it up for about 5 months, and then I have to back off to rest.
Meanwhile ... the battery in my food scale died!!! How am I supposed to eat if I can't weigh my food???
It's not quite that bad yet, but I've got to get back to weighing everything soon, so I'll have to replace that battery soon.

Ol Allie is out on that one...now bowling I would do... that would be fun...working today... and then going to my dads to help hoe out and will bring alfie with he and a bunch of garbage bags7 -
Machka FOUR INCHES??? [shudder]
Lenore fitted sheets, laundromat owner taught me this method, but it's hard to describe.
Put one long end's corner over the back of a dining room or kitchen chair. Fold the other long end's corner over it.
Hold the opposite end corners and back away from the chair til the sheet is stretched out.
Fold the corner in your right had over the one in your left so the fold down the width of the sheet is on your right. Take the fold in your right hand and fold to meet the corners in your left and hold in your left. At the chair end, drape the fold over the corners on the chair. Sheet is now folded in quarters widthwise. Grab the fold at bottom edge with your right hand. Bring your left had toward the chair, hook/fold/pinch the stuff in your left hand over/with/to the stuff on the chair. Move your right hand to the stuff hanging down and grab it too. With your left pinch/take the corners etc off the chair. Move your hands together and you have something small and rectangular enough to finish folding on top of the dryer.
Barbie ". . .raised by depression era parents . . . mental shift to even start letting go of things. . . challenge to focus on what is mine to discard and not comment on what my darling husband has. . ." ditto everything you said. Some people get a feeling of freedom, release and an energy rise when they let stuff go. Not me, I feel diminished, sad, grief at loss. Every box that goes to the thrift store is a struggle. Absolutely HATE it when I've finally let something go, only to have a use for then next week. None the less, I need (if not want) to let go of some more things. Will channel today's Virgo Moon energy into sorting purging putting together at least one thrift store box. ;}

Heather - I belong to the Chicago Scots and we celebrate Burns night in March when the weather is a little more reasonable. We don't get 'true' haggis here in the states but it's pretty close. I had it in Scotland and I can't taste the difference.
Evelyn - The problem with the heat is a chronic issue. We've had the repairman out three times in the last month. My office is actually one of the warmest in the building, but the polar vortex is upstairs and the staircase is just outside my office door. I haven't resorted to wearing gloves at my desk, so maybe it's not so bad.
Ginger - You dress to shoes. Does that mean you are a fellow Flybaby?
Katla - I find that keeping my head and hands warm is the most important. I typically wear a balaclava to protect my face from the bitter cold wind. If you're spending time outdoors (more than just walking from the car to the house), wear layers and invest in thermal socks. Hoping for warmer weather soon.
Barbie - I'm with you on the letting go of things. I have an entire garage full of boxes of stuff I can't let go and it's been there since I moved it from my last house. I keep meaning to go through it but always find a reason not to. My lease is up at the end of summer so I'm hoping to tackle that so I don't have to move it again.
My approach to New Year's resolutions is the same as Lent. I was raised Catholic (and survived to tell the tale) and one of the Lenten traditions is to 'give something up' as a fasting sacrifice during the '40' days between Ash Wednesday and Easter. My pastor taught that giving something up for 6 weeks only to take it up again after Easter was missing the whole point of the exercise. If you're giving something up, it should be done with the intention of making a permanent change in your life. (Fasting from chocolate for six weeks isn't really life changing, and fasting from chocolate forever is unthinkable.) He also introduced the notion that fasting doesn't have to mean food. You could give up a bad habit, or conversely take on a good one. As I became an adult, it was this last thing that really resonated with me. My Lenten fasting sacrifice wasn't giving up sweets or cuss words. I vowed to do a good deed for my community - volunteering at a shelter or food pantry, tutoring ESL students or becoming an adult literacy advocate - and that community involvement was something that lasted far beyond the end of Lent. That said, my resolution this year is to commit to myself. As a parent, I've been so focused on my kids success that I've lost a little bit of what makes me me. To that end, I'm putting on my Flybaby wings and teaching myself to fly. It all starts with dressing to shoes and shining my sink.

Good morning! Happy Saturday! Well, I got half of my house undecorated and cleaned yesterday! I left the tree up, so that I could enjoy one more evening of "Christmas". I am off to the store to do the grocery shopping, then I will come home and get the living room undecorated and cleaned and the tree down. I will be making some tomato soup this week, along with some chicken noodle. DH has more dental work this week, so soft foods for him. I will probably be adding some shoveling to my work out today. There is about six inches on our driveway from last night.

Rye- You and I are alike in our love of soups and our love of shoveling! I bet you don't get to do a whole lot of shoveling in Texas. I could send you some snow, if you like!!
Cathy- OF COURSE, it hits 60 degrees the day after I leave Texas! Ugh! I am glad you got out to enjoy it! I remember taking my own kids for gelato once in a while as a treat. Knowing it was a european version of ice cream, made it more "special" to us.
Heather- Your Burns Night party sounds like fun! I had never heard of it, so I googled it. I had no idea he wrote Auld Lang Syne. The words to that song were always a mystery to me. Give the haggis a stab and raise a glass for me! Fun stuff!
With the song Auld Lang Syne going through my head, I just remembered; I watched the NYE ball drop on tv and was shocked that the New Yorkers were not singing Auld Lang Syne at the New Year! They were singing New York, New York. smh...a whole generation of celebrants will now think that the new year celebration is all about them. What's that all about?
Well, tempus fugit! And so should I...ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)4
