I heard a pod cast from a food program about resolutions, and they twisted it to which food would you eat MORE of in 2018 and why.
People who have been down south over Christmas/New Year's are coming back to Svalbard. One friend had been home to Germany with her husband and 3-year-old. The little boy was delighted to be there - getting spoiled rotten by doting grandparents - but he also missed home. As they prepared to board the flight up to Svalbard, she told her son to take a good long look at the sunlight, because he wasn't going to get to see any more for over a month.
He shook his head at her and said "Mommy I don't need the sun. I have a flashlight!"
My husband has been involved in the search for someone to fill an important position up here. On Wednesday, one candidate flew in for the second round of interviews, bringing his wife along so she could see what this place is like. (Important!) Yesterday it was time for them to leave. My husband was going to give them a ride to the airport. But the wife wanted to go "to the suburbs" to see a cabin she'd heard a lot about. (Incidentally, it's the cabin the flashlight boy's family lives in during the summer.) The cabin is right near the airport, so on the way to there, my husband took a little detour.
The gravel road out to the cabin runs along a gravelley plain about 500 yards wide, between the airport and the beach. The area is essentially featureless, so you have to know where the road goes - especially now, in the dark. My husband does, but unfortunately he skidded on an icy spot in a curve and went off the road. And hit the ONLY upright object within 500 yards: the sign that shows the way to the campground. Broken headlight, mangled fender, but no other damage to the car. (The signpost was totalled.)
The guests were a bit shaken, wondering what to do if a polar bear appeared, but just moments later, another car pulled up. Out jumped a guy who greeted my husband by name and started joshing him about his "aberration". He offered everyone a lift, they transferred the luggage, and tootled off to the airport. On the way, my husband and the other guy chatted about the Christmas holidays, as if there wasn't a problem in the world.
Later, taking a philosophical stance, my husband said the whole chain of events was a perfect illustration of how this town works. We help each other out. We don't overdramatize (except when telling stories to entertain each other). We just get on with it.
Whenever a problem crops up, we say "This is Svalbard. It'll resolve itself."

@Lagopus ... I find your life way, way up north fascinating, but I really don't know how you do it. A month without sunlight would have me curled up in bed weeping. I find it hard enough when the sun sets by 6 pm.
I know that come June you'll have daylight all the time ... that part I could do.

Today ended up being busier than I had hoped.
On the spur of the moment, I put together another slow cooker meal (had to make a dash down to the store to get light coconut milk) -- curried chicken and veg.
Then I finished and assembled the trifle which took longer than I had hoped, and I accidentally ended up with 2 of them!
And just before dinner, I dashed downstairs to ride 50 minutes on my bicycle trainer and then to do 10 minutes of weight lifting.

Hi ladies,
Just checking in. -10 (-23c) here this morning. Going to stay in bed a bit and read for a while before I get up.
Taking down the tree this morning so if my jump rings come in I can start my bracelet without feeling guilty about not getting anything done.
The muscle in my ankle still hurting even though I’m wearing my support and don’t go barefoot. I’m going to make yet again another appointment with the foot dr. He really hasn’t been much help so far so I’m only going give him one more try. I think he is the only one in town but I’m going to check with my dr first to see if there is anyone else I could go to.
Hope everyone has or is having a good day.

Heather - I'm glad you found a photo for your book but sorry about all the feelings that came back. When did your dad's molestation finally stop for you? I had a girlfriend in high school who was obese. I'll never forget the day I was visiting her - and we were teenagers - we were in her room chatting, and she tearfully told me that her dad had been molesting her. I cannot remember the particulars - I think it started when she was a child. Anyhow, I recall walking out of her room and seeing her mom standing there in the kitchen and not liking her mom much anymore.
Thank you for the update on Ros - I hope this next round of chemo is successful for her and gives her a long and happy life! I think it's great DOS has found a girlfriend... meeting the family is a big step. Nice to think the greyhounds helped with the match-making, lol.
Barbara S Oregon - I just reread Elena's almond flour muffin recipe - all I have is almond meal which is pretty coarse and has flecks of brown in it. But I still may try it, perhaps it will be more like a bran muffin.
I know I have to start decluttering again. I think it will be easiest to start with extra bedding and pillows - many of them still in the plastic. And going after the pantry again. Our local gospel mission has a little food bank and will take items up to a year past the "best by" date.
By the way, I finally did splurge on a "My Pillow" and so far it's going pretty well.
Machka - Kim - I like the idea of focusing on eating MORE of certain foods vs. being only about restriction of some foods (like Little Debbies and Reese cups, lol.) Since I've upped my greens and fruit, I've noticed the cravings for processed food going away. Focusing my attention on what I'll put in my smoothie or what kind of salad I'll make helps take my mind off DH's chocolate stash. I know it will take training and vigilance.
My seed order arrived and now I'm getting ready to place another one - Park Seeds has mini kale meant for containers. DH won't like it, but I'm am thinking about tossing a LOT of flower seeds into some of my former veggie garden and letting them go crazy. I had such good luck with the wildflowers last year - I bet there will be a lot of self-seeding going on with those as well.
Speaking of, it's going to be a warmer, rainy day. I need to finish cleaning up the garden a bit between showers. Pull more carrots. I think DH is going to prune the apple trees.
Have a good day everyone!

Hi all,
I've just been looking at our BBC news online and seeing how bad the weather is in parts of the US. It is an eye opener to be sure! It is very cold here in South Wales UK but nowhere near as cold as some of you have it.
On a lighter note, can't remember which of you is/are the line dancers, but, I'm off to a line dancing social evening later and looking forward to it.
Take care all

NSV today. Realized I hadn’t worn plain jeans since at least Thanksgiving so I tried on a smaller pair when I got dressed. They were too big so I went down another size (the last size I have on hand). They fit and aren’t even snug. So, down two pant sizes in14

Machka, sure hope the fire doesn't affect you and that it gets put out quickly!2

M in Oz: We were plagued with fires last summer. The smoky air is horrid & I have great sympathy for your current situation. It may put a crimp in your training routine and biking for a while. Take good care of your lungs! :flowerforyou:
Michele: Thanks for the idea about keeping keys in the trunk of the car. Congrats on your victory on the scale and being out of the over weight range.
Lisa: I hope the deployment situation for your daughter's battalion works out in a way that won't keep her separated from her family for too long. A year away from your children would be awful for everyone. I once had a student who was living with her grandma while military mom was deployed. In her case, living with grandma was a blessing.
Allie: I'm glad that you had a good time with your boss and coworkers. Your life seems to be transforming into a happier one. Three cheers!
I'm in a situation with DD at the moment and need to try to work it out with her. We are visiting her and going on to visit DS, DDIL & the new baby. She wanted us to take an extra suitcase along so she could fill it with treasures she wants to share with the new baby. We were opposed to the idea of a checked bag. We've had very bad luck with checking a bag with airlines in the past. We've had them lose or mangle our baggage on the occasions that we've checked anything. I need to call her and work this out. I left her in tears last night and that is a horrible feeling.

Machka, those cherries look amazing! Makes me want some now! Unfortunately, even if I were able to find some here (doubtful!), they would cost WAY more than I would be willing to pay for them. I passed on a head of cauliflower a few days ago, it was $4.50 and TINY! Same cauliflower yesterday, $4. Still no bigger, but more reasonable.
Lanette, glad you are enjoying the My Pillow. I intensely dislike those commercials and love when I am watching something that I have PVR'd and can just fast forward thru them!
Rye, I work every Sat and Sun, it does impinge on my social life a bit, but it is what it is. I don't work just to get out of the house, this is a necessity, and this is when my boss needs someone, one does what one must. I really enjoy my job and my boss is awesome, so not complaining!
Penny, I think I might try your approach to adding more veggies and fruit in my diet. I will have to do it gradually, and your method sounds pretty good. I already do bring veggies and fruit to work with me, really need to incorporate that when I'm not at work. Great story about the accident! Glad damage was relatively minimal and no one was hurt. And of course it had to happen near the only stationary object for 500 yards, where else would it happen! lol
Well, I caved last night, got lazy and didn't brush my teeth right after dinner and ended up having a couple of chocolate oreo cookies. I did have only two, which considering there was a time not so long ago that I would eat at least four, I do consider that a bit of a victory. I still resisted the temptation to jump on the scale this morning, proud of myself for that. So calories were a bit more over than what I had already gone, but still under 200 over. I can live with that. Will just have to be extra vigilant today! Good lunch and snacks packed for work today, chili in the crockpot for dinner tonight, looking forward to that! Have been craving it for over a week now, a couple of co-workers got some from Timmies that day and it smelled SO good! I thought I had some in the freezer, but apparently not. Oh well, I will have now!

Penny - thank you for mentioning your carrot story. You started with one small thing... adding a carrot! Sometimes that's all it takes. Start small and keep branching out - in your case adding more veggies - is a great idea.
For most of my life, I'd jump in right in and expect perfection. Lose 2# a week right away and keep on losing until I made goal. Walking 10,000 steps a day even if it meant I was out pounding the pavement before bed. Eating no more than 1200 calories per day, even if it meant going to bed hungry after using up half those calories on candy bars!
Of course, I'd stumble from those lofty goals and feel defeated. I'd step on the scale once a week - focusing my happiness on which direction it went.
I am so grateful for this group and learning new ways of looking at weight loss and health. I don't feel I'm in a race anymore or a competition .... and it really doesn't take long to realize benefits of simply eating healthier and getting more exercise. I just had to start small and do it. It's true... every journey starts with the first step.
I too can't say enough about the benefits of living in a small town. Loved the story of your husband's adventure!

Morning Sisters, I also am much more likely to achieve a positive goal than a negative one so I have added food as one of my 2018 resolutions. I have six daily steps that I try to tick off first thing in the morning, most of them but one of those steps is to Eat Salad on days I'm not fasting. My salads are made of as many raw veggies as I can find in the fridge:
Mixed greens, green cabbage, red cabbage, carrot (premixed cole slaw without dressing), purple onion, red pepper, tomato, sprouts, avacado, beets as well as garbanzo beans, sunflower seeds and sometimes hard boiled egg and potato, and or salmon. I like my salads to be very moist, so I either mash up avacado and olive oil and water to make a dressing or I use a tablespoon of hidden valley dressing thoroughly mixed in. (I can't buy hidden valley here so I have to get sachets from USA).
My goal is to eat as much of my food as I can fresh and raw so that my body can get all the nutrients. I still crave cooked food and fats, like cheese and carbs and bread/tortilla. So sometimes I make up a veggie burrito and just put a big helping of salad inside it with some cheese and green chili sauce and will eat it hot if that is what my body wants. I think because I am so active here on the farm that my body constantly demands calories to burn. I never count calories or exercise. That just wouldn't work for me because I pretty much move constantly and snack as needed. But I do monitor my weight daily on the bathroom scales and if I get too out of whack I just fast for a day or two.
I am thinking though, that if I eat more salad and less sugar, then my weight wouldn't yo yo so much!
Today's agenda is hooking up the horse float and going to pick up Little Joe, the pony I gave my grandkids, as they are moving away to MIL's house next week, so he needs to come back home. He is a cute miniature appaloosa who does tricks like a dog. He lays down and sits and fetches balls. LOL And I need to make queens as well and I really NEED to go for a gallop on the beach and get lost and found in the forest with my bestie Big Mani Moo. So I'd better get moving as I need the Speed of Light to hit all my targets today. Wendy6 -
Katla, what if your DD just boxes up the items and y’all UPS them to you DS? Or get a flat rate box from the USPS and fill it up. Either option is probabl6 cheaper and less hassle than checking a bag.4

Barbara - Thanks for the tip on how to fold fitted sheets. I will try that. I printed the instructions out and will follow them 'step-by-step'. I know I will be getting rid of a lot of them. Only keeping 2 or 3 (one flannel) sets so I can have one 'on' and one 'off' on laundry days. Now to decide which ones to keep or not. I know I will keep a set of flannel sheets along with 2 other sets.

Out of step with the prevailing sentiment here as usual. I rebel against ‘positive’ resolutions. Add x food, eat more veggies, etc. These become chores in my mind and then I tend only resent them.
If I can frame things as goals, then I am more likely to wholeheartedly give it my best. Especially goals with flexibility or wiggle room. My calorie goals, for instance are now weekly goals - enabling me to be more flexible. I like games, and my Apple Watch makes getting my movement and exercise each day into a game (oops, have to go walk now if I want to close that ring today...). But paradoxically I hated the MFP challenge I joined - it felt too much like chore and too little like goal.
Probably ought to get my head shrunk, I sound a bit crazy and conflicted- lol

Sharon,
Know what you mean. I couldn't see myself ever marrying again. I've had three loves. The first was the love of my life but he was alcoholic and couldn't control his drinking and was a mean drunk. We were engaged but I wouldn't marry him until he quit drinking. He went through detox and alcohol rehab twice and then went back to drinking and at a drunken party another drunk shot and killed him. He was a good man and if he could have kicked the booze, I think we'd have married and been very happy.
Fast forward several years and I met and married a man who was widowed with two sweet children. The children won my heart and after knowing him only three years we married. In the next two years, we had two children together and our relationship became increasingly unhealthy. I wanted to wait to have more children...and that infuriated him. He resented the time I was busy with babies and school projects with my step children. He started to be abusive verbally to me and began to physically abuse his two children. I left him in 1977 and took all four children with me to the abused women's shelter. The divorce took forever and was messy because he claimed I kidnapped his son and daughter. Through this divorce I grew into a stronger more compassionate person. I learned that my stepchildren had a mother in another state. She came home from work one day and her kids and husband were gone. She spent all her money trying to find her two month old daughter and two year old son and wasn't successful. The daughter went to live with her mom and my stepson wanted to live with me. The state gave me physical custody of him and physical and legal custody of the two sons we had during our brief marriage.
I raised the sons and fifteen years later met a man who had also been divorced for 15 years and we eventually married and now after almost 25 years of marriage we still are good friends and enjoy each others company. Neither of us was looking for love and marriage when we found it. I call him my miracle. My kids like him and two of his three kids like me. Life is good. I feel fortunate and at peace.

Hi Gals,
On donating stuff – although my mom is a depression baby, she is not into holding on to things, and in this area I am also like my mom. But like so many I have far more stuff than I actually NEED. I am really clear with myself in the difference between need and want… so with clothes my thought is, 1 does it fit? if not donate, 2 do I like it? if not donate, 3 do I need the quantity of the item? – ie… jeans I need many pair as I wear them to garden in 5 days a week BUT true dress up clothes I need one party outfit, and one funeral outfit, all the rest donate… With non-clothes my system is would I grab it if I was evacuated? The few that get a yes are kept - If I didn’t take it and it was lost in the fire/flood/hurricane/earthquake would I replace it? If the answer is no- donate it (NOTICE here I am not saying would I list it for the insurance, I’m saying would you replace it); then there are all the things in the middle, and that is were I start to think about duplicates, how often I’ve used it, is there a better way to keep it – so for example I had a 30 cup coffee maker- I donated it to my garden club with the agreement that if I needed one I could borrow one…
Lanette – I need help with growing carrots, I have put them in dozens of times, and this year a 25 foot row, 1 yes ONE came up… what am I doing wrong?
Katla – I’m just the opposite of you, I check every time… I hate dealing with the overhead… no problems yet.
Rye – I love that you have discovered what works for you, I too turn things into a game sometimes…
Betsy – what a story! I love the current state

Betsy, love the story! and so very happy for you and dh that you found each other!
I am on hubby #1, it's been 36 years and we still speak to each other in a civil manner, most of the time anyway. We both have our moments. BUT, if he were to drop off the face of the earth tomorrow, I would not be looking to replace him. Not because he's irreplaceable (although he might tell you different! lol) but because I'm not willing to go thru all the "getting to know him" stuff again. And I think I would like the freedom of being a single woman, nobody to be waiting for me to do stuff, not having to wait for him so I can do stuff and not having the responsibility that is associated with being in a relationship. Also, I've seen a lot of what is out there, and I figure I'd be better off on my own! lol
I would like to travel a bit, and hubby doesn't really seem to want to and when we do go away, he always wants to stay in a hotel. I have a few elderly aunts and uncles who would be really hurt if we arrived in their town or city to visit them and stayed in a hotel. This means that I have traveled by myself on more than one occasion, which I am okay with, I enjoy driving so it's all good, but it would be nice to have him with me sometimes. And up until mid 2017, we both had a vehicle. We moved into a townhouse with a supposed 2 car garage, well, only if they are two smart cars! That's not true, we did get both vehicles in there, but it was then impossible to move around in there and both vehicles had to be in just the right spot. Since hubby has retired, and both vehicles were getting older (his 10 years, mine 12) we decided to trade them both in and buy just one new car. So now if I were to go away, he'd be without a vehicle. Mind you, he very rarely goes anywhere anyway, so maybe it would work. Just have to wait and see.
Anyway, must go do some work!

Kim - I like the way you think on the donating/thinning out your closet. I tend to get rid of small appliances and not regret it. I thought I needed a huge slow cooker to make applesauce - discovered it didn't heat evenly for my particular needs to gave it to the gospel mission. I keep a few nicer "work" outfits but need to thin out now that I seem to have clothes/pants that reliably fit me and hopefully won't need to have three sizes there anymore! I won't say that too loud, lol.
Carrots - 2 years ago, I also had a horrible crop - nothing.
So last year, I bought all new seed from a different seed supplier. I picked a different spot in the garden that had never had carrots planted there - prior crop was dry beans in that plot.
After I planted them, I immediately put lightweight row cover over them to hold in moisture and keep kitties/dogs/rabbits out. As the hot dry summer wore on, I would turn the hose on top the row cover a few times a week when I'd water the flowers planted nearby. By the end of the summer, I had little bitty carrots, but at least they germinated.
Lo and behold, once the hot spell was over and we started getting fall rain, guess what started to grow? They are by no means huge - about the length and diameter of my finger, but I'll take them. Just dug up a big bag full and they are very sweet!
One of my master gardener friends told me she plants carrots in the late summer and considers them a fall crop. Up until a couple years ago, we had nice summer carrots but now I tend to agree with her.
So good luck! I love carrots because unless it really freezes hard, they keep so well in the garden all winter. I still have row cover over them, by the way.

Heather: That is a mighty powerful looking pressure cooker. I have a much smaller one, along with one similar to the one you posted--and an Instant Pot. The Instant Pot is an object of adoration from DH, who loves it. I was happy enough with the old pressure cookers although it has been years since we've used the big old canner.
Dr Katie: "Katla, what if your DD just boxes up the items and y’all UPS them to you DS? Or get a flat rate box from the USPS and fill it up. Either option is probably cheaper and less hassle than checking a bag." That is exactly what we told DD that we want to do. She had a little melt down although I told her we'd pay for the shipping. :ohwell:
Kim: DH and I have had very poor success with checked bags in the past and it took us weeks to get our things back both times. They were different airline companies. :ohwell: I prefer to travel a bit lighter.
We watched Olympic Figure Skating Trials last night and enjoyed it. DH hasn't watched TV with me for a while but he liked this. There were some very remarkable performances. I think they'll be showing Men's Figure Skating this evening.

When I used to fly out to Indiana all the time to see my folks, I got tired of the airline losing my suitcase or sending it to another city.
So, I ended up picking out extra wardrobe items - undies, jeans, tops, sweaters - and UPS'd them to my folks house. From then on it was super easy flying out with just a carry-on and no risk of mess-up by the airline.
I think some airlines charge extra for suitcases so the UPS charge might be a wash anyhow.
Good luck!

Betsy. I'm happy you have found a guy that treats you, and kids, the way you/ they, ought to be treated. We all deserve respect, unconditional trust, and feel a sense of security in all of that.
I just looked up Vancouver Island, and its near Whidbey island, where husband and I want to move to this summer. Logistically though probably not very convenient! Thinking ferries involved, maybe pack animals... OK OK maybe not that many ferries involved....
