@JessicaMcB Do you have a rough date? I am just guessing it's one of the Mid-Week run classes. By then I must need an Edmonton Trip.
@PastorVincent SHOES QUESTION
I have 3 differant Shoes ( brands or models ) in rotation. Not sure if it helps me with injury reduction or not.
What I do like is if all of a sudden I get a niggle I set that shoe aside and run exclusively in the other shoes - to see if the niggle goes away which indicates end of life on the shoe or hangs around which means something is hurt.2 -
Wow this thread is moving fast today. Hi to all the new people!
@BrookeRunningMom Congrats!
@JessicaMcB I will be around. I think I'm on call for most of the month which means I can't really go anywhere I might lose cell phone coverage... so no trips out of town for me!
@juliet3455 An MFP Running Club party!
It's dumb stupid cold here and colder than my personal running threshold so I'll hit the gym after work except I left my bag at the top of the stairs so I have to go home first. Supposed to be colder on Saturday but right now I'm leaning towards bundling up and doing it anyway so I can get a few longer runs in awful conditions under my belt in case the weather sucks at Jasper (April in the Rockies could really go either way...).
I am eyeing a St Patrick's Day race solely because of the bling. Will probably decide tomorrow.4 -
So I got my current shoes in August... I avg like 40-50 miles a week... call that 5 months... so like 20 weeks.... so probably like 800-1000 miles?
Hmm. Maybe it is time for new shoes. Bah.1 -
@KatieJane83 - In New Orleans, my must sees are the French Quarter, Bourbon Street, St. Louis Catherdral, Jackson Square, City Park, and th French Market. Some of these are not kid/family friendly, but if you have kids with you a visit to Audubon Zoo is a must. I like history so I also recemmend the World War II Musuem, The Cabildo, Perservation Hall and the New Orleans Mint. Some of the places you might see on the half marathon route and the HM finishes near City Park.
Food is abundant in New Orleans - Cafe Du Monde - a must for beignets and coffee ( I like their chicory coffee) and Commanders Palace. Café Amelie is also a good restaurant. If you like oysters - Acme Oyster House. When in New Orleans, one must have shrimp and grits. Po-boy from anywhere is fabulous but the original (I think) po-boy place is in the French Market. Understandably, if you are on a special diet or do not want to try anything new before race day. If you do not make it to the original Café Du Monde, they have locations in the several malls and in the Riverwalk.2 -

Oh I get a severe case of bling envy when I see some of the medal photos people post on here. Though the half I'm doing in May on Martha's Vineyard has just released details of the bling on offer and I'm seriously excited.

On shoes - my favorite is Skora's Tempo and now that they are back in business I just ordered a pair of Forms - they were on sale, 25% off, so I figured why not... I have Altras and Topo Athletics as well as a pair of newer Saucony Kinvaras. I seem to have lots of problems with the sizing of Altras but I have heard they are getting better. I don't find them often here in stores to be able to try them on so then I end up paying to return/exchange. I typically wear 0 drop or 4mm and the Kinvaras are about as cushioned as I can deal with. They are also heavier than any of my other shoes so I only wear them for shorter training runs and I have problems with the heels slipping and my toes going to sleep. I have tried Brooks, NB and Asics used to be my go to shoe but I can't wear them any longer.
@hjeppley - if you like Altras you might also check out Skora or Topo. So far my Skora Tempos are my favorite road shoe but I haven't run in the Forms yet. One thing I really like about the Form is it has an adjustable strap on the heel so that you can make it tighter if you have a narrow heel that tends to slip. Their shoes fit really well in the heel anyway but this just makes it a bit better.
Thanks! I might just need to look at that. I've struggled with finding shoes that are low drop, wide in the toe box but narrow in the heel so those sound like they might do the trick as well. I've been frustrated with the longevity of the sides of the Altras--I seem to split through the fabric on the fronts of my shoes--inside sometimes, outside sometimes. It'd be nice if the upper lasted as long as the cushioning!0 -
@sarahthes @BruinsGal_91 I think I only run for the bling sometimes. I was scrolling through facebook the other night and was all "I need to do this Utah marathon because the medal looks amazing!"4

@shanaber I don’t know if I could run all winter in just a tank top but it’s definitely been warm enough lately. When I started running tho I would wear 3 tops and a hoodie but I like to run before 4am and it’s still pretty chilly then.0

@BruinsGal_91 I am so tempted by this one, too! Looks awesome. Man, I think I have too many trips already planned this spring, but none in May...
Much going on in this thread already, You all have me thinking about Strava and safety, new pairs of shoes (which I do need soon), and running on the beach (nice pics @bride001). Fortunately on that last one I'm heading to San Diego in a week so will get another ocean fix.
So, February is here. My goal the last two months was an average of 3 miles per day. I did 3.5 in Dec, but only 2.7 per day in Jan. I have some travel coming up, which may increase my miles by going where it's warm, but it also may be hard to find the time. But regardless, this month I'm going to go with 5k per day on average instead of 3 miles/day. The goal will be 87 miles total.
Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative
02/01/18 :::: 5.0 :::: 5.0
I started off the month strong with a 5 mile run. The weather was decent in the early afternoon and forecast to start raining/possibly snow later so I decided to take advantage of my flexible schedule and get out there. I didn't plan for an outside run without going home first, but I had packed a gym bag with running clothes in case I wanted to stop at the Y and run on the treadmill. I had capris and a tank top in the bag, and was wearing a sweatshirt anyway, so it worked out. I would have liked to have an ear-band and maybe some gloves because the wind off the lake was cold. I put my hoodie up for the last part of it and looked like a goofball. Bonus that I got 5 miles in on a weekday and that I ran a couple of errands I needed to get in on that part of town.
February Goal = 87 miles
Upcoming races:
4/22/18 Glass City Marathon relay (5-person relay) OR Half Marathon
6/3/18 Niagara Falls Women's Half Marathon
8/19/18 Falmouth Road Race (7 miles, pending group getting in by lottery)
11/4/18 ??? A marathon? NYC?

Finished January on a high note with a new distance PR of 8 miles. Whoop-Whoop! I woke up feeling sore and extremely hungry this morning and wondered why until I remembered my long run the night before. LOL. Anyway, because of that I am going to take it easy today with a really slow 5k on the treadmill and probably a lot of yoga and foam rolling afterwards.
This month's mileage goal: 85 miles. It's a bit of a stretch, but it averages out to only a little over 3 miles a day so I think it will be doable. If for some reason I get sick or something happens where I miss a substantial amount of runs, I would be happy with 70-75 miles as well.
This month's training goal: Last month I stuck strictly to running and a little yoga without adding anything complicated to the mix. The goal was to build up a bit of endurance and get used to running consistently again. Now that I have a good base to go off of, I am going to start adding in some more hill runs and sprints in preparation for the track season. I'm also going to do more strength training (not so much weights, more body weight type of workouts) as well. In the past I've loosely followed the Blogilates workout calendars, but if anyone has any good free resources with some training plans please share!
Keep smashing those mileage goals everyone! This month is going to be great!

rheddmobile wrote: »I forgot to ask in my post from early day - my race in March is on a beach in hard packed sand. I ran this last year in road shoes, but should I look for trail shoes or other type shoes to run this race?
@bride001 Was there any issue with the shoes you wore last year? If not, wear the same type. Personally I would avoid gortex. First, I wouldn't buy a shoe you only were needing for a race once a year. Second, a gortex shoe is designed not to let water in so long as the water doesn't come over the top. If a wave does comes up over the top, however, not only is it not going to keep that water from getting in, it's not going to let that water out and you'll be sloshing to the finish. Better to have a shoe designed to drain well and sock which can get wet and still not give you blisters. I can't think a situation where I'd use a gortex shoe for running.
My experience with goretex is that it does let water out - the whole point is that it's breathable as well as water resistant. Since my feet blister the instant they get wet, I really really rely on keeping them dry, and I run in a wetland preserve. Running last year in 100 degree weather my sock were barely damp in goretex, and well fitted shoes stay dry in ankle deep water. The only time they failed me was when they were pretty old and it seemed like between one day and the next, the goretex just gave up the ghost.
My experience is the same - Goretex lets sweaty feet breathe, but doesn't let water in.1 -
02/01/2018 - 7.2 MPH for 7.2 Miles @ 4% grade
Big Hairy Audacious Goal: Sub 4 hours in Pittsburgh 2018!
Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
03/17/18 - Shamrock Shuffle Half Marathon + 5k + 1mile
04/07/18 - Achilles 9.3 Challange (10k and 5k back to back)
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
05/12/18 - Glacier Ridge 50k Trail Ultra (I must hate myself)
2020 - Disney World Dopey! (if can raise funds)
So was a bit annoying and grateful for the footpod. I was at like 6.8 miles when I bumped the cut off switch and lost it all. Thankfully the Garmin was cool, so I restarted and finished the hour at my fastest dreadmill speed yet. 7.2 MPH up hill for an hour.
My plan right now for "speed work" is to get where I can sustain 7.5mph for an hour, then slowly push that up to HM length. On the weekends I will do "conversational" long runs. Figure that should put me in reach of sub-4 hour for sure. Or kill me. Either works I guess.3 -
@juliet3455 Namao RR offered me March 5 or 12, still talking to Ben about scheduling. Lemme know boss!
Re: Strava stranger danger discussion, this can all be avoided by not using it lol. It's buggy and awful for my phone so I see zero appeal in the thing personally.
My children gave me precisely 11:57 before having complete battle melt downs got just over 3k in on semi speed. Ugh.
February 1- 15+3

*Run in the Buff 120km TBA August
*Lost Souls 100 Miler, September 74 -
Ran in rain today so couldn't easily keep track of HR due to long-sleeved rain jacket. Realized running based on how it feels, while very enjoyable, might not be good for training endurance. HR spiked at 174 while it should've been 164 max.
@7lenny7 , I did a 5 minutes light jog as a warm up and I will definitely make it part of my fast and interval runs. Helped a lot to ease into it instead of rushing off. Thank you for the idea!
Slow run in Sunday and then a recovery week, might start taking my 5 year old with me for 1 small loop of 700 meters.

PastorVincent wrote: »SHOES QUESTION
I have seen people that buy the same shoe every time, and even stockpile them in case of discontinuement. These people swear by their shoes and all that.
I have also seen people say that you should change the brand of shoe on some kind of regular rotation as wearing the same shoes over and over is asking for injury. Switching brands makes you use different stabilizing muscles in your foot or something.
Which is more correct? I am probably buying a new street running shoe soon, and have had the same NB shoes the last couple times. My lazy habits just want to shop out the best price on the exact shoe so I can order it instead of dealing with a store.
Whatever works for you is correct.
I've done well with Saucony Kinvaras, buying old models 3 at a time as I wear out a rotation set. Then I got the free Hokas that were a dream for the cushioning. I had the vision of running Boston in them to help with all that downhill running. Then I came up with a sore quad after 18 miles in the Hokas on non-challenging terrain.
So, I tried the Hokas and a pair of Kinvaras for a hallway jog last Saturday before my long run; on a very forgiving, soft, level surface the Hokas hurt my injured quad more than the Kinvaras. I'm now 80% sure that the Hokas contributed to my quad injury. (No, they weren't the only contributing factor.) 80% is enough for me to put them in the pile of clothes to donate to charity. They don't even have 100 miles on them.
Stuff like this is why I'm moving back to the camp of stick with what works until it isn't available any more. THBS, I know there are other runners who can run half marathons and marathons in any running shoes that fit on their feet. I don't think I'm one of those runners, and I have no idea whether you are or not.3 -
Hello I am back to this challenge after about 4 years off.
I am a former marathon runner (4:50 PR in 2012) wow and I miss running! It's time for me to make a come back. I moved cross country and away from my running community. I tried to establish one here but it never gelled the way it did back East. I also met this man I wanted to spend all my time with. Now we are getting married and running needs to be part of our happily ever after.
I am going to start with a small 28 mile goal. Just a mile a day. I ran a 5K last night on the treadmill and I've still got some of my old running endurance so I am optimistic!
No races planned yet but I am working on it.

Given that there are a number of roads branching off that main road, I could live in a house anywhere in any of those streets. That's the point of the Strava hidden locations - it doesn't show the true start point. So for my theoretical stalker, I live in the park. Or in the Football Stadium. Or in the local museum's storage unit. Or maybe on the bridge.
If your username were trollinahat, under the bridge would be the first place I'd check.

Ran 2.11 miles on the treadmill today because it seems like Strava sometimes wants to shorten my distance so I've been messing around with my runs I think I will just stick to what my Garmin says.
February 1 - 2.1 Treadmill run
Upcoming Races:
2/10/18 Steven Cullen Healthy Heart 8K
3/17/18 USO 10 Mile Race
6/10/18 Manitowoc Half Marathon4 -

I do not use it while running. I only use the Garmin watch, but after I am done and save everything, Garmin pushes a copy of the run to Strava, allowing me to take part in stuff like the MFP Club.

re: Strava stalking
I get a lot of follow requests from names I don't always recognize. I assume most of them come from here, and I generally accept if the location sounds vaguely like somewhere I remember someone here talking about living or running. Yeah, I live on the edge. But I did "ignore" a user named "Strava runner" with no picture. Showed up later with a location of England. Still ignored him/her. Not enough clues to tell me it's someone I know online instead of a stalker bot.
That having been said . . . there have been several cases of someone I know slightly in the local running community ask, "Were you running on (road I run on frequently) last (day of the week that I don't remember exactly where I ran)?" They find me just seeing me by chance, not by cyberstalking.2 -
February Running Totals (miles)
2/1 – 5.01 easy
February running total to date – 5.01
Nominal challenge goal: 100 miles
Real goals: Transition from recovery to base building by end of month. Give myself a chance to start and complete Boston 2018.
Today's notes – At 44º F (7º C) with sunshine, it was too inviting to pass up running at 11 AM. Ran a mostly familiar route from home that I expected to have clear shoulders, and it did. There was still solid snow cover on the grass at that point, though a lot of green poked through later in the day.
The first 3 miles felt almost normal. The quad didn't ache bad enough to make me consider how long it would last until perhaps 3.8 miles (6K). If I'd been close to home, I'd have settled for a bit over 4 miles; but it felt better a bit later, and I added a loop to get 5 miles in.
It's slow progress in recovery, but it's progress. I expect I'll be able to run the USATF Master 8K in Virginia Beach on St. Patrick's Day; it's probably not a good idea to run the Shamrock Half the following day. If I hadn't got injured, that would have been the plan. A local friend of mine will be running that half, so maybe I'll hang out to see him cross the finish line.
2018 races:
February 17, 2018 Freezeroo #5 (Valentines Run "In Memory of Tom Brannon" 8 Mile) (Greece, NY)
February 24, 2018 Freezeroo #6 (White House Challenge 4.4 mile) (Webster, NY)
March 17, 2018 USATF Masters 8K (Shamrock 8K, Virginia Beach, VA) – tentative
April 16, 2018 Boston Marathon (Hopkinton, MA)

This morning, the temps were really mild thanks to warmer southerly winds blowing in, so running in a short-sleeved top and shorts in February felt...weird. Today marked running with the group, and so I did the regular 5-mile warm up, followed by another five with the group, and then one more mile because I had time before running back to the office.
01 - 11.49
Total: 11.49 / 140 miles6 -

With Dad essentially living there, I’m liking some of these suggestions that I haven’t tried before. Will have to remember some of those to try next time. As someone who has played tourist there frequently. I recommend original cafe du monde, but I recommend it at about 7 am. Before it’s busy and completely sticky. I also encourage a ghost tour. Info/get shown around, possibly a bit of history, and good stories.
Carousel bar, palace cafe, and cafe m’sparrows seem to be dads go to restaurants.
One of my favorites from a dining and cultural experience is the Sunday jazz brunch at Muriel’s, it is out of my usual price range but worth every penny.

I only accept Strava follow requests if they are also in the MFP club. Mainly just cause I do not want my feed there cluttered up with nonMFP people.1 -

I need to stop wimping out on cold days, I think. Oh well. I'm going to attempt an outdoor long run Saturday because the gym has been stupid busy which means they enforce the 30 minute treadmill time limit and I'm super slow which means I either need to wait for another round or jump on the elliptical and I think I hate the elliptical even more than the treadmill.
@JessicaMcB Namao is just about on exactly the opposite end of the city from me. Whatever date you settle on just let me know. I can make it work.
