Terry , sorry I was unclear about "the ex", I was referring to Jack's ex wife. She has not been easy to deal with. Now I speak and am polite and don't hang around long enough for her to make any snide/rude comment. Ten years later we actually avoid her when possible.

Happy birthday Terry!
Penny-I loved your post! Congrats on the Requiem success! I, too, would have been laughing at Martha Stewart's reaction. If there is one thing social media and Youtube has taught me is this; the world is filled with wonderfully gifted, skilled, talented people. Before the internet, we would be astounded by the few who were "discovered" and then profiled in papers, news, etc. Now...talent is everywhere. I think that is a great thing and speaks to the intricacy of our brains and bodies. We should not be surprised that we would find talent anywhere. I think it would be much more surprising, and sad, to find a life that hadn't found a gift, talent, or skill.
Carol- Glad to hear your son is doing well on his recovery. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers for continued success.
Heather- I would have to agree with you on your DIL making your son, her husband accountable for his actions/choices. I am sure they will figure it all out. She may take no nonsense, but she seems a very fair and humane person. Everyone deserves a second chance. Sometimes even thirds. And do our kids even know how much we care? lol I think they do, they would rather we just care a little less, sometimes. (at least that is how my kids come across, to me).
Mary- So sorry to hear that the teaching position didn't work out. fingers crossed if you look in the same area/district that your hubby is in. Hope you feel better soon!
Becca- So glad your DH's surgery went well! Happy you are home safe! Look both ways, check your mirrors!
Allie- hugs, hugs, hugs! If you ask that they hold him in contempt this time, you need to voice what this is costing you in terms of your work/vacation hours wasted and money wasted because he can't seem to get his s**t together. Shame on him and the courts that allow him to do this!
Happy Mardi Gras! The kids and I made a King Cake this morning. I just pulled it out of the oven. I forgot the recipe makes two cakes (why would they write it that way?!?) So...I made the kiddos their cake (putting the baby in now), and I made mini cakes (cinnamon roll style) for DH and DYS. I had one small one. They are yummy! I will send them to work with DYS tonight after they each have one. I did substitute whole wheat flour and flax meal for the white flour. I cut the sugar out of the filling. I ate my piece with out the icing. So they are pretty healthy; I just shouldn't be having the bread.
All of the kids are napping now. I am kind of stunned. I will get some pics of our craft and cake and share them with you all. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)4 -
I'm hoping I'm in the right place for some help. First let me say that I'm 66, retired and need to lose 40 lbs. I had a bad fall about 10 years ago and I don't have the best knees. I'm looking for advice on losing weight for someone in my age bracket. My metabolism is slower than someone in their 30's.
When I was working it was easier to control my weight because food wasn't as accessible. Now that I'm home, I've discovered that I'm what I feel is the worse kind of eater. I'm a snacker! I don't eat big meals because I've been snacking all day. Sweets are my downfall. I actually get the shakes if I don't have at least a small piece of candy during the day. I'm not diabetic. My sugar levels are surprising good when I go to the doctor. I don't like the good fruit, like any type of berries, but I have found I can drink them in a smoothy. Although smoothies still leave me feeling hungry. I enjoy good food.
Please don't tell me about cauliflower recipes. I've tried them and don't like them. I love pasta. I do try to buy the ones with some fiber. I don't like the grittiness of the whole grain pastas. I buy bread with fiber, but I'm not a big bread eater. In fact, most of the time I end up throwing away half of the loaf. Most of the time I eat only one main meal a day. By the time I get up, most of the morning is gone, so I have oatmeal or cereal with coffee. I'm usually snacking during the first part of the afternoon, while getting ready or running errands, etc and then we usually eat dinner around between 4-5. By the evening, around 8pm, I'm looking for a snack.
Sleeping is not a problem. I usually go to bed around midnight and can easily sleep until 10am. I have been looking through youtube, trying to find some exercises for seniors. My knees keep me from doing anything too strenuous.
Snacking is my biggest issue. So now that you know a little about me, any advice on how to kick start my energy, snack less and eat better?

Penny - That choir looks like fantastic fun! And nice to get a bit of extra attention.
Congrats Pat on the 2 lbs.
My dinner of duck legs and turnips (with broccoli ) was amazing today. I think I've invented a whole new recipe. If any of you like spicy food, I spread Korean Gochugan paste on the duck legs before roasting in a small square tin. (I put in a few potatoes for DH next to the legs) Then in a separate square tin I put in some peeled and halved little mauve and white turnips, just lightly tossed in a bit more of the sauce and a drip of olive oil. I roasted everything in an oven 180 ° C for 90 mins. Heaven! Quite spicy, but DH loved it and he doesn't like really hot.
New series of Shetland starting tonight.
I am currently watching the latest series of Great American Railroad which takes us all around the US by rail. We are in California at the moment. Very enjoyable and I hope it will persuade DH to visit one day.
The only vacation we have planned for this year is the cruise in June. It's hard to plan when you might be moving. Plus we are both finishing books and wouldn't welcome distraction at the moment. Nose to the grindstone. I would like a quick spring jaunt though, just for a few days to France. Usually it's up to me to book these things.
Got to sign the Valentine's card and wrap the presents in a bit. I've got him my favourite chocolate truffles and a hardback crime novel by my favourite author. (his too) Also his favourite stem ginger biscuits.

Penny - I just love Google translate, there are always some lovely gotchas... It translated the caption under your picture as "Longyearbyen mixed cakes performed Requiem at the house on Saturday night. " Gave me a wonderful giggle.

It's Fat Tuesday! Laissez les bon temps rouler!
Pat - Wow, your new scale really does sound smart! Or at least its app does.
Felicia - Wishing you all the best. That's definitely some freaky finger coloring there!
Terry - Well, whether or not the helmet works, it certainly makes for a futuristic photo!
Cheri - I'm thinking about a trip to College Station in March. Maybe we can meet up!
Janet - My office/crafting/exercise room makes yours look positively ship-shape!
Katla - I watched some snowboarding and speed skating too. But I can't ever seem to catch the figure skating, which is the only event I really want to watch!
Okie - Woohoo for a vacation with no consequences on the scale!
Allie - My cousin gave me some good advice in December when Dad died. He said, "Just give yourself some time. You'll feel like you have to do everything right now, but you actually have plenty of time to deal with the estate so take as much as you need." So far he's been right... I really would like to have it all wrapped up as soon as possible, but I'm only human and I have a job as well as other people whose responses affect the process in ways I can't always change. As for your attorney, why in the heck should you have to talk to Tom? That's what your attorney is paid for!
Well, I took a break from work to slog through some more estate paperwork. Dad wasn't rich by any means, but he worked hard and saved all his life, and my share of his estate will be enough to make a significant difference for Philip and me. At the very least, we don't have to worry quite so much about retirement... Philip jokes that we might be able to upgrade to a premium brand of cat food while we're living under a bridge!
Anyhow, papers are signed and in the mailbox (one of the few bits that did not require a special trip to find a notary or a "medallion signature guarantee"), so I'd better get back to work now.
Everybody have a guilt-free virtual beignet on me!

Went to the ceramics place here. Got this seahorse that I think will look good down here. The other day I got one to put on our pergola. Then went to CVS to get toothpaste for free. Vince said he needed some. Then to Aldi to get Vince his cereal. He didn't want to go all these place so I reminded him that he's the one who told me we need to consolidate trips and if he'd told me yesterday when I went to Aldi, I would have gotten his cereal then. Then went bowling. I did find a bowling ball that I think is pretty. Mine is about 40 years old. There was a part of me that didn't want to spend the $$, but Vince said that I've lived so long with the old ball, I can get the new one. Also got a bag since mine from 40 years ago is continuing to rip. Now home to have dinner. I guess I shouldn't feel bad about spending the $$. He's bought himself 2 bowling balls and a new bag since we started bowling.
Laura - welcome. Boy, you've sure had your share of medical issues. Glad you're here now
Pat - what a wonderful experience you had at the duathalon.
Denise was saying how she and Pete would fly down here this weekend, spend time with Pete's father then drive to Titusville. We told her this was the weekend of the 500. This may be mean to say, but I'm glad it's the weekend of the 500. I really don't care to entertain his father. Now I'm a person who is very open to entertaining just about anyone, but I don't care to entertain him
The other day I got this kale salad. I threw out the dressing, or so I thought. Today I found these 2 packets and at first thought it was more dressing. Turns out one of them is the dried cranberries and the other is sesame seeds Now that I'll eat
Jess called while we were bowling. She's going to get NC residency. Since she'll be in St. Kitts for 3 years, her auto insurance etc will be cheaper in NC than in VA.

The big annual report I edit goes to layout tomorrow, and after that I have an online PhD course to teach and a PhD thesis to edit. Then around March 1 we head to Stockholm to take care of the grandkids while their parents and the other grandparents go to the wedding of a cousin on the other side of the family tree. The grandkids and their parents will be coming up to our island paradise in northern Norway for Easter.
It's funny how every time I'm there at my island paradise, I think there's no better place on earth, and while I'm here at the north pole, I can't imagine being truly happy anywhere else.
I'm truly lucky!

Penny at the Pole: I have missed your posts! I am soooo happy to see your comments & your picture. :flowerforyou: PS Martha Stewart sounds like a bit of an @ss. :ohwell:
Laura from Saskatchewan: Welcome. It sounds like you and your DH have had more than your fair share of medical issues recently. I hope the situation improves for you both.
DL in TX: Welcome to a great group of women. The system here at MFP is calorie counting. MFP gives you a target calorie goal based on what you tell it about your weight. You add the calories you eat and subtract the calories you burn though exercise each day. It works, but it isn't a quick fix. Instead, it is a lifestyle change. Stick around for the good advice, support and friendship.
Michelle: It sounds like you're having a great time in Florida. Good for you!!! :flowerforyou:
My doctor sent me a message that I need to get a pneumonia vaccination, so I went into the pharmacy to get it done. The pharmacist asked me to come on a day that he is not there. He messed up a vaccination for me once in the past and I had shoulder pain for more a few years because of it. That eventually healed, but I'll be happy enough to have someone else give me the pneumonia vaccine.
I have a city committee meeting this evening and I need to spend some time reviewing the packet before the meeting. So far it seems straight forward, and I have hopes that the meeting will not turn out to run into the late hours of the night.

Hello ladies! No time to bug bomb today. During the middle of the night I also applied for a teaching position and was contacted for an interview this morning. However at the ladies luncheon today I found out that the school is an hour away from where we live. So needless to say I will not be applying for that job. There must be something in me that really wants to continue teaching because in the middle of the night I am jobhunting! Tomorrow night we will be attending a Valentine party here at the resort. We absolutely love it here! After the ladies luncheon today one of the other ladies and I took our dogs to the dog park and played for about an hour. Now I am sitting in the car waiting for John to get out of physical therapy. In case I did not mention it while we were playing pickle ball he Fat ell forward into the net and dislocated his arm and ended up with a fractured arm. Which was better than a rotator cuff tear. Which is what they thought it was in the first place. It's amazing that in MRI without insurance was less than $300 when I paid out of pocket 1800 for my MRI with insurance. I'm still thinking of checking out my husbands school district maybe as a substitute.
Have a great day everyone!

Hi, fighting a bladder infection which is driving me nuts. It started yesterday. I am taking some over the counter meds, drinking plenty of water and running to the bathroom every 2 seconds. Can’t concentrate so will close for today.
Thinking of you all, Terry5 -
Mary, I wanted to say thank you for your example to have been to me. At the beginning of the year I decided to get the kettlebell back out. This is the first time I've actually done it faithfully pretty much every day. Not only have I lost 16 lbs i can see a big difference in my arms, legs and stomach. I put on a pair of jeans this morning to go to the dentist that I haven't worn in over a year, they slid on easily and I was thrilled. I also add 30-40 minutes cardio along with the kettlebell. Thinking about moving up to the heavier kettlebell.
Thank you

Still busy-busy-busy.
Just popping in to say we performed Mozart's Requiem Saturday evening.
The dress rehearsal Friday provided a little tickle of smug enjoyment. There we were, rehearsing, when who should sneak in through the door but Martha Stewart and a couple dozen others in her entourage. She's had some kind of competition in which a ten dollar donation to the Crop Trust earns you a lottery ticket for a trip with Martha to my home town, where the planned activities included a visit to the Global Seed Vault, snowmobiling, visiting and ice cave, dogsledding, and a gourmet dinner.
Well the gourmet dinner was downstairs from the concert hall where we were rehearsing. When we arrived for the dress rehearsal, the Stewart gang had just started sipping their before-dinner champagne in the lobby. We pushed our way through (politely, of course) and got to work. But the singing carried and soon we saw people peeking through the doorway. Then they ventured in. Then they poured in. And listened. And took photos and videos with their cell phones. And applauded whenever we got to the end of a section. :grumble:
Martha herself stood there looking totally gobsmacked, her mouth hanging open, shaking her head in disbelief, as though an orangutan had abruptly started reciting a sonnet by John Donne. Apparently she hadn't expected to find any culture this far away from civilization. I've filed the episode in the mental drawer I keep for truly bizarre experiences.
Saturday's performance, went well. Here's the article about it in Svalbardposten, with a big picture. I'm in the front row, second from the left, with the black pearl necklace. http://svalbardposten.no/nyheter/requiem-for-full-hals/19.9399

Ohh, I love Shetland series too! Some of his cases take 4 episodes to resolve, and the shows writers keep you guessing. I love mystery shows where you find out who done it, at the end. Not those kind where they show who did it in the beginning, and you patiently wait for the darn actors to figure it out!
The dinner sounded heavenly!!!

Heather. We also had pancakes today. Did anyone celebrate Mardi Gras except KJ and the kids? Whomever gets the baby in the king cake has to have the next party.

Good evening my dear sisters. I am dividing time with you and figure skating at the Olympics.
Katla, on my iPad, where I a, typing now I am the weird name. I did t choose it. I have emailed them and asked them to get me back. If I a, on my laptop I a, Jmkmomm or me! Again, I apologize for typos. You guys don't k ow how cold the iPad screen is for frozen fingers. I play one dacebokk game and there is on.y one thing that requires my left hand. Since I am left handed, I used to play it with my left hand but I have trained my right hand to do it. I don't do it as fast but that OK.
Some one asks if my doctor knows about it. Yes he does. I had a stroke at the end of December and it affected the part of my brain that controls your sensory such as touch. So at first it was my lips and fingers on my left side. They were numb. It eventually throughout the night the left side of my nose and left cheek were all numb. So after about a week, all of those areas became flaming hot. My doctor said that it was due to the nerves regenerating. So even though it was pretty painful, it was good to see my nerves were regenerating. So from flaming hot, it changed to frozen. I'm not sure which is worse. At least for the frozen part, I can wrap my finger up. But everything you touch is cold, really cold. Just think of your silverware or glass, a mug. Even paper is cold, a magazine. The remote control, the phone. I love it when Mozart lies in my lap on the left side. My right hand is letting him. If he lays in the right side of my lap, my left side is letting him and that is jut to weird.
Some one asked about my cats names. We didn't choose their names. We got both of them through a rescue group here and they named them. We have had Melody for I think 3 years. Ne day I told Charlie we needed a kitten and I started looking on the rescue sight and I saw this little tabby climbing on the piece of fabric in his cage. His litter mate was just laying there. I knew I had to have him. When I inquire, they said his name was Mozart and that did it for us. He was meant for our family. I don't know if I have a recent picture of them here on my IPad or not. If not I will have to get one! I have wished many days I had called Mozart George for Curiouse George or even Mr Tail. His tail defines him. When he is waking, his tail is about as high as my hips.
I have mentioned my nephew who was an alcoholic many times. He is just the greatest guy. Today is his sons 21st birthday. Well Alan had chest pain and went to the ER. One of our hospitals here is a heart hospital and that is where he went. Well his EKG was normal and they said he. Use have pulled a muscle. So,laters in the day the pain was worse and he went back to the ER. I can jut imagine what his insurance bill is going to be. I dot mean the bill. I mean the explanation of benefits. I guess this time he got a different doctor. We'll they sent him to the cath lab, which in my mind is the gold standRd of care for chest pain. He had one artery that was completely blocked and another one that was 90% blocked. So he now has two stents. When I was talking to my sister, I was saying who is next. My Dad was Diabetic 2 and had 2 open heart surgeries, do after the second one. I have one stent, my sister and both brothers and all three of the femal cousins are very obese. Th three cousins being my two girls and my sisters daughter. Of my two brothers, one is very obese. You will appreciate this Becca. The others brother was full time Navy and he is in pretty good shape. They lived in Navy housing and he rode his bike to work all the time. He even continued that in his non Nacy job.
I will always remember this nephews sons birthday. I was in the hospital being diagnosed with MS when their baby was born. He was what my Mom called a blue baby and was in the NICU for several days. When I was discharged, I went from one hospital directly to another to be with them.
Allie, I just wish the entire sisterhood here could be there in person and stand beside you in court. We would be a force not to be reconded with. Tom's attorney would stand up and take notice.
I found a picture of my two cats. Please ignore the pillow with the pillow are half off. Well that wasn't the
Picture I was thinking I was clicking on but it's OK
Well my book is ong enough to tnight. Nighty night Joyce, Indiana.5
