When it comes to cycling (my main sport), I calculate calories burned as 100 calories for every 5 km. This matches what Strava gives me quite closely and is easy to calculate when I'm out there on the bicycle.
So at a brisk (for me) pace of 20 km/h ... yes, I'm slow!! ... I burn about 400 calories per hour while cycling.
And therefore, at 100 cal/5 km ... if I go for a 50 km ride on the weekend, I will have burned 1000 calories which is great because it means I can eat something extra after the ride.
All that said, I struggle with maintenance because of my long rides (150+ km). I find those rides easier if I eat quite a bit the day before, and then eat whatever I want to eat during the ride, and then eat whatever I want to eat after the ride and possibly also for the next day. My body seems to know what it needs so "whatever I want to eat" are things that provide me with energy and recovery material.
For example, once I'm into a ride, I will start craving salty protein which is exactly what I need then and also immediately after the ride. The next day, I often crave large quantities of 100% pure fruit juice ... and sometimes I want that on the ride as well. I suspect I'm after the carbs and Vit C.
However, when I've got long events every couple weeks, I go into a yo-yo thing with my weight. For 2 weeks I eat in deficit and lose a kilogram or so. Great! Then I do a long ride, and gain 3 kg. Not to worry, some of that is water weight and by the following Wednesday I'm down 2 kg. But now I'm back to where I was. So I eat in deficit for a couple weeks and maybe lose a kilogram ... and repeat. And my weight just keeps bobbing up and down without really going anywhere.
I do find it easier to lose weight after the heavy cycling season ... so I've just got to be patient.
BTW - I've tried to eat less surrounding and during my long rides, but my performance really suffers and I'm as crabby and irritable as can be. It's just better to let my body decide for about 3 days.
And now I'm off for a brisk walk!

So has anyone traveled with a small dog on an airplane? I know we need to have an airline certified carrier that can fit under the seat, notify the airline in advance and pay the "pet fee". Is there anything else I really need to know? We are hoping to get my father-in-law to come visit but he won't come without his dog. She's really what has kept him going after the death of his wife. She's not a certified emotional support dog though so she needs to travel as a pet. I won't scam the system and get a fake vest and certificate because I think that's dishonest and hurts the people who really need their animals in that way.
She's a tiny little thing and really sweet but how do you handle them on the plane? Always keep them in the carrier? And before the flight, is there a way to see if the departing airport has a "doggie bathroom" that you can get to inside security? It's going to be a huge issue getting through security anyway with false knees, wheelchair etc we don't want to have to do that more than once and need to have plenty of time to get Dad through it all.
Thanks,
Marcelyn5 -
Exciting news for Cheri and Heather, Lots of plans to be made if the sales come through.
Went to a new class at the Y today and really enjoyed it. I like the classes more than the machines. Played bridge this afternoon so had a busy day.
Sue - I just love your puppy. That’s the kind I will get when we can’t travel anymore. Did you get her from a breeder?
DJ- good to hear from you again. You are one busy lady.

Hi Sisters, I have a little headache as I am trying to wean off caffeine again. I'm just having a green tea today and then hope tomorrow I can go free of anything. I spent the afternoon with the hives but I got up early and did an Hour run and half hour walk in a new forest area that I've just discovered. Jock ran with me today. I did a shop for the week on my way home from my run.
I have decided to follow Ernestine Shepherd's diet as much as I can. I have been struggling and changing direction too often and I need to plan ahead and make the same meals so it becomes a routine. Ernie eats a lot to fuel her ten mile runs and her work outs. (She's my hero role model, 80 years old and still hot, strong and healthy) She does eat chicken and turkey though and I don't (I have pet chickens and it makes me sick to think of eating chicken! Be like eating dog to me.) So I will substitute shrimp and mushrooms for the chicken meals. She eats a green veggie at most meals (asparagus, broccoli, spinach, green beans) and a lot of egg whites. She also has brown rice, porridge and sweet potatoes and tuna, walnuts and pineapple. So I have stocked up on all of the above and am starting off on a new foot.
She eats five meals a day and drinks 16 oz water after each meal. That will be hard for me as I am not a big water drinker. I will flavour it with lemon, ginger, red bush tea to help get it down. I am HOPING that by eating often and drinking more that I will replace my constant cravings for sugar. I am going to go make up a big batch of brown rice that i can keep in the fridge for the week as well as bake the sweet potatoes. I will need to have food made up to take with me to work as we don't have much of a kitchen there.
I had to tell off two of the employees for leaving the front gate open again today. I had my horses grazing in the driveway area and there was nothing to stop them from getting onto the main highway. FRICK! I was busy making queens and when I saw that they had left the gate open I had to climb over a five wire fence in my bee suit to close it. I was ANNOYED!
I will go put the rice on and do some kettlebell swinging.

I forgot that I need to take notes when I read your posts! Lots of exciting news and shares. Have a day driving and sitting in class tomorrow,so getting ready for bed. Will try to hit high points though. Prayers for those with health issues going on in their lives. You are on the best track you can be on if you are on this site. Congratulations on the new houses. That is exciting!
I have plucked eyebrows since I was 13. At 55, I pluck the big strays. The small greys and the mustache I leave to my hairdresser to wax.
Things are in an uproar at work. I work with my husband and his sister in the family business. My son in law has worked there the last two years. We will just say, that it really isn't the easiest place to work. He is getting ready to start a new job soon. Better pay, better benefits, more respect. I am happy for him, sad for me.
I am determined to get back to my goal weight. I loved the 2 years I was close, but then got lazy. I am close to my February goal. Weigh in is on Wednesday and I am .3 away from goal for February.
Marcelyn- I agree with the companion dog stuffs. The problem is that people abuse the rights to do certain things which makes it bad for those that need it. I have never flown with a pet before. I would have to buy seats for my big girls! I hope it works out okay for you.
Good night ladies!

Marcelyn, DD just brought our puppy from Denver to Seattle 3 weeks ago. We bought a soft-sided carrier. It was a Sherpa brand carrier which came with a guaranteed on board certificate so they would pay if airline rejected due to the carrier. You need to find out from the airline you are using what size is allowed. Go to the airport web site to find pet relief area located inside security. Most major airports have them. There may be one outside the airport too to use before or just after the flight. You will need a health certificate from the vet not more than 30 days old. The dog has to stay in the carrier during the flight. You might want to put a piece of clothing of your father's in with her if you think she might be anxious. You may not use drugs to calm an animal on the plane but you could use Bach's Rescue Remedy. It is a herbal calming agent. DD was able to open the front door of the carrier part way during the flight to pet the dog and give her some ice cubes when she was hot. She traveled extremely well.
SueBDew - She is a labradoodle. I got her from my best friend who bred her dog to get a puppy for her grandkids.
She was surprised with 10 puppies. I recently lost my standard poodle so was looking for another dog.

I am very excited for Cheri and Heather for their upcoming new homes. It has been almost seven years since we moved to our current home and I still remember clearly the joy and excitement of finding a buyer for the house we had and finding the house we could afford that was in the right neighborhood and had the features we wanted. Best wishes on your upcoming adventures.
About physical therapy--when Jake had P.T. for the first time, he came home saying that they should arrest the physical therapist for inflicting so much pain on him. I remember my physical therapy after my surgery. The sessions weren't bad but the exercises at home were more painful than the aftermath of the surgery, but I am grateful because I am now walking and dancing with a straight back on no pain.

I didn't used to be a water drinker either, but now I keep a bottle in the fridge at work so that it is nice and cold, and I've got a large glass on my desk.
As soon as I arrive at work, I have a black coffee and a glass of water (about 750 ml). I drink both while working and it takes about an hour to go through them, but I find that both are refreshing and energising first thing in the morning. Yesterday, for example, I went to university first and didn't get to work until about 11:30 am. I had about 2 swallows of water before university, but it wasn't enough. By the time I got to work, I felt so dehydrated, headachy, and tired. A black coffee and 750 ml of cold water later and I was feeling much better.
Then I go for a walk at lunch and when I come back in, I make my lunch to eat at my desk and pour another 750 ml of cold water. Because I'm usually warm after the walk, I go through that quite quickly.
And then, later in the afternoon when I'm feeling draggy and sleepy, I'll have another 750 ml glass of water. And sometimes also another coffee as well. That gets me through to the end of the day.
If I don't do that, not only do I feel like I'm dragging myself around, but also my joints ache, my skin feels sensitive, and my feet cramp. So that's a big incentive to keep up with at least those 3 glasses of water a day (about 2 litres).
Regarding the rice ... be very, very careful with storing it. I used to think that rice could be kept for a long time in the fridge, and even a long time just on the counter.
Then in 2006, I was on a long distance cycling event and pulled into one of the controls (rest stops) relatively early on in the ride ... maybe about 12 hours in. There they had a big batch of fried rice. Great! I love fried rice, and it goes down well on long rides. So I had a heaping plate of it and then some extra. My soon-to-be husband had about half a plate and so did another guy who was riding about our pace as well.
Not long after, I started to feel ... off. Unsettled and not well. I chalked it up to the long ride ... sometimes I feel that way on these long rides. We rolled into another control and I tried to have a bit of soup, but had trouble getting it down. I was really starting to feel quite nauseated. And then the vomiting started ... and it was impressive. I got to the point where I couldn't even be bothered to get off the bicycle anymore. I'd stop, lean over and blah into the ditch, and just keep moving. Every 10 or 15 minutes all night long. It was a very long and memorable night. Middlebury Gap on the east coast US will never be the same again.
About 24 hours after eating the rice, I started feeling better, but I had ridden 24 hours with almost no food and I was completely out of energy and out of time (these are timed events), and I couldn't go on.
The culprit was Bacillus cereus in the fried rice. The people at that rest stop had acquired the fried rice from the local Chinese place much earlier in the day when the first riders came through, and had left it sitting out. So because I'm slower, I didn't eat it until it had been sitting out about 6 hours.
My husband and the other guy were mildly affected, but because I ate so much more of it than they did, and I'm smaller, it hit me hard.
I still love rice, but ever since then, I've been really cautious around it. So ... be careful!! I wouldn't wish Bacillus cereus on anyone!

Had a long talk with DH tonight. A very good but painful talk. This weekend with friends, well it was a bit of a nightmare for me. We won’t be going back, that seems clear.
He probably will, we spent the weekend with his best friend and her husband, and it was fine, even fun for DH. It was a very different experience for me.
I’m left torn, coming somewhat between DH and his friends. Because, honestly, if I won’t go down to visit them, he will do so much less frequently by himself. I hate to have that effect, but I have to stand up for myself and not put myself in that position again.
I’m being vague and only wish to say that their behavior to me was thoughtless, insensitive and rude most of the weekend. And I kinda blew my top this evening at home, and poor hubby had to hold my hand and listen. He’s good at that:)
Sigh. Feeling determined but also feeling guilty that it will effect DH’s friendship.
I’m not very good at social interactions on the intermediate level. Pretty good at the intimate and superficial levels, but really mess up the ‘just friendly’ level.

I remember when my mOm had had her should've repaired and I had to assist because I was her therapist at home. She past out the first time they did it! I'm glad by the time she went home she was tolerating the much better. I also did my sisters first knee replacement. I tell toy, when you do those excersises, it Is a bonding time because your loved one has to have complete trust in you.
Now, my sister. They called her today. They say they tried to call her 3 times Friday and never got her. My sister denies her phone ringing from them. But her surgery is cancelled until she has a stres test. Earliest she can get that is May 31st! I encouraged her to see if she can get on their cancellation list. She doesn't understand how that can happen but stress tests can be cancelled for one reason or another. But she says she won't call. I also talked to her about MFP and she said she wants to stick with WW. She says she wants some one accountable to. I told her about the bonds made here, you post goals one month, next month you post how you do. Now I don't do that but I know Barbie does encourage that. So she doesn't want to come here. And that is OK. I told her about how DJ and Pip kick our butt when needed but she said she wants a physical boot. So I told her about Pips big concrete looking boot but she wants some one to lean on, to hug or cry with. So I guess I don't have to worry about talking about my sister here.
Eyebrow. Nope, never have plucked, never needed to. I guess I have good genes. Charlie has relatives that are Native American and his Dad's hair showed it. Michelle's eye brows also did. She also has very thick hair but I still did at her age. But she does pluck her eye brows. I bought one of those things sold on TV that looks like a lipstick tube for my chin hairs.mit is wonderful. Not when I actually plucked them, they wouldn't come back for awhile. But with this lipstick thingy, you have to use it almost every day. But it is very easy. And it's easy to empty it. It also comes with a brush to help empty it. Before I bought it, I had my bonding time with Michelle when she would do it for me. I can't ever imagine doing that with my Mother. It's just not something that would be brought up. It's private.
Speaking of selling a home, Mom lived in an area that surrounded our midtown University. We have another big one but its way out on the west side. University of Evansville has been here for a long time. They had always been looking for houses to buy around the university for visiting proffesers or student housing. So there were many times they knocked on her door or called her asking if she wanted to sell her house. So the time came that she knew she would soon be needing to move into assistive living and she called them and asked if they were still interested. So she sold it and then told them that she would like to rent it at the same cost of her mortgage until she needed to move. They couldn't have possession until she was ready to move. And they did this. Dad never even let use a check book while they were married. She knew nothing of the homes expenses. So after he died she did this crash course of looking into th expenses, now to use a check book, etc. I wish Dad could have seen the kind of business woman that Mom actually was. If so maybe she could have taken a big load off of his shoulders. When she went into assistive living, it was this beautiful old antique building. They eventually had to shut it down due to the big business assistive living places that moved into town. So this big building has remained empty. On the news tonight they said some one had bought it and wanted to restore it to its beauty.
Well my pinky finger decided to wake up today. I hope it doesn't go through the feeling so cold it's frozen that the thumb and index finger do. I can easily hold my thumb and index finger together to warm them up. But you put the pinky in there and it gets awkward. But if the next finger joins in the re-awakening, then it will really be awkward to hold all those fingers together. All that is left to not be held closely is e middle finger.
My blood pressure is doing really well. I take several that are once a day and I take so,e at lunch others at bedtime. But I have one that is four times a day. I am to hold it if the upper number is less than 130. So I am usually taking this medicine only once or twice a day now. I see my doctor on the 13th and I hope he will be pleased.
Well m fingers are getting cold typing on my iPad so I will bid you girls good night. Hearer and Cheri, I hope you can sleep tonight. I also need to be a referee with my kitties.

Well, now I'm all disappointed that you don't burn off a hundred calories walking a mile, LOL!
Just goes to show you that exercise is not an efficient way to lose weight. I have never counted exercise calories into my equation. Of course it's important to exercise for many reasons, but it isn't an efficient weight loss strategy. I do like Jazzercise & walking. Also biking & swimming, though have done neither of those for a long time. There was a time many years ago when I did a different activity every day, using various machines, pool, walking, running, etc. I was in pretty good shape in those days. It took about 2 weeks to rotate through the various activities. I never got hurt, and was always stronger the next time I got on the rowing machine, or into the pool, etc., even if it had been a couple of weeks since last doing that activity.

Greetings everyone
Lanette
Thanks for the link! I had a lot of fun with it.
It is really good for removing wrinkles!
I went out for dinner tonight at a buffet and was able to make great choices to stay on track. They even had a slice of plain angel food cake! I am going to make my May goal at this rate - I'm pretty psyched
Thanks for all the encouragement ladies!

It is ... if you do enough of it.
For many years, I struggled to say within my normal BMI range. I kept dropping into "underweight" even though I felt like I was eating myself out of house and home.
In those years, I was cycling approx. 10,000 km a years plus walking a whole lot plus weightlifting plus a bit of cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.
I would spend the winter deliberately putting on 20 lbs ... and come summer I'd be exercising so much, I drop the 20 lbs and then some.
But I was cycling 10-20 hours just on the weekend during those summers, plus a couple hours a day during the week.
However, these days I have trouble going over 50 hours a month so the weight isn't dropping off like it used to.
You can include exercise but unfortunately we don't burn as much as we might hope. And this is one of the reasons why we suggest eating only half your exercise calories back.

NYKaren - You Rock! Losing a pound while on vacation is a feat. It sounds like you did a lot of walking. Looking forward to your photos.
KJ - The teenager texted me about his guitar lesson and to talk books.
Lisa - I'm glad your talk got rid of some tension.
Congratulations on the weight loss. This Dukan Diet seems to be working for you.
Beth - Congratulations on your weight loss.
Cheri - Doing the Happy Dance for you. It must be so exciting to have found your new home.
Rye - I had my eyebrow waxed once. "They" said it wouldn't hurt. "They" were wrong. I had my eyebrow micro-bladed. It is time for a touch up but I'm not wanting the pain of the temporary Grouch Marx look
Heather - Exciting New! Fingers crossed here.
Love that dance party!
Okie - thank you. I'm taking some new forms to the Doc tomorrow. I am still unsure as to which avenue it would be best to pursue.
Sue - That is one cute puppy?
Does your DH usually complain? Sometimes it seems as if the men in our lives just won't take proper care of themselves.
Becca - Yes, that was pretty much the extent of Greysyn's communication yesterday. He texted me today to tell about guitar lesson and ask if I had read the "Art of War" Should I have?
Pat - I'm sorry you were in hospital.
Felt a fraud at work. I did the minimum. Not much walking the sales floor as it worsens the pain.
Went to Alberta Works and got more forms. Doctor appointment tomorrow. My stomach is turning over, I hate asking Doctor to fill out forms. Sure hoping that she believes I deserve to be not working and can help me get to that. Jheri will come with me if she has her art all ready to go. There is a new flower on the easel and I am in love with that.
Stopped at my sister's. I gave in to her request. Oh well.
Didn't get a thing accomplished this afternoon/evening.
Talk to you tomorrow.

Loving the looking younger app.
I slept well last night because I was exhausted and I took a Nytol. Woke up to a sunny day. Yoga this morning. We are expecting snow this week - most of the country already has it - but we are a long way south and a bit west of the worst of it. It's coming from Siberia.
Now it's a waiting game. The estate agents will be chatting and the vendors will be considering our offer. They are busy today so don't expect to hear. We may have to go up another £5,000
Our problem is that every penny over the number we have left after selling our house has to come out of savings. DH is prepared to part with some of his and I can contribute a bit, but every penny means less to spend on enjoying ourselves! I know we are very lucky, believe me, but we still have to count the pennies. When it's actual cash, as opposed to sunk value in the house, it feels worse. I really want that house.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx9 -
Lanette my DH sent me the pics of Rome in the snow! How fun to see all of the sites we were just at, covered in snow. We feel lucky that our travel home wasn't interrupted by this freak storm but wouldn't it have been fun to hang out watching clergy throwing snowballs in St. Peter's square?!?! I'm still working on getting our pictures on the computer so I can post more shots, DH is more of the photog, me I just wander around trying to soak up the surroundings.
Speaking of self-portraits and apps for airbrushing away the wrinkles, well, no such thing for my Head Shot that was needed for my upcoming concert. I just had the pic taken with bags under my eyes from jet lag and my hair in need of a dyejob--I chose the best of about 10 takes, I just don't have the patience or foresight to fix it and said, print the best one, I can't look anymore. Ah well, concert is this coming Sunday and that will be it for this side gig--I am so over the whole experience!
Excited for all you househunters, I am a real lookie-louie when it comes to new homes, stressful yet exciting, best of luck for those close to closing deals and those still on the hunt

Tumble spent the morning with me, drive to vet for Scooter's rx, short walk at St. George point (brrr wind felt like it was from the snowbanks, not the sea!), another longer walk around Home Depot's parking lot. She did very well, was totally calm as cars drove past. She even made friends with a woman who wanted to photograph her. Of course the woman was smart enough to hunker down and let Tumble approach at her own pace. One of the trainers suggested getting Tumble's hair up so I can see her eyes, see if she's focused on me or elsewhere. Wrapped 3 little pigtails up with hot pink ear wrap. She looked so silly! Seems to have made a big difference. May try baby hair clips next...
Heather Promenade and sea at the end of your road? Fingers, toes and eyes crossed
Kylia Think I'll borrow your goal weight range. I too am petite in bone structure, but alas not in mass ;( as my knees remind me.
Okie Great weigh-in, yippee!
Lisa, Brava for the cathartic conversation. Horrified but not reflexively reacting, well done! Have you been meditating? 15 and 17, can really sympathize. We fostered Joe's nephews when they were 13, 14 and 16. Unfortunately we had never discussed/agreed on parenting philosophy/protocols so were complete flops. I comfort myself that for two years the boys were sheltered, fed, clothed, had dental/medical care, and were educated when we could get them to go to school. Down 11.5 lbs in one month! VERY well done. The "younger"pic doesn't look much different to me... you rock!
Machka thanks for the tour notes. Poisonous snakes? :noway: You are so good at listening to your body. Very well done!
Cheri what great news! Tell us about your new home?
Rye had a makeover once in high school that plucked my brows. Owwww! Never again. Like you, always aimed for clean and tidy. Unlike you the tidy never lasted long... and salad dressing is the enemy of clean always ends up on my "shelf". Shave legs only before massage therapist or Dr. appt, but hair now so sparse almost don't need to do that.
KJ Cleanest and most organized, yay you! and most thoughtful, those activity bins still wow me.
Sue in WA what a mischievous darling puppy!
Becca the bead bracelet motivation!
Mary in AZ Your hubs sure looks happy, as well he should! What a kettlebelle! How about some pics of the grand 'uns?
Margaret beautiful roses, great choice.
Pat in OH ((hugs)) are you home now?
Wendy I'd be swinging that kettlebell threateningly at the employees ... no really, how can you get through to them??? Grrr!
Barbie agree with Jake, Physical Therapists are the cheerfullest sadists ever. Agree with you too, the results of not doing PT are so much worse.
Joyce great story about your mom learning how to manage $$$. Glad your BP is doing well, hugs for those fingers.
Laura congrats on the great choices, you cutie you!
Sharon fingers X'd for your Dr. appt. It's Dr.s' jobs to fill in medical forms, you are not imposing on them.
Welcome anathywill, let us know what you want to be called and where you are?
Mindful hugs to all,

Good morning all! Happy Tuesday! Woke up this morning to DH warming up some food in the micro. His last meal. He has his first colonoscopy tomorrow He didn't read his instructions. The ones that say "no food the day before". He freaked a little bit; but I told him he is okay, because his procedure isn't until noon, tomorrow (he was eating at 5am). He is having some major anxiety over this. He has to stop some of his meds, and also the no food then no water after midnight tonight is making him nervous in regards to how much pain he will be in due to his RA. I didn't have any issues with mine; as a matter of fact, I found it pretty easy. BUT, I have a feeling he won't. He is a very "woe is me" personality. I look at a problem and say "I can do this!" He looks at the same problem and says "I can't do this!" Perhaps that is why we are still together. The yin and the yang. I can tell I am getting "old" and patience is thin, because his "I can't do this" attitude makes me want to smack him around a bit.
DJ-Your Moose party looks like a riot! You will have to share some pics of the event if you have the time.
Karen VA- How many calories you burn depends on how overweight you are. If you imagine, a 140 lb person carrying 80 pound dumbells while they are exercising/walking etc., you get a better idea of the amount of effort put forth for those of us trying to work our way down to healthy. It also makes the wear and tear on our joints more understandable. It also makes it easier to understand why it gets harder to get the weight off the closer you get to your goal weight. You have to keep challenging and changing up your exercise. (More weights, more reps, more distance, more speed)
Thinking of all of you lovely ladies as I begin today! New homes, relationship woes and bonding, daily grinding, keepin' on...Love you all and you inspire me daily

I've loaded photos from the first couple days of our cycling tour.
We flew over to Melbourne on Friday 16th, and then drove up to Bendigo on the Saturday for our 200 km audax cycling event which was held on the Sunday. Monday we wandered around Bendigo a little bit and then drove to Melbourne and dropped off our rental car. From then on, we were carfree! That evening, we wandered around Melbourne a little bit.
On Tuesday 20 February, we started our tour. First, we caught the train out to the start of the Great Victorian Rail Trail.
When we got there, we started riding. It was a hot sunny day, so about halfway along, we stopped for a bit of a break.
Our first day of touring was only about 40 km, but coming 2 days after the 215 km ride, plus being on gravel in the hot sun, it was a bit of a struggle. I actually wondered briefly about the wisdom of doing this particular tour. In just a couple days time, the length of the rides would increase!
However, we made it to the end of our first day, got some much needed cold drinks (coke) and citrus ice creams, and felt much better. We relaxed for a while in our cabin watching the Olympics, then went out for dinner and followed it by a walk through the local wetlands. When we lived in that area, we'd never visited the wetlands so we figured we finally would! It was lovely in there with lots of birds and one brown snake. Poisonous, of course.
The next day we were on our way to Alexandra. First it was up and through the Cheviot Tunnel ...
It is quite a long tunnel and gets very dark soon after entering, so we were glad of our lights.
From there we descended and then climbed again to the lookout over the Alexandra area, and then descended into Alexandra.
We wandered the main street of town, checking everything out. I liked this ... a kangaroo made from a bicycle wheel.
Then we visited friends we hadn't seen in some time, we cycled roads we haven't cycled in a few years, and later in the evening we rode out to spend the evening with more friends.
We do miss that part of the world. I'm not sure if we would want to move back there or not. I think if we came into some money or retired, it would be a very good location ... but it is a bit difficult to find work there.
Day 3 was a longer day. First we cycled to another friend's place and she showed me how to spin! I wasn't very good at it, but I could see how someone might get into it.
Then the route took us mostly, gradually uphill to Mansfield. Fortunately, it was a little bit cooler and somewhat overcast. One highlight of this leg of the journey is the long bridge across Lake Eildon.
Since the trail is gravel/chert, and since it was still fairly warm and humid, what you can't see in the photo below is that my legs are covered in dust/dirt which puffs up when we cycle through it, and sticks to my sweaty legs.

Day 4 was the longest day, but there was quite a bit of downhill which was fun.
We had a nice breakfast in Mansfield and then got on the trail. It wasn't long until we arrived at the Bonnie Doon bridge over Lake Eildon.
Then down into Yarck, and back up the Cheviot Tunnel again and down into Yea.
Day 5 was a short day again, and our last day on the trail. The trail at this end doesn't have as nice a surface as the rest. It's more gravelly and soft so it made for a bit more work. Also, although it looked like it was going to rain at any moment, it was hot and humid.
We did stop at a hotel we used to see when we drove into Melbourne. A few years ago, it was a beautiful, historical, busy place that served lunches and teas and all sorts. But now, it looks half abandoned, and they certainly weren't serving lunches. We went in anyway to get something to drink and were sold two cans of coke for ... wait for it ... $12!! I check Trip Advisor, and it looks like the place started to go downhill about 2 years ago. That's sad.
But much of the trail follows the Goulburn River so it's scenic. And before long, we were back in Tallarook where we started.
We were there well in time to catch the early train back into Melbourne when an announcement came that it was cancelled. Oh dear. When they cancel trains they replace them with coaches but coaches don't take bicycles. Our only choice was to wait for the next train and hope it would turn up.
Meanwhile a man and lady came to the station house, after a bit, we started chatting with them. Apparently they rent the place as a "holiday home" because they like trains and like getting out into the country. And the town likes to have them there because they come out every couple weeks keep the place up so it looks nice. He told us all sorts of things about the history of the station ... very interesting.
Our train did come and we were on our way to Melbourne. That evening, we went for a walk to look for a place to eat and found a lovely little "alleyway" lined with restaurants and chose a great Italian place. Lots of atmosphere ... people watching, music, and all.
The next day we flew home.

Machka, how did the spinning go?
I wasn't very good at it. It's a bit like patting your head while rubbing your tummy. I'd get going with the foot pedal and the wheel would be going the right direction, then all of a sudden it would go in reverse. Finally we got onto using the wool and that went all right but mine was quite a bit thicker and coarser than what my friend was doing.
Like anything, it would take some practice!

Haven't heard anything yet.
We were lucky to outrun the snow yesterday, behind us it settled and there have been lots of accidents. Snow here might arrive later this week. DH has just gone out to buy fresh veg, fruit and milk. We have bread in the freezer.
If we do get to Hove our bread bill will go up. Just eaten the "caramelised" garlic bread for lunch with left over turkey burgers. Very, very garlicky! Also brought back seeded sourdough. They cost a fortune!! Also give your jaw plenty of exercise.
Trying to cope with feeling a bit anxious, but comforting myself with the thought that DH doesn't want to let it slip through our fingers. I'm a very impatient person and hate ambiguity and uncertainty.
Perhaps my run this afternoon will clear my brain.

After some anxious waiting, I finally got my mark for my course. It was meant to be published on Feb 21, but what came up online was "Withheld". I found out everyone's mark was withheld, and finally today we got a formal letter informing us that "a change has been made" to our results, and I've passed quite comfortably.
I suspect that the marks went to a review. The in-course marks among the students I talked to were good, as was mine. But the exam was only vaguely related to the course material. I wasn't sure I passed it, and neither were quite a number of other students. I know there were complaints made ... so I suspect that the exam mark was looked at and adjusted. Whew!
I'm into my next course and have received my first assignment late tonight. I'll look at it tomorrow.
Both yesterday and today were days of long walks plus today I climbed 12 flights of stairs. Getting back into the stair climbing again! I'll probably feel it tomorrow.
And I've got back into logging my food again too.
I had gained 1 kg ... even after all that cycling! Or maybe because of it. I had sort of created a perfect storm situation. We gain water weight in all sorts of situations including: extra exercise, heat, lots of sun exposure to our skin (especially sunburn, which I avoided, but I did tan), and air travel.
However, this morning I had already lost 0.5 kg, so that's good.
Yesterday I just cut back on what I was eating a bit, and today I was under my calorie limit, so things should start heading in the right direction again.

My early walking friend has a meeting this morning and won't be walking with me so the dogs and I will be alone and I can finish listening to the podcast I started earlier which is an interview with Dan Harris who is one of my heroes.
At 9:30 my other walking friend and I will go for a walk around the neighborhood for about 90 minutes with no dogs.
After that, I have a pile of paperwork to deal with.
