Less Alcohol - March 2018- One day at a Time

Never had Polar seltzer until someone posted about it. Whoever that was thank you! It's a great 'fixing dinner' beverage to replace the glass of wine. The lime is refreshing.3

Day 7 AF! I can't believe how well I'm sleeping and I love waking up feeling good. :-) I figure I've saved about 4200 calories this week from my former bottle of wine a day habit. My scale reflects it. Yeah! How many calories have you avoided by not drinking?9

An absolutely disgusting amount if I actually tried to think about it. Haha.
Especially when you factor in that I usually eat unhealthy food when I drink5 -
@crazykatlady820 wow! That many days is awesome. And yes alcohol is an anesthetic and not a very good one. Glad you realized it as did I !!! I often would have a drink to soothe my physical aches and pains as well as psychological! From the history of anesthesia:
“Alcohol was also used, not very effectively, during the pre-Ether days. Though it can blunt the central nervous system, it does not provide good pain relief. It also does not provide effective amnesia. Alcohol was then paired with opium in a solution called laudanum. Though this solution had analgesic properties (pain relief), it was often abused. Many weren’t aware of it’s addictive potential.”6 -
Hello all. I had a mostly dry weekend. Just a few drinks Sunday evening before bed. I'm still relishing in the fact that my clothes are fitting me better and better. I'm trying to use this as my motivating force. I've found that the more I step away from the bottle, the more sober days I have and enjoy them, the more now I'm wanting it. I couldn't help but to take a minute this morning while I was getting ready to appreciate that I didn't wake up with a headache, feeling like crap or even puking and I haven't for a month and a half now. I really like this lifestyle so much better!5

I like looking back at my food diary and seeing all of those blank entries under "Adult Beverages".8

@thetaminator - How many calories have you avoided by not drinking?
Sadly before I really became alcohol aware...between 3000 & 7000 weekly.

I see myself moving towards this new habit. Alcohol as a reward after a good hard cardio binge.
Oh wait a minute. That isn't a new habit. That is my old habit that morphed into daily drinking.
Alcohol as a reward, ugh, it is sludge.
Probably will be AF today.
Temperature is shaping up to ok. I think I will ride my neighborhood hill repeat pattern.
I call it my "paper route."
Four repeats of the paper route is 1000 of climb. That takes about an hour.9 -
I'm noticing that meeting my alcohol goals somehow encourages me to meet other goals, especially those having to do with weight loss and exercise. I figure if I can accomplish not drinking Mon-Thurs I can do X (limit chocolate! walk every day!). It's just great to feel good about yourself instead of disappointed in yourself when you go to sleep at night!10

Fellow cyclist here and yes this was me to a TEE! I am ramping up my cycling lately and I see a clear connection in the the exercise and drinking! So far so good but I am aware of how they were previously so connected. It will be challenging when it warms up and we stop at the brewery after long rides. I definetly need a plan to address this situation. I think taking a recovery drink with me to have while others are having their beer is what I will need to do.

I did pretty good this past weekend for me. I did drink on Friday night but kept it to a minimum and wasn't hungover on Saturday. I don't even think about drinking on the weeknights anymore. My sister didn't feel too good after drinking last Friday night so we will probably not even drink this Friday. I'm going to a concert this coming up Sunday so I might have a beer or two while there if someone buys them for me, otherwise it doesn't matter!4
-
I'm on day 4 of no drinking. I celebrated getting something at work a little too much last week. I won't be drinking for at least a few weeks.5
-
wine is my go-to! I usually drink about a bottle a week (a glass or so after work with my dinner). I haven't bought any the last 2 weeks, so I haven't had anything to drink. I am probably going to drink all of my calories this weekend though... I am going out with girlfriends Friday night for happy hour. Then Sunday, we are having a crawfish boil, so I am going to get MichUltra instead of a carb heavy beer.2

I feel the same way. I am walking a lot more everyday. I now get over 10,000 steps daily, and tonight I have nearly 12,000. That never happened when I had a couple of glasses of wine. I am staying within my calories goal. I have also noticed I observe nature more closely like the stars twinkling or the whispy clouds. It's like I take the time to look more closely at the world around me. Plus, meditation has helped me a lot to calm down when stressed. Insight timer app is awesome for this!7 -
I just got back from Kroger and usually I would either go down the wine aisle and grab a (big) bottle or else I would have to lecture myself to stay away from it. Go figure, today I didn't even think about that aisle. I got all my stuff for lasagna and didn't even think about the red wine I would pretend was for my sauce. Now that is a massive change. BOOM! Go me!11

So much positivity here! I’ve gained so much from this amazing group. As an English teacher, I have seen too much harm from censorship. I wish you all well and will continue to feel a connection with like-minded and non-judgmental people fighting the good fight. Will continue to draw strength from this group when in Italy next week. I am perhaps wrong but what I saw was a well-meaning and kind soul go down on social media and I feel I would be wise to withdraw from a group that has been a lifeline for me since Jan. 1. Thank you, Julie!7

Got some good exercise. 850 or so of climb. Maybe 500 cal. But alas... 50 ml of spirit. But that actually is another notch of reduction for me.3

I realized my thank you to Julie could be read as sarcasm. That’s the problem with written communication. I mean a sincere thank you to Julie for the awesome community you have created. In reading each other’s posts I urge putting the most compassionate spin possible on them. As the divine Mary Gauthier observes, we can all “use a little mercy now.”5

When you put it this way, makes total sense why I gained close to 10 lbs over the past year !#$4 -

In for March! I work so hard during the week on my eating and exercise and then completely blow it with weekend drinking and subsequent eating, so stupid! St Patty's Day has always been a big drinking holiday for me but with it being on Saturday this year, hopefully it will lose some of its allure, lol. A lot of the fun is taking the day off work!5

YES, if I were only consuming the alcohol in each drink it would not be that high. Although chocolate martinis are beautiful to look at. They can be over 400 calories per drink. Not that this was my only drink of choice, but it seems the nicer the drink the more calories it has. That 400 calories is over what my dinner calories should be.
"I would rather eat them than drink them". Hey that would be a good slogan on a tea shirt, or mug or kitchen towel.
Welcome @joshkadams
