March 2018 Running Challenge

@Teresa502
How: one foot in front of the other...LOL
Why: My schedule lined up with my buddy who's training for 2 of the same races as me and that's our normal spot. Plus, in that one mile loop, we get 34 feet of incline per loop, so we get uphill, downhill and flat all in one area and last, mental training.
Nice running BTW2 -
March Running Totals (miles)
3/1 – 5.57 easy
3/2 – rest day
3/3 – 16.09 paced run
3/4 – 7.22 easy with hills
3/5 – rest day
3/6 – 6.21 easy with fast finish
3/7 – 6.60 group run
3/8 – 6.24 easy with fast finish
3/9 – rest day
3/10 – 18.07 paced run
March running total to date – 66.00
Nominal challenge goal: 180 miles
Real goals: Build base. Work toward being able to run 26.2 miles by Patriots' Day.
Today's notes – Too far behind to catch up, so just a drive by status today. Got a bit of snow last night, nothing serious; but enough to be worth wearing trail shoes (Saucony Peregrines) to a paced run at Mendon Ponds Park. Mendon features lots of what I call rolling hills, though apparently one of the folks I ran with defines rolling hills differently than I do. I think they're a lot of up and down for not much net change in elevation; she thinks they're small hills and some that we ran today are too big to call rolling. I said they're rolling, but they roll irregularly. Whatever.
I love Mendon for running. The off-road scenery looks a lot like the background of the photo @JessicaMcB posted a few posts above this one. Temp rose from 28º F (-2º C) to perhaps the freezing mark as we ran. The roads were clear, but there was a coating of snow on most of the shoulders, and we had to run a lot of shoulders due to traffic. The first 10 miles was the 15K Spring Forward race route plus an out and back to get to 10 miles. Then we had an odd 3-part out and back to add 4, 2, and 2 miles.
My calves were really feeling it when we went down a moderately steep decline back to the parking lot to finish. But it felt great to actually run 18 miles today. I was nominally responsible for holding an 8:30 pace, but it's pretty challenging to hold a steady pace on rolling hills; we averaged 8:21 by my watch, paused for a water stop and a break after the first 10, but not paused for an episode of a runner needing to tie her shoe.
Part of staying that close to target was due to my co-pace leader, who doesn't even think of herself as a real pace leader. A few times, we had a recurring conversation:
Her: Kevin, you're going 7:50.
Me: Oops. Can I take you with me to Boston?
Her: Take a recording of me telling you to check your watch every mile.
I'm not sure I'll actually get a 20 mile run in before Boston. I will treat next week as a cutback in total mileage, with an 8K race on Saturday in Virginia Beach instead of a long run. Two weeks from today would be a good date to attempt 20 miles; if I get them in, 9.3 of them will be the Spring Forward 15K. The plan is to use it to practice pace control for Boston, which would make 20 miles possible; today I was reminded of exactly how the hills on that course are. They're no big deal at an 8:30 pace, but they can be pretty challenging if I'm trying to maintain a true 15K race pace.
After today's run, I saw that my average and max heart rates stayed lower than they typically do on my solo runs. Yeah, this is expected. Running slower is the way to survive a marathon. Now I just need to convince myself to run slow enough until I get to the top of Heartbreak Hill, without having a good measure of exactly how fast "slow enough" is.
2018 races:
February 17, 2018 Freezeroo #5 (Valentines Run "In Memory of Tom Brannon" 8 Mile) (Greece, NY) finished in 54:48
February 24, 2018 Freezeroo #6 (White House Challenge 4.4 mile) (Webster, NY) finished in 28:46
March 17, 2018 USATF Masters 8K (Shamrock 8K, Virginia Beach, VA)
March 24, 2018 Spring Forward 15K (Mendon, NY)
April 16, 2018 Boston Marathon (Hopkinton, MA)6 -
@KatieJane83 I have no idea why my phone auto corrected to that user but I did mean you obviously lololl
@MobyCarp I too would like to borrow your pace pal btw. I basically want someone faster than me to chase me for the first third of every race shouting "STAAAAAAHP IT!". Have you ever considered Canada Kevin1 -
@MobyCarp I think we all need someone like her.
With your experience I think you'll be fine at Boston. If all else fails, go by the credo of ultra runners like me, who aren't in @JessicaMcB 's league, if you think you're going out slow enough, slow down. As an added incentive, just remember that 2-3 days before Boston I'll be spending 30-34 hours slowly reminding myself how stupid I am.3 -
Everyone talking about (and posting pictures) of running in snow is making me jealous. We had our first 90 degree F day today (along with another pollen alert). I guess summer is here already.... WHAAAA!!!!

Blisters at the end of my second toes (on both feet) are now showing up at every run over 10 miles. I now have mecha-calluses on the end of these toes and my toenails are in a constant state of purple/black/non-existence. I have tried to Google the answer but I am getting conflicting information— My shoes are too small or too big; I scrunch my toes or they are hitting the top of the shoe....etc.
Does anyone have experience with this? Is it my shoes or my running form? I have been fit-tested at a specialty running store but their suggestions don’t work.
Also, the smart-wool anti-blister socks feel like I am running over hot coals. They are so hot! Do they make socks with no toe seams? Maybe that’s the problem?
I am worried that these blisters over blisters will eventually cause foot issues...
Your feet expand when you run. So a shoe that is slightly under sized but comfy when you are in the store will be to small when you are running. You might need to go up a 1/2 size.
BUT your socks very well could be the problem. I wear Under Armor Heat Gear running socks in the summer, and Darn Tough wool socks in cold weather. Both work very well BUT as the UA's wear out I start to get blisters. I try to replace them before they get to that point. I would DEFINIITLY consider changing your sock to a running specific one.
Yes, my running shoes are a 1/2 size too big. They tried to convince me to go up a full size but I was walking right out of them. I will check out the Under Armor socks. Thanks!0 -
I have finally succumbed to the pollen (or maybe it was the other dogs at the vet when I took my dogs for their shots), and my head feels like it has an inflated balloon inside of it. I had hoped some meds would help me feel well enough to run this afternoon, but no such luck. I am going to get up early tomorrow and do a long run while the dew still had all the pollen stuck to the ground and not flying in my face.

15 km Westbrook to Shaftsbury trail and return.
One of those days where I had to stop 3 times in the first 2 km to adjust my shoe. To tight, then to loose, finally just right. At about the 3 km mark hit a 300m stretch of shiny black ice on a slight downhill grade that was interesting to navigate. It was even more fun on the return loop when it was a little warmer and had a thin layer of melt water on it, so I did a little Ice Dancing. Never went down so no Black eye's, forehead & nose abrasions or broken rib photo's to share.
Turned into a beautiful day and it felt so good to finally get some real distance in. It's the early spring-hint of spring where you need coat, gloves, toque, neck warmer and tights when you start. By the time I finished I could have been in a long sleeve top, shorts and ear band. Managed a nice kick ( for me ) on tired legs in the last 4-500m got down close to 5:09 min/km and 172 cadence. My normal Plod has been around 6:40/km and 160 cadence most of this winter due to under training and kitten cold. ie go slow to avoid injuries.

NEW 5K PR TODAY!!!
Returned to the site of my first ever 5k (last year) and ran my best race yet! This was my second nonstop run, and this time I was much better at the pinch-and-pour at the aid stations than last weekend. Plus, it was sprinkling rain, so dousing wasn't such a concern.
YAY!!! Great job!

@RespectTheKitty Yay! You live!1 -
No run today, had to leave town for a meeting, still hoping for a 20+ mile run in the next couple days, then next week is my first Half-Marathon race ever.5

Finally have a chance to sit down and update my miles. I haven't even been over here to read about all the awesome runs everyone has been having. As you can see from my miles I am way behind and I can thank work for that. I have just been crazy busy again. I am going to have to pick it up if I want to hit my 100 mile goal though!
It is raining here today but I did not let that keep me from getting most of what I planned for today. Planned 8 and got 7.40 wet miles. The rain was blowing in my face on the outbound and I think my favorite Nike run jacket has had it. Within the first 2 miles its was pretty soaked and for whatever reason the sleeves were like water magnets catching and soaking up the rain and sticking to my arms. My watch kept stopping the workout, I think because it was so wet. When I turned around I stopped in the bathroom and took off my jacket and wrapped it around my waist, dried my arms and turned my watch to the inside of my wrist where it wouldn't get as wet. All in all it ended up being a really great run and it just felt so good to be out there running after 2 days of not being able to go.
Does anyone know if there is a spray or something I can put on the jacket to make it more water resistant again? It is the best jacket with lots of pockets but is a good 5-6 years old and I am sure they no longer make it.
I am off the Seattle tomorrow to spend the week with my daughter. While we now have rain here it is not supposed to rain there. Hopefully I will have time to fit in some runs before or after work.
Now to go read what everyone has been up to!

Trying to catch up on posts, but y'all! There is so much awesomeness in this thread!Did parkrun (5 km) today in 27:10.
My fastest time since my PB 11 months ago. Yay!
Congrats on the great run!BruinsGal_91 wrote: »Finished my Shamrock Shuffle 5k in 28:24 which was good enough to get me third place in my age-group. Way to go! Great run, hot coffee, new shoes ... Sounds like a winning combo to me!My Friday night run started at a little after 9:30pm, and continued until 3am with a small stop to take in a gel. The weather was awesome; light cloud cover and warm temps in the 60s, with a nice southerly breeze, certainly made for a pleasant night run. This time, there were absolutely no skunks...not even a whiff. But bunnies? So. Many. Bunnies. It's like it's almost Easter or something.

I so envy your night run! Some of my favorite runs have been in the evening/twilight hours.1 -
@shanaber you might be able to find a scotch gaurd product that you can spray on the jacket. We've used it ages ago on furniture, but turned out it caused a bit of contact dermatitis on the kiddos. That was 27 years ago, so I'd have to conclude there's a superior product out there today.
Maybe your local dry cleaners would know, if Google doesn't.0 -

Distance PR today. I was aiming for 13.5km but my Fitbit and Strava are in disagreement. Fitbit says 13.6 and Strava says 14.0, both via phone GPS. I was tracking my distance via the Fitbit. Oops. (Based on the maps, Strava looks more correct.)
We are in the midst of a thaw. I wore capris, tank top and a light jacket today and was good except for the last 2 km or so as the sun set and temperature started dropping. The entire run felt fantastic, just a good day to run.
In any case, feeling more confident about being able to complete the half marathon next month. I think I will go shoe shopping this week though. I definitely need to look at sizing as I've got a toenail that looks about ready to fall off...

Thanks @Elise4270 and @PastorVincent - I will check on scotch guard products and Never Wet!
I was going to recommend Nikwax as well - you can get a spray and it is specially designed for outdoor clothing. Try your nearest outdoor activity store for help.0 -

Nice running BTW
I wanted to do a 50K the year I turned 50. As I was looking at the different offerings, I noticed a lot consisted of 1, 3 or 5 mile loops. I just couldn't wrap my head around a 1-mile loop that many times. I ended up choosing a 5 mile loop in a park near Dayton, Ohio. My hat is off to you!2 -
Got out for a run this morning... 2.8km walking and running.7

@simcon1 and @girlinahat I will check out Nikwax. I am sure REI should have it and if not there is always Amazon! I will definitely let you know how it works @PastorVincent.
On the stretchy shoe laces that @_nikkiwolf_ recommended. I definitely like the Nathan ones better. They were easy to put on my shoes, easy to get adjusted and work great. No problem with the top of my foot or my foot falling asleep. The Xtenex were hard to get in my shoes and hard to adjust. I could not get them so that the pressure was off on the top of my foot. I haven’t given up on them though and am trying some different lacing patterns with them. Note they really hurt if they snap and hit a finger or your hand when putting them in or taking them out.3 -
@shanaber the Nikwax duo that @simcon1 is what I have used in the past with my Gore-Tex and Arctrex outdoor gear. Had good luck with them. The one thing I do remember is I got a better result if I washed the gear twice before using the product.
First wash with a mild detergent.
2nd wash No detergent - more of a super long rinse to remove any remnants of detergent.
Then did the Nikwax wash routine as described on the instructions.
Also I seem to remember using the longer wash cycle time to give it a little extra time in the water before going into rinse cycle.
After you have completed the Nikwax wash I recommend you do an empty machine cycle to remove any remnants of the Nikwax from the machine. Would hate to get it on other cloths that aren't designed for it by accident.4
