What nobody tells you about losing weight

What nobody tells you: That there will be times when you have low grade hunger while releasing weight. It's not the same as starving but a low grade hunger, especially in the evenings. You're fine all day long with your 3 meals but directly after eating dinner, this low grade hunger comes upon you in the form of old cravings.
That your tolerance and indifference for cravings and triggers is a muscle that will grow stronger with use.

I never realized how much my eating/exercise habits influenced my family. Since I started the healthy lifestyle my 7 year old has started ordering water (like mommy) when we go out to eat instead of her usual chocolate milk. Around the house she'll drink water and ask if her snack is a "healthy choice." My husband and kids join me for nightly walks together and my daughters always asking how many steps we've taken and how many more we need. It's crazy how focusing on making myself healthier has carried over to my family.50

My poor boobs. I have barely started my weight loss and they are already starting to deflate.
I am irrationally concerned about the potential loose skin. If I wasn’t motivated by my health to lose weight, the fear of loose skin would probably be enough to discourage me from losing it. Ridiculous, I know.
Wrinkles…I think the fat was filling them in before…
I can relate to the mixed responses from friends and family, and the making new friends part, even though it has only been about 2 months. And I am surprised by the “subtle support” I guess you could call it. For example, co-workers who I am friendly with but would not call friends, giving the cold-shoulder to people who are trying to push junk food on me or they turn down junk food that is offered to them while they are in my office area. And because I started losing weight so quickly (my inflammation went down very quickly with my new diet, making it look like I lost a lot of weight very quickly) a couple of people did mention that I looked great, but they hoped whatever I was doing I was doing safely. I really appreciate that they were more concerned about my health than the way I looked.
I realized how much of the socializing I did revolved around food and sedentary activities, whereas now (and before I gained the weight) there is so much more activity involved in my social and down time. Looking back, I can’t believe just how drastic the change, without even realizing it was happening!
Unlike a lot of people who find healthy eating to be expensive and time consuming, I have always found the opposite, and just like the socializing, I am amazed how much time and money I had been spending around meal consumption without really realizing it. I have saved a lot on meal related expenses over the last two months without even trying, and I have stocked the freezer with fish and steak.
@cjchelli The loose skin won't show up overnight. If you start to become uncomfortable with it at any point, you can always stop losing, but I think that you won't want to once you get to that point.5 -

But isn't it the best feeling, ever? I love it when my children ask to go out on walks, runs, bike rides.
Last week, I walked a couple of miles to collect my son from cadets and just mentioned on the way back home that I was just under 40,000 steps for the day (well, I needed just under 4k steps). Once we were home and my son had changed out of his uniform, he said that he wanted to go on a two mile run before bed, just so that I'd hit that 40k.
And we did. 40, 161 steps. The last time I hit more than 40k steps was last August.
And my children also are more diligent (well, with the exception of my 18 year old daughter who just doesn't eat properly, end of) about what and, more importantly, how much they eat.
It's wonderful that they are growing up with a good attitude towards food and exercise.

Mentioned a lot by others but I did not expect the attitude of some people who need to lose weight. Instead of being inspired, they are almost offended. It's like you are throwing their failure in their face just by being around them even if you say nothing about weight loss.
I did not expect to feel younger, just less concerned about aging too quickly.
I am more outgoing. I never really thought about how being self conscious about how I looked affected me. I wasn't that much out of what has become the norm in the US, but it did bother me.
I am more active even in things I could do fine before.
One I don't like relates back to the first point. I do not say anything, but I find myself making silent judgements about others who claim to be trying to lose weight but are making no progress. I chastise myself when I notice I am doing it.

I totally get this! My best friend has been a lot more withdrawn lately and very catty towards me. She admits that she'd like to lose ~70lbs and that she wants to go running with me. I started texting her when I went out for runs but there was always a new excuse. Idk how to solve it or if it's even possible at this point16 -

I must be in the minority of women pleased that their boobs basically disappeared. Have hated them since the age of 11, when my spiteful sisters made a comment about them that has stayed with me for nearly four decades (some things you just never forget).
But those over-sized and out-of-proportion boobs are on the way out. My smaller size means that bras are easier to find and they look better with my smaller self.
My dear sisters, on the other hand, have been out of my life for over a decade. Between them, they pretty well ruined my childhood. I finally realised, after I had my own children, that my lovely sisters were an unnecessary and unwanted evil in my life. Things are much more pleasant without them giving me grief.
@Madwife2009
Oh no, you're not alone in that...I love my tiny breasts now. I am truly an A cup and love the fact that I don't worry about a button popping open on my shirts, or not being able to zip a jacket up. Working out is easier without the bouncy melons that I used to have. So is finding a comfortable position to sleep in. Swimsuit tops and even shirts don't look risque if you have no cleavage. I would never want to have large breasts ever again.
I hope, hope, hope, hope I lose mine. I have a small frame and not small boobs. My hope is that when I get down to my final goal weight (which I'd not managed to get to before I got derailed by health issues and what I thought was a plateau that wasn't really a plateau just a discouragement pit) that they're manageable. If not, I know insurance will pay to fix it, but only if I am at a healthy BMI.
As far as what no one tells you about losing weight... that you can fit between parked cars. In California, parking lot spaces are tiny. I always think, "I CAN'T FIT," and go the long way around. It's taken a LONG time to realize that, why yes, I can fit between the cars. And hey, I can even do the "too small" car shimmy between cars too! Sometimes, I'm foiled by mirrors, but as I never intend to achieve a 3-inch-wide-hip... I'm okay with this.
I realized this as I carted my dragon out to my car from my work cube and realized... the dragon was wider than me! I showed my awesome, however, and hefted him up over my head and shimmied through the parked cars on a more direct route to my car.
#awesome!7 -

I wish my feet would shrink is both directions. But I went from a 14D to a 14 Narrow and no one makes 14 Narrow.6 -

It took a lot of weight loss, but eventually lost almost a full shoe size. I had to lose about 150lbs for that. They narrow first.2 -

@kalahmarii this is a real thing. I'm sorry that it's happening, but maybe start looking for ways to hang out with her outside of working out - she'll come to you when she's ready.14 -
Try googling "capsule wardrobe" for ideas about how to assemble a versatile starter wardrobe in your new size -- this is my plan when I lose another 40#.13

I have a couple of pairs of slip on shoes for summer. They sort of fit but sound like flip flops because they aren't tight enough to keep my heel down. My laced shoes have been okay but they are pulled together a bit close.2 -

I'm the other side of this. I always have an excuse when it comes to exercising. I really don't enjoy it whatsoever. My friend stopped bothering asking if I wanted to go to the gym with her lol I just don't like it.
If your friend wants to lose 70lbs let her know she doesn't have to exercise to do that. I thought exercise was the only way I would be able to lose weight so I never bothered looking further into it. Counting calories alone was enough for me to lose 100lbs.

Same thing happened to me. One of my (now formerly) best friends lives about 800 miles away. We would talk on the phone at least 3-4 times a week with constant texts back and forth. I used to be the fat one and she the slim one. Fast forward, I went to visit her last summer after I dropped my initial massive weight (about 150lbs) and she had just had a baby (4 months prior). She gain a lot during pregnancy, but I don't care, a friend is a friend. Before that visit we would take a million pictures together and hang out doing whatever. Last visit, we took a grand total of 2, she "hated her smile" in every one and insisted on deleting them. Since then, she has called me on the phone 3 times in almost a year, I somehow always call when she's busy and doesn't pick up.
I didn't realize exactly what was going on until I saw a comment on FB. I posted a picture of myself finishes my first ever 5k, and she said it's "not polite to brag".
It sucks. But I don't know if it's jealousy or if she was just never a real friend to begin with and only hung around me to make her look better.
Sad that when someone loses or gains a lot of weight that thier "friends" seem to no longer be friends.

Thank you, and yes I am still me. Life goes on. And I'm still working on the running, trying to get half decent times. I think I was keeping pace with an elderly snail the last kilometer of my 5k, but I did it, didn't stop once, no walking either.28 -

Great job on the weight loss and of course your 5K!
Sorry your"friend" has behaved this way. Something similar has happened to me and it was upsetting too. I think when one does well with their goals and takes care of themselves, it forces others around to take a look at how they have been treating themselves and it's not always good. I think their own guilt and frustration often comes out as jealousy. Hang your head high and just be happy and healthy.4 -

I've totally told her that most of it is food, but I think she sees exercise as easier than counting calories and she asked me to make sure she goes running. I dont think that's going to happen though. Hopefully she realizes how simple it all is! Congrats on your loss!7 -

Yes!! I crave so much savoury/salty food, and I never used to, maybe it's all the exercise. Chocolate was my go to, and I now find myself barely wanting it as it just makes me feel gross. Interestingly enough.. if I really want some salt, I'll just have an olive or two straight from the jar better than a bag of chips I suppose.4 -

Personally, I think chocolate recipes have changed in the past several years. They don’t really melt in your mouth anymore. It’s more like this waxy substance with chocolate flavor.15 -

Sounds like you found out your "friend's" true colors. She must be pretty jealous to write a comment like that on FB. I'm sorry that you lost what you thought was a good friend...it hurts. She was never a true friend..and you are better off moving on to find friends who are your cheerleaders.

I can't wait for this. I've been a big girl for a long time but I still catch a glimpse of my reflection or see a picture someone has taken of me and don't expect to be as big as I am. I'm not sure how it still catches me off guard but it does. It will be so nice when I am nicely surprised by those moments instead of them making me sad.27 -
This one is not a real positive thing about me, but I find I have less sympathy for people who complain about their weight and claim they just can't lose weight. In very rare circumstances that might be true, but it is usually pretty clear that the problem is lack of commitment and/or discipline.22

I love the fact I have lost 10lbs 207 down to 197 but no when at work (office job) my butt hurts when sitting for long periods of time. So I naturally stand up and work. Never happened when I was chubby.6
