KetoneKaren wrote: »Rori I am one of the less fortunate here who have not had the pleasure of meeting you in person. Your last post gives me a lovely picture of the person you are, though. I think you must be a person who is organized, who knows how to plan activities and contingencies, and who has an optimistic and practical outlook. We were both in the Denver airport at the same time a couple of years ago, but neither of us knew it. Darn it.
Karen in Virginia dragging a bit from another busy shift at work last night
Wow! Karen, I'm humbled. Yeah, I'd agree on being pegged as optimistic and practical. I have a very simple life. How far away from Vienna, VA are you? I have a dear niece living there and we're toying with notion of visiting the area while DH can still enjoy sightseeing in D.C. And of course, if you are ever back in my fair state, give a holler. Always enjoy meeting you MFP ladies, and your remarkable spouses.
Okie: Your streak and consistency are so inspiring. I'd be thrilled to be able to complete a 10 minute mile. I do two miles in 25 mins on the treadmill. But pesky foot issues prevent me from making this a daily routine.
Katla: Hope you get the campsite you've reserved.
Michele: Hope Vince can find the real cause of his discomfort.
Missing Joyce. And D.J. If you gals are lurking, please let us know you're okay.
Hugs to all who need them.

Six years ago Jake came into the house one day after cutting the grass and said, "I'm done with yard work. Let's move to a house with an almost no care yard". We called a real estate agent that day and in less than six months we had moved to the house we're in now. Some of our friends asked us why we didn't just hire someone to do the yard work and stay where we were, but this has been a much better decision. Our housing costs are lower in this house on a small lot and we're only paying for work that has to be done on the roof. There's enough yard so we can sit outside with the dogs and enough room for me to do the bit of yard puttering that I want to do.9

Just saying hi!1 -
Peach/Carol – Do you remember Diane Harrison? Her sister, Glenda and her significant other, have gone all over the world on cruises … they LOVE it! Been to Italy, Greece, Egypt, China, Australia, Russia, and I can’t remember all the other places they’ve gone on ‘short’ one around the Bahamas and that area and the Caribbean. I enjoy all the pictures she posts on FB. My oldest sister and BnL are going on one to Cuba. It’ll be an ‘educational’ tour – and I think they have to take 2 classes on the cruise for it to be considered ‘educational’.
Barbara – I gave in and decided to use the magnesium citrate – it worked; but, I thought it was never going to be any other color than really dark. Go for my yearly physical and the nurse brought in one of those stool sample kits. I told her they were going to be doing my colonoscopy over – UGH! She went and talked to the MD; he still wanted me to have it. I got all my Pre-op tests run today and they should have the results by tomorrow; then all I will have to do is pick them up so the hospital can get them. I still have to go to the Pre-op appointment because of being put under for the LINX procedure. I was pretty miserable; one reason I took the M/C – because I knew it would work. Surgeon wanted me to not be constipated by the time the LINX procedure is done. I think 2 days of prep and 2 (actually 3) days of liquid diet will do it for me. I should lose nearly 10lbs at that rate. NOT that it would be the way I would want to do it. I’m thinking … ‘hey, white wine is a clear liquid …’; but, I also know I need to double check with the Surgeon’s office first.
Barbie – Heather – I hope I ‘saved’ the story on this saying with a ‘new twist’ … lf I can find it I will send it by PM. Don’t want someone to thing and say that it should not be posted if they somehow think/thought it was too religious or political … it could probably be a little of both.
PreciousPerla – I think if you click on their name under their avatar; it will give you a place to send a message and maybe they can send one to you. If MFP has not changed it. I’m getting so frustrated with FB and how it seems to blink on and off and I have to sign back in it and then I am totally on a different set of posts. I tried to ‘share’ something with someone and suddenly it blinked and I had to scroll down through what seemed like pages and pages of posts to find it. Did that 3x … GGGRRRrrrrr!!!!!
Tell us a little about yourself, name you prefer to be called, locations (general or specific), family, hobbies, goals, that sort of thing so that we can ‘get to know you better’.
Pip – You and Kirby need to be careful. Kirby needs you! You need him. I am glad that you weren’t hurt – scared $#*Tless maybe; but, not hurt. We were turning out on the highway and a trucker had stopped and parked off to the side; the trucker got out and crossed the road and started riding a skateboard … where he was going, I had no idea; he was a couple of miles from the nearest anything.
Rebecca – Hope you get to feeling much better real soon.
Rori – My husband is 76; the other day he fell asleep in his chair and it was about suppertime. I woke him up and he was so disoriented it almost scared me. I called him and he looked up at me; but, he couldn’t remember much of anything. I’m guessing that maybe he was so deep in REM sleep that it shocked his system. He’s been fine since.
Michelle – Louis and I went to Mellow Mushroom several months ago; and, we ate lunch there; had some left over and came right home. Did not stop or anything. That night I ate some and 4 hours later, Louis ate the rest. I got sick immediately; and, then he did. We both decided that it had to be ‘food poisoning’. I don’t know why we did not get sick at lunchtime; but, did at suppertime. As a child, I got very sick after eating ‘creamed corn’ and threw it up. I was an adult before I would even ‘try’ it again. All I really remember is that I cannot look at vomit, it makes me gag; and, unless it is ‘fresh creamed corn’ I can’t eat it. I don’t eat canned creamed corn, at all. Louis does NOT drink enough fluids either.
Whoever was talking about husbands and their fathers … I know where you are coming from. My late DFnL was 'mean as a snake' (according to Louis and Mike); but, Louis knows (now) why - because he wanted them to be independent and able to do things that 'needed' to be done. My DMnL was a 'love'. Louis takes after his Mother in that he is definitely an extrovert. He can talk to anybody and has a very calming affect on his clients and sons, me, and total strangers. My DBnL, on the other hand, is EXACTLY like his Dadd - mean, moody, looks just like him, and now that he is older - very strange, too. Spends all the $$$ he makes working for Louis on lottery scratch off tickets; I mean the $10 and $20 ones. He has a stack on them (several stacks) … one has to be 7 or 8 inches tall. He spends 30 or more minutes scratching off tickets before he goes to work; then again, in the afternoon - same thing. He brings bread crumbs to the little birds at the convenience store and whistles to them. He is a 'hermit' … most days he doesn't say Jack-Squat to anyone. He has a granddaughter who is a teacher married to a medical student and they have a baby that just turned one. For the life of us, we do not understand why he does not move to Gainesville, FL - buy a duplex and let them live for 'low rent' in the other side. He could help with the baby; and she could make sure that he is okay. Stubborn! She has called Louis after trying to get him to answer the phone. He was really sick and in the hospital the beginning of last year (or year before). She wanted him to moved down there where they were living and where they will probably stay. Her Daddy (his youngest son) died a couple of years ago; he's got another son who lives in Tallahassee who he will go down a 'visit' for the day; but, because he thinks that his DnL's parents are stuck-up he won't stay - not at Thanksgiving or Christmas or for his grandchildren's birthdays. He has another grandson who lives out in California (son of the oldest son in Tallahassee). He thinks he is 'weird' … look in the mirror, Mike - he gets it 'honestly'. He keeps a toothpick in his mouth ALL the time. Whenever I look at him, I think - one day he is going to swallow that damn thing; but, it is a habit that his Dad had. When he is a 'butt-O' … I call him "Granddaddy" (usually that will change his attitude). But, most times, unless he talks to me first - I let him be. He's grumpy most of the time; but, when he is in a 'good mood' he is talkative. Crazy man!
Skuehn48 – I cannot take any statins … I have to try to keep it under control with diet. UGH! That and trying to ‘lose weight’ has been hard to do. It is still high; but, I have taken so many different medications for several health issues that I will only take a ‘new’ medication if my PsycheMD approves it. He is my ‘most important’ MD; then my Neurologist, then my GP and my GYN (who has treated me for over 43 years) are running a close tie for 3rd/4th. I have to see my GP every 6 months just to be able to stay ‘on his list of patients’ or else they’ll roll me down to see the next in line. Personally, due to some issues I have had with ‘female’ MDs/Dos – I don’t WANT to go to a ‘female’ MD. If ‘they’ have a ‘bad bedside manner’ it is usually because they are either having a ‘bad hair day’ or they are ‘outright mean-spirited as HELL-O Kitty’. When I was in the hospital the end of last year – the PsycheMD (a female – and not my own) decided that she would get me ‘textbook theraupedic’ on all my medications. Never asked me ‘if’ there was a ‘reason’ that my Dilantin might have been on the low side. Now, it will take me even longer thanks to her increasing my Dilantin to the point that I was “Dilantin Toxic” which made my first week at home very scary … and probably the reason that my husband told my ‘social worker’ that I was not ‘ready’ to come home.
Katla – Love the Lucille Ball quote. She was a very talented woman.
Well, will need to be going to be soon. Just as soon as I hear what is going on … on the news. Got to go have them re-check my wrist; then get my hair cut. YEAH!!! It really needs it.

Did the water class today. The plan for tomorrow is to do an ASAP Fitness DVD and then some of a yoga DVD
Rye – I’m wondering…could your rash have been a reaction to your stress? I think cyclists DO need to monitor their electrolytes on long bike rides. Am I right, M?
Sue in WA – no, I don’t take any statin. The only things I take are the lamictal (which I’ve been taking for about a year now and haven’t been constantly itching), phenobarbitol (which I’ve been taking for a long time with no reaction), calcium suppliment (which I’ve been taking for a long time with no reaction) and a multi (same thing – long time, no reaction). I’m always taking things down to the condo that I don’t regularly use or that I’d probably donate otherwise. Like I have a vacuum cleaner down there that’s probably at least 30 years old. One attachment doesn’t work and hasn’t for a long time, there’s a tiny hole in the tube that puts the dirt in the bag. But for as often as I use it (maybe twice a year), it works. I have a colander down there that I was going to give to the Salvation Army until I found that we needed one down there. Most of the things that we need if I don’t have, I get at the Salvation Army
NYKaren – I have a feeling that all the fat probably isn’t the cause of Vince’s problems. Now if I have a lot of fats, my stomach starts to say to me “I don’t think so”. He’s had this kind of lunch before. I really think it has to do more with what he doesn’t eat than what he does. As you know, he’s REAL pickey, will only eat certain foods. You need a balanced diet. But that’s the way he was brought up.
Okie – happy anniversary!
M – problem with the icing on the cupcake is that he’s had them before with this icing. He usually takes his vitamin with breakfast. I don’t think he takes anything with dinner. I take one of my calcium suppliments, but I’ve never had a reaction. I never thought of a TIA!!! Now THAT’S something worth thinking heavily about. He DID have WPW. That article was very informative.
You ladies gave me some great suggestions about the itching. Problem? I can’t remember them all. I do remember the coconut oil which I can’t use, the Dove, the Cera-V (is that how it’s spelled?), the shea butter. But for the life of me I can’t remember the others. I remember someone suggested cutting back on sugars (do that pretty muchly) and carbs (trying….). But beyond that….nothing. Does anyone know how I can search for the posts about this? I’ve tried using the “search” (supposedly) tool, I searched by “exermom” by “itch” – didn’t get this info tho.
Lanette – like you, I could never get the breathing down right when it came to swimming. I did OK in the deep end on my back. The energy company would kill the trees under the power lines here even before the trees got big. They kill trees that I never even would have thought would interfer with the power lines.
The original plan for tomorrow was to to the bank, see Lynette, go to the Green Room, the farmer’s market, Lowe’s Hardware, buy gas and come home. Well, seems we’re going to be cutting the grass so I think I’ll go early to get the gas, Lowe’s hardware, the bank, Lynette, Green Room and skip the farmer’s market. We’ve lived a few weeks without honey, another week won’t kill us. I do want some local honey, tho.
Snowflake – Vince will go to the doc at the drop of a hat if he thinks he even slightly needs to go. However, he doesn’t feel he needs to since it’s over with. Hopefully, if it was a TIA, it’ll slow up in his routine blood work
Rye – personally, I like doing yard work myself. Not only for the monetary savings, but it gives me a sense of accomplishment and ownership. Like I look at that 20 tons of rock that we put down 6 years ago and know that we did all the work. Now I look at the mulch and know that it was my work that did it. OK, Vince still needs to spread it out. The only reason I haven’t done that is because I won’t do it right (the way he wants it done). I should probably just do it myself and if he doesn’t like it, tough! Maybe that’s what I’ll do.
Today spray painted the blocks for the Christmas decorations, wiped down some of the railing on the deck, finished spray painting, put the rock down in the places where we needed more (the extras from when Vince put down the pavers for the umbrella), then started to hammer in the nails for the blocks only I’m not doing it right. So I’ll leave that to Vince to do. I just may spread the mulch myself.
Jess called yesterday. Seems she took 4 exams, she aced 3 of them and got a “C” in the fourth. In her words “I’m not paying all this money for a “C”. So she’s motivated. She’s like Vince, if he wants something done, it’ll get done asap. If it’s not high on his priority list, it doesn’t get done. She’s now talking more and more about her white coat ceremony. I think for a while there she was almost unsure if she’d be going. I knew that she could do it and would be going.
Beth – I hope everything works out for your son
Wendy – what ARE you going to do with all your time???
Nanajo – you become part of this group by posting! Come back often. Don’t forget to bookmark this spot. Welcome!
Lenora – I like your take that “white wine is clear liquid”. I just may mention that to the doc the next time I need to go for a colonoscopy. “Oh, I guess I can have white wine since it’s clear…”. I’m sure he’ll agree <yea, right>

Found out yesterday that Corey's father died. Peacefully, in his sleep, at his daughter's home in Oregon. He was 93, had raised 12 kids in Alaska, six of them as a single parent after Corey's mom ran off with the local school teacher and went back to Minnesota.
The grandkids' reaction was interesting - our son's first reaction was "How's Dad taking it." Our daughter's first reaction was being unhappy that there won't be a funeral. The family decided to cremate him, take his ashes back home to Alaska, and hold a memorial or life celebration at the next family reunion.
My husband is always hard to read with stuff like this. We spent a week in Alaska with his dad and older sister last year over July 4, and he had just spoken to his dad two weeks ago. He cares deeply, I know, but past experience shows the emotional gates are usually slammed shut pretty hard when he's grieving. All I can do is be here if/when the gates open.
Love y'all,

Good morning all! Quick shout out to Heather: When you first mentioned Arendal; I immediately thought of Frozen. Frozen has got to be one of my least favorite kid movies, and I have seen a LOT of kid movies. BUT it is a favorite of so many of my daycare kids. Wait til they see the photos and hear of my friend who is visiting Arendal. I think your Arendal looks MUCH more interesting, charming and pleasant! lol ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)
Welcome newbies! You have joined just by visiting us. Remember to bookmark this thread by clicking on the star on the same line as WOMEN 50+ FOR JUNE 2018. Join in when you feel the urge and remember to tell us a little about your journey, where your from (as specific as you would like to get), and what you wish to be called. My name is Kelly and you can call me Kelly or KJ. I live in West Michigan, work full time as a childcare provider (24 years) have been married for 29 years, have three grown children, one grandchild (the amazing Joaquin), am 51, 5'8 and weigh, currently, 228. I was thin my entire life, with a great metabolism, active job and lifestyle; then menopause struck early and changed the rules on me. It has taken me a while to get control over the situation, and life always seems to want to throw little curves and stressors at us when we are struggling. BUT, these women on this site are truly a lifeline. They have great advise, great shoulders to lean on and give a kick in the backside when needed! Welcome to all!
Kids arriving soon, so I have to scoot! Finishing up the last week of the school year and getting ready for my roster of kids to flip to "summer mode". ALL BOYS THIS SUMMER! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)6 -
Had a little walk around the Old Town today and visited the Old Town Hall. Arendal used to be one of the most successful and rich towns in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. The portraits of all the worthies were on the walls. Some formidable and stern looking women!
We talked to a woman our age, with her grandchildren, who was just coming back from the free kindergarten. It's for people who don't send their kids to school yet. You have to attend with them, but they were all having a picnic by the side of the fjord and some in the water with life jackets on. Some African refugees were in the group. The woman was telling us about the town and all the facilities. She is married to an English man. It's nice when locals bother to stop and chat.
We had a coffee, which was not too expensive by Norwegian standards!!!! Nice spot in the harbour.
Then we came back to the boat for lunch of salad and a whole sea bream!
DH has gone out for a serious walk up the surrounding hills and I will wander out again for another tour of the town later. I want to clock up 500 calories walking and then do some dancing later. There is a nice designer shop I want to have a second look at. Lovely glassware.
On the cruise the service is amazing. They try to honour your every wish. The Captain was telling us one of his funny stories about it. He said, "I mentioned in the early days that I am not that keen on carrots. I haven't seen a carrot since in all the time I've been working here!" That just about sums it up.
I sent our first load of laundry off today. It's free and, unlike at home, they iron it. How lovely!
Much love, Heather in Norway. XXXXXXXX

Kelly an all boy summer, what fun you will have!
Michelle CeraVe works for me (pricey though)
Heather great pics, I'm arm chair travelling with you.
Barbie we are probably gonna make a similar house move in the next 5 years, right now we still enjoy the yard work, but I can see it wearing thin on both of us!
had a work out with a young personable funny personal trainer yesterday and worked on my squat position, today I'm feeling it. Held a plank for 25 seconds, but he gave me a more active exercise with the plank I'm gonna try, also gave me a great way to stretch out my super tight calves. A lot of my foot issues are coming from super tight calves and weak ankles. Don't know if I can afford training sessions, but I got a lot of info to work on and am looking forward to getting back to the gym afterwork today.

Michele: I would encourage Vince to see his doctor. DH had TIA problems in the past and they were mini strokes. Eventually he had the big deal stroke and it left him with some permanent visual problems. RE: Swimming: I prefer to swim on my back, too. As a child I took lessons at the Y and also at the local pool. Both places were focused on teaching the crawl. The local pool wasn't heated by anything other than the sun and the Y kept their pool at competition temperature. BRRRRR! :grumble:
Heather: What beautiful photos!!! Arendal is charming. I love to see the world through your camera lens!
Lisa: I'm so sorry for the loss of Corey's dad. It sounds as though he had a good long life. Ninety-three is quite an achievement. (((HUGS))) for Corey. :flowerforyou:
Kim from FL: Welcome to a great group. Post often! :flowerforyou:
I'm on a quest to find a folding dish rack with its own drip tray. We have one for the boat and I'd like another for the RV.

Services The thing is, I HATE, DESPISE home ownership. I have nothing at all good to say about it and would leave to an apartment in a second with no second thoughts if my husband felt the same way.
We have owned a home for about 12 years (before that we were urban renters) and have seen our property taxes more than double into the double digit thousands, needed a new roof, foundation work, new sewer line, work to shore up the retaining wall, new hot water heater and dishwasher, and are now being told our furnace and air conditioning will probably bite the dust in the next short while. Yes we had inspections before buying and yes the only thing they noted as a problem was the age of the hot water heater.
It has been nothing but a money pit (60%+ if income goes to the house I’d estimate) and a headache. None of the things that are supposed to be good about homeownership in my opinion (repaint, remodel bathroom to my taste, etc) are possible because all the money is spent on taxes and making sure the damn thing doesn’t fall down.
Did I say I hate it?
Lol. Nothing I can do about it. My disabilities are the reason we left the busy urban environment and my beloved apartment life. John still misses Chicago passionately. He likes owning, likes yard work (I actually usually can’t even leave the house to enjoy the yard because I get eaten up by bugs 9/12 months of the year.) Ah well.
Disregard ladies. Just frustrated. And scared. Needed to vent. Plumbers want 8000 dollars to get us our washing machine working without flooding the garage, HVAC wants double that for new air/furnace which they say will be giving out soon, chimney needs thousands of dollars of work we are still putting off and John plans to get on the roof this weekend with a chainsaw to cut tree limbs overhanging the garage and that scares me silly.
Yeah, this is mostly probably just me scared about John on the roof.
ENOUGH! In the good news department:
My rash seems to have completely cleared up. Potential offending products moved to a high shelf so I don’t use them carelessly. I’m keeping them around for the ingredients lists - to compare if this happens again.
Also in the good news department all three kitties are healthy for two months running! It has been quite a while since they gave us a break from health scares- lol.
John is well, if overweight (he was one of the big spurs and supporters of ME getting fit and losing weight but somehow doesn’t have the same attitude about himself - I’m treading lightly). And I’m holding together.
We are making travel plans to visit my father in August. I have not seen him since my mom passed away five years ago. We got a really good airfare (shockingly good, honestly) and can stay with relatives in Chicago so it won’t squeeze us too much financially either!
My niece graduates high school this weekend. This is my SIL’s eldest and the family is whooping it up with a huge family get together planned for all day Sunday. I must remember to text her and find out if they still have the trampoline in the back yard. I used it on thanksgiving (boy that was fun) but they were planning on getting rid of it because their girls don’t jump on it anymore. If they still have it I am bringing a change of clothes (Outside temp being close to 100 - if I plan to jump I’m going to need the clothes change!)
Well, off to stretch and do my weights!
Sending happy healthy thoughts to all

Alot accomplished this morning, only blip is Home Depot ,my landlord is over here doing a few things and they were supposed to deliver and install new microwave, they just delivered and didn't install, needless to say Doug taking a ride over there and giving them an ear full, they power washed our building so the windows got done and the patio clean...did some vacuuming and cleaned my closet and set up a tea station in my room...so when I wake up everything is right here..1

Lenora - Food Poisoning coming later. I was a waitress for too many years of my life to count. The last restaurant I worked at before it opened had a Food Inspector come to give a talk about food handling. In that presentation we learned that food poisoning takes about 12 hours to develop. He said 90% of the time when they did investigations it was what people ate at home that caused the poisoning not the restaurant meal they had eaten just before they took sick.
Rebecca - I would love to take a cruise as well. My daughters were both in the Sea Cadet program here in landlocked Alberta. They were blessed to be able to attend camps for a lot of years in various parts of Canada. My eldest daughter was able to spend two weeks on a Tall Ship - The Maple Leaf. She was about 14 and at the age of 29 (how did that happen?) still talks about it as if it was yesterday. She loved it. She slept in a hammock over the side of the boat one night, while they were on the Pacific Ocean.
Michelle - My best friends husband has been suffering from TIA's for about 5 years now, they started when he was 53 or 54, he has had to change his diet, try to get his blood pressure more under control. He tried to hide them from my BF for a long time until they became so bad he couldn't. They work at the same company he is the Plant Manager and she is the Office Manager, he had one at work and was found on his office floor. That is when she found out about them. They figured he had had about 5 before this. They have told him that these are warning signs. I fear she will be a young widow because he won't take care of himself.
Lisa Sorry to hear about your Father In Law
Heather - Thank you so much for sharing the pictures and your adventures on your cruise. I will have to show my grandson the pictures of Arendal. He will be very excited.
Kim from Florida - welcome
Kelly - All boys this summer, oh what fun that will be. How many do you keep?
Karen - what exercises do they recommend for tight calves, I think I am suffering from the same issue
Rye - I am in total agreement with you about home ownership. I think we did much better renting as well. If something broke we didn't need to worry about the cost of fixing it.
Tracey in Edmonton0 -
Ok now you have me scared....I have owned 2 homes with Tom and we put quite a bit of money into the home here....not so much Florida...
I will be buying this condo... everything all in all in great shape...and I might have to put new water heater in ,in a few years...no worry about roof...and upgrades maybe awhile down the line, but everything fully functional..never in my life have I been a home owner on my own.. exciting and scary at the same time.4
