@girlinahat it is the same in Canada, they are especially significant (people wear poppies on their coats/shirts) leading up to November 11th--Remembrance Day. There is also the poem In Flanders Fields by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae that mentions poppies on the battle fields in Belgium, I'm pretty sure the poppy is a pretty universal symbol for remembrance of soldiers that have died during wartime.3

@Orphia You are the BOMB! Congratulations!
I went out for my 5k this morning (which right about now feels pretty piddly, lol) with my sister. It was her first race ever, and my first since late 2016. The weather was muggy but comfortable, and it was a little hazy so we weren't in full sun. I think the course was hillier than my sister was ready for, so that slowed us down some. We finished up at 44:40, which I think was pretty close to my time on my first 5k. Get this, though...even though I had to wait for her to catch up several times, and even though I crossed the finish line in front of her? She placed ahead of me! I no longer have any faith at all in race timing! (I actually wonder if they had her break the tie because she's in a younger AG than me?)
Anyway, it was a fun race and fun to have my sister run with me. I hope for the next one we'll be able to improve our speed. I'd like to sign up for one by myself, too, just to see what I can do at this point in the game.
They took pictures, but they're not up yet...I'm sure when they are I shall have something truly, spectacularly awful to present you all with!

Did 4 miles today. Slowed down a little and was able to run a bit further before needing to walk. 45.9 miles to go.4

I am a total beginner, but I always wanted to start running.
I am planning to start running with the couch to 5 km program which combines intervals of walking and jogging.
The original plan is 3x a week, but I am thinking of doing it every day (except weekend), i.e. 5x a week since in my case it would be mostly walking in the beginning.
The main idea is to form a habit of everyday morning activity.
Would that be too much?
If you already have a decent cardio program, those first three weeks are nice...that forth one, yeah - take a rest day (at least from running). I'm doing C25K as well. My "rest days" I walk instead of trying to run and it helps so much. That way I still get my morning exercise and miles in, I just don't overdo it and burnout.3 -
My First 50 Km Run – Sunday 10 June 2018 - Recap
I’d been planning it for 6 months. I have a spreadsheet I’d made with a Strava Premium McMillan marathon training plan in it, and the 50 km Ultramarathon training plan from the book, “Relentless Forward Progress”, and I basically managed to follow the distance of the long runs each week, while running 4-5 times a week as directed by what my body could cope with. Every day I would enter what I’d done, and tweak what I would plan to do.
I’d first thought I’d do the Canberra Marathon Festival 50 km event in April, but travel and accommodation were going to be too expensive, plus, events are stressful, so I decided I’d keep it simple: If I want to do 50 km, do 50 km. I don’t need to pay to run – just do it around home.
I chose this weekend, the long weekend in June, since I’d have more days to choose from if the weather was bad, plus I could have time for recovery. Sunday was perfect. 5-15 Celsius (41-59F).
1-10 km (1-6 miles)
My usual morning run in the dark route. I saw W and N who both knew what I was up to, and wished me luck. DK tooted her horn at me.
I made sure throughout the run to only run at a pace that let me breathe easy. Early on, I had to keep slowing down, because I knew I’d need that energy later.
10-25 km (6-15.5 miles)
Uphill to the next town, then back down again. Saw G, which was nice. The fog was beautiful in the dawn sunlight.
25-40 km (15.5 – 25 miles)
More hills. C pulled up next to me at 30 km, and I was happy to report I was feeling alright. I did start getting slower gradually from there. Around 38 km my left lower back was starting to hurt and I could tell I was tensing up. It helped if I stretched my arms up and out.
Fuel: I ate yoghurt and a big muesli bar before I set out, and on the run I had 2 other bars, a donut, and 2 energy gels with caffeine.
Loo stops were at 9, 18, 25, and 39 km. Didn’t “need” them all, but I’d planned the route to go near the loos in case I did need them, and then I used them so I was comfortable the whole time.
40-50 km (25-31 miles)
Mostly flat. My body was running alright, if slowly, but it was starting to complain in places. Had arranged for F to run with me for the last section. We chatted, and it helped distract me from the sore back. It was nice to have someone with me when I passed the 42.2 km marathon mark, and enter into the “uncharted waters of Ultra territory”, as F put it. Then it was a painfully slow countdown jog to the finish. I’d called my husband to meet me, and little did I know, my dear friend DB had arranged to be there too, with BB, AB, and G, and bunches of balloons. My own personal finish line and cheer squad!
Too long; didn’t read?: Ran 50 km! Achieved my 2018 goal! Ran all the way, which was the cherry on top! Did it in 6 hours as I’d hoped! I have awesome friends.

I just started the couch to 5k on Friday. I am also not much of a runner but I needed something different to push me through the summer. I downloaded an app and just started with day 1. I did add some intervals to the first day (12 instead of 8) but only because I have been doing the elliptical and figured I could handle it. Yesterday I did day 2 and since my legs were a bit sore I only did the 8. I started to look in my app and realized each week only includes 3 days. I guess it's set up for rest days in between. Oops! I'm going to take today as a rest day and then plan on running every other day. On the off days I will walk instead of run to get myself in the habit of going out and use those days for my strength training at the gym.
It's nice to see there is someone at the same place I am in this running journey.
@girlinahat, @ladysnickerdoo, @VUA21 Thanks for the advice! Sounds like a good idea to walk in those rest days.
I work from home, so my main intention is to create a habit of daily getting out of the house and getting some movement. 3x/week doesn't feel frequent enough to form a habit, but with those walk days between, I think it will be great.
There is a beautiful park 15 mins biking from my house where I plan to do my training, which means I will include some daily biking too.
I just need to get up early enough to start before heat hits. That is going to be the real challenge

There is no way I can catch up with the 400+ posts I've missed while being away in the UK for the past week. But I did see @orphia posting about her amazing feat (and amazing feet too, no doubt). I am in awe.
I didn't do any running while I was away, and I definitely missed it. But it was a good opportunity to get my legs fully rested from those little niggly aches and pains that I normally ignore. Looking forward to getting back in my routine though.
And I went to the seaside and saw some puffins.

I know that the cornflower is the French equivalent to the poppy, but wasn’t sure how widespread the poppy was in other countries. And I don’t think all countries (even those who fought in the First World War) have 11th November as a commemorative date.

06/10: 14.05 mile long run with 10x1' pickups + strength
Total: 50.62 miles
Workout notes:
I slept in super late yesterday (was out until 1 am with two of my lab partners and mayyybe had 1-2 too many moscow mules haha). Waited until the afternoon to get my easy run in, just 3 miles followed by 45 min on the spin bike. My legs were still feeling quite sore from Thursday night's 5K so I elected not to do any strength training. I woke up on the early side this morning to hopefully get most of my long run in before the rain got too bad. I made it ~8 miles before the storm started up, but at least the rain felt really nice and helped cool me off! I just really hate it when my running shoes get wet, but there's only so much you can do to avoid it Legs felt a little sore at the start of my run, but definitely felt better and better as I went on. 14 miles felt really long last week, but this time around it felt a lot easier and shorter so that's a good sign! I think adding in some pickups (10x1 min at 5-10K/4 min easy) helped pass the time and keep my form from deteriorating too much. Strength training is on the agenda for this evening, but if I'm being honest I'd say its 50/50 as to whether or not I'll actually do it.
Very excited because I'm going out to a nearby forest preserve tomorrow with my boyfriend and a few of his friends. I'll finally get to do some trail running!! Monday's are usually rest days for my, but the opportunity was too good to pass up. Only thing is that it is an 8-9 mile loop, so I hope my legs will recover quickly enough from my LR today to be up for it!
Thank you so much @Elise4270 @fitoverfortymom @5BeautifulDays @midwesterner85 @kgirlhart @Teresa502 @seanevan10 @lporter229 @Scott6255 @rheddmobile @katharmonic @shanaber @amymoreorless @PastorVincent @Orphia @marisap2010 and anyone else I may have missed!
@katharmonic Great race photo, you look so happy!
@polskagirl01 Beautiful flowers, you are very fortunate to have such a lovely place to run!
@Orphia WOW congratulations!!! So very inspirational. I love the finish photo with the balloons, and sounds like a great surprise to have some friends waiting at the finish
@BruinsGal_91 Love the photo! Puffins have always been one of my favorite birds after seeing them at the zoo as a kid. I begged my parents to let me get one as a pet (lol) so they bought me a stuffed animal puffin that I carried everywhere for about three years
Upcoming Races

Well done @Orphia - you are an inspiration to us all - ESPECIALLY doing it with limited cheering from the sidelines!!!1

Aw @BruinsGal_91 - puffins are just STUNNING birds! Great photo. I’m not jealous AT ALL!!!1

Being sick and not running I haven't checked in since Friday I think... I have no running updates to post but I am feeling a bit better and hope I can get a bit of a run in tomorrow morning. We'll see as the congestion seems to be the worst at night and 1st thing in the morning. On the other hand not running is about killing me and I just want to eat every carb available!
@polskagirl01 - love the poppy fields! I don't think they have the Remembrance significance here but they are the California state flower and are protected.
In the same way that @RespectTheKitty likes Fallout Boy, I like The War on Drugs and Kurt Vile and you will find them throughout my playlists.
@RunsOnEspresso - I have a cooling towel but have never tried using it for running. When I have used it at agility trials it worked 'ok' but didn't really remain cool for very long.
Also - that run in (almost) with a semi is SO scary! I can't believe the driver was paying so little attention to where you were! Makes me happy I only have to deal with dumb drivers in cars and pickup trucks as the semis aren't allowed on the roads I have to cross. Be safe my friend!
@orphia - WhooHoo!! Congratualtions on running 50k and your friends are amazing!
@daneejela - welcome! I also worked from home when I started running. It is a great way to break up the day, get away from the computer and just get outside! Whether you are walking, running or riding it is all good because you are moving! Also I love your profile picture
@noblsheep - watch out for that cat! I often have to help our neighbor with her cat and I have gotten pretty good at cooking the cat over to me and grabbing her feet from underneath before she can scratch me or get away. It also helps that the cat is fairly overweight and doesn't move too fast
@BruinsGal_91 - I love puffins! What an awesome picture!!5 -
@girlinahat @shanaber @ariceroni unfortunately I can't take credit for the photo. It's one of my husband's pictures (bird photography is a serious hobby for him). Taken at Bempton Cliffs near Bridlington in North Yorkshire if anyone fancies a visit.5

@BruinsGal_91 - well tell him we all love it! Awesome photography!

For all the new runners in the thread, as we head into summer do not forget to watch the DEW POINT before planning your runs. Dew point is a better predictor than relative humidity on how bad the weather is going to impact your run. Here is a handy chart:
