Thought on diet sodas

The aspartame in diet sodas causes devastating effects to the gut microbiome, which in turn leads to weight gain. I’ve researched this thoroughly and there are many scientific studies to back it up; do the research. This is not a simple correlation issue. Many factors go into weight gain/loss...and diet soda plays into them. As a Nutritionist and Personal Trainer, I will not work with clients who will not surrender their soda, as it is #1 offender in my book for health and weight issues. Spend the 5 min online, at the science, to look for oneself before echoing bogus, deflective rhetoric. And, just to add to the conversation, Diet Soda May be zero calorie, but it is disease inducing and destructive to health. I would never drink it, ever, if one can resist. Again, not here to argue, please just do the simple research and decide for yourself if a moments taste is worth your wellbeing This goes beyond weight.
I want you to get your trainer license and burn it. Right now. You don't know crap.36 -

I would suggest that you read the link I posted in the comment above yours. It contains lots of research, collected by a biochemist who is a member here, that states otherwise.
I lost 65 pounds drinking 1-2 cans of diet soda a day. No problems whatsoever.15 -
Thank you for making this topic. It's something that I was wondering about myself recently too.
Personally I find them helpful when I really crave something sweet.8 -

And this is why seeing a registered dietician is so much better than getting diet advice from a personal trainer or nutritionist. More reliable advice will come from someone with a university qualification who has a much greater level of understanding than someone that can get their certificate online in less than a year.

I love how these threads summon the woonatics who insist that the information is out there if you'd just do your own research and then they fade back into the woodwork having never provided a single supporting link or document.
I much prefer the Mercolites and the Fungsciples, because at least they will provide links. even if they're easily answered and debunked21 -

I was thinking "Thanks for the warning. There is NO WAY I'd hire her as a personal trainer, based on that comment alone."
I wonder what she thinks of my intra-workout Sour Patch Kids?16 -
I find that diet soda satisfies me when nothing else will...when I'm feeling snacky in the evening and want to raid the fridge for ice cream or nuts. A diet soda or a zero calorie sparkling water to sip on kills the cravings for me and gives me something to do with my mouth besides eat. Diet soda has saved me many, many calories.
I ALSO occasionally indulge in a Coke with real corn syrup. I've still lost almost 50 lbs. Soda lovers of the world, unite!13 -

There's no research that identifies a causation link between diet soda and weight gain. The worst case you have is correlation studies, but those can't identify cause. In my case, i've lost 150ish lbs drinking several non-caloric beverages daily.7 -
I personally stopped drinking them. My mother in law had severe damage done to her bladder and the dr told her it was from something in the Diet Coke. Granted, she drank it like water. Like a 12pk a day. I am not sure whether what he said to her was true or not, but it scared me enough to not want to find out. That being said, I wouldn’t be above having one on a rare occasion if I wanna as craving it.8

After bladder surgery, I was told to temporarily reduce my caffeine intake until I healed up. No mention was made of any particular beverage or whether it was diet or regular, etc. I was just told "No more than one cup of coffee or tea per day and go easy on the colas."6

Yes! Many times my craving for sweets at night is alleviated by flavored sparkling water...0 -

This is why so many of us recommend ignoring nutritional advice from personal trainers.25 -
Artificial sweeteners are the new villains in the diet game. Just like some years ago fat was the villain - remember that? - everyone was running around eating Snackwell cookies and cooking without fat. Then it was decided that carbs were the villain so people started eating fat and cutting out the carbs.
Now it's artificial sweeteners. I use a lot of them. They've never impacted my weight loss or gain the way sitting down and eating a whole pint of ice cream does. I predict that ten years from now the nutritionists and personal trainers will be off artificial sweeteners and on some other bandwagon - "Dateline: 2028 - researchers say air conditioning causes weight gain!"
Sorry, I refuse to buy the hype in spite of the pseudoscienterrific frame that's been put around it. Everything as they say in moderation.8 -
I'm more worried about my teeth than anything...but, yeah, no one's taking my Diet Coke away. I'm down nearly 30 pounds and drink about one Diet Coke a day with lunch.3
-
I always order Diet Coke with my Big Mac meals...1

I actually don’t think artificial sweeteners get the same widespread mainstream demonization that fat did and that carbs and sugar now currently seems to be the target of. I think there are a number of misinformed zealots who fear artificial sweeteners simply because OMG CHEMIKALS and that those folks pop in with junk science and correlation studies or my favorite, “do your own research”.

I had to cut sugar from my diet, I find diet soda very sweet now. I like to have about 1 a day with lunch or after dinner. I've read mixed stories on the effects of artificial sugar on your system and how your body copes with the false impulses it sends.0

People don't drink soda, diet or full sugar, for it's health benfits lol. I simply choose diet because if I'm gonna drink calories, it better be alcoholic.7

How about citing some of the through research you've done. Peer reviewed studies or Dr Oz?15 -
Soda is junk, and I know better than to drink it........but I refuse to give it up! It's one of my few guilty pleasures. I do at least drink diet soda, and only get it when we go out to eat, but still. Could I give it up? Sure. But right now, I just don't want to.
And no, it won't inhibit your weightloss.15
