Thought on diet sodas

The aspartame in diet sodas causes devastating effects to the gut microbiome, which in turn leads to weight gain. I’ve researched this thoroughly and there are many scientific studies to back it up; do the research. This is not a simple correlation issue. Many factors go into weight gain/loss...and diet soda plays into them. As a Nutritionist and Personal Trainer, I will not work with clients who will not surrender their soda, as it is #1 offender in my book for health and weight issues. Spend the 5 min online, at the science, to look for oneself before echoing bogus, deflective rhetoric. And, just to add to the conversation, Diet Soda May be zero calorie, but it is disease inducing and destructive to health. I would never drink it, ever, if one can resist. Again, not here to argue, please just do the simple research and decide for yourself if a moments taste is worth your wellbeing This goes beyond weight.
The aspartame causes no detectable effects to the gut microbiome, which has no impact on weight management.
As a Microbiologist specializing in metabolics I welcome any studies to the contrary to review.28 -

I hear that. I seldom drink alcohol (unless we're talking a quarter-shot glass of wine for religious reasons, and even then I'd prefer grape juice). But when I'm out with friends, I will sometimes get a mulled cider at Timothy's, which is worth every one of its scrumptious 230 calories.3 -
6 years ago I lost 90 lbs & drank Diet Coke with each meal..now I've lost 19 lbs & still drinking my Diet Coke..I have heard tons of bad things about Aspartame, but I also drink plenty of water in between meals. So far so good..Knock on wood! lol0

That is a brilliant business strategy!! Because if your clients buy that line of BS, they are sure to buy your line of MLM super-food, fat-burning, muscle-building protein powder weight loss miracle in a box (auto-shipped for your convenience, of course.)27 -

Also, if someone tells me that they can't help me achieve my fitness goals because I'm consuming a zero-calorie product that has no impact on my weight or fitness, it's a refreshing disclosure of total incompetence. I appreciate people who let me know right off the bat that they're a terrible choice for professional services.23 -

You say you're not here to argue, but you make absolute claims based on your "authority" as a personal trainer and nutritionist and your research without citing where you got this research. Give me a break. If you're as well read as you claim, you should be aware there are people in medical research who would read your post and label it woo. If they were as harmful for weight loss as you claim, all the people here who have used them for weight loss and maintenance would not have succeeded in their efforts.
"There’s a potential, and probably real, harm from consuming added sugars; there are most likely none from artificial sweeteners." Dr. Aaron Carroll, professor of pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine.

I must be some kind of special then...
I think if you think diet soda is the #1 offender for weight issues, you probably need to do a bit more studying.
ETA: the only way I could see diet soda having "devastating" effects to the gut microbiome is if it was consumed in mass quantities...somehow I don't think my one or maybe two Frescas are having any devastating effect on anything...8 -

Good news - read this thread and rest assured - all the bad things about Aspartame have been debunked, it is one of the most studied substances on the planet in the last several decades and time and again has been proven safe for consumption.
