@RunsOnEspresso on the rare occassion i run in the morning, spoonful of peanut butter or a few of yogurt. and chews or gus on longer runs
Oh, I could probably do the spoonful of pb. Maybe a few crackers with it. That'd be quick. And just enough food. I can't eat a lot at 4 am.PastorVincent wrote: »@RunsonEspresso I do not eat meals perse I just kind of eat a little here and there all day long as that is the easiest way for me to control my blood sugar and prevent the spike/crash cycle that I am blessed with. So what I eat before I run has little to do with the run. I do not find food in my stomach to be much of an issue. I might have protein, low glycemic carbs, or candy - just depending on how good I am being
I also do not describe to "breakfast food" vs "lunch food" and sometimes have a cheeseburger for breakfast.
I rarely go more than a waking hour without some kind of eating. I even get up in the middle of the night and eat sometimes.
What can I say? I like food... therefor I run
I eat every few hours or so. Otherwise I get headaches and shakey. So far, the only thing I have found to not sit well while running is spicy foods. And it's not my stomach, it's the hiatal hernia.
I had a cheese stick this morning. That seemed to work.@RunsonEspresso - I usually don't eat anything before my morning run of 5 miles. If I'm going longer, I will eat a little something - usually something with PB. PB and crackers or some energy bites. When I run with my group, I have a 40 minute drive so that gives plenty of digestive time. I can't do smoothies or yogurt before running. I think it's because I get so hot and they don't sit well on a warm tummy!
I could never do 5 fasted! I've done 3 and that's about all I can do. And I don't do it often because I find myself not feeling as well after.0 -

Started off the running week with an easy (lol) 5K-ish. I lol because if this is supposed to be easy by now, then I’m doing something wrong. I mean, I definitely have times where it feels like I’m flying - my third mile today was blink-and-you-miss-it after almost giving up when my watch buzzed at mile two and I realized I still had a mile and a half to go after misjudging my surroundings and thinking I was on the home stretch.
For real though, I do not get these people I see casually chatting while they maintain what must be a sub-ten-minute-mile pace, looking like they never sweated a day in their lives. When I was just getting started I stuck to the run-as-slow-as-possible rule and it worked, but it’s never been “easy.” It wasn’t even that humid today and I was sweating buckets after the first half a mile. I know, I know, comparison is the thief of joy and I’m still a beginner and I'm faster than everyone on the couch and so on and so forth. BUT COME ON, I passed two women in sports bras with real life visible abs running the other way this morning. And here I am, huffing and puffing away like a dumpy little tea pot in compression shorts.
On the other hand, I’m kind of glad it’s hard. I mean, it’s not that hard - I don’t feel like barfing or dying during or after, there are awesome bits on almost every run, and oh yeah, that runners’ high. I live in a beautiful place and even if the weather is a little rough at times, it's not that rough. And it feels good to know that I started the day by doing something hard and kind of unpleasant. It sort of puts things in perspective.
On the other other hand, I do need to get my snacking under control, because running or not, I’ve regained about ten pounds since the beginning of May and that nonsense needs to stop. And to be clear, when your spouse tells you that they’re worried about having regained some weight, the correct response is not to scoff. At least not if you’re married to me.

I often run on an empty stomach, sometimes I drink part or all of a cup of coffee with vanilla or caramel protein shake mixed in. If I do eat I'll usually have a quarter to a half a pack of belVita Bites, maybe some blueberries and a string cheese - too much food prep in the AM isn't my jam. I do try and eat something before longer runs but I'm not sure I've noticed a difference other than this past weekend, but I wasn't exactly in fighting shape for a few reasons there.7 -

@MegaMooseEsq Did you at least stay upright? I fell on my run this morning. Skinned both knees and bruised my right hand. I was also huffing and puffing in my compression shorts too. So right there with you. I will never be fast. My place is 13-15 min mile depending. My goal is 10 some day!7

Oof, I have not fallen while running yet, but I am resigned that it will happen eventually - it seems to come with the territory. Sorry about your knees, and thank you for the encouragement!1 -

I would venture to guess that sooner or later EVERY runner has an unscheduled rapid lay down maneuver on their runs.11 -

Listen to THIS hand. This is the thing to remember on every run. You got this. It WILL get better if you put in the work and stay consistent. Hang in there.5 -

Repeat after me:
DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS.
Repeat until you comply
Seriously. I run a sub 10 on my easy runs. My wife runs more like 13 as a race pace. I can easily talk at sub-ten, she can bearly think at 13. If I were to judge her on *my* scale she is practically walking. But if I judge her on her scale she is doing great. She will likely never be a sub ten runner, at least not at any real distance. But that does not matter. What matters is she is doing great for her.
There are people *on this thread* that make me look like a pregnant turtle as far as pace goes. If I chased them and their records I would hate myself.
BUT when I compare to where I was when I started, I look like a flippen superman.
Running is about you and the course. You beat you. You beat the course, and the rest of us are here to cheer you on.

Also, consider this. I have run 1000s of miles per year. I have completed several marathons AND an ultramarathon. I have been running for fitness for about a decade now...
I. HAVE. NEVER. EXPERIENCED. THE. MYTHICAL. RUNNER'S. HIGH. Full stop.
Frankly, I think y'all are putting me on and it does not exist. Seriously, y'all are nuts.6 -
July goal: 80 miles
7/1: 7.6 miles
7/3: 4.2 miles
7/5: 4.6 miles
7/6: 4.3 miles
7/8: 7.1 miles
7/10: 4.5 miles
32.3/80 miles
I had a great 4.5 mile run this morning. It was a little cooler at 73F this morning, but the humidity was 91% and the dew point was 70 so I was really prepared for a difficult run. The first mile started out ok, and then I really got in the zone. I ran a pretty quick pace for me. Garmin said 11:04 miles/min and Strava said 10:57. I don't know why there was a discrepancy, but either way right at 11 miles per minute is good for me. I ran mile 2 and mile 4 in under 11 minutes. I felt fast and like I could just run forever!
@RunsOnEspresso On week days I usually run on just a cup of coffee with cream and sugar, but I have eaten peanut butter crackers before some of my longer runs on Sundays.
2018 races:
5/19/18: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - 2:43:59.7. - 2nd place AG
11/10/18: Wags & Whiskers 5K5 -
What do I eat before a run in the morning? Typically I don't need much/anything up to about 10k, but usually eat my 2/day brazil nuts and drink water or tea. If I'm going longer, racing or doing a speed workout, I go for some combination of oatmeal, banana, PB toast, and/or fried egg. This thread has definitely been making me hungry lately!
9k today. Part of that was with my early-morning friend. After we did C25k w6d1 (it's enough running that I count it in my totals now, except for the last walk interval when I paused the watch), I took off on my own and tried to push the pace a bit. I am at the point where I need to speed up my comfortable pace to be able to move forward towards some of my goals. But by the time I was working hard, coming up the hill out of the woods, I looked down at my watch and was still going too slow. Haha. I think it's that particular hill. I'm going to keep running it regularly until it gets easier to go fast the whole way through that trail section.
Upcoming race:
7/16 CityTrail OnTour 5k2 -

This....totally!
ETA:just finished the post above mine and gotta say you nailed it @PastorVincent . My wife has CP and her walking is not even so great some days, but then there are days when she can do a mile. Now running a straight mile for most of us on here is a non-issue but she gets so excited to get out and do anything. Sorry, got a little emotional for a sec. I love the days when she can go great and try to be supportive on the not-so-great days. She, however, kicks my butt if I don't get out there and at least try, because she has been to quite a few of my races and seen my face crossing the finish line. She knows as much as I whine about it, I love running. Miles apart in ability, but always supportive.8 -

nope, sorry, you are not a runner until you have proper faceplanted from tripping over a tree root.
I chose to do my first fall on a muddy path, thus kissing the ground and sticking my tongue in a black gritty mudslick.

@AprilRN10 Ouch! I'm sorry you got hurt! I hate falling, but I love trail running. Stumbles are common, but most of the time I catch myself before I hit the ground.
Speaking of tumbles, I went back to the lake and ran this morning. I ran 4 miles (walked 1 more) and while the running itself wasn't hard, it felt "wrong". I was just talking to my daughter about it and I think it was bad because I was so tense trying to avoid falling again. I'm really sore now and it just doesn't make sense. I ran 2 miles yesterday no problem. Anyway, I took a couple advil and hopefully will be ready to go again tomorrow.

@RunsOnEspresso I don’t eat before I run in the morning, only because I need to get out the door. If I’m feeling a bit yucky I might eat a half of protein bar. On the weekend, I might have a half bagel or English muffin.
@AprilRN10 ouch! I hope you are okay. @MegaMooseEsq unfortunately I think at one time or another we all trip and take a tumble. Especially if you run on trails. I have tripped over my own two feet while turning back to run after talking to someone, that’s embarrassing. My worst, as many here know, was a few months back I tripped over a speed bump in the dark fell and broke 4 ribs. Big ouch.
@PastorVincent “rapid lay down maneuver” ha ha!!!! I think I agree with you on the runners high, I’m not sure I would know what that is, perhaps like a unicorn. I’ve been really excited about a run, I’ve felt like I could run forever..is that it?
@girlinahat exactly, what out tree roots. After Skip fell hard on a trail run, she was bloody and laying in a bush and said “I’m a real trail runner” About 20 minutes later she pooped in the woods and she laughed and said “okay NOW I’m a real trail runner”

@5BeautifulDays Falling definitely sucks...thank goodness for phones with otterbox cases to protect them, although the legs and other hand got skinned up a little bit. Had 2 falls last year within about 2 months of each other. Darn the broken sidewalk...2
-
@PastorVincent I need your wife to come visit Edmonton as I need a running buddy and her pace is about the same as mine...
Re: falling, I mostly do that in the winter. Running on snow & ice is hard!
Re: morning run fuel, I run fasted most mornings when I run in the morning as I have medication that conflicts with eating (4 hour fast before, 30-60 minute fast after taking). I will do that for up to a 10K run.
Race mornings or longer runs I will get up, take my meds, set an alarm for 30 minutes, and then have 2 slices of PB toast OR a bowl of oatmeal with fruit and a giant coffee 2 hours before run time. I can cut that as short as 90 minutes or stretch it to 2.5 hours.
I'm so the opposite of a morning person, though. I would rather run at 10PM than 5 AM.
In other news, I failed to run at 5AM this morning so I will run home from work during thunderstorms. They aren't predicted to be severe. I bought some CLIF products to experiment with. If they work well I will try them for my longer run on Saturday too.
Also my warranty replacement for my Garmin shipped last night. Should arrive Thursday.4 -
Whoa! Had to take a few days "off" for another migraine, and almost 20 pages of posts fly by!
Today's run, well, lets just say eh. I had an appointment for my work insurance, so I had planned to get up there early, run along the Riverfront (usually one of my fave places to run), then do my weight out. Alarm never went off, so I had to do it backwards. As a result, it was much hotter, plus I forgot to do my inhaler before I ran. Oops! I struggled, but I still got my run & mileage in!
Run time: 0940, 85*F, 71% humidity, 74 DP
July goal: 20 miles
7/2 - 1.62
7/4 - 1.70
7/5 - 2.10
7/9 - 2.00
7/10 - 2.01 - 9.43 done - 10.57 remains

Aw, you all are great, thank you - I don’t think I can say how much I appreciate all your common sense and encouragement. I know comparing myself to others is a fast road to nowheresville - everyone’s at a different place and has their own troubles and triumphs. It’s not like I run to be the fastest or go the furthest or anything like that - I run because I enjoy it and it’s good for me. Thanks for the reminder, all.
@PastorVincent: I love the way you put things - “unscheduled rapid lay down maneuver” indeed. I remain extremely impressed by people who can stick to running even without the high or whatever you want to call that awesome rush of happy brain juice. I have a totally uncorroborated theory that people who are prone to certain types of anxiety may be more likely to experience a runner’s high and that some or all of the “good” feeling is simply an absence of the baseline level of stress we spend much of our lives experiencing. That’s how it often feels to me, at least.
ETA: All the falling stories are making me cringe, but also smile, because clearly you all got back up and kept going!3 -

@skippygirlsmom You are spot on... until you crash hard on the trail AND poop in the woods, you are not a "real" trail runner. Although you do not have to do both on the same run, I have experienced one leading to the other...

Morning all! Chatty today!
I've turned into a mornings person after having kids, so getting up at 5:30am to run is NBD. It also means I run before they are up for the day and I get to spend time with them after work.
I also agree with @PastorVincent only compare yourself to you. I keep reminding myself you don't know someone else's story, so you can't use it to compare. I only need to look back 6 months to see how far I've come!
My tummy is a bit better but still playing up. I had a gentle 6k this morning. I wanted to quit at 5, but pushed through. So that's 52km this month. That feels crazy! I can't believe I've run that far in less than 2 weeks!
I'm glad tomorrow is a rest day, and Friday is only 5k (I can't believe I say only 5k, like that's a warm up now). I'm tempted to push my long run to at least 10.5km but will see how I feel Saturday.6
