It's August!
Time for a new challenge.
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive and it get's very talkative. Miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still welcome to join us. No requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to keep you accountable and enjoy a virtual coffee with your fellow runners after you run. Make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the June 2018 Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10671082/june-2018-running-challenge/
Anyone can join in. New & Old. And if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members that are total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch.
Here are the details from last month that applies here again.
Anybody want to join me for a running challenge? Set a goal here and mark it every day here. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (If creating one seems difficult, then don't let that stop you. Just type in your daily miles here.)
You can run, walk, or do treadmill. Just be consistent. I am setting a goal for 100 miles. Don't let my high (or low) goal intimidate you. Some can do 25, 50; whatever you like. We can help motivate each other. What do you say? If you are new to running, set a low goal. (You can also log your miles in km's if you choose.) Also, if you rather log your progress by time rather than distance, you are free to do that as well.
You can set your goal now but wait until Sunday 1 July 2018 to start logging your runs.
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/21182-monthly-running-challange
(We also have a strava group and Facebook group.)
There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did. (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread) Keep a running tally of what you did this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chat it up even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things to include running. Very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time). Talk about a recent race or one coming up. Ask questions, provide answers, or just learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs, follow what many other people are doing. Even look at last month's thread that I posted above.
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker.
Then you need to update it after you do a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your pin in that you set when you created your ticker account.
Then where it says "Your current cumulative value, there is an add button. Just add what you just did and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
Now after you added your new miles (or km's) to your ticker you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting on how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the img tags around that link. So it will look, (removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets. ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker.
1: Use the link that ends in .png
2. Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
3. remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
4. YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow they are(unless you find a dead body- then you're a mere jogger). No judgment here. We all started somewhere. No comparisons, except to your former self. Don't compare my Chapter 20 to your Chapter 1.

good luck kids!!! (only posting here so I can be first!!!!)12

Ha @girlinahat - Thought I was going to be first to post my goal!
I am in for 75miles after way exceeding my goal last month I am going for a cutback, less mileage month especially with the heat expected and 2 weekend agility trials to attend.6 -
My goals for July were “running about 50 miles total, at least three times a week if practicable, my first race on July 4th(!). I expect that I'll break a 10 minute mile this month, which will be exciting, and I'll probably run my first 10k distance as well”. I hit 50 miles on the 27th, have run at least four times each week, made what I consider a respectable showing at my first 5k and planned/registered for two more between now and the October “bucket list” race, broke a ten minute mile on 7/3 and then realized that trying for speed was hurting my distance and enjoyment so dialed back to 11-12 minute miles, AND ran a sneeze over 10k on 7/14 with a repeat performance 7/21.
August is looking a little less flashy but I’m feeling good about continuing to push my distance and work out a good balance between running, lifting, and not being sore all the time. Because of how the weekends fall out I’m going to stick with 50 miles as my primary goal with 62.14 miles (aka 100K) as my stretch goal. My second 5K is the evening of August 25th and I suspect will be quite different from the 4th of July race, but hopefully still a good time. I’ve planned runs around three more lakes this month, with a fourth lake run scheduled for the first weekend of September that would also be my first 10 mile run. I don’t have anything longer than 8 miles planned for August but I am especially looking forward to my planned 8 mile run out to the Mississippi river and along the banks a few miles.
My other fitness goals are to continue to lift twice a week (I should hit 100 lbs on my deadlift in August, which is pretty dang cool) and to do at least an hour of stretching every week. I’m signed up for a yoga for runners class on the first weekend of August and hopefully that will lead to more stretching and less soreness. Along those lines, I’m also aiming for at least two full rest days per week.15 -
I'm in for 175 again11
-
August goal is 100-115 miles. And get faster.
And not revive dead threads.15 -
@RunsOnEspresso - good try though6
-
I’m in for August. 2018 has been a heckuva year so far - pregnancy loss, cancer, stress eating, and weight gain, but I’m ready to get back on track and in control.
Goals for the month:
- continue working through c25k (again)
- Don’t push too hard/injure myself
- Log food, stop gaining, start (re)losing weight
- 20 miles running
- Keep up with this thread25 -
Hey everyone, just popping in to say good luck to all my running buddies! I managed to injure my hip YET AGAIN so August might be a little iffy for me. My main goal this month is to find a pair of shoes or orthotics that won't give me this !@#$% hip pain.
I'll mostly be watching from the sidelines and trying not to get too discouraged or jealous of all the mileage y'all put in. Cheers!19 -
@eponine1984! So good to see you check in. I've thought of you often and hoped you were doing okay. Welcome back and good luck with your goals for this month.
@RespectTheKitty good to see you as well. I hope you can find the answer to your hip pain problems.4 -
In for 125km this month after meeting my goal of 120 for July.8

No muckin' about! I've got a Bridge to show just who's boss this year!
Last year I did the 1st annual Ft Hamer Bridge run, and I had the worst ever 5K performance I've ever done. I could make so many excuses, but I was ill prepared, not in the right frame of mind, and just thought I could "fake" it through. I "trained" by doing a casual jog, a mile here, mile & 1/2 there, if I felt up to it. Yes, the weather did play a part, but *I* was the main reason why I did so poorly.
August goals:
30 miles
2nd Annual Ft Hamer Bridge 5K
To do a better time: prev time 44:56, 14.48 pace
_______________________
8/25/2018 - Ft Desoto Bridge Run 5K (to beat: 44:56, 14.48)

I'm in for another month! Have been dealing with some foot pain and am contemplating taking a week or so off, so I won't set a mileage goal for the month until I figure out what my plan is!11
-
Hey guys, I was just wondering if you could post the link to the strava group. I am looking to do about 220km in August.4
-
I am not dead! I did not float away in flash floods, nor blow away in tornadoes! July was rough around here. I have had to scrap full marathon plans due to too many missed long runs already However, still planning to do a half or two this fall. Goal for August is to get in all my long runs and a mileage total of 110.
Good luck, all!!15 -
After a big overreach in July, I am going to set my August goal to only 100 miles. This is just to keep my base, and to try to help my body to heal going into September's marathon training.
Oh, and I just want to give a HUGE shout-out to @AlphaHowls for putting in 502 miles in July!!!!
Didn't want it to get lost in the old July thread. That is superhuman, no matter how you look at it!13 -
I'll be in for 50. i want it but i'm lazy.

And hello to you on the sidelines @RespectTheKitty - good to see your face (am stalking your kitties on IG)
Off again now peeps.

-

Base Building for Quarter Marathon October.
Continue to rehab.
Get up and run early. (It could hapen)
A very ambitious 85 mile month.11 -
Hi! I would like to join this thread. I'm a beginning runner, recently started C25K.
August goal: 25 miles
17 -
Morning all!
I set a goal of 90km for July and ended up crushing it and doing 130!! So I'm going to aim for 140 this month, a small increase of about 0.5km per run so easy done. Im going to increase my long run by 1km each weekend so doing 14 km by the end of August.
I'm going to try keep a running total but I'm useless at that so will use strava for my running total.13 -
Hi there! I’m a beginning runner, and my August goal is 25 miles. Also, more activity, cleaner eating, and a positive mindset.12
-
I'm in for a minimum of 40 with a stretch goal of 50. I'd also like to work toward a 10K long run by the end of the month.14
-
Hi everyone,
I am in.
My August challenge is 24 miles.12 -
Still running on a treadmill only (I have reasons). I look to do 5 5k's a week. Don't want or need to do more. Want to bring down my time. In January, was back up to 230 (now 210), don't enjoy running, so never ran as a kid or adult. Started in January at 30 minutes. Today was 21:20. Goal for August is 20:00.13
-
I do not get it... it was a nice day. Like 70 degrees and cloudy. Not perfect, but compared to the triple digits we were getting it was nice... so why were people on the dreadmill in the gym, when literally just outside the door is a nice park to run in?10
-
thanks @shanaber BTW, it is a continuation of the July thread, not June 2018 thread....
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10678103/july-2018-running-challenge
I will try for 150 miles again I guess.7 -
200 mile goal (minimum) for August. *yeah, you already know*
500 may have been a one time thing, stars, moon, sun aligned, yatta yatta yatta....
Oh, and I just want to give a HUGE shout-out to @AlphaHowls for putting in 502 miles in July!!!!
Didn't want it to get lost in the old July thread. That is superhuman, no matter how you look at it!
Thank you! I appreciate it!14
