I wonder why it works for some people though.
Because the only way you lose weight is by consuming less calories than you expend. Period.
Well if it helps to curb appetite, then it does help in weightloss.
What if I told you there was no proof that it helps to curb appetite?
Doesn't green tea have caffine in it ?0 -

Some caffeine, yes. Caffeine makes me jittery and my brain interprets that as hungry. So for me, green tea could cause weight gain. I wouldn't go so far as to make that a universal claim for all people.1 -

Yes. Somewhere around 15-25% of the amount of caffeine found in coffee. And there's no evidence that coffee significantly affects weight loss either. But I suppose if you wanted to drink a few gallons of green tea per day, it may speed up your metabolism enough to maybe amount to burning an extra 10-15 calories or so per day. Which is far inside the error you'll find in measuring your foods, even with a food scale.
Caffeine has been found to be mildly helpful with weight loss. But the amounts used are far in excess of what you'd get from drinking a cup (or even a few cups) of green tea. The green tea thing is just another silly Dr. Oz myth, like raspberry ketones, green coffee bean extract, hoodia, etc..8 -

The taste of ACV itself would kill my appetite, so you’re right there. But it still does nothing for weight loss.

There is some evidence that ACV helps but its because it makes you nauseous. So drinking it can make you feel sick and not comsume calories in ab litibum eating, lol.
Correct: https://www.nature.com/articles/ijo2013157Conclusions:
These studies indicate that vinegar ingestion enhances satiety whereas orosensory stimulation alone does not, and that these effects are largely due to poor tolerability following ingestion invoking feelings of nausea. On this basis the promotion of vinegar as a natural appetite suppressant does not seem appropriate.9 -

Caffeine is in diet pills because it makes you feel energetic and maybe a little jumpy, which makes people think their metabolism has been increased. Most things "work" because once you've spent money on losing weight, you try harder to stick to your diet and exercise plans, and THAT is what causes you to lose weight. Plus the placebo effect.
I do feel that caffeine can be a mild appetite suppressant, but I doubt it's universal, and rather than waste money on diet products, I just drink a cup of coffee.
You know all those clickbait articles and ads that say "The one weight loss tip THEY don't want you to know!". "They" is the diet industry, and the "tip" is that you don't have to buy anything to lose weight. :drinker:
And on topic, intermittent fasting is free! You don't have to buy special food or drink anything nasty, just try an eating window and see if it helps6 -

Many people, myself included, feel like water helps control appetite and if I am not hungry I am less likely to have cravings. Any low calorie drink might do the same for you or maybe you really do respond to caffeine, I don't know.
I have had 3 cups of coffee and 2 glasses of ice tea the last 2 months. I do drink more hot tea in cooler months but even then it is not daily. I lose weight just fine.
I don't think it really matters what you believe helps you as long as you don't lose sight of what drives weight loss which is staying in a calorie deficit. The calorie deficit is the engine that powers the movement of the car where coffee, intermittent fasting, etc., are accessories like a radio which might make the journey a little easier.

I'm fairly sensitive to caffeine. Why is that surprising? I can consume large quantities over time and adapt, but I don't see what point that would serve.5 -
caffeine is in diet pills to counteract what the body generally does on a diet - slows down.
drinking a bunch of green tea is just an attempt to keep your TDEE where it normally would be without the diet going on.
I recall one study, a quick search didn't find it - where green tea was used with people at normal maintenance eating levels, and therefore normal levels of movement, fidgeting, ect.
No weight loss. Their TDEE didn't go up.
And some magical metabolism boost didn't happen, nor some magical extra fat burner occur.
Now if you have taken a deficit such that your body is attempting to compensate by slowing you down (perhaps that means deficit is too much frankly) - then the stimulates to keep you moving at normal levels would be useful to keep the deficit.
Then again - how long does it take the body to compensate by some other means if it really was wanting/needing to?
Is that when the hair stops growing and nails start falling out?5 -

You seem to be searching for the "magic pill" that will help your weight loss. There isn't one. There are fads and things that get trendy but the bottom line is eating less calories than you burn. The sooner one gets focused on that and not all the gimmicks, the sooner you start seeing results.
Things like caffeine and other gimmicks give you a <.5% advantage if at all. Intermittent fasting can be an advantage for some to hit calorie goals. Not for others. Some people try to make it more complicated than that but it's not.8 -

I would recommend you drink apple cider vinegar and green tea during your fasted period. Both are great for curbing hunger, especially apple cider vinegar. They are also both great detoxers. Some days I fast for nearly 24 hours with minimal hunger by consuming both of those. Also, if you do buy apple cider vinegar I would recommend you dilute it with water and drink it with a straw. ACV can be a little rough on your teath so drinking it with a straw will help minimize contact with your teeth. The first week or two are the most difficult to overcome but then your body gets use to it and it's almost effortless. It will feel more like a lifestyle change in eating habits. Continue monitoring calories during during your eating window which is obvious we are all doing, being that that's the whole purpose of this app haha. @SuzOh
Thanks, I'll try that.17 -

You can try an earlier eating window (don't eat late instead of not eating early) or maybe it just isn't right for you. The key is finding a way of eating (meal schedule, macro distribution, etc) that makes it as easy as possible for you to hit the right calories and feel energetic and happy. There's no one right way. I drifted into IF when I realized I was basically forcing myself to eat breakfast. So I just started eating at lunchtime. But recently I found myself starving every morning, so I went back to eating breakfast. Hasn't changed my calorie needs at all. Good luck!
It's only been a few days so I won't let my hangry moments deter me yet. It's definitely making it easier to stay within my daily calorie and macro goals.2 -
I stated doing the 5:2 last week along we low carbs / no dairy... Today is actually one of my fast day.. last week I lost 6.5 lbs.. not sure that I will have the same result this week but Im hopping a least -2 or -3 lbs .5

Yes, sounds like the same protocol for any eating plan. I will be happy with -2 lbs per week though. Let see how I do when I weigh myself Saturday.2 -

I wonder why it works for some people though.
Because the only way you lose weight is by consuming less calories than you expend. Period.
Well if it helps to curb appetite, then it does help in weightloss.
What if I told you there was no proof that it helps to curb appetite?
Doesn't green tea have caffine in it ?
Oz myth, like raspberry ketones, green coffee bean extract, hoodia, etc..
There has to be some truth to caffeine curbing appetite that's why it's in a lot of weight loss pills.
I know if I drink coffee my appetite and cravings are gone..and Diet Coke.
Some people try to make it more complicated than that but it's not.

I think you should read back through the last 20 post or so. There are no little tricks that have any impact in an way that is not very subjective and really based on preference. Coffee might give you a little (nervous) energy but there is no evidence it curbs appetite. This stuff is all woo except as it relates to your preference and keeps you in plan.
Coffee and a little carbs gives me great focus for a great weight training session. Protein and high fiber carbs gives me high dietary satiety. Are there people like me? A few. But more not.
Each individual has to work out what works best for them and there are no shortcuts. There is not universal application for things like ACV and green tea. Or even coffee for that matter. I think you are just barking up the wrong tree. Multiple people with lots of experience have told you this. But you keep coming back with "yeah but....". Ok, go spend a lot of time to find out for yourself what others already have. People are giving you the benefit of their hard earned experience but you are disputing it. So, go find out for yourself.

I will.add ome note so we try to get back on topic, power of the placebo is real... And is very powerful. Sometimes believing something is working, can help keep you focused. There isnt evidence that supports BCAAs help with recovery, but people believe it does... And they keep taking it because they are making gains.3 -
2nd day of intermittent fasting. I'm doing 14/10 (read it was better than 16/8 for women) and so far I'm just really hungry. @SuzOh
Thanks, I'll try that.
This is what you decided to go with after reading all the advice in the thread?15 -

There has to be some truth to caffeine curbing appetite that's why it's in a lot of weight loss pills.
I know if I drink coffee my appetite and cravings are gone..and Diet Coke.
Some people try to make it more complicated than that but it's not.
You’re wrong 😊I’m not looking for diet pills. I’ve lost 30 pounds thus far with exercise and eating everything I like.
Not diet pills. You missed my point. The "magic pill". The trick. Apple Cider Vinegar, green tea, IF. Those are all "magic pills". Possibly I'm wrong but you've argued for their effectiveness. Reread the part I bolded from my post above. Great that you've lost 30 lbs already with diet and exercise! That is the real way to do it and not green tea and ACV. That is my point.
That's the real way to do it but who doesn't have little tricks and help with little things like that throughout weight loss journey.
My little thing is to drink coffee for a boost of engery and to curb my appetite. The same might be for people who suggest green tea and ACV.
I am the evidence and proof that it curbs MY appetite... it helps me suppress my appetite boost my energy to stay on the elliptical a bit more longer thus making me burn more calories and then boom, weight loss. ( are you going to tell me the elliptical will hurt my knees now? )

This is applies perfectly to the "no scientific evidence committee" that patrols the forums.
What’s the alternative, though? People spending money on things that at best don’t work, and at worst are potentially harmful? For example, Yacon is a tuber that is supposed to be a pre-biotic that suppresses appetite. My office mate was drinking tea made from the leaves. There is research the leaves (not the tuber) cause renal toxicity. She had no idea about that, she likes tea, heard about the alleged benefits of the plant, and found some tea online. The research population was rats, but do we really want to try this out on humans?
I’ve seen people for years, here and in real life, who try unproven fad after fad with only temporary results (if any). And the damage to their self-esteem and self-worth after all those failed attempts is painfully obvious.
Our culture is to look for the quick fix, or “magic pill.” And it can be really hard for folks to know whose website or “research” is credible when they are starting out and trying to decide what approach will work best. Without the challenges to credibility, the “woo” will stand and people coming here for help might not get what they need.
Even something like IF, is suddenly attributed with magical properties. It can really help folks achieve a calorie deficit, or reach macros, but an eating window does not make you magically lose weight if there’s no calorie deficit. I do IF, and it works because I know what I’m consuming, calorie and macro-wise. I get occasional hunger pangs, but the’re perfectly manageable when I notice them. Just because I’m doing IF doesn’t mean I can eat 4000 calories a day, even if they are in my window.
Well said!
A lot of people come to MFP with very incorrect, misguided and misinformed ideas about weight loss because of the woo peddled all over the internet, magazines, tv/radio advertisements, etc. And some of those people will preach those things with an evangelical furor. All kinds of "miracle" diet/exercise regimens, supplements, cleanses, detoxes, "jump starts", spot reducing, etc. There are a lot of knowledgeable and experienced users here who will attempt to point them in the right direction to keep them from wasting their time and money on fads and quackery. That doesn't make them "negative people" or "haters". They're generous for donating their time, education and knowledge to help people and give them realistic, useful information rather than letting them continue to wander around blindly, trying fad after fad which won't work.7 -

I agree with you 100% that you still have to eat at a coloric deficit with IF. Everyone doing IF and using this app is tracking calories. That's the whole purpose of this app. However, I'm having much better results with my weight loss this time implemeting IF for weight loss than I did roughly 3 years ago when I first used MyFitnessPal to track calories. My caloric limit is the same as I had it 3 years ago but with the addition of IF I'm losing weight faster and still improving on my workouts. It's obvious to me and to hundreds of thousands of people doing IF, in addition to eating at a caloric deficit, that it helps to speed up weight loss.13 -

What exactly is nonsensical?- Is it the idea that hormone levels cycle throughout the day?
- Is it that insulin levels are naturally lower in the morning?
- Is it that certain foods/substances can trigger insulin spikes?
- Is it that these hormone cycles have an impact on weight management?
- Is it all of it?
- Is it something else?
As it pertains to this thread (to stay on topic), I think what's specifically being called into question is the "clean fasting" nonsense:
1) That IF is only effective if you "clean fast".
2) That anything with flavor spikes insulin.
3) That your body cannot heal in the presence of insulin.
4) That it takes 3 weeks for your body to "adjust and start healing itself".
And subsequently:
5) That the body needs a "rest" from feeding.
I haven't seen any of your points addressed or argued either way.
I never said it was only effective with a clean fast. It's what the clean fast does. sorry I'm not good at explaining stuff. I'm trying but everything gets so jumbled in my brain, it's hard.
Anytime you start a diet your body has to adjust to it. I'm not sure what's so crazy about that.
"The science behind it is really cool. But only when you clean fast."
This sounds like you're claiming that IF has specific documented benefits and those benefits are only available to those who are "clean fasting."
As in the science behind IF with clean fasting is cool.
You have not been able to produce a single piece of science so far.
I haven't been able to or I'm just not because I don't have to lol if you actually wanted to know you would research it yourself.
All the research in the world isn't going to give us insight into what specific things you were thinking of when you made that claim. You're asking us to do research to figure out what you meant.
One of the first things I said when i posted about clean fasting was to research it yourself. Pretty easy to do.
People are asking what you meant. Since the research is easy to do, it should be very easy for you to post links to what made your mind up. Then we can all discuss the same information and progress in the conversation.
All you've done so far is cite Dr Axe and post a blog link. If those aren't the things that convinced you that "clean fasting" has specific benefits, what did?
A lot of hours on google and talking to my doctor.
The same Google that led you to that Dr. Axe link? Do you see the issue here?
Access to information is useless without a corresponding willingness and/or ability to critically evaluate that information. Hours on Google are also capable of convincing people that lizard people are the secret power behind all world governments and religions.
Sorry hit post to soon and it wouldn't let me on.
A lot of hours on google. Not clicking the first link and agreeing with it. I don't blindly follow anyone or anything. I also read multiple people's stories having done it. My doctor is the same man who has time and again told me not to do fad diets and the like. He wouldn't let me do something if he even slightly thought bad of it.
I never understood people who asked for sources. If i didn't understand something I wouldn't ask for sources.. I'd research it myself.
Hours on Google can't convince you of that unless you're really into conspiracy theories.
Someone who is passionate and educated on a subject is usually able to provide information for those who want to learn more. They tend to remember learning about it themselves and are able to recall the specific studies, arguments, or sources that convinced them that a certain approach or POV was correct. If someone has good reasons for believing what they believe, sharing the justification for their belief isn't a hardship. It's actually relatively easy for people with a solid argument to recreate the learning that took place to get them there.
You don't follow anything blindly. Okay. So what convinced you?
Maybe you should start asking people for sources when they recommend things to you. It's an excellent tool to help you evaluate their argument and you're able to bypass simply having faith in what people tell you. Your doctor, for instance. Did you ask him why he thought IF was a good idea? Maybe it would have been helpful for you to understand how he came to his conclusion that it was a good idea for you to do it. Not only would you have a better understanding of your own way of life, it would be easy for you to communicate why you're doing it to people who have never met your doctor and have no reason to be impressed by what he does or doesn't recommend.
If someone tells you something that doesn't seem quite right, asking "Why do you think that?" is usually much more productive than just doing your own research.
I can't communicate properly. About anything. Ever. Speaking in general is a hardship for me. You have no idea how hard it is for me. So for me, researching for myself is easier. So is telling people flat out to research for themselves to cut things short and save my head. Because everything is too much.
My doctor and I did talk about it. He used big words. Basically said the health benefits of it were great for me.
I'm sorry for your troubles.
I will say in the research I've done about IF, I don't see any reliable evidence that it offers specific benefits for the general public. There are people who find it easier to control their calorie intake when they use IF and that makes it a benefit for them in weight management. But as far as the rest of the claims made for it, I don't see anything supporting the more dramatic claims being made for it. Big words or not, some people are getting way ahead of what seems to be currently documented.
Lots of scientific research and peer reviewed literature out there in regards to the health benefits of fasting. What dramatic claims are you referring to?

You should probably learn when to let things go. If a person is being safe in their approach and they understand that a calorie deficit drives weight loss how much does the rest matter? There is a portion of sustainability that exists in our heads anyway and I think that is where we should walk away and let a person be. I have no scientific evidence to back up my claim that occasional treats will improve my sustainability. I don't need any or want any to be frank. I do believe that feeling deprived hurt my efforts in the past. I am okay with the fact that is all in my head.
