Did a really slow 2 miles this morning...slower and shorter than planned because my beautiful 7th and 8th graders decided to join me. I burned more calories encouraging them to "run a little slower", "keep running!", or "try leading with your left foot to avoid that stitch in your side!" than I did with actual running. My boy is in scouts and needs to log "official" exercise for his next rank (they don't let you count jumping up and down like a spring while playing Mario for some reason). My girl is a competitive cheerleader--she's really strong! But she can't seem to figure out pacing herself. She's either too fast or wiped out...I don't know how to help her find that sweet spot where she can build up some endurance.
Good job on your half, @sarahthes !

I was out in a remote wilderness area for the last 9 days, without any internet except a couple times when I left briefly. Anyway, I am not going back to read the nearly 600 posts in this thread. And I was very busy with an intense class to get the Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification. I didn't get as much running on the trails as I wanted because I was quite busy, but hope to ramp up mileage again. I don't think I'll make goal this month, though.
Ticker is updated for the 39.87 miles I was actually able to get done.

8/19 - 21.1 km
55.71/125 km
I was right - it wasn't pretty LOL.
The smoke cleared out late yesterday, thankfully. It's likely not to be back until Tuesday evening.
I got up at 5:15, popped my pills, then had coffee & PB toast at 5:45. Lots of running around and getting ready. Hubby dropped me off downtown just before they closed the roads at 7:45 and then took the kids out for breakfast back close to home while I walked back and back and back to find an entrance to the starting chute. Took a selfie. The announcer mentioned that the elites for the full marathon were on pace to finish around 2:20.
I positioned myself well to the back because I am slow. This proved to be a bit of a terrible idea in hindsight because there were a lot of walkers I had to weave around.
Kept a pace I knew was too fast basically until the first aid station (2.5 km). I was almost at the aid station when the motorcade came through with the marathon lead runner. Someone in second came by about a minute later and then there was a lull before a bunch of elites came thru, plus fast people without bike pacers etc.
I slowed down to a more reasonable race pace after that, running fast (my fast, not anybody else's fast!) but comfortable and feeling generally awesome despite knowing I was undertrained. Kept a decent pace until around 12 km? I think it was 12 km. I had gone in with a plan to run as much as I could while walking thru aid stations to catch my breath, hydrate and fuel. Anyway, around 12 km I started getting really bad calf cramps. I alternated walking and running okay until about 15 km. At that point I was walking more than running probably until 18 km (Garmin says that is my slowest split).
I decided to try running again and found a sweet spot about 30 seconds slower than my LSR pace and was able to maintain that mixed with walk intervals for the last 3 km. I actually found the running less painful than walking - problem is if I did more than my body was capable of I could feel my calves start to seize and had to back off to a walk until the feeling eased.
I finished around 3:12 and change, but I finished. And I'm pretty proud of that accomplishment because I'm 15 lbs heavier than my last race and didn't die.
Now to baby my blisters and very mild chafing (from my fuel belt).

It was pretty warm and humid this morning, so I took things easy, but tomorrow the wind's supposed to come in from the north and bring cooler temps (low 70s) and a much lower dew point. That's going to be a pleasant run with the group. Wednesday is supposed to be more of the same, so I'll aim to get a nice tempo run in before rounding things off on Thursday with another easy run with the group. After that, I'm on call for a week, so whatever mileage I manage to get then will be anyone's guess.

Woke up to thunder and lightning... so I stalked the weather page and saw that it would clear out by 9am so I waited it out even though doing a short run on the treadmill crossed my mind.
I’m glad I waited. I got a good interval run in. About halfway in the sun came out and made it pretty steamy.
Afterwards I took the kids to the beach for the afternoon. Probably the last beach day of the summer, my kids go back to school next Monday!!

@workaholic_nurse You must live in my neck of the woods. I'm in the Greeneville TN area. I'm not up to running 10 miles right now, as I am just trying to get back into running, but the pace would be perfect for me. Maybe next year.4

My folks live in Jonesborough, gonna be up for the weekend visiting and @Teresa502 suggested this trail the last time I mentioned I was looking for places to run up there. Did a 6.2 out and back 2 weeks ago on the trail, thoroughly enjoyed it. Figured even if I have to take it slow/steady I know I can do the mileage. Looking forward to next year
ETA:Eventually I'll be able to run it the other direction but at this point doing a steady uphill over 10 miles just sounds like too much work.1 -
It has been raining all afternoon, and I had therapy clients this evening after my full time job, so I am taking today as a rest day. I tell myself that since I’m not running, I will fold some laundry. I really hate laundry.5

I've been away for a few days, so just reading quickly to catch up. Sorry if I missed any races or big news. I gathered some things about plans for running for Dennis, but will have to go back and see exactly what is being done and how I can contribute. I know he ran Marine Corps Marathon, so one thing I can do is "run in his shoes" in that race this October. That will add even more to this big event for me, to think of him running that same route.

Awesome job on your age-group place in your 5k @BruinsGal_91! Impressive!
Fantastic work @zdyb23456 getting in your longest run ever! Well done! If you can do that, you can definitely finish a marathon.
@polskagirl01 congratulations on your half marathon. How cool is that dragonfly experience! Well done getting through it and especially kicking it at the end. Awesome.
@sarahthes congratulations on finishing your half marathon too! Sorry to hear about the cramping and blisters and chafing. Good for you for getting it done.
@eponine1984 hugs to you. Glad you were able to enjoy a little bit of running that felt good to you.
@girlinahat good to see you back early and feeling like you want to run. Gorgeous place to get your airplane arms on and go whee!
I'll do a separate race post in a bit.4 -
@workaholic_nurse Jonesborough is an awesome little town. Ever been to the storytelling festival? I've leaved here most of my life and have never been. It's on my list.0

Just back from Cape Cod today, where I had a fabulous time and ran the 7 mile Falmouth Road Race. A group of 14 of us road tripped out there and stayed in a house - which barely accommodated us, but we made it work! I slept in an awful twin bed in the basement, which was the worst part, but other than that it was so fun. We took a trip over to Martha's Vineyard, ate lots of lobster, drank mudslides, and generally laughed a lot for 3 days.
The race was Sunday (yesterday) and we got super lucky with the weather. The day before had been hot and so sticky as we walked around Martha's Vineyard. But the day of the race it was actually quite cool, so much that I wished I had long sleeves before we started but didn't want to carry anything. It will still a touch humid, but nothing like it had been and it was pretty great running weather. The race was big, with over 11,000 people, and the route was gorgeous along the coast. There were some hills in the first 3 miles but not too terrible, and then one at the end that was kind of cruel just before the finish - plus they had cameras set up to take pictures as you struggled up it. Can't wait to see that! It was pretty crowded but they did a pulse start which helped a lot in spreading things out at least a bit.
I decided to just see how I felt as to whether I'd run for a good time or just stick with my pack of friends for a total fun run. With the weather being so good (other than a head wind off the ocean in some places), I decided as soon as I got going that I would go for it. Four of the fastest of our group took off ahead and I couldn't hang with them at all, and most of the rest hung back, so I headed out on my own. I made minimal checks to my watch but the pace felt good and sustainable to me, so I kept on. After getting through mile 4, I was even more confident that I could keep it up. I really enjoyed the views and seeing all the crowd support the whole way. The final mile was my fastest, even with the hill - and right after the top of the hill we coasted down to the finish line. There was an enormous flag hanging from fire truck ladders over the road, which was an impressive thing to see and go for at the end. I gave it my best and finished in 1:10, which I was pretty happy with as a 10:03 average pace. I was especially happy being able to do that after my longest run ever on Thursday.
The finish area was so jam packed, but well organized - they herded us quickly down the street (no stopping!) along to the big tents with food. They had a meetup area arranged with sections marked by letters of the alphabet, and we had already determined to meet under C, so I was able to find my group quickly. The hardest part of the whole day was having to walk 2 miles back to our car and then getting stuck in all the race traffic. Other than that, it was all amazing and maybe my favorite race so far.
I'm off to my own very comfortable bed now to hopefully sleep like a rock. It will be a busy rest of the week catching up and then I have the 18.12 Challenge race this Sunday - which means that I have a new longest distance of 18 miles coming up in less than a week. A little terrified, to be honest, but it will be an excellent test of how my marathon prep is coming. I'll be doing a mini taper this week and practicing a lot of the logistics (fuel, clothes, hydration, etc) that I will want to do for Marine Corps. Then no more races after the big event.

@katharmonic great race report. I know a couple of people who ran Falmouth yesterday. It's on my bucket list.
And you went to the Vineyard too (yes, of course I'm jealous). I'm toying with running the half marathon there again next May.3 -
@katharmonic welldone!1

@katharmonic that sounds like a great race and venue. The pre-race activities and food sound awesome.1

Saturday's yoga followed by Sunday's trail event left me surprisingly perky for yesterday's run... or so I thought. I'm on taper for a half this Saturday and had to keep reminding myself to slow down so had a pleasant "jog" around the neighbourhood, however, when I got to yoga last night my hips and quads were super tired and quite tight. Full day's rest today, yoga and massage tomorrow (should have been today but delayed as I had a child home sick), then a seriously short and gentle run on Thursday should leave me full of beans on Saturday. That is, if I don't catch the lurgy that has currently befallen the family (fingers, toes and all other small appendages very tightly crossed).

I made my August goal!!! 😃✨🎉💥😃
I haven't been running in 4 years so I really did think 25 miles would be a challenge. I'm so proud of myself!! WooHoo!14 -
I have finally entered the Auckland Half on October 28th. This is a hilly course but nothing too severe - the Harbour Bridge is the longest hill but has amazing views across the city to distract you (and this event is the only time you can cross it on foot).
I'm following this with the Xterra Trail Challenge Waihi just three weeks later - 20.5km of "breath-taking riverside trails alongside the natural gorge, historic railway tracks (complete with tunnels - torches/headlamps compulsory) and all wrapped up in native bush." What they don't shout about is the 980m of elevation and its 8/10 toughness factor. Could be a full on day!
I'm hoping to PB Auckland (sub 1:50 ideally but with a field of up to 7000, the sheer volume of people can play havoc with finishing times, especially if you have a bad start like I did last year - it's a ferry ride to the start line and our boat sat on the water for about 40 minutes for reasons unknown which had us running from the terminal and straight across the start line - no last minute coffee or loo stops - about seven minutes after the gun went off and behind thousands of walkers and slower runners!!)
For Waihi, my plan is to not die. To enjoy the view, the tunnels, the swing bridges and have a pleasant day out!
Not as mad as some of you, but a pretty full on month for me!! I can't wait.8
