I'll join the "low cut sock hater therapy group" - I just don't get it!
Well, I was ready with all kinds of comments and responses which I'm sure were positively life changing and full of wit and wisdom - and poof - one stroke of the wrong button and they're gone.
It was a beautiful 56 degrees here this morning - talk about perfect running weather! This weekend? Predicting 100 heat index. Blech.
Now to go find my info so I can post. Grrrr.

3 slow easy miles for me today, bringing my August total to 26.2 - I ran a marathon this month! First time pushing my tiny human in the jogging stroller and it went okay - only had to stop to retrieve shoes and his water cup and the plastic fork and knife he refuses to go anywhere without....
My husband ran with us - he’s at the beginning of C25k but he runs faster than me. I might’ve gotten angry about that. (Angry outbursts is one of the ways my anxiety manifests.)
We’re all good now, but we’ll have to figure out how to make running a family event.

70,000 km ?!?!?! YOU ARE A BEAST!!! A very fast beast!
Or maybe that was a typo?

Lol
Oh man. And here I was worried about getting the ticker graph on. Thanks
I think I need more carbs for my brain.
Does it look normal now?
Still can't get the graphic on just the link Can't win here
Did you get it figured out? I don't mess with the ticker any more. You figure your monthly walking goal? 70km maybe?
I think y'all missed the original post from @travelling_lots.travelling_lots wrote: »Hi everyone,

So it's 70,000 steps actually
As far as the ticker goes, you just copy everything inside (and including) the

Hate those low cut sock too!
I've gone to the quarter socks. I was lucky enough to go through a spell the low cut ones worked. For some reason now they dont. Except i picked up some cheap Fila athletic socks at tj maxx a few years back. If i can find them again, I'll grab more. Fine sock for the price.1 -
That is why I get my socks in crew! My son like the low cut socks, but he is not a runner, so I guess he can get away with it.2

Gear... for typical summer run:
Under Armour Men's Igniter 2.0 Storm Polarized Sunglasses ($123 currently on Amazon)
Under Armour Men's Launch Run 9" Shorts ($32 currently on Amazon)
Under Armour Men's HeatGear SuperVent Armour Tank ($29 currenly on Amazon)
Under Armour Heatgear Crew Socks ($17 currentlyu on Amazon)
Under Armour Men's HeatGear Armour CoolSwitch Compression Shorts ($21 Currently on Amazon)
Sacouny RIde 10 Wide Shoes - $120 at time of purchase, currently discontinued
Plantronics BackBeat FIT Wireless Bluetooth Workout Headphones ($71 Currently on Amazon)
Body Glide ($10 currently on Amazon)
Garmin Forerunner 935 ($430 currently on Amazon)
So that all comes to: $853 for this inexpensive simple sport. And I am not even including the water bottles, pack, clif bloks... Some times I switch out nike socks or what ever, but doubt that has much impact on price.
Winter is much worse....
Yep, glad I kept it cheap!

I wouldn't touch Under Armour with a ten foot pole.4
-
Them's some fancy sunglasses! Mine were free swag from the UT eye center which sponsored a race. They're the same brand that's often sold in running stores.5
-
I spend my money on shoes. Shoes are the only thing runners need to spend serious money on. Shorts? Tops? Socks? Seriously... I've tried dozens of brands ranging from $35 for tech shirt to $5... difference in performance? Not a damn thing. UA and Nike are the absolute worst for gouging people for a name brand... some the best shlt I have I picked up for $5 on clearance at Walmart.9

They are the darkest glasses I could find. There are actually 1% darker than my Oaklys which used to be the darkest I could find. Polarized and they meet or exceed ANSI safety standards so when I am being a stupid clutz and fall on my face or take a branch to my face they protect my eyes completely.
For me, that makes them well worth their price.4 -

That has not been my experience, not even close, but to each their own. THAT is one of the great things about this sport, it is very individualized. I do buy on clearance (just got new shoes for $60!!! Got the Garmin on sale too, way less, and so on.) so my actual outlay is likely less than that listing but I do not track it, so just going with current pricing for now1 -

Wow... I could not fathom paying that much for sunglasses... I can't even figure out why people wear them for trail runs... when I try wearing them, I trip all over sneaky cobwebs and snail tracks...1 -
I kinda love my UA raceback. It's green and very soft and I love it. On the other hand, my favorite sports bras are from Walmart's Avia house brand, they control bounce much better than more expensive bras I have tried.4

I am very light sensitive. The noon sun gives me a headache. I could not see without ultra dark glasses like this. For me, I would never have a chance to see the roots without the glasses as the glare would blind me.

Oh, I save $20 buy running in my trail shoes...
Altra Men's Lone Peak 3.5 Trail Running Shoe ( $100 currently on Amazon)
So there is that.0 -

I have some UA running gear and it fits better with no chafing than some of my cheaper stuff.
But the UA heatgear I bought last winter for $$$ I barely used - the $20 fleece-lined Champion brand tights I got at Costco were way better. I also like my cheap sports bras from Costco the best of the ones I'm currently using even if the pink one does dye my skin when I sweat.
I try to stack sales with coupon codes and/or package pickup discounts for my shoes.2 -
I do need to modify my comments slightly... because I run outdoors all winter, I do spend a little more on winter running gear. I go exclusively (with one exception) with Mizuno Breath Thermo jackets, pants, socks and gloves... that stuff is magical. It super light weight, but as soon as you start sweating it wicks it away from your skin and heats it up... no lie... I run in that stuff in sub zero temps... as low as -20F with the windchill... and stay toasty. I don't mind spending bucks on that stuff... but hands down, the best winter gear I ever bought was the Sugoi Firewall 180 windproof jacket... a tiny bit pricey, but worth every penny.3

Nod, my winter running Jacket is a North Face Wind Barrier. Thing is incredible... and incredibly expensive. It has to be below freezing before I can wear it though. Else I will die. I am sure of it.2 -
You know you have good winter stuff if you are freezing your *kitten* off for the first couple of miles and then warm up to the sweet spot of just warm enough to keep moving for a while...4

Nominal August mileage goal: 180 miles
Real goals: Avoid injury. Continue to build base and train toward Oak Tree Half and Wineglass Marathon.
Today's notes – Last day for club practice at the current venue; next week it moves to a couple local parks for cross country season. Thursdays are lightly attended, so I set out a little early to do one last nostalgia exploratory run stringing segments I've run before together in a different order. Once again, I came back to base a about a quarter mile shy of 8, so I ran a lap of the track with strides on the straight sides.
Dew point was down in the low 50s, and I was thinking the temperature was low 70s; Garmin says it was 77º F (25º C). Felt very comfortable in my singlet, could have got away with a tee. Yes, there was sweat; but it was manageable instead of the slogfest I've dealt with most of August and all of July.
Thoughts on running as a cheap sport: Yeah, right. When I started, Walmart featured largely in my initial wardrobe. Over time, I've bought costlier stuff when it was clear to me that I was getting some better functionality for the money. The good stuff would be a budget buster if I had to buy it all at once. I don't think I'm likely to buy any plain label or simple brand name tech shirts ever again; I have a closet full of race shirts now, and if I buy something it will be for the logo. Most likely, Adidas will rip me off every year because they have the contract for the BAA/Boston Marathon logo.
Entry fee for Boston went up from $185 for 2018 to $200 for 2019 (for US residents). When I started running, paying a $200 entry fee for any race would have been unthinkable; now, the entry fee is really a minor part of the cost of running Boston. I'm not terribly worried about it. Maybe it bothers locals who don't have to pay for a hotel; but it could be $300 and the race would still sell out.

No socks? I quarantined my summer running shoes to the garage for the past two weeks. August and long runs have left them — oderific. New shoes came via UPS today so I can finally burn the old ones (for the safety of the general public). I can’t imagine the state of them without socks... this summer... 😱.
Maybe it’s just me? lol

Yeah... One of the cool things about minimalist running shoes is that the majority of them are built to be comfy sockless0 -

@RunnerGrl1982: BOOM! Congratulations! I hope it’s not too creepy to say I’ve been rooting for you - we seem to be in a similar place on our running “journey” so it’s great to see you also had a good month. I’d originally planned on setting my August goal to 60 miles but had so much fun with the 50 mile club last month I wanted to give it a second go around. I also like setting my goals nice and low - I’ve scheduled myself to run almost 100 miles next month (five long runs!) but I think I’m going to put my official goal at 75. We will see.
Thank you so much! That means the world to me to hear you say that! I've been keeping tabs on you as well - so totally not creepy at all.
Glad you've been doing well and had a good run! I wish you well on your next month's goal! 100 is awesome! I'll be cheering you on. I understand about wanting to keep goals a bit low as to not get down on ourselves if we don't end up surpassing them. Makes sense to schedule 75 and see where the sneakers reside at the end of it all.
Good luck on your race! We both have races the same weekend offset by 1 day. Should be fun!!
