Bad advice?

Oh man, I have heard so many over the years! Friends, family, coworkers...
Here's a few I can remember off the top of my head:
- The best way to lose is to follow super strict fad diet. Bonus points if it's Paleo or low carb.
- Aspartame is the reason so many people are fat. IT WILL ALSO KILL YOU.
- Grains is why we're fat. Man was never meant to consume grains.
- Legumes release toxins that your body cant process.
- Preservatives and processed foods is why we're fat! America was never fat until THOSE hit the shelves! Eat whole and clean no matter the quantity and you won't be fat!
- Intermittent fasting is a surefire way to throw your body into starvation mode.
- Eating ONLY 1300 calories as a woman will throw you into starvation mode.
- Before starting any diet program, you can obtain best results by first doing an ACV Detox cleanse for a week.
- Counting calories is too restrictive and doesn't work.
- Pickles and Celery are negative calorie foods. You burn more just eating them then other foods.
No one seems to realize that consuming more calories then you burn is what makes one overweight...
Bonus wishful thinking ones:
- Calories consumed at the lake don't count. (If only)
- Calories eaten on Christmas don't count.

Honestly, I don't hear the people I see regularly talking about their weight/eating plans at all. It just isn't a topic that comes up or that they seem interested in. Most seem to be in the healthy weight range, but then I'm probably a bad judge. Only close family who actually see me cooking know I count calories, and my kids do ask me "is this true" questions occasionally. They are the only ones, though. One called me a skeptic once when I questioned probiotic advice she got. (What % of bacteria survive stomach acids?) I'm a scientist and tend to talk in terms of evidence, so they know I won't serve them BS. Sympathy to all the posters whose coworkers are cray cray.9

If you drink x amount of water , 'water cells' will replace fat cells.....2

One of my coworkers was on a very strict diet- basically just salad and a ridiculously small amount of boiled fish- but only when she ate at home. Apparently, when you are not at home you can eat whatever you want because "it doesn't count"...7

if you shake your salad in a closed tupperware (as in to try and coat every last delicious bit with salad dressing), the veggies will lose all of their nutrients and cause you to gain weight.

I thought that it shakes the calories out of it! That's why I ask for my martinis shaken, not stirred.8 -

No no no no. For salads, it shakes the nutrients right out of them! The calories stay and are multiplied 100fold!
(yes. We all looked at her as if she'd grown a second head. She was serious!)1 -

No, no, it BONDs the calories even more tightly to the drink so you absorb them all...9 -

I had a former coworker that believed that if you wear compression garments you can eat whatever you want because the compressor garment is preventing your body from absobing fat.8

My brother in law swears up and down that golfing is cardio. I tried to explain what cardio is to him, but he refuses to believe it. He also thinks you cant have more than a few carbs a day.2

@OldAssDude
If you walk the golf course at a fast rate without stopping it might be cardio.
If you hit your ball out into the middle of the lake and swim to retrieve the ball it might be cardio.
If you take enough swings in the sand trap it might be cardio.
Most golfers get angry when they don't make par, their heart rate goes up, and that could be cardio.

Fat somehow turns into muscle when you lose weight. I never experienced such magic.6

I once listened to a convo where one of thepeople said "you will only loose weight if you dont eat anything white, you NEED to cut out all bread, white rice, pasta and even things like cauliflower as they have all been bleached and this will make you hold on to fat"
I also sat listening to to 2 ladies talking about slimming world and the one said "on the day of your first meeting eat LOADS, all high carb, high sugar, high fat so when you are weighed you will actually weigh alot more than you actually are because they fat and sugars stays in you body for 3 days, so by the time you have your next weigh in ....it will all be out of your system and will have a big loss for your first week.
There have many convos Iv heard (on the bus, at the gym, between friends and family, in the school play groud etc) and Im just like "ok then mate" but have not said a word because my common sense and knowledge of CICO would be laughed out the place.
I mean come on, I eat white food whos gonna listen to me lol10 -

The all been bleached bit is hilarious. It is scary that some actually believe this kind of garbage though.
As far as cheating scales go, someone should tell her that she really should just eat a high sodium meal the day before weigh-in, while increasing exercise in the lead up so there is some muscle repair needed. Then you add water without any extra fat. Nah, let her suffer the consequences.....3
