Rest day today but we took the pup to the dog beach and I ran with him there. At one point he took off down the beach and I ran to catch him (impossible!) He doesn't normally do that and it frightened me a bit. He got lots of treats when he finally responded to my calls! I am pretty sure he thinks he owns the beach!10

The weather was awesome and nothing hurt and I got to break in new shoes, but today's run was mentally tough for some reason. I had to remind myself pretty hard that running is something that I get to do.
Oh and I've been running in this same park for years, but for some reason just discovered a part of it that I've never run in before.
Upcoming races:
20181014 Beijing Women's Half Marathon
20181027 Mogan Ultra 30k
20181118 Shanghai Marathon
@RunRachelleRun Really sorry to hear that. I have no advice, but will be sending good vibes your way.
@kgirlhart All the bands on all my garmins broke eventually. I guess it has something to do with us sweating on them all day. I did a quick search for FR35 bands and they do exist... maybe ebay could help you.
@juliet3455 Congrats on finishing a tough race!8 -

9/30 Wineglass Marathon
We’re now under two weeks away from Wineglass, and my anxiety is creeping up. I decided I am not going to worry about my mileage goal for the month and just focus on not injuring myself and completing the marathon.
I have been reading Matt Fitzgerald’s book on marathon nutrition, and he suggests “fat loading” starting 2 weeks out before the 3 day “carb load.” Has anyone else tried it? I’ve come up with 3 days of foods that are a little higher in fat (salmon, add avocado to breakfast, nuts, oil and vinegar for my salad dressing, etc.) that still stay within my calorie range but that increase the fat macro. I’ll just rotate through the 3 days. He suggests it will get the body in the mode to burn fat during the race. I don’t know if it will help or not, but I guess it can’t hurt too much if I am staying within my calories and choosing “healthy” fats.
I ran 10 miles yesterday. It was overcast and windy, so the run was fairly comfortable. No running today since I work late.
@RunRachelleRun I’m sorry to hear about the melanoma. My dad has pretty bad skin cancer and has had quite a few surgeries, with a couple of significant ones. I wouldn’t cancel the trip, but just expect you might not be able to swim and will need to cover up. I don’t think that has to ruin a vacation though. You may just need to find some alternative activities or find a good book and a big umbrella for the beach!6 -

@juliet3455 Great race in those very tough conditions!
@RunRachelleRun I’m sorry to hear about the melanoma. I would think you should be OK as long as you cover well and don't overdue it in the sun.
@eleanorhawkins Congrats on 10k! That is a huge milestone!
@Avidkeo I totally get your 'vent'! Before this morning, I hadn't run since last Tuesday. Feeling fat and bloated (yeah, guys can feel bloated too). Have gained 8 pounds since I last stepped on the scale. Took time off running to allow my posterior shin splint to heal, but this morning still felt as bad as it did last week.
But I think your plan for this week sounds doable, especially if you have been doing that mileage prior to last week. You can get though this and will come out better in the end.
Started official marathon training this morning. Plan called for 3 miles, but that just doesn't even seem worth lacing up for, so I went ahead and did 4. Was SUPER slow, but didn't want to overdue it as my right leg is still hurting a bit, but time off didn't do any good. From past experience, seems like running through it is the only thing that helps me. I know, that is probably the worst advice, but it seems to work for me. I am feeling better after this morning's run that I have felt in months. Go figure.
@mbaker566 and @RunsOnEspresso thank you for mentioning KT Tape! I used it this morning and it made a HUGE difference! I couldn't believe how well it worked. I am a believer now.

@Scott6255 Depending on your fitness level you might be able to skip the early weeks in the marathon plan. Look for a week that seems to be about where you are (but not a cutback week) and try that.
Of course be careful with that hurt leg though!

@pastorvincent that's the trail I biked last summer (Ohiopyle-Cumberland one day, then Ohiopyle-Pittsburgh a couple weeks later). Next time we're in the States I want to do Cumberland-DC.
I do remember a few places closer to Pittsburgh where it would be easy to lose the trail.
I start therapy tomorrow, and am feeling hopeful after my appointment with a Physio today.4 -
@RunRachelleRun As others have said, you'll probably be okay to go. Maybe check with the surgeon if you are still unsure.2

Catching up on a few days of posts. Had to drop a note to @rheddmobile for the West Cancer FightOn 5k.
Her comments brought a smile to my face - especially the baby calling out in Runner's Lingo and the announcer calling out the Walkers and Dog Owners at the start. Then you passing the words of encouragement forward to another couple.
One of the biggest differences in your side by side photo's - Confidence.eleanorhawkins wrote: »I just ran 10 kilometres. I just ran 10 kilometres. Oh my God I just ran 10 kilometres!!! Longest run ever, plus one km walk to warm up and another one to cool down.
The new shoes that gave you some small blisters - try taking them for a "wet run" I had some shoes that after I got them wet on a run they seemed to relax - for lack of a better description - and now they feel fantastic.
I have a friend who is a toe scruncher when she runs - like she's trying to grab the ground with her toes so she always gets blisters on the ends of her toes in Ultras.
@Avidkeo Vent - that's what helps us move forward, and rolling.
@Teerai Well done on " Dues nearly paid up on my 50 Mile Club membership this month so gonna stretch for 100(cough). Probably won’t make it but it’s a far cry from my 10 mile goal in January! " and that's how the addiction starts. Add in a few Races or as I call them "Events" because as use them as an extension of my training and social interactions.
@pafagel Thanks from all your new Runner Friends for these kind words, Quite often us " oldtimers" in the group might drop a "sarcastic" comment towards a fellow oldie buts those are always meant in good humor.I gotta say, I'm blown away by the community I see here. People on the internet can be so mean spirited sometimes, but everyone here seem so nice and supportive. I read every post in this tread but I cant find the time to be more active and respond.
Like everyone else @RunRachelleRun Go on your Vacation and enjoy it.

a tale of two runs
i needed to do a run to make up for the one i was supposed to do on the 13th but i've been so sleepy i just go home after work and sleep.
so i went out early and did a 4mi run with dogs. it was hard and humid-i need gills, but we did really well.
then we went to barktober fest and a huge street festival with the rescue i work with to socialize speed demon. she did well at the barktober fest, hid under the table for the street festival. but she was a good girl and was a snuggly girl when we get homespeed demon loved this run. look at that smile
someone got a fancy shirt at barktober fest. she gets cold and then whines about going outside
puppies i got to play with at the street festival for the rescue
sunday, ugh. i had a hard time. a very hard time. almost called a friend or family to come and get me. i did have to quit a half mile before the goal and i needed to walk a mile home. i tried all tricks. positive self talk. taking a negative thought and turning it around-wow, my legs hurt-think how strong i'll be, meditation, prayer, straight up thinking oooooohhhhhhmmmm.
drank 1L of water and 2 chews 8 miles in. stopped and picked up 16oz of body armor at a gas station. drank that in about 2 miles. took a wrong turn and was taken a mile and a half out of the way. around 10 miles i stopped sweating like a normally do. had a horrible dry mouth so i stopped by a gas station and picked up 2 powerades 32oz
i walked the next mile till i started to sweat normally and i could make spit. i finished one bottle by mile 13. after mile 11 i had to resort to running 1 block, walking 1. at 13.58, i had to admit my legs had no more running in them. i walked the rest of the way home. about 1.5miles and drank another 16 oz. it wasn't that hot. high 70s, humid, direct sun.the horror, i felt a little traumatizedi might have to get some nuun tablets because my body was not that happy with all the sugar. i might need to find a chew or other option that has good calories but not a lot of sugar.
i think it is time for me to get a vest. a 20oz bottle of water or mix is good enough for a 6 mile run but as much as I sweat and often run with dogs who need water too, i think i should carry more. i was fitted for one at the running store but it was 150. it had midsized bladder(i forget how much) and 2 pockets that could carry water bottles, plus a couple of stash pockets. that is a lot $$$ for me though. my problem is i have a wide shoulders, a good sized chest span, and well endowed.new foster dog. fat girl. can't get up on the bed, we'll be walking her. i will likely only have her for 2 weeks. someone is already interested in her. hopefully i can get some of the extra pounds off of her
old girl is tolerating the snuggles. mind you there is another bed right next to the green one.
her tail though!

@mbaker566 Vests aren't cheap. I would check Amazon. I got my Nathan there for around $70 (I think). I've had it for years. I bought a new bladder for about $30 this year because my bite piece is going but the vest is still in good condition.4

Came to this late, but my goal for September is 70 miles - 10km race on 7th October.8

Many of us use the Wunjo vest. They are EXCELLENT vests. Check them out:

I have the most expensive one, the X5 Ultra - and it was $70+ shipping.3 -
@MobyCarp I'll have to check with the running store. Unfortunately they are 60 miles away. But I can call them and ask what they think about it. @noblsheep I have seen replacement bands online, but the one that I ordered didn't fit. I may just have to keep trying until I get the right one. So far the super glue is holding.
@hesn92 I did C25K in October of 2016. I remember Week 5 Day 3 like it was yesterday. I was both excited and nervous about it. @rheddmobile is right. It really is a turning point, at least it was for me.5 -

I would have just bearly stayed ahead of him depending on how good of a run I was having! I seriously do not think I could have kept up with him on my bicycle!

I would just keep trying. Super Glue, IME, does not hold up well to water so I suspect it will not last you.1 -

Yeah. I'm worried about it getting wet. It really does suck living an hour away from just about anything.4 -
my vivoactive is getting delivered today. trying to focus on work, trying not to wiggle in excitement. and trying not to hunt down a vest when i should be focusing on hunting down missing mortgage documents11

My running goal for the month was to complete my first 10k. Last weekend I did a slow and steady 10k, no walking, in 1:27. This weekend I did a race using 10:1s (hot/humid; morning after a 5k race) in 1:22! So now I'd like to hit 75kms by month's end. I'll be starting some HR focused base training for fall so I'm aiming to run slower/easier, but more often and/or further.14

If I needed a vest I'd definitely look at this one. I've been pretty happy with my nathan though and can't justify a replacement since it's almost perfect condition.0 -

You made me look. Amazon description says, "Replacement band for Garmin Forerunner 35, Silicone Replacement Fitness Bands Bracelet Sport Strap WristBand Accessory with Screwdriver for Garmin Forerunner 35." For that description, the pictures, and $8.59, I'd go with it and not worry a lot if it didn't work. The similar offering for the 630 was exactly as expected. You might be able to find a cheaper price; I didn't work very hard on the search.4 -
@kgirlhart I also found a YouTube video showing how to replace the strap for a Garmin 35. Based on that video, I'd say any claim that it isn't user replaceable is BS.2

Switched my week runs from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3 because today is my flex day so I have more time than a day where I work. My legs were like why? And I told them to hush and after about 2 miles they felt better. I did take a few .10ish walk breaks because of the heat after 2.5 miles. It gets warm quickly once the sun comes out!
Now I think I have two rest days due to later evenings. I hope to start getting more weight sessions in though. Going to try to start today after my hair appt.4 -
@mbaker566 Speed demon does look so happy after his run! Love that you have opportunities to take your dogs out for socialization. Sorry your second run didn't turn out so well. But, at least you were out there running and doing much better than I can or ever have.0
