That's just the thing... MFP doesn't approve of "negativity", so while they made the concession of the "woo" button, it was with the ambiguous definition so no one could point to it as being a solely negative response. Makes a ton of sense, doesn't it? Especially since, as has been pointed out, "woo" is much more emotionally charged as a negative word than "dislike".
Edited to add: What's worse? A simple "dislike" or having a bunch of people spouting gibberish that they may very well think is being cheered, and another bunch of people with reasonable, well thought-out comments thinking they are being called quacks?7 -
They need to add an "GAWD your a flipping idiot!" button so no one is confused.
Again, I vote to get rid of the ratings, the likes and everything else except for the quote and flag buttons, they are the only buttons needed.5 -

I once read they decided to allow the reactions in order to prevent people from "piling on" with the same basic responses, which actually makes sense, but when the reaction is ambiguous, an explanation is still in order.1 -
I got my first Woo when I posted my starting weight on a weight loss challenge thread. I was very new to MFP, but I knew what Woo meant, and it upset me very badly. I cried. I was sure that someone was telling me I didn't deserve to live or that I was too disgusting to participate in their challenge. I got my second Woo on the next weight loss challenge thread, and this time I noticed that everyone over 200 lbs got the same gift. Gee, thanks! It really bothered me the second time too. I've come to the conclusion that the person(s) who gave me those votes have interpreted Woo to mean WooHoo or You can do it!, rather than the BS or FOAD I interpreted it to be.
That first one nearly chased me off the forum and stopped me from using the website. I was really that upset. Does MFP need to rethink the silly Woo button? or make its definition/purpose clearer? In my opinion, yes, they do.
Edited to add: support for my position was strengthened by the two anonymous Woo votes to this post. I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean. That the clickers are mean-spirited? That they think they are really humourous? that they have judged me/my post insincere? Meh. whatever.14 -

Learned this the hard way, haha. I had had a thread about the woo button. At first I thought someone had it in for me because every one of my discussion points was getting woo'd, even the one that just said I don't know how to link on mobile! Then I noticed that someone was going through the whole post and giving everyone a woo. Even @kimny72 who, as far as I can tell, should never get a negative woo.6 -

It was changed from "WTF" to "woo", after looking at the code I think it is suppose to be negative reaction to the comment.
To all the people I wooed in the success stories, the NSV threads etc. I am sorry. I meant "woo-hoo", not anything negative.
But in all seriousness, those things at the bottom of the message shouldn't bother you one way or the other.
I would pay money to have the wtf button. <nods>
You may already know this, but for other readers, the URL for a user's woo notifications actually ends in "...?reaction=wtf"
So it really is wtf.
