No run today... too many meetings. Next week will be very touch and go, probably lose track of this thread too. So *hugs* in advance for people that need them, "WOOHOO"s to those that want them, and, remember to not compare yourself to anyone else! We all are on our own journey and are at wildly different places.
Also... YOU GOT THIS!6 -
@AlphaHowls Ouch ouch ouch! That sounds so painful. I can't believe you kept on running so long, but of course you did! I actually fell at the starting line of a half and bruised/scraped both knees and bruised my ribs but ran the whole thing for a PR at the time, so I know the adrenaline gets you. But your poor face and other parts must be so sore. Gentle hugs.
@sarahthes great job on your trail race.
@jele30 good job on your run and yay for signing up for the half in 3 weeks! Good luck!6 -
@katharmonic There is something to be learned from those too-fast long runs. A few weeks before Boston, I tried to run 12 miles with the 7:30 pace group. What I learned from that was, 7:30 was too fast for me to target as marathon pace for Boston. I did much better with it by the time Wineglass rolled around, but I wasn't in shape to hold a 7:30 pace over distance going into Boston. Knowing that 7:30 was too fast even in good weather helped me control my pace for the first 16 miles of Boston.
@Elise4270 My go-to road shoes are Saucony Kinvaras. I have run 5 marathons in them, including Boston 3 times. They are moderately light (not ultra-light) balanced shoes and are quite popular among male marathon runners. That having been said, the correct shoe is a very individual choice. Just because Kinvaras work well for me and several other marathon runners I know doesn't mean they will necessarily work well for your husband. He needs to try different things until he finds something that works well for him.6 -
My final long run of buildup is done. A gentle 20km around the neighbourhood this morning. I was supposed to run yesterday with a group (it's easier with others to distract you from the grind) but as it was my brother-in-law's 50th birthday party the night before, I knew I would be in no shape to get up and out the door by 7:30am. As it was I slept till 10am (haven't done that in at least 15 years). Gentle day yesterday - gardening and not much more. Woke up a box of birds this morning (children conveniently at their grandparents until lunch today) and heading out for a couple of long loops of the neighbourhood. Timed it to swing past my letterbox at 11km where I had stashed a gel and water. The run felt great for the most of it. At about 16km I started to get a bit bored and thought sod it, I might as well speed up and get this over with. As it turns out, my last four kilometre splits were each 10-15 seconds faster than the previous one. This bodes well for October 28th!

Thanks Kevin. He bought a pair of Reebok float ride run fast's. They sound like a decent race/speed work shoe. He'll still needs a good training shoe. He said may reconsider buying pair of the Saucony's, he thought they seemed a little inexpensive, maybe cheep and not a good marathon shoe.1 -
MobyCarp and Pastor Vincent:
You especially (and all the other posters) are inspirational.
When I retired from the military in 1994, I swore I'd never run again.
I weighed 234 lbs last October, and realized if I didn't do something positive, I was headed for an early grave.
Started with walking; then walking and jogging; then was able to jog the entire course. The point then was to try to get more competitive.
Fast forward to 09/30/18. At 66 years old, entered my first 5k at a weight of 180. My goal was to not embarras myself.
Finished with a time of 32:07 and won my age group.
Now planning to enter another 5k on 10/21/18, hoping to do a little better time wise (and still not embarras myself).
At least now, thanks to the runners on this thread, I have a feel for what times I can eventually aspire to reach.
My thanks to you all!!
@Tramboman You may never run as fast as another runner that you compare yourself to. However, you should become able to run faster than you do today. Common wisdom is that a new runner gets faster for the first 5 or 10 years of running, regardless of what age he starts running.
For reference, today I ran 6K of cross country on grass with typical cross country hills, some wet spots for poor push-off, and a couple of asphalt road crossings to slow me down because I'm wearing spikes. I deliberately slowed down 3 times in recognition of post-marathon aches asking me not to pound so hard. Even with those slow downs, my average pace was faster than my first road 5K, 7 years ago at age 55. That road 5K was a fast, flat course all on asphalt with few turns, designed to produce good times. In between then and now, my range, speed, and endurance have all improved. Oh, yeah . . . I'm about 10 pounds lighter today than I was when I ran that first 5K. That will have an impact, but the training and miles running are bigger factors.5 -
Oh @AlphaHowls, it hurt just reading your post! You have to be the toughest, strongest person I know. You are amazing!3
-
@rheddmobile Congrats to you and hubby!
@AlphaHowls Owwie! Worst I have done was slid on a pine tree root and still did 4 more miles in boots and utes. 2 more hours /bow.
@zdyb23456 Awesome HM time!
Nice race @MobyCarp !
Rest day with travel back to home for me today. Gonna try to find a suitable hill tomorrow for some hill repeats.4 -
Will I ever log my runs the day they happen anymore? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Oh well. Run yesterday was good, aside from some mild stomach cramps. Will try to get my run in tomorrow even though we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving and I won't have the energy/willpower to run after dinner like I like to. Also, 1/5 of the way to my goal. Yay!
Edit: Ticker isn't letting me update the distance so I've run 10km/50km.7 -
Did it. 16 miles.
13 running, saw deer, white squirrel, and ran thru ankle deep puddles. Then, saw a cat attacking a rabbit. So saved the rabbit, ran and power walked to my car. Hopefully, the wildlife center can help him pull thru. He was rather snuggly. Sorta wanted to keep him.
Beat my half record by a few min.
I felt achy but sore. It was a much better run than that awful 14 a few weeks ago.

Still super busy - today with family stuff. Got 4.84 miles in this morning, but ran out of time.
Tonight, I got 6 miles in on the treadmill while watching The Walking Dead.
11 -
Thanks @jele30
@AlphaHowls Ouch! Hope you feel better soon. I can't believe you ran for 2 more hours. Oh wait. I can totally believe you ran for 2 more hours.
@mbaker566 I hope the rabbit makes it.6 -
@mbaker566 Epic run!!
@AlphaHowls Respect.
I ran 5 km this morning. Wasn't sure how far I'd go, and when I started feeling the slightest bit of effort, I called it a day.
Good thing I did, I was tired this afternoon. Been getting up too early and busy, busy, busy!
Must rest, rest, rest, this week before Sunday's marathon!!!
1. With Summer approaching, my strategy is always to run early in the morning before the heat hits.
2. 2 years ago for Halloween, I dressed to give the "you're getting too thin" people something to talk about.
19 -
10/1-7 totals: bike 20.4k, run 15k
10/8 - run 5.1k

There were way too many stinky car fumes in my run today. I'll pick a different route next time.

November 11: City Trail 5k (might skip this one due to work)
December 8: City Trail 5k
January 12: City Trail 5k
February 2-3: Lublin night 10k
February 16: City Trail 5k
March 23: City Trail 5k

Love it!4 -
@juliet3455 Thank you! At the rate I'm going this month, it WILL take me 21 years to get there. I have decided not to post a goal for Oct. This month is crazy, so not sure I'll be able to run much. I need to get a lot of outside work done, like trimming trees and cleaning the gutters, before it turns cold and I'm going to FL for 10 days, for my step-granddaughter's wedding. Even though I'll plan to exercise and run while I'm there, I know from past experience that is highly unlikely to happen. Anyway, I won't be sitting on my behind, but won't be running much either. I do hope to do better in November and run a 5 mile race in Dec. We'll see how it goes. For now, I'm just going to stalk this group and get inspiration for later.6

Week 1:

3 miles
Total: 5 miles
Need to step it up a bit.
Having said that, I'm nervously waiting to hear if I got a place in the London Marathon...9 -
here's a new contender for things that you find that make you a jogger not a runner6

Ah, never mind! Just got my "commiserations" magazine! (And my rejects training top. Lol!)8 -
@ddmom0801 - I thought of you when I read this story in Runner's World 😊

Sorry about that @KKHKISHZKH (very difficult name to type or pronounce )! Nice consolation gifts though, I guess.
@mbaker566 aw, the sweet bunny! So glad you saved it and I hope it makes it. Also love the white squirrel. THat was an eventful run and you still got your best time for a half. Well done.
@orphia good luck on your marathon this coming weekend. Definitely rest up! Love the costume.
@MobyCarp thanks for the encouragement. I'm having a hard time knowing what pace to target for a full marathon. Mostly my goal is to finish and try to enjoy the experience. But of course in my heart I have time goals - I'm just not sure which ones are realistic and how to pace from the beginning. I don't think my training run pace was too fast in terms of race pace, it was too fast for 20 miles when already very tired though.7 -
@AlphaHowls you are hardcore! But then so is everyone else on here. Some fantastic race reports and PRs and achievements. I love reading them.
I've got a 10k race this afternoon. It's the Reebok Women's 10k in Boston. It used to be the Tufts 10k, but Reebok took over the sponsorship this year. Always a fun race and I'm hoping this year it will be a little less humid. Last year it was like running through soup.10 -
60 mile goal

10/2 2.3

Wow - 10 days of vacation and 27 pages to catch up. That'll teach me.
I also ran the Wineglass - but the half not full like @MobyCarp and @marisap2010. Remarkably, this was my 21st half marathon and the FIRST time I had to contend with rain. Sooner or later it was going to happen. Fortunately I grabbed my visor at the last minute so at least the rain was dripping off my visor and not my eyelashes!
I was aiming for a finish time between 3:10 and 3:20 - finished in 3:08. While I was happy with the time, what really made me pleased was how I stuck with my pace right through to the end. I tend to hit mile 9 or 10 and slow down and/or start walking more than running. This time I told myself to power through it and keep up my pace - I listened to how my feet were hitting the pavement and fixed my stride/form. It was a great race - very well organized. Since my hubby provides my transportation, he appreciated that there wasn't a traffic boondoggle for him. An easy drop-off and pick-up.
The following Sunday I ran another half (because what's the point of going on vacation if you can't fill it with running?). However - this was a trail run which I assumed meant - you know - trails. It was almost entirely on grass which at first seemed like a cool idea. I had no idea how hard that was going to be. Very slow going because I was constantly (nearly) twisting my ankles on uneven ground. Maybe actual trail shoes would have helped - I was just wearing my regular running shoes.
Here's the thing though - this was a very small race - only 60 people in the half (had I realized that I probably would not have signed up). By mile 1, I was by myself. But by mile 6 or so, I kept spotting a guy that had obviously started out too fast and was now slowing down. I caught him at mile 11 and decided that rather than pass him, I would stick with him for a bit and see if he needed some encouragement or whatever. Turns out he was running the half because he lost a bet - did not train because "I didn't think running 13 miles would be a big deal". I decided to stick with him for the last 2 miles to provide encouragement thinking I was being nice. The final turn before the last 1/4 mile to the finish he says to me "I can't let you beat me even though I know you could. My buddies are waiting for me." I was flabbergasted. We started to run to the finish - after about 50 feet he says "I don't have anything left - I can't run" - so I kept going because he'd really pissed me off. I ran through the finish, waited for him to give him a high-five - he wouldn't even look at me. I should have shouted "not only did you get beat by a woman - you got beat by a 60 year old woman - jerk" - but I didn't. I just picked up my medal, my cold pizza, and told my husband the story who also fumed about it.20 -
I ran the 5k yesterday as planned. I got a new best time of 40:19, which is super slow compared to most of you. BUT my previous best time was 43:58, so I'll take it!
In other news, sadly, I'm banned from any physical activity besides walking in my house at the moment. I have two blood clotting disorders (I get clots often) and I am currently awaiting my appointment today to have testing for what we fear is another clot in my left leg. We'll see what happens with the rest of the day, I guess. It usually ends up with me being in the hospital for a few days and banned from working out for 30 days.
I've enjoyed reading all your updates!

God, some guys can be such eejits. Good for you and congratulations on a good race. I did a 5k earlier this year. Like your half it was a small race with 59 entrants. I ran it really well for me and finished fourth over all and was the second placed woman. The youngish guy who finished fifth behind me was desperate to catch me at the end but I managed to hold on. I heard him later on his phone kvetching to his friend how he'd been beaten by "two old women" and it wasn't fair. The fact he'd also been beaten by two men obviously didn't matter.9 -
I'm taking a break on running this week. My ankle is possibly injured. I will crosstrain all week and attempt a run on Saturday. My last few runs have been uncomfortable. A year ago I managed to finish my first marathon, perhaps the muscle memory is protesting so I don't attempt another.18
-
Oct 1 - REST (planned)
Oct 2 - REST (ummm, unplanned)
Oct 3 - REST (still unplanned)
Oct 4 - REST (again...)
Oct 5 - REST (sigh)
Oct 6 - Crosstrain (Body Pump)
Oct 7 - 14.2
I was aiming for 16 yesterday, but stopped early because I ran out of time due to other commitments. I mis-judged the effort to hike a hill (twice) in my loops. The run itself wasn't hard. No groin or hip pain except for 2-3 times when I overextended my stride.
Definitely sore today in the hip. I see an ortho later today, which really just means XRays and PT to start, I'm sure.
May or may not cross train tonight (Les Mills CXWORX). I have Les Mills On Demand and am really getting some good use out of it for cross training.11
