However, if you're from a country that doesn't use HFCS, you can really, really tell.
Most people really, really can't no matter where they are from. "Finer, more discerning palettes" are a myth for the most part. Double blind tests of all sorts of products confirm that. For example, many wine "experts" refuse to participate in them. They know they can easily be fooled. Presentation and perception are a huge part of it.
Yeah, I am really hard pressed to believe someone can differentiate red wine from one another through blind tasting; it's too complex of a flavor. Either that, or I'm just a really "cheap date" with an unsophisticated palate
The one that got the most press was "Two Buck Chuck" from Trader Joe's. It's their house brand, Charles Shaw, which I think is now $3 a bottle. It won some awards in at least one competition where the judges didn't realize a cheap store brand had been entered. I no longer drink, but when I did I could tell the difference between very different types of wines or *really* poor quality; some don't use the process and/or the variety of grape the particular wine is supposed to. But there is a pretty low bar above which there may be some minor differences between brands but you can find a low priced one that comes close enough to any of the higher end ones that very few people can reliably tell the difference. Even the few that can from some subtle part of the taste they have memorized will express a preference that really isn't based on good versus bad taste, IMO.
Another unpopular opinion from my drinking days is that all straight liquor is pretty nasty. Even people whose preferred drink is straight liquor sip it slowly and/or have a chaser to get that taste out of their mouths. Take it with a grain of salt (like tequila) as I have to stay away from all of it now which likely flavors my opinion.

Candy corn is trash29

I like cornbread so sweet it could pass for gritty cake.10

I like sweet grits with tons of butter, jelly or sugar.7

I don't get the appeal of bagels. Every few years since forever, someone will try to introduce me to "the BEST bagels", whether that's a chain like Panera or Einstein Bros. or authentic NYC freshly made bagels. I'm always just like mm, not terrible? They aren't for me. Yes those are better than Lender's in the freezer case but not by that much. Just kinda tough and chewy bread? I'll take a slice of toast, thanks.
I have very similar feelings about croissants.13 -

HFCS leaves an aftertaste that becomes very apparent in cola. Can I tell the difference in ketchup? No. In Coca-Cola? Definitely.3 -
I am in total agreement with the Starbucks comments. I will happily drink instant coffee before I drink Starbucks.9

I don't like liver.4

Most cakes (especially commercial ones) are just sickly sweet and totally yuk!13

Foods that can disappear from the planet as far as I am concerned: chocolate ice cream; chocolate mousse, chocolate cake and its variants: molten chocolate cake, chocolate cake with chocolate ganache. Also chocolate and coconut don't go together at all.
It’s so refreshing to meet another non-chocolate person!
Do restaurant dessert menus make you as crazy as they do me?
I actually like chocolate funny enough. I just don't like it adulterated with other stuff. The only restaurants I go to looking forward to the dessert menu are french and italian.1 -

I am so glad I'm not trying to gain or have problems reaching my cal goal because the first thing recommended is usually PB, and I would be seriously gagging.
I bet my woo count is going to go up now
Cheers, h.
In my country we use it to cook savory dishes not sweet stuff. When I first came to America and said I had never had a PBJ the classmate I was talking to called another "did you hear that? Gasp! She's never had a PBJ!" lol
@joinn68 Where are you from?
Savory dishes with peanuts or peanut butter that I've had: kung pao chicken, groundnut stew, dan dan noodles, gado gado
I am from Cameroon. We use peanut butter to make groundnut soup. Easy peasy to make so quite popular. Also a dish called Nnam Wondo which is almost pure peanut butter with some fish and spices, wrapped in leaves and steamed. And something else called Okok which is green vegetable, palm kernels and peanut butter. Pure calorie bombs!10 -
Yes, real Italian food is fresh and healthy with real produce, not butter and cheese and nothing else.5 -

I'm with you. Completely unappealing to me. So is most bread actually.3 -

This is how I feel about frosting. Most frosting. I found a recipe that was food allergy friend for my daughter when she was little for maple meringue that's tolerable.
As for cake? Eh. I have celiac disease and haven't bothered to bake myself a gluten free cake in years, but back when I could eat gluten, I always made home made cakes. Everyone considered me a really good baker and would always ask me my secret. My secret? I cut the sugar in every recipe I cooked and increased ingredients like vanilla and cinnamon. So I was never used to cakes being overly sweet since I deliberately cooked them not to be that way.12 -

Groundnut soup is AMAZING. So delicious.2 -
Goat cheese tastes like goats smell.
Starbucks brewed coffee is trash.8 -
Coconut water tastes like liquid dust.
I have an aversion to ice cream. It grosses me out even watching people eat it. Like .. I don't want to see you licking saliva all over your food. It's disgusting.4 -

I make my potato salad european style with oil and vinegar dressing. It is much better that way!4 -

Agree on coconut water. I tried 3 brands thinking I had made the wrong choice each time. Nope, just hate it all. Sickening. I also hate every kombucha I've tried, even though people keep telling me I should love it since I like fermented & vinegary foods.
I do like ice cream but I'm grossed out watching some people eat it if they lick their cone forever or only eat like 1/4 of each bite and keep putting the same spoonful back into their mouth all slimy & melting. So I hear ya on that. If I'm eating ice cream I scoop up pretty small bites and eat the whole spoonful each time.
Mentioned in other posts...but I don't get the dessert menus with every single item being chocolate on top of chocolate. I do like chocolate. But I just prefer more variety and I find a lot of the stuff that layers chocolates together is low quality and tastes awful.3 -
Coconut water is gross.3

Me too! German potato salad, with bacon. Mmmmm.6 -

Reese's peanut butter cups are an overrated candy. Is that even PB in there???
Here ya go (skip the coconut oil, use peanut butter than separates, and use that oil instead.)

Cauliflower takes on the taste of whatever you season it with. I eat mashed cauliflower with actual salted butter, garlic and bacon pieces. And sometimes cheddar cheese. It's a delivery system.
The Cheesecake Factory makes this Korean cauliflower and it’s fricking delicious... it tastes like sweet and sour chicken!
OOO gotta try that. Found the recipe: https://www.thecheesecakefactory.com/about-us/our-recipes/korean-fried-cauliflower/
Buffalo Cauliflower does not taste "just like" buffalo wings, but is very yummy, and my OH, a cauliflower hater, likes it: https://www.franksredhot.com/recipes/Buffalo-Cauliflower-Bites5 -

I'd make that, just omit the flour and water. Cauliflower doesn't need breading!

One time I made a Cherry pie and left out ALL of the sugar. Everybody loved it and asked for the recipe. It was much fruiter and fresher in taste. Sugar can really be cut at least in half in most baking recipes.

I detest sweet coffee in any form. Coffee is meant to be bitter, like steak is meant to be umami.lynn_glenmont wrote: »Breaded seafood is disgusting.
If we were Facebook friends I would have to block you.
A good thing my unpopular opinions about things other than food include (1) I'm not interested in Facebook and (2) I'm really not all that interested in having online friends, although I do occasionally accept requests on MFP.8
