I just started a new running challenge! Today was a short walk at a moderate pace. Starting my treadmill tomorrow and I’m stoked! I miss running like I used to haha. Anyone have suggestions on what incline I should use that’s good for a beginner but also not too easy? I’m thinking 2% but I could be wrong. Also please feel free to add me I just started on here today and could use an extra friend or two! 😁
So with the dreadmill here I highly suggest you et a fan that moves back and for. Set it up around your head level and point it at or across your face. This will help you breathe and make sure you are not standing in a cloud of bad air (not a problem when you run outside).
For now, since it sounds like you are starting at 0 leave the incline at 0% or 1% for now. Build slowly. Spend a few weeks experimenting with speeds, inclines, distances, and the like till you have an objective idea of where you really are. Then build from there.
IMO, YMMV, and all that.4 -
I am really frustrated right now. It is SIXTY-TWO DEGREES AND SUNNY but due to meetings and etc I will not get to run outside today. I might be able if I am "lucky" get an hour on the dreadmill.
WHEN IT IS 62F OUT THERE. Bah. Would have been a great day for a 2-3 hour run.10 -
Well I made it through the first three pages, but catching up the rest of the way is going to have to wait! I’ve got no mileage goal for December right now. I just want to keep running regularly. I’m going to say at least twice a week, to make it measurable and (hopefully) achievable.
No running for three days and probably not today either - this is our last weekend with the old house and my husband hurt himself halfway through the Great Clean yesterday, so I’m finishing up myself. The postal service misdelivered my cyber Monday REI pants, so that stinks too. Also I ripped a toenail way too low and that’s still healing. Also also, I’ve overindulged this weekend and blew my calorie goal all to hell.
But in spite of all of that, I feel good. I can feel myself recharging after the stress of the last few weeks, and the new house is becoming more like home every day.
Question of the month! My mom was probably my main inspiration to get in shape, although unfortunately as a cautionary tale. I’ve been watching her deteriorate over the last few years and knew that I didn’t want to be there in 30 years if there was anything I could do to avoid it.
These days I’m kind of on a self-inspiration track. Late Summer/Early Fall Me kicked a lot of *kitten* and knowing that I could run all those miles then really does help me keep on lacing up the shoes and heading out there.5 -
Congratulations @Orphia on your new PB for the half! Awesome!
Happy birthday @zeesparrow

The weather here today was great - got up to about 50 degrees and the rain in the forecast didn't materialize. It was even kind of sunny for a while. I took the dog for a nice walk in the morning. Got some raking done that never got done before it snowed in mid-November. Still not done with that and need to haul leaves somewhere but at least the majority of the back yard is not smothered by leaves. Finally I got a run in and enjoyed being able to wear capri pants and just a light weight long sleeve.
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Good question. I want to be able to report that:- I ran my fastest half marathon
- I finished the sprint Spartan race and didn't embarrass myself (too much)
- I ran a race every month of the year
- I kicked some *kitten* and took some names

12/1 4.37 Saguaro 7k
12/2 8 Hot Chocolate 15k
Total 12.37 out of 100
I had a race scheduled this morning but I didn't go. I didn't sleep well but got up and started getting ready. I was about halfway through my oatmeal I started crying. I couldn't stop and was still crying when I should have been leaving. So needless to say I did not make it to the race. (For those not in the facebook group, I lost my dad about a month and a half ago very suddenly and unexpected. I didn't share here because it was extremely painful for me. It's still very hard)
I decided to go for my run this afternoon. My new training plan had 8-10 miles with 3x100m strides. I took it pretty easy for most of it. I ran two miles, walked .25, repeat until the strides at the end. I wasn't up for much more but I wanted to at least get the minimum of my scheduled miles.18 -

So sorry it hit you hard today! Grief is a strange thing - hits you when you least expect it.
Prayers coming your way!!1 -
Friday felt like gravity was extra strong...I was feeling very sluggish and heavy. Friday night and Saturday was sick with head and stomach issues. Felt better when I woke up Sunday after sleeping about 11 hours. After church did my 17 mile long run. I went ahead and walked during my water / fuel breaks. I think it helped, and didn't add too much to the overall time. Will continue to use that stradegy on the long, long runs.
ETA: This was my longest run to date. Each weekend, other than cut-down weeks, I'll be setting new distance PRs. That makes me smile
Congrats @Orphia on your Half Marathon PR!
Way to go @rheddmobile on your AG Place!
Happy birthday @zeesparrow.
Who inspires me to run?
Honestly, everyone on this MFP thread. You all are my running family, and I get all my support and inspiration from all of you. The only IRL running person I have is my brother, and he live 1000 miles away. I learn so much here, and get motivated every day by all the success (and even the challenges) everyone goes through. Thank you for being here.13 -
12/1 = 0
12/2 = 0
So, I feel a little less like death this morning but still not up to running. My ribs hurt from coughing so much. Ugh.
Who inspires me to run? Besides you guys? The women runners in my running group inspire me. Half of them are doing the "run a marathon in every state" thing. Crazy! They were super supportive during my first marathon training.
Group question: Is anyone doing the Run the Year challenge? I am thinking about it for 2019.
December goal miles = 150
Upcoming Races:
12/15 = Stars at Night Half
1/26/19 = Miami Tropical 5K
1/27/19 = Miami Marathon
3/10/19 = ZOOMA half
5/4/19 = Wisconsin Marathon (mittens challenge part 1)
5/5/19 = Kalamazoo Marathon (mittens challenge part 2)9 -

@PastorVincent You have my sympathy. #stupidadulting
I am whining about the same thing today. It was perfect running weather today and I can't run. #stupidbronchitis
I have been having a PLOM party all day. (PLOM = Poor Little Old Me)

Carman’s Women’s Half Marathon 2018.
In my 4th Half Marathon event in 5 weeks today, I did my official HM PB!! 2:08:08.
After the previous Sunday’s beast of a HM (700m elevation), my legs were wrecked for 3 days, so I did an experiment and didn’t run for the whole week to give them proper rest. Success!!!
Love doing this event that's all women, in aid of breast cancer. Did the HM in 2016 which stood as my PB, until today.
@Orphia Congrats on the HM PB!1 -
I'm 8 pages late to the party again ^^ I'll catch up tomorrow, I just wanted to drop by and leave my goal before we hit double-digit page numbers. I'll try for 150km again. The last four months all fell short at around 130km, but I'm not giving up yet!6

December Running Totals (miles)
12/1 – 18.15 partly paced run
12/2 – 8.24 easy
December running total to date – 26.39
Nominal December mileage goal: 160 miles
Real Goals: Recover from the strained hamstring. Work back to running faster only as the hamstring allows. Run Freezeroo #1 as allowed by my physical condition on race day, with a blind eye toward age group standings. Have a solid base of 40 miles per week by the end of December to start Boston training.
Today's notes – Got out to run around 3:30 PM today. 55º F (13º C) with sunshine on December 2 is a gift that should not be wasted. Set out to run 5 to 7 miles. Started on a route that's 10K, and realized enough snow had melted that a nice gravel road should be clear. That added some distance, to where I would have a bit over 7 miles. Then my bladder spoke up; but a construction site port-a-pot showed up at 5.7 miles! Well, that was less than 2 miles from home; so I just had to add some to make the run after the break over 2 miles. Ended up running a bit over an hour, and it felt good.
Best news: When I did my stretches, it wasn't obvious that the hamstrings are asymmetrical. Could feel it just a little, but not for the entire hamstring stretch.
Rest day tomorrow, and Tuesday I get to experiment with pickups/fartlek after warming up well. I'm optimistic about that right now.

Monthly question number 2
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
That sounds suspiciously like, what are your 2019 goals? I haven't finalized those yet, but the top one will be to avoid injury. I haven't done well with that goal recently, though I've done good damage control in 2018.
So, by December 2019, in a perfect world . . .
- I will have run 2 marathons in 2019, Boston and hopefully New York
- I will have figured out how to stay healthy all year long
- Assuming I stay healthy, I will have run the year in miles
Which brings me to:
Group question: Is anyone doing the Run the Year challenge? (courtesy of @amymoreorless )
I am not doing this as a challenge. I should have been able to run the year in miles in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Each time, I did not because injury compelled me to spend time not running. While I would like to run 2019 miles in 2019, the important thing isn't actually running that many miles. The important thing is staying healthy enough to run that many miles. Or, failing that, admitting I'm injured early enough to minimize non-running time.7 -
Group question: Is anyone doing the Run the Year challenge? (courtesy of @amymoreorless ).
I am doing Run the Year on a team with my RB. We are splitting 1008 evenly.
I finished HUG A RUNNER with 38 miles over a 10 day period.
I am currently not on FB, but if the group is useful/helpful I will get back on.2 -
1---2.01
2---2.0 TM
4/45 miles
Upcoming races
January 5 BIRR Ultra relay. 50k. Hawaii. For @KeepRunningFatboy
March 31, 2019 A2A Undecided distance. Ardmore OK
April 28, 2019 OKC Memorial Marathon (half)
@MobyCarp It was kind of a 2019 goals question. But I wanted to know what everyone wants from 2019 and running. It's exciting knowing a year from now that we will be stronger physically and mentally. I also wanted to encourage folks to hang around for the year.
I won't be doing the Run the Year. I tried once and failed miserably. So. Maybe 2020.3 -

Funny how we can see the same thing and think so differently.
I thought this was asking what our 2018 accomplishments were.

So I *might* have snuck out a back door and might have disappeared for an hour or so... #horribleadulting Not quite the 3 hours I should have run, but 1 hour 7 mins... errr... I mean that is what I could have done if I did sneak out the back door in a pair of shorts and a tshirt...10 -
Air quality has been funky lately, and it doesn't look like it's getting any better for December. Plus *kitten* has hit the fan at work - people have been quitting left and right, and we are a small department so that's a lot of slack to pull. But meh, excuses. Going for 60km this month, with hopefully more lifting.
1201-6.2k total-6.2k, goal-60k
An hour on the dreadmill. Nuff said.
Monthly question 1: inspirations
Y'all. What everybody else said.
Monthly question 2: 2019 goals
Run more consistently. Averaging out at 25km a week would be nice. Oh and I'd really like to do a 50k trail race.3 -
Monthly question number 2
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
I hesitate to set a "goal" perse. I would like to make a year without surgery or waiting surgery to fix my broke a-self. I'm up to two miles without pain or niggles. This could be the year!
And dont forget
Group question #3: Is anyone doing the Run the Year challenge? (courtesy of @amymoreorless )
If anyone wants to do it, but cant do it alone, i know there is a team option. I'm willing to join. I ran 340 miles so far this year, so I'd need a lot of help or a lotta team.1
