Carman’s Women’s Half Marathon 2018.
In my 4th Half Marathon event in 5 weeks today, I did my official HM PB!! 2:08:08.
After the previous Sunday’s beast of a HM (700m elevation), my legs were wrecked for 3 days, so I did an experiment and didn’t run for the whole week to give them proper rest. Success!!!
Love doing this event that's all women, in aid of breast cancer. Did the HM in 2016 which stood as my PB, until today.

I just started a new running challenge! Today was a short walk at a moderate pace. Starting my treadmill tomorrow and I’m stoked! I miss running like I used to haha. Anyone have suggestions on what incline I should use that’s good for a beginner but also not too easy? I’m thinking 2% but I could be wrong. Also please feel free to add me I just started on here today and could use an extra friend or two! 😁5

Finally my last long run before race day is done. 16km, meaning it was my first double digit in miles run ever. Wasn't all that bad, took me a couple of miles to really get into it and it did seem to last FOREVER (few seconds under 2 hours to be exact) but it went ok. Think the bit that hurt the most was getting up at 7am on a Sunday, I'm really looking forward to not having to do that for a few weeks (Promised myself I will run later on Sundays in for the rest of the month, it's my little reward to myself).
Usually I run on coffee and a banana, or coffee and a small cereal bar if there are no bananas, been feeling a little lightheaded after around 8km recently despite the odd jelly baby so thought maybe a little more fuel before would help. Think it did, no lightheadedness and no stomach issues either. They're going in the bag for race day then!
It's my husband's birthday today and we're going to our favourite Italian restaurant for lunch to celebrate. Thoughts of pizza may well have been what kept me going over the last 4 km :-)

No run yesterday as I was traveling and officially on vacation! I did walk about 8 miles between the airport trek and all the walking at Epcot. Definitely burned off some of the snacks, which were delicious btw.

@katharmonic, @PastorVincent , @Avidkeo thanks for the input. I think we're going to go with the vivosmart. @Avidkeo , I also have the viviactive 3, and I really like it. It's my first smart/fitness watch. I think it does a great job for the price. I would get her that one, but I know she doesn't like how big the watch face is. The vivosmart is waterproof, and it tracks steps and cycling. I think she'll be happy with it, especially since it's her first fitness tracker.4

Sent you a FR. I think TM run with whatever incline suites you. I like a negative incline or none at all. Others here might run 4%+ (@pastorvincent is a hill beast). So you do you and dont give up!

I have one more question....
With the cold dry air my face is so dry. I need to use lotion. Which seems to cause a small amount of pimples. I've used Vaseline but it too seem to cause some blemishes. Any go to products, a face friendly favorite?0 -
Sitting in my car waiting for it to warm up in the gym parking lot, so I figured I’d take the time to answer the monthly questions.
1). Who inspires you as a runner?
Honestly, this sounds kind of vain but I think I kind of inspire myself? I’ve always wanted to be a runner, and had previously started c25k several times, but I always gave up a few weeks in. But I guess something in me snapped this past April and I was so determined. I flew through c25k and kept pushing and now I can finally call myself a runner! I’m not someone who’s usually good at sticking to anything new so I’m really proud of myself.
Of course, I’m also super inspired by all the members of this thread and aspire to be as great as some of you someday.
2). In December 2019, I hope to have accomplished completing my first half marathon! That alone would be HUGE for me. I’d also like to shed the pesky 10-15 pounds that don’t seem to want to come off. In fact, I’ve actually put on 5 pounds since August, despite running more than ever. Damn you runger 😭
On another note, has anyone noticed weird body changes running? When I was at the weight I am now a few years ago prior to running, I was a size 12 US, but I’m now a size 6 at the exact same weight i was then(give or take 5 pounds). Looking at pictures, I look the same way i did when i was almost 20 pounds lighter. The body is a mysterious thing. I’m assuming it’s a muscle thing but idk10 -

Partly cloudy, 51 degrees F, and a moderate breeze out of the south. It was very nice to be able to get out in shorts and a short sleeved shirt again. I felt 20 pounds lighter.

@amirahdaboss I don't think that sounds vain at all. We should be inspired by our accomplishments. If we weren't inspired or encouraged by them, i dont think we'd keep at it. Running does wonders for self discipline, self confidence and that since of accomplishment. We all need more of that in our lives.
I wouldn't trust US sizes. I think some time ago they were changed. When i was 18, 118 lbs i wore a size 7-8 in pants. Today i wear a 4-6 and about 5 pounds heavier. I remember being shocked as a young adult seeing female weight lifters that weighed the same a i did, but they were huge, er riped. But larger yet smaller it was so shocking to see how different the body looks and weight is the same.
I saw an image of several women the same weight but very different shapes. I cant find it exactly but heres an example.

It's 5.42pm here. That's too early to go to bed, right? I'm sitting here struggling to keep my eyes open! May have something to do with running all the miles then eating all the carbs......
I'm struggling to come up with exact answers to the questions.
1) Inspiration: runners who inspire me.... well everyone here, there's such an amazing collection of people who do amazing things while juggling lives and so on and so forth. Also a couple of elderly looking runners who I often see by the beach here, no idea exactly how old they are but I would say 70s at least and almost every time I go down that way there they are. Not only that but they and a few other women my age are the only people who meet my eyes and return the smile I make myself give everyone I cross. The younger (and especially young male) runners act like they can't even see me. Gits.
In life in general, and the main reason for the huge changes I've put myself through over the last couple of years, I can give two:
My daughter (although she's driving me to insanity recently) is the first. On my 39th birthday I decided she (and I) deserved a better mother than the chain-smoking borderline obese depressed one she had. 23 months later I'm on my way to HM1, almost 2 years smoke free and 28 kilos lighter.
And my mother. She grew up with an alcoholic father, has been through two divorces, survived breast cancer and married the love of her life after 15 years of being thrown together then apart again by all sorts of complications, including his disabled son. 5 months after their wedding he died from what the doctors initially said was a stomach upset and turned out to be an infection that caused multi-organ failure. Watching her put herself back together and carry on has been more than inspirational.
2) REALLY can't come up with an answer to number 2. With all the curveballs life is throwing my way at the moment I'm going to say just getting to December 2019 without having been locked up in a mental institution will be a huge achievement. Anything else we'll consider a bonus, but hopefully there will be a couple more HMs in the mix :-)

@amirahdaboss Have you ever taken measurements of yourself? I like to use those along with weight to track. Though @Elise4270 has a good point - sizes are different, even between manufacturers. The range of jeans I can fit in varies greatly just because of that.
Who inspires me as a runner?
- A former co-worker started running this summer and posts some of her workouts on Facebook. Her dedication kicked off my desire to start running again.
- My oldest son worked his butt off toward a 300-point US Army Physical Fitness Test (2 min pushups, 2 min situps, 2 mile run) which he achieved with 79 push ups, 85 sit ups and a 12:53 run. That continues to inspire me, and that was 8 years ago. Some day I hope to make him proud of me, too.
- Finally, my mom. She retired early due to depression, was diagnosed with COPD and most recently with diabetes. At 71, she is overweight, lives almost 24/7 on oxygen, takes countless daily medications and spends most of her time in her bed. She gets winded just walking to the kitchen, and taking a shower leaves her exhausted for the rest of the day. Today's my 48th birthday and I want to remain active and as healthy as I can, for as long as I can.
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
- I'll have run with consistency for one year.
- I'll have run our local 12k race for the third time with my best time yet.
- I'll have finished a half marathon!!
Today I ran a very slow 5k, trying to keep my heart rate out of zone 5. Had a few walk breaks. Also stopped a few times for dogs... and once after a driveway misstep landed me face down on the ground. Luckily I didn't faceplant, though it was close!

The temps earlier in the week were in the 20s, and now it is in the 70s. It was a warm and humid run today.
Who inspires me as a runner?
Anyone who tries, no matter how slow, is an inspiration. I see lots of people in races who are always there, even if they are never at the top. That gave me motivation when I started running to just do my best.
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
I will have improved my half marathon time.
I will have continued to maintain a decent diet so that I can at least stay at my current weight.

So with the dreadmill here I highly suggest you et a fan that moves back and for. Set it up around your head level and point it at or across your face. This will help you breathe and make sure you are not standing in a cloud of bad air (not a problem when you run outside).
For now, since it sounds like you are starting at 0 leave the incline at 0% or 1% for now. Build slowly. Spend a few weeks experimenting with speeds, inclines, distances, and the like till you have an objective idea of where you really are. Then build from there.

I am really frustrated right now. It is SIXTY-TWO DEGREES AND SUNNY but due to meetings and etc I will not get to run outside today. I might be able if I am "lucky" get an hour on the dreadmill.

Well I made it through the first three pages, but catching up the rest of the way is going to have to wait! I’ve got no mileage goal for December right now. I just want to keep running regularly. I’m going to say at least twice a week, to make it measurable and (hopefully) achievable.
No running for three days and probably not today either - this is our last weekend with the old house and my husband hurt himself halfway through the Great Clean yesterday, so I’m finishing up myself. The postal service misdelivered my cyber Monday REI pants, so that stinks too. Also I ripped a toenail way too low and that’s still healing. Also also, I’ve overindulged this weekend and blew my calorie goal all to hell.
But in spite of all of that, I feel good. I can feel myself recharging after the stress of the last few weeks, and the new house is becoming more like home every day.
Question of the month! My mom was probably my main inspiration to get in shape, although unfortunately as a cautionary tale. I’ve been watching her deteriorate over the last few years and knew that I didn’t want to be there in 30 years if there was anything I could do to avoid it.
These days I’m kind of on a self-inspiration track. Late Summer/Early Fall Me kicked a lot of *kitten* and knowing that I could run all those miles then really does help me keep on lacing up the shoes and heading out there.5 -

The weather here today was great - got up to about 50 degrees and the rain in the forecast didn't materialize. It was even kind of sunny for a while. I took the dog for a nice walk in the morning. Got some raking done that never got done before it snowed in mid-November. Still not done with that and need to haul leaves somewhere but at least the majority of the back yard is not smothered by leaves. Finally I got a run in and enjoyed being able to wear capri pants and just a light weight long sleeve.
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Good question. I want to be able to report that:- I ran my fastest half marathon
- I finished the sprint Spartan race and didn't embarrass myself (too much)
- I ran a race every month of the year
- I kicked some *kitten* and took some names

I had a race scheduled this morning but I didn't go. I didn't sleep well but got up and started getting ready. I was about halfway through my oatmeal I started crying. I couldn't stop and was still crying when I should have been leaving. So needless to say I did not make it to the race. (For those not in the facebook group, I lost my dad about a month and a half ago very suddenly and unexpected. I didn't share here because it was extremely painful for me. It's still very hard)
I decided to go for my run this afternoon. My new training plan had 8-10 miles with 3x100m strides. I took it pretty easy for most of it. I ran two miles, walked .25, repeat until the strides at the end. I wasn't up for much more but I wanted to at least get the minimum of my scheduled miles.18 -

Friday felt like gravity was extra strong...I was feeling very sluggish and heavy. Friday night and Saturday was sick with head and stomach issues. Felt better when I woke up Sunday after sleeping about 11 hours. After church did my 17 mile long run. I went ahead and walked during my water / fuel breaks. I think it helped, and didn't add too much to the overall time. Will continue to use that stradegy on the long, long runs.
ETA: This was my longest run to date. Each weekend, other than cut-down weeks, I'll be setting new distance PRs. That makes me smile

Who inspires me to run?
Honestly, everyone on this MFP thread. You all are my running family, and I get all my support and inspiration from all of you. The only IRL running person I have is my brother, and he live 1000 miles away. I learn so much here, and get motivated every day by all the success (and even the challenges) everyone goes through. Thank you for being here.13 -

So, I feel a little less like death this morning but still not up to running. My ribs hurt from coughing so much. Ugh.
Who inspires me to run? Besides you guys? The women runners in my running group inspire me. Half of them are doing the "run a marathon in every state" thing. Crazy! They were super supportive during my first marathon training.
Group question: Is anyone doing the Run the Year challenge? I am thinking about it for 2019.
