I had a desperate need to walk down to the river today before the snow started. It was absolutely beautiful and it even got above freezing for part of my walk. 😁 Now I’m hoping our sidewalks don’t end up frozen so I can run tomorrow. It doesn’t look like it should be too bad.

I felt great until kilometre 13 or so, saw some funny things, had a few giggles, saw my husband and daughter on a corner..... kilometres 14 to 17 were hard going, my knee started to feel sore and there were a few "wtf am I doing this for" thoughts. Then we turned back towards the city centre and I realised there were only 4km to go and picked up. Passed a few people who had run out of gas, munched on a few jelly babies and got back in the game. I passed the 20km marker at 2 hours 22 and got it in my crazy head I should try to finish in under 2 and a half hours. Missed it by 19 seconds, dammit! My legs will tell me all about why that was a really stupid idea tomorrow no doubt, but for today I'm happy! Average pace according to my app was 7 minutes per kilometre. I'll take it!
For now I'm pretty much decided I'm doing another one on March 24th. Hopefully my legs and knees will agree after a few days rest and a the rest of December in easy run/recovery mode.
ETA not quite how I wanted to photos to work, lol still learning!
That looks beautiful! Would make a great destination race. Congratulations!!!2 -
I’m sorry I haven’t been around the last few weeks, but I’m still alive and running!!
I ran the Busch Gardens Christmas Town dash 8k last Sunday. It was warm and misty and fun. I finished in 42:38 and finished 6th in my age group. This is by far my favorite medal just because it is so cute!
I had been debating whether or not to attempt a marathon distance as I approached the end of my training plan... I was torn because the plan only had me run 18 miles as my longest run. I was really doubting that I could make the jump from 18 to 26.2. Well, what convinced me to give it a go was the fact that if I restarted a new training plan it would put me past my 41st birthday. I really wanted to say I ran a marathon at 40...
So this happened Friday
I did it! I felt pretty good, though I did walk a few times. I fueled with 24oz Gatorade, 1 gu, and one packet honey stingers. My stomach didn’t revolt on me and I finished in time to get my kids from school 🙂
2 days later I don’t even feel sore, so I’m thrilled that I must have done something right!!
Happy running to you all and Merry Christmas if I don’t make it back to the thread before then!!
Awesome job! You just went out and ran marathon distance on your own? That takes some willpower-congratulations!!!3 -
Dh is just showering up after his first marathon. I doubt he'll pop in for an update. I'll suggest it. He finished 4:29:20 with muscle cramps in the finishers tent that droped him to the ground where the EMT's were anxious to cart him to an aid station. He declined. Beast. I'd have said "yes please baby me". They offered him beer. He declined that too saying hed like to keep his 14 years sober. What about me? I'd have drank it? Ah well.
Looks brutal. I don't wanna run a marathon. Yall are crazy.22 -
@eleanorhawkins & @zdyb23456 Congrats and great job!2

It was a gorgeous sunny day, right around 30 degrees when I finally got out for my run. I ran the trails and they were in pretty good condition with the snow packed down but not icy. The first stretch was a bit uneven in footing and I almost turned back but I was glad I stuck it out. It felt hard today though. I really wanted it to be a nice feel good sunshiney run but I was sluggish and just had to get through. Not really a long run and the miles this week were not good, so hopefully next week will be better.
Great job on your race @eleanorhawkins!
And @zdyb23456, congrats on your race and wow - you went and ran a marathon distance in a great time all on your own! Super impressive!
@Elise4270 congrats to your husband on his marathon! Great job, sounds like he went all out.5 -

That is just wicked. Wow! What the poop. I was never worried about the zombie apocalypse, but now I guess I better watch the walking dead at least so I'm not totally unprepared!
I have a bat. I'll practice the double tap. Ooh unless I'm the zombie. I did have a dream of being hit in the head thrice on October 24th and dying. Maybe i was will be a zombie.0 -
Goals for December: 200 km (125 miles) of biking and 30 km (18.5 miles) of running.
12/04: bike 30 km (18.5 miles)
12/05: bike 20 km (12 miles) + run 6 km (3.6 miles) in 37 mins
12/06: bike 30 km (18.5 miles)
12/07: bike 30 km (18.5 miles)
Total so far: 110 km (67.5 miles) of biking and 6 km (3.6 miles) of running.Hope for some running with hubs at the weekend. Keep your fingers crossed we can synchronize!
Yeah, right, dream on @me. I had too much work to do around the house yersterday and then we met friends in the afternoon, so no chance! Today it rains dogs and cats... Tomorrow I'll give the bike a rest - too much rain is forecast. I might try again on Tuesday, though temps are falling, so it might get icy... :-|5 -
Went out for a 4.5M run today. Still a fair amount of discomfort on the right side. I’ve tried stretching, icing, and Aleve but to no help. Figured I can’t skip all my runs so I just dealt with the pain. Skipped two runs last Thursday and Friday.
12.2: 4.5 @ 9:10/M (4.5) Easy Run
12.3: 4.0 @ 9:05/M (8.5) Easy Run
12.5: 4.5 @ 9:19/M (13) Easy Run
12.9: 4.5 @ 9:13/M (17.5) Easy Run.
Goal was 120.5 for the month. No way I’ll reach that now. So I hope to hit 100 at this point.

December goal: 60 miles
12/1: 5.11 miles
12/4: 6.25 miles
12/5: 3.11 miles
12/9: 9.02 miles
23.49/60 miles completed
I had a good run this morning. I ran 9.02 miles. It was cold and cloudy when I started. But it was dry and eventually the sun started coming out. Yesterday it snowed here. I thought about going out and running just so I could say I had run in snow. But since it was only snow in the air and water on the ground I decided it wouldn't be the same as running in pretty snow. It was 39F feels like 33F when I ran today. I wore a long sleeve t-shirt with a jacket and long tights. I was pretty chilly starting out but as I went on I had to keep taking my gloves off and putting them back on. And about halfway through I took off my jacket and tied it around my waist. But my cheeks were cold. I never could really decide if I was too chilly or too warm. It was a good run though. As I was running past the golf course I saw a beautiful cardinal swoop across the road and land in a tree. And then a few beats behind him another cardinal swooped past and landed in the same tree. I wished that I could have gotten a picture. They certainly made me smile. We have a cardinal couple that lives in the trees in our yard and I saw them this morning while I was making my coffee. I did get a couple of pictures of the male outside my kitchen window.
Congrats on your race @eleanorhawkins!
@zdyb23456, cute medal! And great job running the marathon distance! You will be ready for your race for sure.
@Elise4270 congrats to your husband on his marathon!
@ContraryMaryMary That weta is creepy, but kind of cool. I wouldn't want to get too close to one though especially if they bite. That giant one is too much!

18.15 miles this afternoon. Longest run (again). Actually felt really good the whole time. This must be what it feels like to be @garygse or @alphahowls on a Tuesday Even enjoyed the 48F with 12mph North wind. Walked during water/fuel breaks, but still held those miles to under 10min. So pretty happy with my progress and actually can see myself completing the full marathon.
@zdyb23456 great job running there marathon distance! I'm both impressed and jealous.
Congrats on your race @eleanorhawkins!17 -
December Running Totals (miles)
12/1 – 18.15 partly paced run
12/2 – 8.24 easy
12/3 – rest day
12/4 – 6.51 easy with a few fartleks
12/5 – 6.31 easy
12/6 – Life Happens
12/7 – scheduled rest day
12/8 – 12.28 paced run
12/9 – 8.37 easy with a few pickups
December running total to date – 59.86
Nominal December mileage goal: 160 miles
Real Goals: Recover from the strained hamstring. Work back to running faster only as the hamstring allows. Run Freezeroo #1 as allowed by my physical condition on race day, with a blind eye toward age group standings. Have a solid base of 40 miles per week by the end of December to start Boston training.
Today's notes – Got out to run in the heat of the day, about 3:30 PM. Temperature was 34° F (1° C), roads were clear, shoulders were clear, there were still patches of snow and ice on the sidewalks. Wore my road shoes and mostly avoided sidewalks. The idea was to run a known 7.2 mile route with some rolling hills, and have the option to add distance if I felt good after 6 miles.
Took the option, and late in the run noticed I was running closer to MP than easy. Backed off a touch, then remembered I missed doing pickups in an easy run because Life Happened last Thursday. So I ran fast to the next corner. Then I saw a fire hydrant, and decided I could run fast from one hydrant to the next, on a street where I didn't remember all the fire hydrant locations. They turned out to be 100 to 200m apart, which was good for running pickups. Got 5 fast short intervals in, just to remind my legs how to turn over quickly.
Perhaps 600m from home, I noticed it was about dusk. I would have turned on the handheld light I'd brought, but it was only 600m. Got home, and it's dusk at 4:30 PM. Sigh. There's not going to be much daylight to work with on Sunday afternoons for a while.
Rest day tomorrow, and some non-running errands to get done. Tuesday I'll have to think about whether it's time to move to the indoor track for speed work. Today I had a pleasant run in nice December weather, but I can't count on the weather being nice all the time.

Kody got 5 trail miles yesterday with trail runner friend. He and I both went on a 30 minute walk today. I felt I could go longer but the doctor's voice in my head was already upset with me for that much. It felt great to be out! I wasn't sure how to dress for walking with temps in the 20's (F) and I ended up over dressing.
I don't know if I'll get any more walking in this week or not. I need to pack for a hunting trip coming up Friday, and I need to get my work done so I can take a couple days off next week for the hunt.
@eleanorhawkins well done on your race! You rocked it!
@zdyb23456 great race (and sweet medal!) and very cool to do your own marathon length run!
@Elise4270 tell DH I said congrats!! And you with your TM run..nice!!
@scott6255 sweet run!

@eleanorhawkins I knew you had it in you! Yay!
@zdyb23456 that is the cutest medal. Congrats on the marathon distance!
@Elise4270 Congrats to your husband!
I've been so tired this week, y'all! I think the weather is getting me down. Had three days off running due to nasty cold icy rain, used the opportunity to catch up on my lifting. Ran 10K today in 33 degree weather, at least it wasn't raining but the paved trails were pretty wet, finished with soggy feet. Question for everyone, how do you keep your feet from freezing when they get wet at low temps?
As usual it was fun to share in the Brotherhood of Crazy People out running in the cold. Talked to two guys who have run the cross country series I was considering and they highly recommended it. We also saw about a dozen deer and half a dozen hawks, all the wild beasts were out and about today, probably trying to make up for missed foraging in the rain.
Also, I think today may have been a PR for 10K, 1 hr 3 even, which is a 10:10 pace. We don't usually run 10K on pavement except as part of a longer easy run so have only the vaguest idea what we're capable of. As far as I can tell looking through my data our previous PR for 10k was upwards of 11 minute pace. My goal is to run a sub-hour 10k within the next year, which is 9:40 pace. Looking very doable since today's run wasn't quite easy (too cold) but wasn't all that hard either.
I like running slightly longer runs on pavement, ate a giant pile of pulled pork, Brunswick stew, and sweet potato fries afterwards and took my blood afterwards with trepidation, thinking I had overdone it on the carbs. 109 - barely elevated. It also seems like running in the cold lowers my levels more than running in normal temps, which surprised me since I would have expected it to raise my stress hormones.10 -
rheddmobile wrote: »Question for everyone, how do you keep your feet from freezing when they get wet at low temps?
This happens to me when I'm running trail in the spring thaw and have to run through icy puddles of snow melt.
For shorter runs I suffer through it, and try not to walk too much (the more I move, the warmer I'll be).
For longer runs when I think there's an actual risk of damage I circle back to my truck and change socks and shoes. I try to avoid this because inevitably I'll start the truck to warm up my feet and by the time they're warm, I'm ready to quit.
Consequently, while I don't avoid mud or puddles, I do avoid snow melt if I can.

6.37 km - Yes it's not a round number but between the wind that seemed to change direction every time we changed so it was always in your face, some super slider icy sections ( black ice as we call it ) - such a thin layer of ice you don't notice it until all of a sudden a foot goes out from under you with no warning - either on landing or push off. I had trail shoes on with no secondary ice lugs/screws as I didn't expect these conditions based on temperature we had for the last week. A friend was running with his 2 yr old in a Sport stroller and on one slight downhill section he planted both feet and just slid all the way to the bottom. I'm not talking about a steep hill but rather a very gentle slope maybe 4m of drop in 70m (15ft in 200ft). We kind of had the silent look and nod at each other and called it a day for safety reasons. Just one of those strange weather inversions where there were layers of stratified cold air causing vehicle exhaust to settle to the road creating bad conditions. It probably disappeared within an hour of the sun getting above the trees.
5 pages behind will try to get back to like and cheer.
