The diet I follow is not the keto diet. I eat all kinds of fruits. I still eat potatoes if it is baked and I eat the skin. I eat all the veggies including root veggies. I do try to eat protein at every meal not an oversized portion. My goal is to limit any kind of refined grain gluten free or not, foods with added sugars (most processed foods). I have never liked margarine. I use butter. I am trying to go to butters and cheeses that are from grass fed cows. The same for if I eat beef. I try to go for grass fed. We do have fish about once a week. I live in the midwest and we don't fish so our access to good fresh fish is limited.
I still drink Kombucha it has one fourth the sugar of orange juice. I drink it for the probiotics.
At my DS#1 new home I just had the ducts cleaned. The home was a rehab and an older home. The ducts were awful. The young man who came to do the work said when he quit going out to eat and ate a diet high in veggies and no soda he dropped 20 pounds without even trying. Because of his living and work he got back into old habits and regained his weight. He just improved his living situation and is hoping to get back on track. It was great for my DS to hear this. He is in the habit of going out to eat too much. I can say what I know, but to hear it from another young man it hopefully will make a difference to him. As part of helping him get a more stable home I told him I want to have cooking lessons with him. I think he is ready to try.

Hi all!
NYKAREN - Many congratulations on your daughter getting the internship. It's a hard road, politics, but with her good sense and family behind her, she has what she needs to steer the right path. Getting that glimpse behind the scenes will be an eye opener, I'm sure, whatever path she chooses.
I woke up early this morning, 4.30, and could not get back to sleep. Last night there were a couple of small niggles from my family that got to me. I was feeling aggrieved. I could not shake it off, though I tried. Ho hum. So I'm up and talking to you.
Today my son leaves at 1 pm and our other guests arrive at the same time. I'm doing a big batch of egg sandwiches for everyone to pick at. Might have a few cheese ones. Being a hostess is beginning to feel old already. I'm not enjoying being the servicer. Grrrrrrrrrr! However, my DSIL is good company and her boyfriend is nice, so I'm sure we will have a good time together. At one point we thought they would be delayed because the boyfriend's car was vandalised, but they are coming in hers.
Karen - I'm sure you can find Airsoft Action TV on Utube. The latest one is about his trip to the battlefield of Waterloo. They do vary, but my favourite ones are just him and a mate talking. He is Tom 'Anvil' Hibberd. They set it all up themselves and learnt as they went along.
Onward! Going to make tea and set up breakfast. Boil some eggs for sandwiches.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx1 -
Thanks, Heather! I shall watch a video or two. About being the Chief Cook & Bottle Washer, I recommend delegating several tasks to guests. When I am a guest, I love it when my hostess gives me a job to do.
Happy Birthday, Felicia!
Margaret How is your son doing in his new home?
********
Oh, it's so hard to go back to school when you are 12 and you've had so many snow days! But we muddled through...grandson did Math, Health, Civics, & PE. Skipped Language & Science since he was caught up in those subjects. He is studying probability in Math, & though he would never admit it, he enjoys it. What is the probability of picking an orange marble? In Civics, he is studying state & local governments. I mentioned that my home state of Nebraska has a unicameral legislature. He was not interested, but I thought it was fascinating, which he found amusing.

I'm getting some Christmas shopping done. Thank goodness for Amazon.

Well, I got an early Christmas gift. After Newcomer bowling, Vince said that he needed to do something. Why it never occurred to me, I don't know. He went to the airport and picked Jess up, I guess she got here around 1.
Karen in VA - when I'd set up for Newcomers, it used to be when someone asked "do you need any help", I said "I think things are under control, thank you very much". Now I say things like "would you please get the basket over there"
I just realized that Vince never bought his underwear. I think I'll stop at Aldi's tomorrow on our way back from the inspection. Hopefully, he'll stop at the store on his way back, too.

I guess in a way I wish Jess would find someone other than Colby. He's nice, don't get me wrong. Just that he doesn't have any ambition. He doesn't have a college degree, yet he says all the time that he wants a job where he gets paid more. Well, if you don't have the education, you aren't going to get a top-paying job. But I know that I can't tell her who to be with. I hope (but I'm afraid) that she'll wind up supporting him. That's what happened when he was out of job. I know it wasn't easy for her, but she did it. I know that he felt he wanted to do more but couldn't.

OK, I am officially stressing While I'm sitting here eating cookies, I'm thinking about all the things that still need to be done. Like Vince hasn't finished his shopping, the presents aren't wrapped. Here I was planning that Jess wouldn't be here until Saturday. Vince knew that she'd be here today, why didn't he plan to have at least the presents wrapped by now? I've already told him that I want Saturday to do things like make the soup and have it in the refrigerator, I need to go to the store and buy the fish, the potatoes, and the oranges. I'd like to get the pie made also. Stress eating...here we come!

A few things ...
• I had my broken tooth fixed today ... finally. It was really starting to bother me. More had broken off since my dental appointment almost a month ago, it had sharp edges, and I think I was starting an infection. The numbness is just coming out now and my initial impression is that it feels somewhat better, although the filling is quite high so I might need it shaved down.
• My husband sees the neurosurgeon tomorrow ... finally! This is about his leg and back. I hope it goes well and we move toward resolving the issue.
• I've got another large-ish assignment due this Saturday. I've started it but I need a flash of inspiration to get rolling. And then the next Friday, I have my exam.
I'm going to need to use the mouth guard I got. Last night I discovered that I not only grind my teeth, I clench them so tight, I've actually packed down the filling.
We went to the neurosurgeon today and saw a whole bunch of scans of my husband's brain and back.
The neurosurgeon told us that my husband's recovery was remarkable, especially given the amount of damage. The very fact that a) he can speak, and b) he can speak as well as he can is incredible. The scans indicate that he would not likely be able to do either.
The neurosurgeon was also a bit surprised that he is doing as much activity as he is. The fact that he has cycled as much as 27 km in one go already is amazing ... evidently most people in a similar condition do not do that within the first year of an accident.
However, his numb leg and foot is not his back. His back has some wear and tear, but the numbness is likely because of all the stuff they had to give him during his time in ICU. Evidently the choice was save his life and make the best choices for his brain OR be concerned about side effects like numb feet.
Chances are, he'll go for more testing.
On our walk back into the middle of the city, we stopped at the Cat Cafe ... and played with cats. One sat on my husband's lap for a while. It's the first time we've been in there.
And then tonight we went to a Christmas Carols Service ... nice.
Now ... back to homework.

Michelle step away from the cookies.........
Rita sounds like you are forming a plan, my bff who is very addicted to sugar has found really great food choices and is no longer jonesing for all things sweet. She is much happier, fewer headaches and no more UTIs! So there are lots of benefits to reducing processed sugar from your eating.
I went to a social event afterwork, was AF but did overdo it on the chicken satay, oops. It was not fun to socialize but it was a professional responsibility and I'm proud I went, usually I avoid this annual event, but wanted my mentee to experience it. I broke the ice for her, stayed a bit and left after one hour Today I will steer through professional development meetings, always fun but have plans to eat well, hit the gym and generally remind myself that things will get done.

Katie & Penny - so glad the news is good for both your parents!
Allie - enjoy the holiday season. The new year may bring wonderful news, like a dentist buying the practice who believes in paying people well.
Felicia - happy belated birthday!
JanetR - The only live ballet I've ever seen was The Nutcracker, and it was in a small enough venue that you could literally hear the performers' feet when they hit the floor after their jumps. It was amazing, great memory. You'll love it! What a lovely gift.
Rori - Thinking about you, lady. Glad you're getting out and seeing others whenever you can.
I got my first grant application for this council out the door yesterday, and meeting with the program folks this morning for the first report I'll get done here, and the second is due before holidays, too. I know it's a weird idea of fun, but it kind of is... there are so many things to learn in the upcoming weeks, and so happy to be learning them. This council, like my old one, shuts down for ten days off between Christmas and New Year's, so at the end of next week, I'll be off from Friday the 21st until January 2, and then will be in Little Rock for my onboarding.
Fighting the weight to a standstill, but not losing, as I'm not eating well. The only reason it's not going up is because I'm not eating both the things I should eat AND the things I shouldn't. Just eating the things I shouldn't. Not a good way to go about it, but trying not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
Love the pics of the quilts, the ornaments, the grands and great grands, yourselves and friends, all the things that you share about your lives, and feel especially blessed to be part of this group. I actually slept for slightly more than seven hours last night, so am feeling rested and ready to finish up my last day of my first workweek.
Love y'all,

I'm easing back into the thread, reading to catch up with y'all. My dad is doing so well... and he and my mom are delighted to be able to sleep in the same bed again. Dad went to bed a bit early last night (say 9 pm) and Mom asked if she could come to bed as well. Dad said yes she could, provided she took her clothes off first. (Sorry if that's TMI.) But even for ME, as a daughter, who has every reason to be frightfully embarrassed it's a true delight to hear those two nonagenarians smooch and spoon.

I agree, great thread. I've been logging all of my calories. But, I've just been trying to survive in my fairly new job; while looking for another. I leave work and go home and search for work on my home computer. But I am going to exercise this afternoon. I can't wait! It does help decrease my stress. Eating less is also making me feel better. Finding another job will be the best for my health, overall!3

Michele ~ I am sure that it will all work out. Try not to worry too much!
Embarrassed to say that the top I was fussing about yesterday came over night! I ordered in on the 3rd and it should have been delivered between the 7th and 12th.
I am trying to clean the ceiling fan and glass light shade in my kitchen. Boy, is it dirty! Anyhow, I just read that I should be using white vinegar diluted in water so will try that after the glass cleaner.

Penny: Your parents sound like delightful people. I’m happy for them and for you.
Yvonne: I’ve never heard of National Day of the Horse before. Thanks for the information. The ancient horse history I learned fits very well with what you just said. There was a land bridge between Alaska and Asia that was crossed by humans and other animals in prehistory. Whether the humans used kayaks to cross from island to island is part of the theory. Supposedly, the early American people hunted the horse to extinction and the early Spanish explorers brought them back.
Dr Katie: Good news about your breasts! I’m glad that worry is off of your mind.
Trish: Our Christmas plans are also no plans. Our kids are thousands of miles away. We are likely to get phone calls, but that is about it. It is hard not to feel sorry for ourselves. :ohwell:
(((Rori))) I hope you enjoyed visiting with friends at the condo owners meeting.
Happy belated Birthday, Felicia!
Rita: Congrats on your new eating plan. WTG!
Machka: It sounds like your DH is doing much better than the medical team predicted. I suspect much of the credit falls to you and to his own inner determination.
Allie: What is a yankee swap?
Pip: We’ve found a great use for old plastic bags— after we’ve filled up the bin with old bags, we donate them to the food bank so that people have something to carry away their food.
Terri: Your flower arrangement is beautiful! :flowerforyou:

Yankee swap is where you bring a wrapped present worth a set amount and you pick numbers..then when you pick a present and unwrap it and if someone else likes it they can swap you..1

Went shopping for Keto foods per doc and diet app today. My DH took one look at my cart and said he is living this new 'fat' diet! Lol. Just a modified Atkins to me which I followed a few years ago after a cardiologist recommended it to me.
Both my DH and I had EKG's done today. Now have referral to cardiologist. Not Happy.bi hope this diet change improves things.

So I went for a mammogram this morning and went and did a little shopping. I got home to find my husband in the middle of making an apple pie and a chocolate cheesecake for the dinner tomorrow with his side of the family. He had chocolate on the floor, the lower cupboard doors, the backsplash, the paper towel holder, the butter dish and in his mustache from licking the spoon. Then he forgot to put aluminum foil around the bottom of the spring-form pan so butter is running all over the bottom of the oven and the kitchen is filled with smoke. I told him next time be bakes I'm putting him in a paper hazmat suit, covering his work shop in plastic wrap and sending him out there to bake. Arrrgh. So guess who cleaned the mess and did dishes. The good news is, both the pie and cheesecake look beautiful.

Allie: Thanks for the explanation of a Yankee Swap. I have been in a group that did the same thing, but they didn’t call it a Yankee Swap. I don’t remember what they did call it, though.
Felicia: I love your family picture.
Rita: I hope that your new diet works well and that your cardiologist approves.
I had a lovely time at yoga this morning. After the workout was done we sat and chatted a bit. Our local Fred Meyer store still goes by that name, but they’re now being managed by Kroger and they have made numerous changes. None of the locals are happy with the changes. They still have one feature that will take me there—a section of bulk foods where we can choose a product and pit it in a plastic bag to take home. Medium grain brown rice is something I like to buy there, and dried cranberries is another. Otherwise I’m not planning to shop there. I used to buy fresh fish at the meat counter & that is still an open question. I’ll have to take some time and see what they’re doing now.
