Margaret: I’m so glad your diet has done such good things for your health. WTG!!! DH was put on a FODMAP diet by his physician and it has been a huge help in improving his quality of life. He had terrible diarrhea. He has eliminated gluten, including anything with wheat in it. it has served him well. I still eat regular bread and things made with wheat. We have discovered that we can make very satisfying cakes simply by using gluten free baking flour from Bob’s Red Mill instead of wheat flour. The cakes taste fabulous and have a good texture. We don’t make cakes very often. Gluten free is NOT calorie free. :noway: I wish you best luck with your new food regime.
Felicia: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! It is sunny here, too. The Multnomah Channel of the Willamette River enters the Columbia just a few hundred yards downstream from us.

I won't be disappointed if they forget. I'm not sure who reminded them it was my birthday. I don't think they've ever remembered on their own before, but when I asked my 12 year old who reminded them, he was insulted. "You're our mother. We remembered on our own." Sure. Right. My husband is in Florida this week, so we will celebrate this weekend.
Last day of finals today. Tomorrow is the university Christmas breakfast party, then next week should be nice and quiet. I need a break from faculty and students. Love them. But love when they're gone, as well.
Much love to everyone. Welcome to the newbies.

I'm dealing with lots of weird cravings this week. The last couple of days it's been french fries, soda (which I rarely drink so I'm not sure where that one is coming from), and then today, great big banana chocolate chip muffins that I used to get at the local grocery store. So far, I haven't given in to any of them. I'm finally starting to lose a little weight and don't want it to come back.
DD put the Christmas tree up the other day while DH and I were at work. Right now it only has simple ball ornaments on it (silver, gold, red and white). This weekend I'll get out the rest of the ornaments. We used to buy each of the kids their own ornament every year when they were growing up so they'd have something with memories to put on their trees as they got out on their own. I think DS took his last year for his own tree, but DD's are still with us since she's still with us . I'll try to finish the rest of the decorations this weekend too. We don't put up a lot, but I like to have at least some festive things around the house.

Pip ~ Thanks for your advice about Amazon. I had ordered two shirts from Beall's Dept store. One came and the other seems to have disappeared into thin air. I went back to Amazon after what you said and read the buyer's reviews. There were many, many who said they had not received their order or that it took forever. Makes me sad because I have been ordering from Beall's quite a bit over the past few years but first time from Amazon.
Rita ~ Cute photos.

I received an early Christmas present yesterday from my oldest daughter, officially now a CPA. She bought tickets for me and her youngest daughter (the one that got married in July) to attend the Nutcracker Ballet next Friday night. I am super duper excited

I'm easing back into the thread, reading to catch up with y'all. My dad is doing so well... and he and my mom are delighted to be able to sleep in the same bed again. Dad went to bed a bit early last night (say 9 pm) and Mom asked if she could come to bed as well. Dad said yes she could, provided she took her clothes off first. (Sorry if that's TMI.) But even for ME, as a daughter, who has every reason to be frightfully embarrassed it's a true delight to hear those two nonagenarians smooch and spoon.

Today is National Day of the Horse!
I always wanted to have horses but it never happened so I'll celebrate them vicariously: "National Day of the Horse encourages people of the United States to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history and character of the United States. The domesticated horse we know today, also known as Equus caballus, was introduced into North America by Spanish explorers. Escaped horses eventually spread across the American Great Plains. Interestingly, there is a debate about the origin of E. caballus. There have been recent mitochondrial studies of an ancient horse called Equus lamei. E. lamei once populated North America and died out more than 11,000 years ago. The studies suggest it is genetically equivalent to what we know as the modern, domesticated horse. This could mean that E. caballus is technically a native species and its evolutionary origin is North America. Aside from the anthropological debate, the horse has contributed greatly to the advancement of civilization in North America. From clearing forests for farmland and a form of travel bringing pioneers to the west to diversifying Native Americans’ hunting habits and rounding up livestock on ranches, the horse is embedded in American history and legend."
Katla - I can sympathize over the gluten-free learning curve. I've been having digestive issues lately and one of the things the gastro specialist looked at was celiac disease. (I didn't even know you could acquire that later in life!) At any rate, it would have been very challenging for us to make that change but fortunately celiac was ruled out so we didn't have to. It's hard enough to cook for family gatherings without one more thing on the "can't-have" list!
Tracey - I would prefer to have space for house guests, but it's just not possible for us now and we're talking about going smaller still so I've got to give up the guest room idea. We have a sofa and a futon, and we can always put guests up in the camper overnight.
Willow - Your upholstery fabric quilt is lovely. All those textures make it really interesting. What a kind gift!
Katie - Glad your mom is doing well. She'll probably recover better at home anyway IF she can restrain herself from doing too much!
Felicia - Happy birthday!
I got the Christmas stockings down from the attic. Now I just have to clear out space in the living room so I'll have a place to put them! I might save it for tomorrow though. Philip gave me his cold, and I woke up about 3:45 this morning with a scratchy throat so I'm resting this evening. Tomorrow we both have the day off so we can work together on preparing for Christmas dinner guests.
I need to find a riding stable around here...

Happy birthday, Felicia!
Hope you can get your refund, Carol. I’ve only once not received something I ordered from Amazon ( and it was from Amazon). It took forever for me to figure out how to talk to a real person to tell them I didn’t get it although it said it had been delivered. The person was super nice and sent me another one right out. One other time I’m not sure if it was my mistake or Amazon’s but I got the Arabic version of a book I ordered instead of the English version. I tried to return the Arabic version but they told me not to bother and sent me the English version for free. I really had no need for a book in Arabic, but I had a friend whose daughter lived in Dubai, so I gave it to her to pass on.
The surgeon is dismissing me without a biopsy. He agrees with me that my breasts are just sore from exercise because the left one feels just like the right one. He said cancer would not be that symmetrical.
I did not go to Mama’s today. My sister reports that she helped fold laundry! I have a feeling the home health care nurse is not really going to be needed. I will go back tomorrow and let my brother give me an estimate on my car while I’m there. His body shop is next door to Mama’s house.
Someone asked about the deer. It is not unusual for me to see 6 or 8 on my way home from Mama’s, usually on the rural backroads and in my residential neighborhood. I am continually alert in those areas. These were in town so I had relaxed my lookout, plus my mind was preoccupied with all I had going on.
Did I tell y’all my car was also beeping that my key fob battery was dead? Well, I’m proud to report that I watched a YouTube video and changed that sucker myself. No trip to the dealership on top of everything else I have to do. Just a quick 5 minute stop at the Dollar General for a new battery.
Later, friends. I’m going to wrap some presents.

Happy Birthday, Felicia.
DH being a pill today. I'm feeling all the HALT attributes. I've got him seated and eating dinner, and he will doze off 5 mins after he finishes. I am going to make a tall cup of tea and walk over to the condo owners annual meeting. Always cheers me up to see my favorite neighbors.

Did a strength training DVD today. They’re calling for rain tomorrow and I really don’t feel like going to the gym in the rain, so I’ll ride the recumbant bike some
Kay – Awesome that your mom is home. In a way, it’s good that they didn’t keep her in the hospital. Sad to say, but the longer a person is in the hospital, usually they get sicker, there are so many germs in a hospital. So it’s a blessing in disguise that she’s home
M – yea for you, your tooth, the class, your grade, hubby getting to see the neurologist. But sorry the workload is getting to be more. Like you need that now
Allie – what is a yankee swap?
Carol GA – if you purchased the item thru an Amazon Marketseller, they won’t refund the money. I’d continue buying from Amazon and in the future just be sure that I’m not purchasing anything from a Marketseller
Felicia – happy birthday! Good luck on your finals. Jess is having hers this week and I can tell that she’s really stressing
Had Newcomer bowling tonight. We are going to get 2 of our vehicles inspected tomorrow
Janetr – enjoy the ballet! What an awesome gift
Katie – fantastic news from the doctor. Your mother is doing so well. I hope the estimate isn’t high at all. Yea for changing that battery yourself

Day 1 of eating plan went well. Watched video on sugar addiction. Took test and confirmed I already knew... I have a sugar addiction. Working on that. Lots of good info on the DietDoctor website.
