Happy Saturday!
Barbie - we, like you, are well prepared for several day power outages. Drinking water, check. Flush water, check. Food that doesn't have to be cooked, check. Have the camp stove set up in the potting shed & attached to propane tank for heating water if need be. Our winds were minor compared to yours but the lights blinked a couple times from trees down a mile or so from here - enough to have to reset digital clocks and the internet conked out for a bit.
We had bad news and good news yesterday. Bad news - I discovered a leak under the bathroom sink. Good news - it hadn't leaked (dripped) for more than a day I'm guessing , just got a little box wet. I rarely go under the sink in the back of the cabinet where extra cleaning supplies are stored so I'm giving thanks big time. DH checked it out, appears it's in the faucet mechanism and some drips from the on/off valve going into the wall....we'll have a plumber come out to fix this one. Sink and faucet are over 20 years old so will swing by Home Depot one of these days and grab new ones. It's not an emergency, have a plastic container set under there now to catch the drips....it's coming from the cold water side.
I'd been wanting to declutter under there anyhow, so it's all good. Lots went into the trash.
Lisa - thank you for posting your progress photos! Very, very inspirational. How thrilling for you to see them! Yes, they need to get your vacation pay straightened out. How neat this new job is for you - close by, work at home.... could it be much better?
Sharon - all systems go for you with the surgery in January, woo hoo!!
Carol - so glad the top you ordered from Amazon arrived. I've always had good luck with them, often received replacements when the original item was lost in the mail (eventually showed up.) I know USPS has a hard time keeping up and delivers them somewhere in the neighborhood and calls it good or sticks the package under a bush... shows online that it's been delivered. I think similar happened to Katla last year or the year before?
Michele - I keep forgetting to tell you I am so excited for Jess going through veterinary school!! Getting wonderful grades!! Does she ever talk about where she'd like to practice when she gets through?
Machka - thanks to your good care and your DH's determination, no wonder his progress is astounding to the doctors. Is there any kind of therapy to help with his short term memory loss? That cat café is something else! I love friendly kitties. Your DH looks so content and peaceful holding that bundle of purr.
Kay - so glad your mom is home and doing so well!!! She is one tough lady!!
Heather - neat photos of your son and so glad he's found his niche. Hope your DSIL's visit goes well and you can relax into the holiday and just enjoy your new house and neighborhood.
Looks like I'll be washer/dryer shopping. Washer kind of on the fritz a couple weeks ago, I was getting an "F" error but was able to run a rinse and drain cycle. Tried putting it on a different setting which worked well until this morning, thankfully rinse and drain saved the day again. Calling out a repairman (takes them weeks to come by then weeks more after they figure out which part to order) will be almost as expensive as buying a new one.
Will be shopping for the largest capacity with the fewest options, lol. Hot, warm, cold. Cold rinse. Top loading. Nothing fancy schmanzy and the fewer computerized parts the better. Dryer still works fairly well but often gives surprises and goes from warm to HOT quicker than I'd like. I want one with just a "summer clothesline" setting, lol. Let's see if something like what I want even exists anymore - will hit Home Depot on Monday.
Like Karen in VA - we have money socked away in the emergency/replacement fund just for things like this. Karen, I always get a kick out of reading about your grandson's lessons. So neat this is working out for him and you!
Felicia - happy belated Birthday! Great photo of you and the boys! Hope the terminated employee is settled down and moving on with his life. I'm not sure the circumstances regarding him (budget? performance?) but the few times I had to terminate I remember the conversation centered around being a 911 dispatcher just not being a good fit for them. I had one trainee break down in tears, thanking me.... she didn't have the courage to quit and was so afraid she'd take a call, mess it up, resulting in loss of life or someone's safety. It was early on in her training, hence her termination. But we parted with no hard feelings and that meant a lot.
That's it for now!

My DDIL sent me this today.
We had a lovely time with my DSIL and her boyfriend. The meze dinner was a huge hit and hardly any trouble. But I am so glad to have our house to ourselves again.
I napped for an hour on the sofa thus afternoon. Bliss! DH didn't sleep last night. Combination of too much alcohol and stress from house guests. He went upstairs to read for most of the night. I switched to AF wine after the champagne. Good move.
So, now we've got Christmas with the grandchildren on the 22nd, and DH's daughter on the 23rd. No one staying over.
DH just spilt a glass of red wine all over the sofa. Grrrrrrrrrr! I did my best with a cloth, but I think it's a stripping off and washing machine job.
Heather UK, feeling more relaxed despite the WIND and the RAIN. UK. XXXXXXXX

Well I am once again caught up. Last month has flown by and one thing after another. Our DF with pancreatic cancer passed away Nov 30. The last week was really hard as they kept him home and DH was there everyday. The morning he passed another friend daughter had her baby 17 weeks early. He lived for 36 hours. And our DD that has been living with us pushed me to the limit and I kicked her out. I just was tired of her lying and doing things that were just not right. So her and our ex-bil moved into an apartment together. I am doing my best to just let it go as she is 42 years old and is going to have to learn the hard way. Then I am working 50plus hours a week as one person is out of medical leave until the first part of next month. Found out today that another one of my girls found out her husband has stage 4 cancer that has spread to his liver and lungs. So I don't expect her to be working much longer. Mine is a 24\7 department and so someone has to be here at all times. One day at a time. To say the least my eating is out of control and I feel terrible. Reading with her girls here reminds me I am not a lone and this to will pass. Thanks for listening and I am not giving up. I did go to the doctor this last week and he removed a spot from my hand that we are waiting for the results to come back and at the same time he upped my meds so hoping that will help.
Blessings, Vicki GI NE13 -
Vicki - Sorry that times are tough for you and your family and friends. It must seem endless. I hope things get better for you. (((HUGS)))
Love, Heather UK xxxxxxx0 -
vicki and strength to you for all you are handling
I had a blessed day with my DD. I cried more than once (privately) recognizing how very lucky and privileged we are and the fact that she recognizes that is a part of what is making me proud. We all know that she’s stepping into the next phase of her life—makes me breathless and breathing deeper—if that makes sense.
My MIL is facing challenges from many different directions, health, aging and dysfunctional family (users and abusers). DH senses he is about to need to step in and lead but it’s going to be a tough road ahead we think. Step lightly and visit more is our immediate plan.

Thanks Karen and Vicki, thanks for sharing--hugs to both of you. It's a good reminder that holidays are not always cheerful for everyone. Hope things get better soon.
I'm making cookies today. I ate one Finnish pecan ball for 180 calories, so no more sampling for me. Snickerdoodles are in the oven, fruit cookie dough is chilling, and pecan tassies are next. I want to do rolled gingerbread cookies and date nut pinwheels as well. My kitchen looks like Janetr's husband has been in there.
I found some big seedless grapes, blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries at the grocery store, so I've got something sweet to nibble. I'll be able to cross something off my to-do list--yay!3 -
Lisa in AR- food is my ‘go to’ cooing mechanism as well. Doesn’t matter if I am happy, sad, mad or glad The only way I can keep it under control is to stick with my plan before I am feeling out of control. Then I don’t want to sabotage my good work so may only have a small healthy snack.
Finally working on grandsons quilt. So f at have only sewn one out of 27 strips backwards!! Lol
Keep drinking that water.

Hello All! I’ve been running between home, Bellingham and Oak Harbor ferrying around one of my grandsons on his work vacation. It’s been like a holiday party, since the ones he’s seeing are other grandkids and their friends and his parents, my middle daughter and her terrific hubby, whom I’ve “adopted”, since his parents are withdrawn and cold. I’ve lost pages and pages and am taking extra training for opening tax season two weeks AFTER my surgery Jan. 2nd. I’ll try to be more responsive when I can. I’ve plateaued, but expect to go down a bit when I start my pre-surgery diet - 3 Protein drinks, one lean cuisine meal and a cup of chopped steamed veggies a day for two weeks. I’m giving myself the best New Year’s gift I could ever have!
Janetr OKC- ]\b]My Allan was a “third time’s a charm” hubby! Isn’t it wonderful to finally catch the gold ring on the merry-go-round?
Barbie in NW WA - the rain and wind and branches hitting the roof scraped off some places, so I have a relative coming to tarp my roof today. You’re very well prepared! I have the water and food thing, and candles, but no lantern. My car can charges all my devices. Don’t you just live windstorms, though? Hearing that deep roar in the trees and watching even the mightiest bend to that overwhelming power is exhilarating to me! There are a few large trees close enough that their very top MIGHT touch the house, but none could destroy it. How close are yours?
Lisa in AR - Thank you DO much for your affirmation. I’ve been down to goal weight twice as an adult and each time gained it back and more. This surgical practice has a great setup for Bariatric patients. We have a phone and email “red phone” of sorts to the dieticians on staff, we study our post diet extensively before we have the surgery, and everyone is well-informed about the nutritional consequences up front. Not only that, we have two wonderful support group meetings a month facilitated by a psychologist and one of the dieticians. There all patients can get things like relationship changes and dietary problems discussed and resolved. We even have a clothing exchange a couple of times a year. Your pictures are so inspiring! At 75 years old, I don’t have time to try again, and doubt diet alone will work for me. This tool will be a key to a healthier, and hooefully more active future.
Vicki GI NE - ill be thinking of you and hoping some of your family and friend circle can give you a little help or boost during the times you’re going through. You sound like one of the souls who cares deeply about others’ troubles no matter that the connection is slight. Stay well, and rest when you can.1 -

This picture was taken a few years ago after a mighty wind storm and power outage. That's our house in the picture so you can see how close the trees are to our house. Some branches broke off this tree and arrangements were made to further trim the branches. The trees are dense enough around our house that we weren't able to get satellite TV service and had to opt for cable instead.

margaretturk wrote: »I am still working on reminding myself to breathe deeply especially in stressful situations. As a friend of mine told me when you are breathing deeply it is hard to feel angry or anxious.
What I mean by breathing deeply is taking in air through the nose for at least for a four count. Your stomach should expand out and then exhale for four to six counts through nose or mouth. Wait four counts and then breathe again. Try to do this for at least a minute or two.
When it is too hard to take the time to meditate this is a good alternative.
I think this is why I like to sing so much. It forces me to breathe correctly.

At times, over this past year, I've actually had to remind myself to breathe.
When I get really stressed, everything tenses up and I hold my breath or breathe really shallowly.3 -

The interesting thing about that kitty is that I picked her up to see if she'd sit in my lap, but she went straight to him and curled up in his lap. I wonder if kitties know that someone needs them.
The only thing we can do about the memory is wait and let the brain heal and rewire itself. They used to say that in situations like this, at 6 months post-accident, the healing was done. Then they pushed it out to one year. Then two years ... now they're saying that people can continue to heal for the rest of their lives. At 6 months I was a bit concerned that might be it, but I'm still seeing improvements now and we're almost at 9 months.
I'm also trying to reintroduce him to things. For example, we walked almost 3 km back into the city from the Dr. That route took us past the school he went to growing up, and past a lot of shops and things he remembered. He gave me the guided tour! Now those things are long-term memory, but maybe if he's reawakening more of that, it might help the short-term memory.Looks like I'll be washer/dryer shopping. We had a front-load washer for a little while, but started getting the error too. Before that, it has started putting black stuff on our clothes. And so we went shopping for a new one. Like you, we went for a large fairly basic top loader. The salesman kept trying to interest us in another front loader like he was trying to get rid of them!!
Interestingly, I've seen several of my family/friends on FB who have gone the front loader route for a few years and are now returning to top loader.
I'll be using my "summer clothesline" setting shortly, provided the storms predicted for this afternoon hold off. My dryer is either a drying rack inside or my clothesline outside.

Did a legs, Glutes, and Abs DVD today. The plan for tomorrow I to do a pilates DVD
The plastic bags from the grocery store that I have, if it has a hole in it, then it goes in to take back to a store to be recycled. If not, it is used to put litter in. If something happens and I have too many (almost never happens), then I’ll take it to the soup kitchen
Irish Terry – like you, I find that I’m not gaining my usual 4-5 lbs. I don’t seem to be able to have very many cookies without my stomach talking to me. I find this very interesting. The bad thing is that I don’t want to have most of what others want, like ravioli, breads, cookies, etc. Then I get the “you aren’t eating what we’re having?” And the usual “you never used to eat like this”.
Karen in VA – you’re right, Rebecca WOULD enjoy a cat café. Oh, Vince loves kitties. I’d just be afraid to take him to a cat café. Who knows what we’d come home with? And if we came home empty-handed, he’d be so bummed out.
After exercising, went to Publix to get fish for Monday (I don’t know what they’re like on Sundays, even if they’re open). Then went to WalMart to get a few things (I figured they were cheaper than Food Lion or Publix). Then made a chicken casserole for tonight for Vince and Jess. I’ve already portioned out what I’m going to have. It really is true that I want to get the butternut squash container out of the refrigerator. Update: Colby came while I was at church so he had some of the casserole, too. It's good in a sense that I didn't have any, more for them to have as leftovers
Shadow got sick most of the day yesterday and again this morning. She’s just laying on the one bed. You know, we all have those days when we just don’t feel right, I suspect that’s what it is with her. But I know Jess is very concerned. Update: she seems to be doing a lot lot better now. Acting more and more like herself
Barbie – so glad you were able to finish the class.
Lanette – glad there wasn’t a lot of damage in your bathroom. Jess doesn’t want to be a family vet. Actually, that’s probably for the best. She’s way too passionate about animals. If someone were to come in and swear to high heaven that they were taking care of their pet but it appeared they weren’t, she’d REALLY rip into them. Also, a family vet probably sees the same things over and over (ear infection, parasites etc) and she’d get bored. She wants to be a research vet. She had been working for NIH (national institute of health) doing research on AIDS, Cancer, etc. and she really loved it. I think part of the reason she’s going to vet school is because she was working under a vet there, she was doing all the same work the vet was doing but not getting the recognition or pay the vet was. So she’ll be in the Caribbean for 2 years, then come back to the States to do a year of clinical. She’s at the mall right now, was so excited to be at a mall. Actually, on the way home she was excited to be on the right when driving….lol Our repairman looked at our washer for about 5 seconds before declaring that we needed a new washing machine.
Seems Adra hurt her humerous bone and won’t be able to drive for 6 weeks. She’d told me previously that she, Greg and I needed to sit down. Well, now it won’t be until the end of January or Feb. Only I’ll be in FL in Feb. (most likely) so it’ll be either the end of Feb. or March. Personally, I think what he did was crappy, I don’t know why we are reinventing the wheel, so I really don’t care how long it takes before we get together. Actually, I want to talk to Adra first, explain my concerns to her. I told Greg one of my concerns and he got upset saying that someone with php experience should be web administrator. I really think that he’ll take what I have to say as criticisms, and that’s not the way it’s meant to be. I’m sure what he’ll say is that the directory is breaking down. Sorry…code doesn’t break down. We’re not talking food here. Then he’ll say how you can’t get the same functionality that you have with an off-the-shelf program. My question would be “why are we even bothering with an off-the-shelf program?” “Because the directory is breaking down”. “I’ve worked with it for over a year, I would noticed if it was breaking down, and it isn’t”. So I don’t care if it takes YEARS for us to “get together”. I wouldn’t care if we never “got together”
Vicki – My sincerest sympathies. You certainly have had your hands full

Trucker - save one piece of your clothing from the weight you are now - I saved a pair of 36W jeans, lugged them through the end of my previous marriage, the first ten years of this one, and innumerable moves. When I start struggling now, I pull them out and send my gratitude and respect back to the woman I was then. She had the strength to choose a different life path, and deserves that acknowledgment. It wasn't without risk, and certainly not without pain, that transition, but it was worth all of it now. I told my son Friday afternoon that, at 58 years old, I could honestly say that I'm as happy as I've ever been in my entire life. A large part of why I'm in this place was taking that step.
On a completely different note (I think) I woke up this morning with these words running around in my head, clear as day. "She found strength from a refrigerator magnet."
I'll leave you with that rather ambiguous statement. I've got some writing to do this morning.
Love y'all!

Congratulations on the job, and I'm glad to hear that it is starting well.
Did the magnet keep the refrigerator door closed?
As for dreams/waking etc. a few times lately I've been dreaming about wearing white for some reason. I don't usually wear white in waking life. But there I am in the dream selecting and wearing white ... and that's what the whole dream is about. After a few times I actually took a look in my closet for white stuff ... there isn't much!

Machka Here's what I googled about wearing white in a dream:
A white color in our dreams is mostly a good luck. A meaning of a dream where it predominates depends on the objects which are white or people who are dressed in clothes of this color. Seeing white items, animals, insects or birds which are not this color in reality can be interpreted as an omen of misfortune though.
Lisa you are a happy and inspiring woman I can only guess about that fridge magnet but I'll bet you were ready to accept the power of that quote.
I'm a fan of quotes, I find 2 or 3 every school year to focus on every year, kind of like Barbie's word of the year. On that note, I'm circling around "kindness" for my word of the year. It keeps circling back to me so I think it's gonna be the word. Though you ladies come up with some pretty good inspirational ideas, I may just hang my hat on one of yours!
Headed to MIL's today to triage and get a better idea of what's going on. Her stress level has impacted her heart condition and the doc gave her nitroglycerin, hoping she's more relaxed and comfortable today. Before we go, I'm headed to the gym, grocery shopping and gonna start a load of laundry so best get moving!

Hi all!
Went out for my run this morning while the sun was shining. Saw a very large, old lady doing something between a run and a walk. I gave her a thumbs up. She grinned at me and said, "Morning!"
Lots of runners along the front and people and dogs on the beach.
I came back and did my mat work and weights. Then I did my rowing and cycling. Counting myself 800 calories, but I will only eat back 600.
DH slept last night. Hooray!
I think I've finished my present buying now. Got Edie, as a little extra, a small first aid kit to play "baby hospital " with. I don't think there is anything dangerous in there, but we will check.
On Friday we are having Max over for 4 hours. Should be great fun. Might go out for lunch to a café.
That evening there is a special Brighton tradition for the solstice called "Burning the Clocks". I hope we might get to that, weather permitting, if I've done enough preparation for our "Christmas with the kids" the following day. You can see photos of the event online. Around 20,000 people attend.
Much love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx0
