Vicki - It is overwhelming reading about what's going on in your world right now. You are made of strong stuff to keep all of those plates spinning. I am crossing fingers things slow down for you in 2019 - employees/ staffing leveled out, DD on a good path, everyone in good health for a while.
Allie - 2019 will be a great year for you. I think you hit about the highest on the stress level chart in 2018.
Yvonne - hope you are feeling better!!
Michele - I know you have company so your house is a whirlwind right now. Did Denise and Pete ever get their own place?
Rebecca - I'm glad your oldest son will be around for the Christmas holiday. You are doing great hitting the gym!! It's always neat to realize that boom, it's paying off, it's often so incremental. Muscle burns more calories even when we aren't doing anything, that's what my doc says.
OK, went to my Physical Therapist appointment this morning. Diagnosis = frozen shoulder. Treatment - stretch the arm this way and that way, 2 or 3 sets, 8 or 10 reps, 3 times a day, 5 days a week. Scream and cuss if need be while doing the stretches. Then put a big ice pack on it for 20 minutes. By golly, it feels better already, lol. Good news is that it will only take months to a year to be all better. Other good news is -- I can keep up with the weight training on both arms, won't do any damage. That's what I needed to hear.
Heather - I liked Lisa's thought about moving the deposit.... keep moving it and maybe you can actually be in a position to apply it!
Lisa - great idea pursuing MBA in Accounting! Why not? Keep your options open. I have a retired friend with an MBA in HR, and he actually teaches online classes. Another avenue for retirement income a person can do from home.
NY Karen - great plan hitting the gym in the morning during this busy week. You are doing a great job keeping on top the Christmas goodies. That 5k in DC in April sounds like fun! 2 miles on the treadmill this morning....awesome!
Machka - understandable that your goals got messed up in 2018. I am impressed at all the ideas for the 2019 "words".
Janetr - hope things went well at the eyedoc for you. Fun to have the "big pants" around to see how far you've come!
Pip - HUGS dear girl... I think Lenny became an angel and steered Kirby your way.
Karen in VA - what a neat setup with your generator! We had the option of getting a generator that would have tied into a large propane tank we had at the time, but we let that go when we got the woodstove which replaced the propane insert. Fuel storage for generators is a concern....storing gallons and of gasoline isn't always a good idea and we don't have natural gas lines out here in the boonies. Those rooftop solar collectors are neat. I guess some folks are making them work here in the Pacific Northwest, they are getting better and better. We have a great southern exposure here- the Tesla sounds interesting.
Cari - yes, go get a pair of your big pants back! And thanks for mentioning the Tesla solar roof panels, I'm going to check those out for sure.
Barbie - the list of 19 for 2019 is a wonderful idea! I am stealing it!! I like the word "Pause" ... it's the pause that refreshes, right? Or is that Pepsi, lol.
Stopped at the local family-run appliance store and bought the Speed Queen washer/dryer set. I think it will do just fine and should be able to wash just about everything that needs to be washed. Anything super large and puffy I'll drag to the Laundromat and stick in one of their washers with the Volkswagen size drum, and that's only every few months if that.
What I really liked about the local appliance store was the salesman there is also the repairman! I did stop by Home Depot just to see what they had on the floor. Holy smokes some of those tubs were HUGE in some models. Great for large families tho.
Yes, big rain coming tonight and tomorrow. Katla, I think it will hit you first before it heads up our way. Weatherman doesn't think it will reach flood stage.
Better close - stay warm and dry, ladies!!

Machka - you've been inspirational for me. I just put in an application to an online university here to see about getting my Master's degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting. Don't know what will come of it, will have to sit down with my husband to look at the overall cost. Also checking with the Veteran's Administration to see if there's any tuition assistance available through them. If I decided to do it, I wouldn't start until March, at the earliest, so there's time to change my mind. Nevertheless, it's worth checking into...
Later, y'all,
Lisa
Go for it!!
BTW - the first two courses of my Master's (one of which I'm currently in) have overlapped with the Business Administration Master's degree, and so did the last course of my Graduate Diploma. My next course will be IT-related again, but I've enjoyed the Business Admin courses.
One of the reasons I decided to go for a Master's Degree is because I figure I've still got a good 16 years of work left, and I might as well get the education that increases my odds of getting into a good position. I don't mind my current job, but would like to move up the ladder a little. Ideally, I'd like to be able to go to 4 days a week but still earn at least what I'm earning now on 5 days a week.
And it has helped keep me somewhat up to date with technology.

Thanks so much, actually I had terrific news at the eye doctor l this morning. The drops I have used six times a day for a week did a great job in drying my eyes. My sight is better and I wont need any surgery at this time. I will continue the eye drops three times daily and check the progress of the macular generation and Fuch's Dystrophy every six months. He did increase the strength of the prescription on my glasses.
Thanks for asking.
Janetr OKC8 -
Janetr: That is good news.
Cari: We got solar panels fitted at the beginning of the summer. Even on a dull day they generate some power, and we feed any excess back into the grid, to offset costs.
Allie: With so much happening in your life in 2018, it's not surprising you suffered some stress eating. 2019 will hopefully be a better year for you.
Lynette: That's good news about your shoulder. The more you keep doing the physio, the more chance of it healing.
Today I had my last Group Christmas celebration, so can now concentrate on prep for Christmas Day, without all the temptations of festive food.
I am thinking ahead on my overall goals for next year, and how to achieve them. Daily goals keep me on track, and I am in a few challenges for accountability. Gotta keep vigilant and focused to succeed.

I think that's great a great idea. You know my daughter's story. she became a single mom of three teenagers, worked full time, went to university full time, earned her BS in four years, a year later earned her Master's degree in accounting and now 18 months later she received her official CPA license. The CPA firm she works for gave her a bonus of right at $6,000 dollars. She will now take over auditing for all of the company's non-profit organizations. She is thrilled.
Oh yes, its a great idea for you as you are so very intelligent and motivated. You are an inspiration for us all

Irish Terry - that's encouraging about your solar panels! I'm guessing you have a climate much like ours here in the Pacific Northwest with 4 months of short, mostly cloudy days. Did your government or power company help pay for them? And are they mounted on your roof and hooked into a shelf of batteries?
I intend to keep up with this physical therapy- I am amazed at how a few visits to them and a sheet of stretches and exercises to perform have really helped me through back and neck problems in the past.

Lisa--Thanks for the tip of Createspace. I never realized there were so many jobs to being a writer, and writing is the easiest. Editing, publishing, and promotion are my trouble spots. As to the pseudonym, I was going to use my maiden and my married name, and drop my first. I want to honor my dad, who wanted to be a writer himself. I think I owe it to my husband to keep my last name, since he's been oh so patient with the writing process, as well as helping pre-read/edit two of my novels.
Lanette and Terri--I love the whole idea of solar, but they don't look all that great, and they're expensive. Some of the incentives are dwindling after next year, I don't think I'll be ready in time to take full advantage. https://www.solar-estimate.org/news/2018-11-06-are-the-tesla-solar-roof-tiles-worth-it
I went to a Chinese buffet tonight for dinner. I overate, but at least I had a light lunch, and my choices were healthy. Seafood and veggies were good, and I skipped the abundant desserts. I was crawling around on the floor, looking through the shelves for Christmas CD's, and realized it didn't kill my knees to be down on all fours. Yep, it's time to start putting some exercise into the plan.
Cari in N. Texas3 -
Janetr, that's great news about your eyes.
Lanette, that's great news about your shoulder.
Once again, the solution to what ails one is doing some simple exercise or treatment regularly every day.
Barbie2 -
Lanette, It is great that your shoulder is improving. You are doing a wonderful job!
It is rainy out there but not crazy. So far the river hasn’t been wild and scarey. It was relatvely low/moderate all day. The rain does appear to be increasing as the evening progresses & we may wake up to deeper water.

To me, when I am in Alberta with my husband and girls New Brunswick is home, but the minute I am in New Brunswick home is in Alberta.
I had a quote saved once for a long time that really summed it up. I can’t remember the exact quote right now but it was basically, if you are fortunate enough to have loved ones in two places you are never truly home again as your heart is always where you aren’t.
My husband understands my need to call NB home it doesn’t lessen my love for him and this home ever.

Just stopping in to say hi. I find this group very hard to respond to on my phone and I have not had use of the computer at home.
I had s terrible sale weekend at the craft fair and decided to sign up for one more to hopefully help out with the last bit I was hoping for before Christmas.
I bought my granddaughter a dolls cradle at the show, it was made at the local prison and given to the Christmas Bureau to sell for their charity, the Bureau was helping 62000 families this year in Edmonton area so my purchase will help someone. Today I borrowed my daughter’s sewing machine and made s bedding set for it.
I have a few more projects to get done and haven’t even started wrapping or baking yet! Thankfully I still have a week!
Thoughts are with all those struggling,

Twas the week before Christmas, and Machka's at work.
Consulting her calendar, and going berserk.
There are medical appointments each day of the week,
And an exam on Friday, a little bleak.
At work, everything is due before Christmas,
While I try to learn the new business.
I work all day, and study all night,
And hope of rest is right out of sight.
So it turns out that the tooth which was fixed last week, is on it's last legs. Dental surgeon recommends having it removed. I have had to book an emergency appointment with my my dentist to get the ball rolling (that's Thursday), and then hopefully I'll go into surgery with my dental surgeon who will remove the tooth in hospital early in the new year. He'd like to do it as early as possible.
What I'm debating about is going for an implant for the tooth that was removed last year about this time. The dental surgeon can remove the one tooth, and put in an implant for the other at the same time if I decide to go that route.
And I'm to see a neurosurgeon about the cyst on my brain. He agrees that it looks benign, but wants to see me about it anyway. I'm being referred, and it will likely happen in January too.
Machka in Oz6 -
Lanette, Irish Terry, & Cari The Garden Atriums at Poquoson, VA are older, so the solar panel set up is not as modern as the ones you are talking about. Many years ago in Nebrasaka, my aunt & uncle built a home with both passive and active solar systems. The passive solar energy was used to heat tiles in a sun room, & the hot tiles transferred heat to water, part of which was circulated under the floors. It worked TOO well - they had to install shades to control how hot the solar "room" became. Even cacti died! Another of my parent's friends built a house with a geothermal heating system. I love sustainable energy forms.2
-
Lisa: I am working on a poetry anthology on Createspace. But choosing what to include is proving difficult.
Lanette: we got a small government grant, and reckoned it was a good investment. We really benefited during the summer as we normally use gas for water heating. Our new system means our gas and electric consumption is way down. The panels are on the roof, but not yet linked into any batteries, as these are very expensive here. Glad to know that your physio is working so well.
Cari: The ones we have look fine, and use the newest technology which charges in daylight. Obviously, one gets more output when it is sunny, but even on a dull day we are generating energy.
Must away and start my Christmas clearout!
Declutter
Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! Is my motto for today.
My clutter may be out of sight, but it hasn't gone away.
Drawers stuffed with garments! Clothes which do not fit,
but my parsimoniousness resists reducing it.
I long to be a minimalist, and weed out all the dross.
All those things I’m clinging to wouldn't be a loss.
Some of them have lain there, undisturbed for years.
Getting rid of those shouldn't bring me tears.
But the habits of my childhood are hard to circumvent.
Nothing was discarded, into store it went.
My mother's voice rings in my head, “You never know the day
when you might need that once again! Don't throw it away!”
My life was full of hand-me-downs. Our finances were tight,
as mother stretched the pennies to mitigate our plight.
I learnt the lesson far too well, and so my clutter grew.
But now I’ve seen the light, and these habits I eschew.
I’m learning a new habit which helps me on my quest.
For 15 minutes every day, I attack my hoard with zest.
I’m whittling it away, with determined jubilation,
and every bag donated brings a little celebration.

Protein shakes make me quite queazy if their protein is milk-based.
I'd like to be able to use them before long bicycle rides, but have discovered that's a very bad idea.

Machka, I'm glad they're paying attention to the issues, and getting them fixed. You're needed, and you need to take care of yourself. Just think, by the time 2019's over, you can be a whole new you.
Terri, Love the poem! After moving as much as I have, and getting rid of 2/3 of my belongings over and over again, if not more, I'm kind of enjoying the cluttering of my current space, honestly. But, after a while, I can't breathe if one more thing goes in the room, and go all minimalist again. Love the idea, too, of putting together your poetry on CreateSpace - and for you, Cari, getting your book online as well. There are a lot of sites out there (including CreateSpace) that will charge you money to edit and format your book correctly, etc., but you can honestly do it all yourself for free. I did. Using Word's title and chapter formatting, as well as sizing your Word pages to the finished size you want the book, you can make it look exactly like you wish. And there are plenty of opportunities to fix it before it goes live.
Off to work at the office this morning, two-hour Christmas party starts at noon, then back to my home office for a Skype meeting at 4:15. So in other words, will accomplish very little today. But, accomplished a lot yesterday, so still aiming at balance, as I have all year.
Off to the showers... second cup of coffee has fully uploaded.
Love y'all,

Well, I didn’t exercise today. Vince said that since Denise and Pete are downstairs, the TV needs to be a bit loud for me to hear it, plus, that’s where the kids are wrapping so that there are probably all sorts of wrapping paper, etc. on the floor. So I’ll probably give up exercise for a few days. I can see it being hard to get back in the swing, but I probably will be able to. Actually, now that I look at my calendar, it looks like Denise is planning to leave tomorrow, so I guess I can get back to exercise Wednesday.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions about making an apple pie. Next time I’m going to make twice as much crust (it’s a crumb crust and one batch doesn’t seem to be enough) and I’ll just pile the apples higher.
On Saturday there was mention of our church having a Christmas dinner and they were looking for people to serve. I was thinking that might be a good thing to do. I ran it by Vince and he said that he was looking forward to having a holiday really quiet. I don’t know why, all the others are quiet, so what’s so special about Christmas? Maybe I’ll call the church and see about serving.
M – you are so right about how things change in an instant and your goals for the next year need to be modified. That’s one of the reasons I don’t set specific goals.
Janetr – will be thinking of you today while you go to the eye md’s
Cari – At Hibachi Grill I love where you can have them grill things. I made up a plate for myself of snap peas, mushrooms, shrimp, crab, onions, sprouts, peppers, I don’t remember everything. The only thing is that I have to make sure to say “no butter” when they grill it. They will do it without the butter, but putting butter on it is their routine. Then when they ask what sauce, I tell them none. I usually get a look, but that’s OK. Problem I find is that I wish the plates were bigger so I could get more veggies. Well, you can always go back for seconds. I honestly can’t remember the last time I used glass ornaments. Well, we’ve had a cat now for about 20 years, so it’s certainly been before then.
Yvonne – get better fast. Happy Birthday to your mom
Well, we had our Christmas last night. There were 13 of us at the table. Pete was helping me clean up and broke one of my crystal water goblets. I didn’t realize there were so many different types of crystal! So I took a picture of it and sent it to Replacements. I’m afraid, knowing my in-laws who I got it from, that it’s one of the more expensive ones. Unfortunately, Colby was working on his computer so he didn’t come for dinner until later. Jess invited our vet and his wife, and of course they talked vet speak. I suspect part of the reason is because he wrote a letter of recommendation for her and last time she was home she didn’t get together with him and this time she’s going to Idaho so she won’t be able to get together with him. Seems there’s something going on at the vet office, he’s no longer there. Wyatt, who is a tech, had drinks with Jess and Colby last night. He told Jess that he’s never seen Dr. Bilhorn (our vet) get angry, yet he and Dr. Pope (who owns the practice) were yelling at each other. I guess we’ll see what happens in the future.
I’m a bit sad…Denise decided to go to the mall and not spend the time with us. Well, that part isn’t new. But she bought an ornament exactly like the one I got her. I was so looking forward to her getting it and being really surprised. Now I’m sad to know that she already has it. Then she had to buy maternity clothes. Something like that couldn’t wait??? While Jess and I were running around making dinner, Denise was just sitting downstairs. Pete actually helped more than Denise! Is that sad, or is that sad? Maybe that’s the way I treated my father.
Lynette – Denise and Pete put a deposit on a townhome and it should be completed by March. I just hope it is. Whenever you are having something built, there are always delays. She’s due in May. If they’re not in the place by May, I’m not sure where I’ll be able to stay. Will probably try to find a B&B. Hopefully, that’ll be cheaper than a hotel. Then again, the townhome may be finished. Denise was saying how they were going to live there for 2 or 3 years, then buy their “forever” home and rent the townhouse for the income. Now, they would never have thought of that. I’m sure that his parents (most likely his mother) are telling them what they’re going to do. In a way, I really wish Pete would get transferred South. Mainly so that they could have their own marriage. Make mistakes while we’re still alive to answer them. Good luck with your washer/dryer. Great news about your shoulder!
Did horrible eating-wise yesterday. Had some wine (which I think I have once/year) and too many desserts. Today I’ll be scaling it back. I think Denise said something about leaving today, but I know that she’s not going to leave without her presents, and we haven’t opened them yet.
Janetr - *doing a happy dance for you*
About solar – we have a GREAT place on the roof of our detached garage for solar panels. But our electricity is so cheap that it just doesn’t make sense to invest in solar. Apple’s data center is near here and it’s all run by solar (well, mostly).
M – adorable poem. Here’s hoping for the best for you for your tooth and the cyst
Well, I’d better post this before I get too far behind.

Cari in TX: It sounds as though you have a great attitude and good plans to help you succeed at improving your health. WTG!!!
Heather: It is good to hear your happiness in every message you post. It sounds like adjusting travel plans will not be too difficult.
Machka: I have goals that please me and always apply to my life. I don’t know whether you will feel pleased with the idea of repeating goals, but I like the system I use. Here are my always goals:
1. Log every bite and swallow.
2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on strength and stamina.
3. Have fun every day.
4. Drink at least 3 glasses of water a day.
5. Monitor sleep. Average 7 or more hours nightly.
6. Avoid alcohol.
JanetOKC: I hope your visit to the doctor provides good news and options.
(((Pip))): The holidays are hard for many people. Sending (((hugs))) your way.
Barbie: The weather here is not nearly as awful as the forecasters predicted. I hope your ferry ride is a comfortable one.
Pip: Our ornaments were collected our trips aboard the boat, homemade fabric ones, and crocheted stars. There are a number of blown glass lighthouses, painted Santa faces on oyster shells, and we haven’t added to the collection in a long time except that last year I crocheted a snowflake. Mine is a humble thing but I’m glad I tried my hand at it. All the other snowflakes came from craft sales. They reimind me of good times and I enjoy seeing them every year.
(((Yvonne))): I hope you feel better soon.
Allie: Recalling happy memories is a good idea, especially at Christmas. I agree with Lisa. Stop beating yourself up. You went through a hell of a marriage and divorce, lost your dad, and have had buckets of stress. Comfort yourself in the knowledge that you did your best and move ahead. Make your own heath a priority. Let MFP set your calorie allowance, log every bite and swallow and count calories. It works. :flowerforyou:
Lanette: It is raining off and on here, but the river level is still low. The creeks flood easily, but the Columbia River is well controlled by the Bonneville Power Administration. Our complex flooded one time while it was nearing completion, twenty-three years ago. The builder nearly went bankrupt, but they redid the homes and sold them one by one. That flood was caused by a mistake at the Bonneville Power Administration. Someone forgot to account for the tides and let too much water out. It worked out really well for us. If it hadn’t been for that flood we wouldn’t have been able to buy this place and we love it here.
Janet OKC: Congratulations on the good news from your eye doctor!
Pip: I love the Charlie Brown and Snoopy shoes!
Our new dishwasher arrived damaged, so we had to send it back for a replacement which means we’re still limping along with our old dishwasher. :grumble: We’re expecting to see dear friends today and are looking forward to it. They’re driving down from NW Washington. I hope the roads are good.
