@amymoreorless When I was researching races for next year, I saw the Stars at Night half. I'd love to hear more about what it was like. From the site it seemed like it was mostly barely lit golf cart trails. The idea of running at night in the middle of nowhere seemed like it could either be pretty fun and unique OR weird and disorienting.
I'm doing my first half next year, so I doubt I would even consider it until the year after. Not sure it seems like a great first or second half marathon for newish runners!6 -

Running after 5 days of minimal to no exercise was a lot less fun than normal. 😑 I did eventually hit my stride, just not until 2 miles in. On a completey unrelated note, my husband installed a pullup bar yesterday and I have discovered I have the upper body strength of a toddler.11 -
Went out for an easy 1.5 mile loop around my neighborhood. It was a beautiful day and it was a shame to waste it!

Did not run yesterday, introduced my son to the second movie in the Harry Potter series. His *ahem*female friend*ahem* is a huge fan, so we have started him seeing the series so he will at least get some of her jokes. I have only actually read the first 3 books myself, so I guess I am finally going to read them all while we are at it.5

7 miles easy with my husband on roads. Could not have had a more perfect day for it. Almost 60 F, barely sunny, light breeze. This is by way of gradually increasing our longer road run to 8 miles, which seems to be a sweet spot for my glucose control, and should leave me within a couple of months of being ready for a half if we decide to do another one, as well as improving our 10k stamina. Nice run, we seem to be very consistent - last week ran 10k in 1:03:03, today the first 10k was 1:03:02.
This was my first longer run in my Saucony Guides, and they seem to not cause me any weird knee or hip pains so far, although my right heel (my right foot is smaller) was wanting to slip. Why do manufacturers make shoes with such wide heels? I read shoe reviews and heel slippage is by far the most common fit complaint. Has there ever been a single person who said, "I like these shoes but the heels were too narrow"?
Saw plenty of hawks, buffalo, deer, and bluebirds, as well as a solitary heron. I think sweetgum balls and pecans were put on this Earth to twist the ankles of runners. Right now the trails are coated with pecans and the roads are coated with gumballs. Our run today was mostly silent, but punctuated with soft cursing at the gumballs. The Guides are not bad when it comes to running on gumballs - they sort of crunch and slide - unlike my Brooks Adrenalines which just hit them and roll like the burglars from Home Alone. It's an ankle workout!

It has been a long weekend. We went to Denton to see our son graduate from UNT. I wasn't sure if I would get a run in this weekend, but I did manage to get 4.61 miles this afternoon after we got home. It was a really good run. Now I have to get ready for work tomorrow. I just told my husband that even though we both took off work Friday and had a 3 day weekend it doesn't seem like we had a weekend at all.

I agree with @Elise4270 that the series just gets better!! My daughter is also a huge fan and finished the series this year. She's already talking about re-reading them!!4 -

I've listened to all the books, i watch the entire series a few times a year. Including this weekend. My shoulder tattoo has the stars from the top of the pages. I have harry potter art waiting to be framed. My extra room will be done in gryffindor colors. I have nox/lumos light switches.

I agree with @Elise4270 The books are awesome, and the movies are very well done.
@PastorVincent Did you know there's a Hogwarts Running Club? They do lots of virtual races with fantastic bling and raise money for charities.

@martaindale It was fun! I went with a friend who won 2 free race entries. They do a lot of giveaways on their Facebook page. I suggest you check that out if you are interested.
The resort is NICE and the after-race stuff was fun. Tacos, hot cocoa, music, a fire pit.... it was a party.
I don’t know how they normally have the course set up but they changed it 2 days before the race this year. One of the trails washed away because of rain and it was under construction. Most of the race went through the golf course. It was super dark and you definitely need a headlamp. The race cut through some trails but they had volunteers with glow sticks directing traffic at those turns. The golf cart path was paved and marked with giant green glow stick looking things every 1/4 mile or so.
I went into the 1/2 knowing I was not going to race it. I wanted to stick with my friend who got me the free race entry. She tried the race a few years ago and dropped to the 10k because she fell. I was worried about leaving her on her own. She does walk / run intervals so walking the trail parts was no big deal. There is a 4 hour cut off time so, if you decide to do the race, you will be okay walking the short dark trail areas. There were lots of people walking those parts with us.
Oh! They have a $300 prize for best costume. Some of the things people ran in were amazing! I will probably do it again next year. It was a fun and no-stress getaway weekend thing.

What I am doing is rereading (well listening while I run) each book, then we rent the movie from streaming and watch it. I am currently re-reading book3, so that will be the next movie.4 -

Switched up my schedule to go to the track today, hopefully long, slow run tomorrow. The dirt track I use was covered in fresh packable snow, so I guessed at where the path was and went more by percieved effort level than a certain pace. I came home and did my other workout stuff and don't feel trashed afterwards, so I either got it just right, or wasn't working hard enough.

I've read the Harry Potter series many times. Last year I listened to them on AudioBook and loved them all over again. I also enjoyed the Clifton Chronicles series by Jeffrey Archer. Recommend that series too - totally different from HP, but a great series.
Busy weekend for me! Daughter arrived back home Sat morning. Fun to have her home through Christmas! She got to see her new little niece (who is already 6 weeks old!) which was fun! I still managed to keep up my streak. Ok, yeah, that's a top priority. Daughter is also obsessed with Harry Potter!

In addition to the very real advantages of any warmup that @PastorVincent cited, there are some nice things about running a course preview of a 5K as your warmup:
1. If you haven't seen the course before, you learn where it is and become comfortable with it.
2. Even if you have run the course, you become familiar with the current course conditions. On my warmup, I found the icy spots on the course. It would be unfortunate to find one of them for the first time with my foot while running at 5K race pace.
3. The warmup can be used to fix the good tangents and any pattern of inclines/declines in my mind. This helps with race management, as I can shave a few seconds off my time running good tangents and knowing where the inclines are helps with managing pace and energy during the race.
4. If running the entire course as a warmup is not practical (e.g., the race is a half marathon), running the last portion of the route is good. This fixes what the last part of the course is like in my mind, so that I can better tell how to expend my energy late in the race. Also, when the idiot spectator says, "You're almost done," I know that I have 1000m left and what that means for race management. I don't know about you, but 1000m left is *NOT* almost done with a 5K for me.
Of course, if you're just running the 5K as an event, for the experience, with no intention of trying to run the fastest race you can, some of this becomes unimportant. But you still might want to know exactly how much of the course is left when the idiot spectator says you're almost done.
All of that makes complete sense, now that you all have explained it to me. Before, I just thought you were crazy. LOL I am still at the "just let me finish this race" point in my running and not going for time, even though I am pretty competitive at heart. I'm sure that will come with time.

did my 1 mile each day or so since my last post
then i did 4.8 yesterday. it felt like 10.
i think part of the problem is i haven't been eating nutritiously. and i did a 10 min mile and the rest were 11 to 11:30 min/mi. That ten in the beginning killed me.
speed demon was tired. old girl was tired. i may have dressed too warm.
hermie the westie mix was adopted.
so grizzly is an only puppy
but now we have dwayne who is some sort of corgi mix from China. and he was a meat trade dog per the info we had. dwayne was VERY grumpy about all of this. but by the end of the night, he was laying on me. he can run with us. i think he might like it. i may take him out for a test run later tonight.grizzly sleeping only like puppies can

Cloudy, breezy, and mid-30s F today. Hip was still a little stiff; it loosened up considerably in the first kilometer, and by the 4th kilometer I was pain free. Still opted for careful as opposed to crazy.6 -

I am going to a Yin yoga class tonight and doing strength training with kettlebells tomorrow morning. I have been seriously slacking on the cross training. It has been MONTHS since I have touched a weight. Someone please yell at me if I make lame excuses when I check in tomorrow.

Yes! More Harry Potter fans! Well, I think it’s more of a Harry Potter obsession for me. I reread the books all the time and do Harry Potter movie marathons every couple of months. My two cats are named Dobby and Malfoy! I went to the wizarding world of Harry Potter at universal studios in Florida a couple of years ago and literally almost died of happiness. I wish they would do a race series the way Disney does because I would be there every year!5

I just finished C25K and my first 5K on Dec 14th. I want to keep up the running so I’m putting them on my calendar for the remainder of the year. I should be able to get 21 more miles in. I loved the accountability of doing it with a friend, but she’s done running for the winter. I don’t want to stop now!!8
