@Elise4270 - I hadn't noticed that @garygse had all odd numbers until you pointed it out. Made me start wondering if we could do all Prime number runs! I may have to think that one through, it could be fun though! Also we could run multiples of PI in March in honor of PI day This is what happens when I don't get to run... my mind wanders into areas it probably should!
Mmm. I like pi(e). I’m down for it. Might remind us come March! I like odd numbers. Pi, 3.14 adds to an even number, but since March is odd, (3), it evens it all out for me
@msarobix Those are screenshots from Garmin put in to a collage app, pic collage. I got lazy.3 -
@AlphaHowls maybe I didn’t wanna know your mileage. You ran more in December than I did all year. But there is some comfort knowing you out ran all of us.
Congratulations you inspirational runner! Gah, I bet your Garmin/device app says “you run farther than 100% of runners” oooh what’s mine say? ..... “77% of other users”. Oh hell ya, I’ll take it I also log “more sleep than 86% of users”.. yup, proof that I am lazy. Oh that’s only female to female comparisons. Eh, das fine.6 -
@Elise427, okay thanks I like how it tracked everything by year. I use the Nike running app, but I don't think it has a break down like that. I created a spreadsheet to track my runs for 2019, so I guess I will have this sort of data this year. but it would be interesting to have the history too. If I get motivated, maybe I will go back and log all my past runs.3

@AlphaHowls I didn't put that many miles on my car this year.8 -
@garygse and @AlphaHowls... WOW!! I don't know what else to say.
I went to a different gym tonight, LA fitness. It's at least 10 times bigger than Anytime Fitness with three different kind of ellipticals but I didn't like any of them. I'm going back to Anytime fitness tomorrow.
I ran 5 minutes on one model before my hip started hurting. Moved to a different model and ran for another 40. Then I took a break and headed over to the weights for upper body pulls, rows and shrugs. My son wasn't with me but he told me what I should do.
Finished up with 30 more minutes on the third model, for a total of 75 minutes, and headed home.
I decided not to try to convert elliptical minutes to walking minutes as it pertains to my December goal. I'm just going to wave my arms and say that I was successful this month in meeting my goal. I'm making great progress this month and that was my ultimate goal anyway.11 -
Wow, @garygse! 3500 miles for the year and 300 for the month (and nearly every month) is amazing.
And wow, wow, wow @AlphaHowls! Those are some incredible stats for total miles and how many HM and marathon distances!
I'm amazed that you both can run so many days and so much mileage each day, and stay healthy (and have time - although I am not jealous of those middle of the night runs). Kudos to you both.
@Elise4270 - I hadn't realized I could see that type of display in the Garmin connect app. Nice! I don't think you should feel like those numbers are pathetic at all. Especially given two major surgeries in there. I hope 2019 is very kind to you and your running!
Excellent improvement @Scott6255 - that's a real jump in miles! So excited for your marathon in a few weeks.

I will finish the numbers on Monday but short summary:
2018: 1418 miles (so far, will add a few more)
2017: 1191 miles
2016: 935 miles
2015: 98 miles + ? (Started running in September, only have data recorded for Nov and Dec)

@amymoreorless and @msarobix, I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I think the boredom is part of it, although I was watching a football game (FL/Michigan in the Peach Bowl) today, which helped a little, I think, but, yes, my knees and ankles HURT, too. And the level of effort feels more intense - I think because the treadmill forces me to run at a steady pace, whereas I'm all over the place when I run outdoors.5
-
@katharmonic Thanks! You have steadily made progress through the years! The graph can be found under INSIGHTS on Garmin.1
-
@alphahowls - WOW! There are no words... just WOW!
@Elise4270 - I will remind us in March!
Here is my summary for the year and year to year comparison. The couple of miles I run on Monday will have no significant impact. I really thought this year would be my lowest by a big margin and was surprised it was as high as it is falling just below 2014 when I had limited running due to PF.
I always find it interesting to look at the miles comparing months year to year and am surprised at what I have done even when I felt I was not productive at all.6 -
Feb ‘15 is when I joined the running group. Not ‘14 as I marked in the progress. Wow. See there! On my own I ran 100 miles for the year (I was cycling the 3 years before) and the following year ran more than 700.4

8km just as a weather bomb was starting to move in. Leaving me 52km short of my goal for December. Got to the start a little late so all the other runners were already out, tried following footsteps but lost them at a corner and did my best guess just to get to the next 2 corners and see no footsteps so I knew that I had guessed wrong. Turned and went over to the alternate route and there they were coming back up a hill straight into the wind - kept going to get a few more k's in then turned back into the wind and struggled back to the coffee shop for post run analysis. Actually spent more time trying to figure out where to run to stay hidden from the worst of the wind than actually running. Tomorrow promises to be even more interesting.
If you notice we go from -28C evening low to +3C over a few days. 31C difference Parkas one day - t-shirt and shorts the next. Which is why it's so easy to spot the Canadians on holiday.

So glad your kids tried it out!! I'm sure you will have fun if you give it a try next time. I went today and got a workout in. It really is so much fun!!1 -

That's my last run for the year! I can't figure out how to see my year's total right now but I looked at it earlier today and it was about 950 miles (including warm up walks), which is 950 more than I ran in any year before 2017.
Ran the Buffaglo 5k Fun Run through the Starry Nights light display at Shelby Farms tonight. We did this race last year and it was cold. 18 degrees F. This year we came prepared, plus the weather stayed just above freezing. Much better.
I love this race, but seriously the organizers have no clue. Or maybe the venue has no clue. Either way someone needs to beg borrow or steal a few clues, because some much needed clues have gone missing. My first hint that something might be amiss came a couple of weeks ago when I asked the information desk at the visitors' center if the Christmas village would still be open at the time of the race, and no one at the information desk even knew there was a race scheduled and it wasn't on their information site. The groundskeeper happened to be standing there and said, "Oh, yeah, the race, on the 29th, I know about that, no idea about the village. Maybe!"
So tonight we picked up our packet, (noting that the Christmas village was in the process of being taken down) used the facilities in the visitors' center and shuffled out to the finish line at the last minute hoping not to have to linger in the cold for too long before the start, and the announcer says, Um... y'all... hate to tell you but there's a delay. Apparently no one informed the lighting crew that there was an event today and they already started cutting power to the displays and taking them down, and we can't let you run without them because not only did you pay to run through the pretty lights but it's dark out there and would not be safe without the lights, so... they are supposedly working to reconnect the power.
So there you have five hundred assorted men, women, dogs, and small children in the chilly wind at the starting line saying "Do what now?" To give him credit the announcer rose to the occasion and prevented a mutiny, by organizing line dancing. I wish I had gotten footage of the whole starting line doing the Cupid Shuffle and YMCA. Even my husband who does not dance danced, because the alternative was standing there shivering, and also you sort of have to dance when five hundred people are all Cha Cha sliding around you unless you want to be flat. They did get the power on after about half an hour, and off we went through the pretty lights.
And the lights were pretty! Although my favorite part of this race is actually the unlighted part, towards the end of the race, a long stretch of lonely open road that runs past the stables, lit by nothing but the open sky. I don't get to run at night very often, and by the last mile the crowd has thinned out enough that it's dark and still and beautiful.
This course is hilly - in fact it's mostly the same path we run when we want to do hillwork - and although we started off in about the middle of the pack, more and more runners unfamiliar with the terrain started taking walk breaks, until at the end we were almost alone. We ran it pretty easy, about 10 minute pace, and their idea of 5k seems to have been about 3.4 miles - according to the website it was supposed to be less than 5k, only 3 miles - the discrepancy didn't surprise us, since their 4k last year was 3.2 miles. Last year we were new enough to running - 5k was our longest run before that date - that having to run that extra tenth felt almost impossible. This year we were laughing and wondering out loud how many miles the course was going to end up being. When our gps called the second mile I said out loud, "I'm pretty sure if we flew back as the raven flies from here it would be well over a mile," and another runner, running silent and unseen next to us in the darkness, laughed out loud.
Waiting at the finish line was a fire pit and a hot chocolate stand. The fire pit is a new and welcome innovation. The hot chocolate was also a feature last year, and last year it made me sad, because I can't manage hot chocolate with my glucose levels and they have no other drinks. So this year I came prepared, with a thermos full of diabetic friendly hot mocha latte made with cacao powder and cinnamon, to the tune of about 60 calories and 8 g carbs. Haha!
After our drinks we headed out to our favorite Syrian sandwich place where the owner used us to test his latest kitchen experiment, Lahma bi-'ajin, which is highly spiced meat wrapped in flatbread. He's not yet satisfied with the flatbread but we thought it was delicious. We went back out for a cool down walk and to take a photo of the lights - just us and the sweep truck!12 -
@rheddmobile that sounds like a really fun little run! Or it should be - can't believe the lax organization of it. I wish they would do a race here under the lights on the lake display. They used to have a late night time people could run through (like 11 pm) right before it closed for the season but they stopped doing that. Great job on your 950 miles!1

December Total: 161k
December Goal: 100k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Felt old and slow today, so that's how I ran.8 -
Today's run was the same route as Friday's, done almost a minute faster, even with what felt like more walking breaks. But there was no ice! My original goal was 38 miles for December. I cut that back to 20 miles ... which I still didn't make with only 18.52. But I was able to run twice this week and I'm very happy about that! I'll see how I feel on Tuesday morning before making a decision for January mileage.10

What does "running old" look like? Did you win your age group or pass a bunch of younger runners to make them look bad?8 -

Sometimes, when I feel strong, I imagine my legs to be pistons, driving hard up and down in the cylinder.
Sometimes, when I feel fast, I imagine my legs to be locomotive drive wheels, driving along the tracks with all that momentum behind them.
Today, I imagined my legs to be two over boiled strands of spaghetti, lying limply on the plate.
That's what running old feels like.8
