Nominal December mileage goal: 160 miles
Real Goals: Recover from the strained hamstring. Work back to running faster only as the hamstring allows. Run Freezeroo #1 as allowed by my physical condition on race day, with a blind eye toward age group standings. Have a solid base of 40 miles per week by the end of December to start Boston training.
Today's notes – Last paced run of the year, and of the current training program session. No one showed up needing a pace of 8:30 or 8:00, so I ended up running solo. This is both good and bad. The bad part is, no company and no pacees to keep me honest about running slow. The good part is, I don't have to take a break after the first loop if I don't need it. The program gave us routes of 6 + 3 miles for 9, but I needed 12. No problem, I can find 3 miles after I run the assigned 9 pretty easily.
Temp started at 39° F (4° C), and gradually dropped as I ran. West wind at 17 mph was noticeable, but not much of a problem. Forecast called for a chance of precipitation after 8 AM. The run started at 7:30, and sure enough at 8 I noticed snow flurries that became more pronounced over the rest of the run. They were actually quite pleasant, as the weather was in that sweet spot where it's cold enough to have snow instead of rain, but warm enough that the snow didn't stick on the asphalt.
Ended up with a very pleasant 12 mile run, bringing it in at an average pace of 7:47 per mile in spite of trying to slow down every time I noticed myself running marathon pace or faster. HR data says I didn't work too awfully hard, so I'll take it.

I pretty sure that’s going to be my last run of 2018. I had lead legs and the wind was icy ❄️ and crazy kicking my butt.
On the plus side, I listened to a really great audiobook. I used to think I was not an audiobook person. I couldn’t get into them and like print fiction books more. However, I recently tried listening to non-fiction in audio and I am really enjoying it. This morning I was listening to “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” - excellent and fascinating stuff. Are any of you nonfiction audio listeners? Suggestions?

Today's run took me over 3,500 miles for the year, which is 500 over my original goal. It amazes me when I stop and think about it, given I started the year out nursing the recovery of the stress fracture in my shin.
I'll probably put in a few more miles on Monday, but only because I want that Garmin "Finish Strong" badge...I'm a sucker for gamification.

I took my first running steps on October 21, 2018. I ran my first mile nonstop on December 2. I’m regularly running 2 miles now but had another first today. I did my one hour boot camp class at the gym with my husband at 9:30 am. I decided to run home. We live 2 miles from the gym. I ended up walking a small part where it’s all uphill but I still did it! I was able to run after getting my butt kicked for an hour!!! That’s something I never would have thought possible three months ago.21

4.5 miles on the treadmill today. I don't know what it is, but I find it SO MUCH harder to run on the treadmill than outdoors. I was struggling so badly today that I seriously considered quitting at about 3 miles. Instead, I started doing walk/jog intervals. Once I got to almost 4 miles, I suddenly felt much better and was able to finish strong. Overall pace was around 12:38. At least I was slower! Ugh.
35.0/38.0 miles for December so far - hope to finish out with 3 miles on New Year's Eve to earn my chicken wing calories!12 -
Goals for December: 200 km (125 miles) of biking and 30 km (18.5 miles) of running.
12/04: bike 30 km (18.5 miles)
12/05: bike 20 km (12 miles) + run 6 km (3.6 miles) in 37 mins
12/06: bike 30 km (18.5 miles)
12/07: bike 30 km (18.5 miles)
12/11: bike 30 km (18.5 miles) + run 4 km (2.4 miles) in ca. 30 mins
12/12: bike 30 km (18.5 miles) (very very careful, as it was close to 32°F)
12/15: run 5 km (2.9 miles) in ca. 30 mins
12/18: bike 30 km (18.5 miles)
12/19: bike 14 km (9 miles) + run 6 km (3.6 miles) in 38 mins
12/20: bike 6 km (3.5 miles)
12/21: bike 24 km (14 miles)
12/24: run 6.4 km (4 miles)
12/26: walk, about 4 km + ice skating, for about 1,5 hrs
(mostly helping my boy, but every now and then doing a few quick rounds myself )
12/28: bike, 28 km (18 miles)
Total so far: 272 km (167 miles) of biking and 31.5 km (19 miles) of running. I was realistic and feel like I've accomplished quite a bit. Now it's time for New Year's resolutions 😀.

I ran today! I ran today! YAY!!!
It wasn't long or all running but it was a run! 2.84 miles with an overall pace of 13:29.
Foot feels good so far.
So... my miles for December are 5.62 including my short walks...25 -

Yay @shanaber! You ran! Hope this will lead to a great running year for you, even if it starts slowly.3 -
Yeh, now I am refusing to shake hands with people who have gloves on...
I just carry tissue...lol
@eleanorhawkins Sorry you can't run ! I wish you a speedy recovery *hugs*
--
I didn't follow my training plan since a week now. Traveling plus holidays... I still got in a couple runs, together with my sister (who started running again this year, but is usually happy with 5-8km). Once I dropped her off at home with the excuse of "leaving her time to shower first" and added enough distance to make it to 10km, but all other runs where shorter. But it's nice to have the opportunity to run with her. I'll treat this as a recovery week and try to do a longer run on Jan 2 when I'm back home. (not only for training, burning a couple calories after all the holiday food wouldn't hurt )
For now I'm at 142.7 km for December; still a chance to reach my 150km goal.
But already snuck a peak at my Strava 2018 video anyway: Less running and cycling than 2017 Oh well, I know I did a lot more strength training and other things, like skiing and climbing, but those are not as easy to track and compare with Strava.

@greyparks206 I find running in a treadmill extremely boring and demotivating. It’s not fun for me so I tend to skip runs rather than go to the gym and hop on the treadmill. Maybe if I had one at home in front of the TV? I would much rather run outside. Running on the treadmill also hurts my knees for some reason?

@shanaber Hooray for healthy feet! I am so glad you were able to run without pain!
Be careful about pushing yourself. The one thing peroneal tendinitis of my left foot taught me - listen to your body. I now use my left foot as a gauge. It sends me tweaking pain reminders when I start doing too much.6 -
@garygse Congratulations on 3500 miles for the year! Or should I say “Cheers” since you ain’t no Texan? ETA do you just love all the odd numbers in your mileage? Only even is zero and it’s and odd value of nothing. Are you running tomorrow? Will you keep it odd?
I wanna know what @AlphaHowls made for the year?
Score for @shanaber on her return to running before 2019!
I was not going to look back at the last few years of running mileage, but now I feel I have too.
How did everyone fair this year? Recap the good, bad, bloody and ugly?

29—4.10 it was cold. I wore my smartwool, buff and gloves. It was only low 30’s (0C. I’m so embarrassed. Really pulled up the calculator to do the conversions and wondered how I was doing to get no zero after 32-32. My brain must be mush. The other day I wanted kombucha and was puzzled as to why it said “tea”. I should probably worry about losing my mental capacities ). Anyway.... it was a dang cold 32/0, bit off freezing rain at the end.
I did it. It was awesome. Then DH made me go to Walmart with him for eeveeerythiiiiing and there were too many people and I was hungry.

Here’s a quick look at my last 5 years. Still so pathetic, 5 years? Ugh.... here’s to 2019!
6 -
13 miles this afternoon. 37°F with 13mph wind is not my favorite running conditions. It felt hard. This is the end of my cutback week and I don't feel rested.
Yay @shanaber is running again!
So freaking awesome @garygse on 3500 miles for the year! Yeah, I would like to know what @AlphaHowls ends 2018 with.
How did everyone fair this year?
Well I will end the year just shy of 1200 miles. In all my previous (6) years of running the most was 780. And will run my first full marathon in a few weeks. So this year was a big improvement.10 -
@Elise4270 - I hadn't noticed that @garygse had all odd numbers until you pointed it out. Made me start wondering if we could do all Prime number runs! I may have to think that one through, it could be fun though! Also we could run multiples of PI in March in honor of PI day This is what happens when I don't get to run... my mind wanders into areas it probably should!3
-
@greyparks206 I also feel like the treadmill is a bit harder than running outside. Since I do 90% of my running on the treadmill when I run outside it feels like a breeze an I run so much faster. Why is that, does anyone know? I usually keep my include between 1-2% as well, maybe that makes a difference, because Michigan is mostly FLAT.4
-
I ran again today, even after running on my walk day yesterday. I know I probably need to give my body a rest, but it is so hard to stop running, and I feel so good afterwards. I am going to do my VERY best to just walk for the next two days as rest days from running, because I really feel I should only be running 3 days a week at this point of getting back too it. But really I guess it isn't too bad because I did only run 4 days this week and Friday was a REALLY light run.4

Mmm. I like pi(e). I’m down for it. Might remind us come March! I like odd numbers. Pi, 3.14 adds to an even number, but since March is odd, (3), it evens it all out for me
@msarobix Those are screenshots from Garmin put in to a collage app, pic collage. I got lazy.3 -
@AlphaHowls maybe I didn’t wanna know your mileage. You ran more in December than I did all year. But there is some comfort knowing you out ran all of us.
Congratulations you inspirational runner! Gah, I bet your Garmin/device app says “you run farther than 100% of runners” oooh what’s mine say? ..... “77% of other users”. Oh hell ya, I’ll take it I also log “more sleep than 86% of users”.. yup, proof that I am lazy. Oh that’s only female to female comparisons. Eh, das fine.6 -
@Elise427, okay thanks I like how it tracked everything by year. I use the Nike running app, but I don't think it has a break down like that. I created a spreadsheet to track my runs for 2019, so I guess I will have this sort of data this year. but it would be interesting to have the history too. If I get motivated, maybe I will go back and log all my past runs.3

@AlphaHowls I didn't put that many miles on my car this year.8 -
@garygse and @AlphaHowls... WOW!! I don't know what else to say.
I went to a different gym tonight, LA fitness. It's at least 10 times bigger than Anytime Fitness with three different kind of ellipticals but I didn't like any of them. I'm going back to Anytime fitness tomorrow.
I ran 5 minutes on one model before my hip started hurting. Moved to a different model and ran for another 40. Then I took a break and headed over to the weights for upper body pulls, rows and shrugs. My son wasn't with me but he told me what I should do.
Finished up with 30 more minutes on the third model, for a total of 75 minutes, and headed home.
I decided not to try to convert elliptical minutes to walking minutes as it pertains to my December goal. I'm just going to wave my arms and say that I was successful this month in meeting my goal. I'm making great progress this month and that was my ultimate goal anyway.11 -
Wow, @garygse! 3500 miles for the year and 300 for the month (and nearly every month) is amazing.
And wow, wow, wow @AlphaHowls! Those are some incredible stats for total miles and how many HM and marathon distances!
I'm amazed that you both can run so many days and so much mileage each day, and stay healthy (and have time - although I am not jealous of those middle of the night runs). Kudos to you both.
@Elise4270 - I hadn't realized I could see that type of display in the Garmin connect app. Nice! I don't think you should feel like those numbers are pathetic at all. Especially given two major surgeries in there. I hope 2019 is very kind to you and your running!
Excellent improvement @Scott6255 - that's a real jump in miles! So excited for your marathon in a few weeks.
___________________________________________________
I will finish the numbers on Monday but short summary:
2018: 1418 miles (so far, will add a few more)
2017: 1191 miles
2016: 935 miles
2015: 98 miles + ? (Started running in September, only have data recorded for Nov and Dec)
8 -
@amymoreorless and @msarobix, I'm so glad I'm not the only one! I think the boredom is part of it, although I was watching a football game (FL/Michigan in the Peach Bowl) today, which helped a little, I think, but, yes, my knees and ankles HURT, too. And the level of effort feels more intense - I think because the treadmill forces me to run at a steady pace, whereas I'm all over the place when I run outdoors.5
-
@katharmonic Thanks! You have steadily made progress through the years! The graph can be found under INSIGHTS on Garmin.1
-
@alphahowls - WOW! There are no words... just WOW!
@Elise4270 - I will remind us in March!
Here is my summary for the year and year to year comparison. The couple of miles I run on Monday will have no significant impact. I really thought this year would be my lowest by a big margin and was surprised it was as high as it is falling just below 2014 when I had limited running due to PF.
I always find it interesting to look at the miles comparing months year to year and am surprised at what I have done even when I felt I was not productive at all.6 -
Feb ‘15 is when I joined the running group. Not ‘14 as I marked in the progress. Wow. See there! On my own I ran 100 miles for the year (I was cycling the 3 years before) and the following year ran more than 700.4
