Happy Wednesday. I am so confused on my days with all the holidays. Most the offices at the hospita have been closed since the Friday before Christmas. Everyone is back today and trying to catch up.
The last 2 days I have done well with no eating after 7 pm and having at least 12 hours before breakfast. Logging every bite. Baby steps.
Tracie--Sounds like you have made a lot of positive changes. Good Luck with 2019, glad to have you back.
Heather--Thanks for the reminder it all comes down to CICO. and life style changes we can live with.
Kylia--Great news, keeping the prayers coming.
Blessings, Vicki GI NE1 -
I'm in a bit of a hurry, so I'm not going to try to assign individual responses this time. I'm a night owl myself. I'm usually up around 8 am, and go to bed around two am. Some of my most productive hours are between midnight and sunrise. I've always preferred late nights. As a kid, I'd go to bed as ordered, and stay up late reading with a night light. I can manage to capture the morning hours, but only if I get an afternoon siesta.
Last night I forgot my resolution to not go to bed with dishes in the sink, and I was too tired at 3:30 when I went to bed. So I got up and tackled them first thing this morning. My dishes are done, my kitchen is organized, and laundry is going. Tomorrow I'll tackle the Christmas decorations. Part of me wants to leave them up until Epiphany on the 6th, but I don't know what that is so I don't have the religious reason.
I got a new bicycle for Christmas, and it's all assembled and adjusted--but the rain is keeping it-and me-inside. For the cyclists on here, what's the difference between a department store Schwinn, and one that costs much more from a specialty store? I don't know that I'll ever be dedicated enough to invest in one of those. My little beach cruiser is an adorable orange, has a wide seat, upright handlebars, mud guards, and just seven gears. (I never knew what to do with ten to fifteen gears.) It's got a lifetime guarantee, and it's rust-resistant. I'm going to get a bell and a basket for the front--guaranteeing no self-respecting young thief would steal it.
For the runners on here, how do you get started? Have you always been runners, or did you have to work up to it? Any advice for a beginner? I'll be honest, running is something I've never been able to do, even when I was a kid. I joined the track team in fifth grade, but the only thing I was good at was sprinting. I'm too short for the jumps and hurdles, and longer distances left me gasping for air long before the finish line. Everyone in my family smoked--except me--so I think my lungs were poisoned from the beginning. A facebook friend is talking about doing a 5k in March, and I'd like to be able to join in. I doubt I'll be able to run it, but I should be able to manage a brisk walk or slow jog if I get start working up to it now.
Last night I had about 120 calories left, so I got out the leftovers. Cranberry casserole and sweet potato casserole, on a saucer, warmed up in the microwave. I ate the four bites of the cranberry, and four bites of the sweet potato--which was so sweet. I sat down to log before I finished, and discovered what I wanted to ignore--those casseroles were loaded with calories. I scraped the rest into the trash. Yo-yo is a kid's toy, not how I want to live. Skinny me is waiting in August, and I can't pile up sweet potatoes and sugar if I want to meet her.

Good morning.
Back to work today, just for today. We leave for Cancun tomorrow morning at 5:30! We will be gone for a week. I am a little nervous about that -- it seems like a long time to leave the boys alone, but they should be fine. I have arranged for my 12 year old to join a car pool in the mornings to get to school, and my 18 year old will be able to pick him up after school. My 22 year old will be home by about 5 or 6 each evening, so it should all be good.
For the new folks, and since we're beginning a new year, I am 58, married, with three boys -- all of whom live with us. I am 5'3" and my body gravitates to 140 pounds, which is super annoying because that is a little too heavy for my frame -- well, about 20 pounds too heavy. I went through a pretty terrible work experience a couple years ago and found myself at 170. (Yikes!!) So I got serious and got down to 130 at thanksgiving 2017. But my sister passed away unexpectedly, and now I'm back up to 140. Those who have been around know that I have been struggling a lot with why her death bothered me so much. (She was institutionalized with schizophrenia, and we did not see her often.) I was reflecting on it again a couple nights ago, and I remember that one of the cardio workouts I did before she died was an exercise dance class. I went to it a couple weeks after her death, and tried to dance, but I just couldn't. I literally just stopped and stood there. I went ahead and finished that class, but I think I have only been back a couple times in the past year. I have found other things to do for exercise, but dancing just hasn't seemed appropriate (and was probably my highest calorie burn since it was 60 minutes of pretty high impact/intensive aerobics). I have a weakness for all potato chips, and I am fairly certain that has caused my 10 pound weight gain this past year (well, that and not dancing). I do yoga, a pilates kind of thing, walk/run (started throwing running intervals back in at Christmas time), and some light weight lifting. I used to do triathlon (swim, bike, run) and long distance (15 miles max) trail running, but I developed celiac disease and my most severe symptom was/is arthritis, so I could no longer take the stress of running.
My mother completed her nuclear stress test successfully. As it turns out, she did the chemical stress test as well, so she was there nearly 5 hours. Her friend wasn't able to drive her, so I felt horrible that she had to drive herself. (She is 78 and prone to sudden severe weakness, fatigue, and faintness/dizziness.) She really should not be driving at all, let alone for 30-40 minutes on the highway. But she made it there and back. Fortunately, she had one of her episodes while she was at the doctor -- the first time ever -- and they were able to monitor her blood pressure, which was precipitously low. They've just had her word that these episodes happen -- every time they check her blood pressure it is either perfect or a little high. When it has been on the low side, they just say, "Well, at least it's not too high!" They haven't been able to understand how low and disabling it is, never mind embarrassing. (She hates to cause a fuss and it has happened in public when she's with her friends.) Anyway, they kept her until her blood pressure recovered and then released her. I really hope they can find something to help her.
I think I've posted a picture of our dog before; he's a dachshund/Australian shepherd mix -- about 8 years old. Over the past couple weeks, we have all noticed that he is limping. His back left leg seems to be bothering him. We are worried that he has either developed arthritis or hip dysplasia. He has very short legs, like a dachshund, but his body is even longer -- because of the shepherd, I guess. We are going to keep an eye on him, but we all had a bit of a sad day yesterday talking about it. He has a good attitude, but he has never liked being picked up, and his limp is very noticeable.
I haven't set any real goals for this year, but I would like to lose the ten pounds that I gained back, so a pound a month average is probably reasonable and achievable for me.
I better get back to work -- enjoying reading all of your goals and plans for the new year.
Thankful for Abby's good outcome.

Today is National Science Fiction Day!
I had to do this one because I've been an SF fan since my college days. "The date of January 2 was chosen for National Science Fiction Day as it corresponds with the birth date of famed science fiction writer Isaac Asimov. Considered a master of hard science fiction, Asimov, along with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, was considered one of the “Big Three” science-fiction writers during his lifetime. The Foundation Series is regarded as Asimov’s most outstanding piece. His other major series are the Galactic Empire Series and the Robot Series."
Michele - You ladies who don't do anesthetic at the dentist are bad*kitten*s as far as I'm concerned. I want anesthetic for any procedure that involves drilling, and gas for anything more complicated than that! My exposure to modern dentistry came rather late - as a child we all saw the dentist who had been my dad's family dentist for many years. None of us realized just how far dentistry had advanced until Dr. Stewart retired. As a result, I'm a pretty good patient but I am the farthest possible thing from relaxed when I'm in the chair.
Machka - You are both in my thoughts. I can only imagine how hard the uncertainty must be. There's an ad running locally lately where a disabled veteran with TBI says something to the effect that the doctors say he's reached his plateau but "I don't think I have a plateau." For some reason that sticks with me.
Kelly - One reason I've been reluctant to start household projects is that "pulling the thread" factor. In a house as old as ours, even the simplest job on the surface can open up a larger can of worms that have to be dealt with.
Carol - Our family burns a bayberry candle on New Year's Eve and makes Hoppin' John (black-eyed peas and collards) for New Year's Day.
Cheri - I had a little trouble with that 60-year milestone too. Doesn't seem possible!
Margaret - Those flowers are so lovely. Thank you for sharing your photos.
Cari - I wonder if those traits you described for Vader are part of the chow package. Luna is also a chow mix, and she is suspicious of anything or anyone new. Barks like crazy but is very very cautious about approaching anyone. Not so much the rest of it, though... she is good on leash and very smart. I have to pay close attention when we take her places with us because she's cute and fluffy and has a bad habit of wagging her tail and looking friendly, then snapping when someone reaches down to pet her. It's just a warning - she's never connected - but it's not acceptable. I don't want to force her to interact with people she's not comfortable with, but I do wish we could break her of the snapping. I just watch very carefully and head people off when they look like they might try to interact with her.
Kylia - What wonderful news about Aubrey! Glad she is doing well and that her mom and dad could have a little break.
Lisa - The drafting table is fabulous, and it'll be good for all kinds of projects besides painting!
dauchsmom - Welcome! Are you familiar with the Square Meals cookbook (Jane & Michael Stern)? Its focus is American food from the 1920s to the 1950s, and it's a fun read.
Yikes! I found the new January link belatedly so I posted to December yesterday. So what I sat down today I was already seven pages behind. Apparently I'm just going to be a little behind and backwards all day. It's been pouring rain all day so I grabbed my umbrella and took a half hour off to pick up some groceries. When I got back I was starving and it was nearly 2 so I made a plate of raw veggies and hummus for a snack. Halfway through that, I realized the reason I was starving was that I thought about lunch before shopping but then got distracted and didn't eat any. So I guess I'll have my afternoon snack now and my lunch later...
Noom is going OK. I've lost some weight already, but it is likely mostly water weight from not keeping up my water intake over the holidays. The program spends a lot of time talking about the psychology of eating and weight loss, so I'm hoping it's going to help me break through the mental wall I've been beating my head against the past few months.
I've been walking Luna every day but it doesn't look like the rain is going to let up so this evening I'm thinking about wandering over to the gym to see what this week's workout is. They post a new challenge every week.
Hope you are all staying warm and dry.

Well grocery shopping went well! Estimated $131, and counted it at $125, and at the check out it was $115. I always actual it up, example if its $1.20, I put the item at $2. That way I always win the game!
Some things I bought:
-big "coffin sized plastic container" of baby spinach
-bokchoy
-1/2 a head of cabbage
-Individual containers of avocado
-hearty rice
-grapefruit segments
-Kashi chocolate hearty cookies
-cottage cheese
-two lean steaks that I cut up into 4 portions (about 2 oz per portion).
-individual cans of white albacore tuna
All amazing stuff!
I shall eat like a queen, a queen that has her act together! Yeah!
Came home and had a small bag of almonds. Feeling good!

Hi everyone, I introduced myself quickly last week and I am usually a listener type of partipcant. I am back on MFP after deleting my initial account a while back. Without getting into detail, life threw a few curve balls and I let my emotional eating get the best of me. My BP and cholesterol numbers are up and since I don’t want to take meds unless I absolutely have to, I will make dietary changes.
The biggest challenge I guess will be getting into a new routine. After being semi retired for two years, I am going back to school part time (political science and German classes) and starting a new part time job next week. I plan on going to the gym around 5:00 am three times a week and going running 3-4 times a week as well. That said, I am giving myself permission this time around to miss a workout and not feel guilty if I need the sleep or to switch my workouts around if my body isn’t feeling it (ie yoga instead of weight training). I will also try intermittent fasting a couple of days a week every few weeks and see how that goes.5 -
Cari - It's a year and a day since I started running. I used the C25k app, produced by the BBC, which starts you off really gently with very short jogs and more walking. I used to think I could never run because my knees, hips and ankles were really shot, but my brother and his wife, who also have bad knees, but run, persuaded me to give it a try and then I heard a BBC broadcast about the app. I decided that I should give it a try and if it didn't work out then there was nothing lost. Now I find jogging easier than walking! I run really slowly in an old lady shuffle. My husband can walk beside me, though I am speeding up a bit.
Walk/run is better than nothing. Just do what you can and increase slowly. The app takes you through a 9 week course. By the end I was running for 30 mins, but it takes me much longer to do 5k. I now run 45.37 at a Parkrun, but for my leisure it's more like 48. I run 5k about 3 times a week. I listen to podcasts and music while I run, or talk to DH if he is with me.
I am now 69 and hope to keep shuffling along for a while yet. I have good trainers and socks. My c**p knee certainly hasn't got worse and in general my joints have improved. Yes, they ache occasionally, but I can do more now than I could 30 years ago.
Once I get started I feel like a clockwork toy that just keeps ticking along. I LOVE the feeling it gives me.
There are some wonderful books out there. RUNNING LIKE A GIRL and YOUR PACE OR MINE were two I started with. Fun reads.
You don't know what you can do until you try. Seven years ago I was an obese, hurting mess. I was out of breath walking 200 yards on the flat. Six and a half years ago I started my new eating lifestyle and began to exercise a little bit. Then I did a bit more. And a bit more. Then I gingerly tried "jogging". I amazed myself. I'm still amazed.
I was old before my time. Now I feel as if I have shed 30 years. Aches and pains? - Yes. Bad days? - Yes. But the joy of propelling myself through time and space? - Priceless.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx8 -
Do changes you know you can do. Just because its January, doesn't mean we should implement every change all at once. The sheer idea of that, can set you into a tailspin. Baby steps. At the end of the day, for me, I wish to feel accomplished, not frustrated. I don't wish to feel guilty at the end of the day. I am worth more than to settle for eating food of not my choosing. I will plan my days so I won't be caught off guard. This is the first year I am not making resolutions. I am just going to not let food control my emotions anymore. That the scale does not hold that much importance. Food is just food, I will not attach emotions to it. Just smart choices. That's my plan anyway.💗,
Rebecca

Penny: I love your outdoor ninja outfit and your grandmother's silkscreen art.
M: Your personal clock seems to work very well for you. I admire your self-awareness and good choices. :flowerforyou: Congratulations on your 40km cycling with DH! It looks like you are getting your life back.
Lisa: Your drafting table looks like it will be perfect for you.
Pip: I don’t have a word for the year, either. There are so many wonderful words, and it is too difficult to choose just one.
Lanette: I don’t run unless being chased by a bad guy. So far that hasn’t happened. I damaged my knee cartilage in a horseback riding lesson several years ago and it isn’t going to get better than it is right now. I have no problems walking, doing yoga, or riding a horse or bike. On a horse, I don’t post, I just let my backside take the pounding. I choose to believe that the pounding strengthens my sit bones and back.
Carol: I have an old recipe book that was passed down to my mom, and then to me. It is called The Household Searchlight Recipe Book, C 1936. The Fish and Wild Game section is quite interesting. The game section includes recipes for Fried Squirrel, Squirrel Stew, rabbit, venison, and things that seem a little more normal like quail, prairie chicken, squab and duck. I’ve never actually cooked anything from this book, but I do enjoy the peek into the past.
Felicia: Seeing cute puppies is a treat. Thank you.
Yvonne: My childhood dentist was a a nightmare, too. I had loads of fillings and was berated for not taking care of my teeth properly. The dentist I went to during college, told me it was not my doing. I had soft teeth in the time before fluoride was put into city water in our area. Fluoride has helped many people including my own children.
Enough 64: Welcome to a great group of supportive women. :flowerforyou:
We took the Christmas decorations down inside our house yesterday but the garage is a disaster zone. All of those boxes have to be hauled up into the garage attic and put into their places. Traditionally I am positioned in the attic and DH uses a pulley to send boxes up to me. He isn’t feeling well today so that project will have to wait. The wreath at our front door will be up for a day or two longer, and then It will go, too.
Katla in Beautiful NW Oregon5 -
Katla, when we had our power outage, we noticed some neighbors on another street have their generator going and their Christmas lights on. Crazy!

Still have decorations up and still have company. Seems like all I do is cook and dishes. My DD helps me but we are not use to eating so much.
I decided my word for 2019 will be NOW. If not now, when? I will be 80 this July and last year was no successful in the weight loss area. So after my visitors leave I will sit down and reflect on what was good and what was not so good.
Great news about baby Audrey, will continue praying for her.
You are all blessings in my life and I am grateful for your friendship.

Further to my night owl comments a little earlier (a few posts above), sleeping in for me is 11:30 am or noon. Yesterday, I crawled out of bed at about 12:20 pm and could have easily slept for another hour or so!
I start thinking about bed around midnight or 12:30 am, and if I get into bed by 1 am, I'm doing well. On the weekends, it is usually 2 am.

Alison, I’m doing KETO at my doctor’s advice. Dietdoctor.com has a lot of videos available. Take the free month then cancel the membership. Lots of good info on LCHF (KETO) diet. I’m aiming for 20 to 50 grams of net carbs a day. I’m not hungry at all on this diet. So good thing there!

Trying KETO and 8/16 fasting to see how I do. Been on it for a couple weeks now and my GERD has gone as well as my constant hunger. I hope to lose 40 pounds this year. That is my year’s goal. My month goal is t o lose 4 pounds this month.
RV Rita8 -
I went to the gym this morning, did 30 minutes on the elliptical and then my class which was total body today. My knees were screaming on the lunges so I only did the upper body move when they hurt. Surprisingly, they were fine for squats and calf raises. It was raining outside so I did a Leslie Sansone video instead for my afternoon workout.
I’m trying a new Trim Healthy Mama sipper today called the Shrinker. It’s oolong tea, almond milk, cinnamon and cayenne pepper. It’s not bad. I like their sippers. They really do curb the soda cravings. I’m not sure the intermittent fasting is going to work for me. If I could do an 8 to 6 window instead of 11 to 8, it would suit me better, but Dave can’t stand having dinner that early. I’ll give it a week and reassess.
My blood type is B+ if anybody cares. Lol.5 -

Barbie: Pizza and Chinese food have loads of salt. I bet that a little extra water will wash it out of your system.
Pip: I just checked my driver’s license and it doesn’t say my blood type. It does say that I am an organ donor. If there is a serious accident they have my permission to use whatever they want. I called my health care provider and they don’t record blood types and didn’t know where I could go to find out what mine is. My driver’s license says that I am an anatomical donor. Evidently they’ll type me when I pass away and they have my permission to use whatever they want. I wish I understood blood types better. :ohwell:
Lanette: We have had our first two frosts of the new year, barely touched yesterday and light frost on the lawn this morning. Our elevation is pretty low, 18 feet above sea level according to my phone.
Cari in Cold, rainy North TX: We enjoy sweet potatoes and they are health food on our list. We generally cook them in the microwave and eat them with a tiny bit of margarine. They don’t need sweet sauces and are a nutritional powerhouse. My Auntie Mimi used to make a sweet potato dish that was full of real butter and added sugar. It was at least one toe over the line into candied yam territory, and possibly well into candy store territory.
Felicia: I hope you’re able to find a good solution for your dog’s back/leg issues. We went through a back injury with our dog last year. It took a long time with loads of medicines, but ultimately they worked and he is doing well now. There may be hope for your dog, too. Leif is very cute. :flowerforyou:
I’m going to a meeting with fellow horse enthusiasts this evening. Something is up with one of our friends, and I’m worried for her. The problem is that I don’t know any details at all. I guess I’ll find out in an hour or so.

I had a donor card from wayyyyyy back from the American Red Cross and it was there and I never knew it.. the only reason I knew what it was, was because of my donating my bone marrow for my sister and one of the things I guess was the matching blood type, so that's when I realized what it was and I never forgot. I'm a donor on my license too, so when I croak my good parts can be divided up. that's assuming I'm not mangled to bits in a bike wreck or something.3 -
