Pet Peeve - logging non 'exercise' exercise

I understand your point completely. I sometimes question why some people are on this when they look great already. Then I come to a realization that it's a mental thing. If it makes em feel like they did something, and helps them continue to keep going; then it's for them. If something as tiny as that is a pet peeve for you, maybe we need to analyze what really matters in life. As the saying goes, "whatever floats your boat!"
So, because I am already a size 2-4, I should not be on here? I am not on here to lose weight and state that in my profile. I am here to maintain and get toned and ripped. In order to get toned and ripped while maintaining my current weight, I need to keep track of my protein and carb intake, to make sure they are high enough, while my overall calories are not in excess.
I totally agree. I've had more than one person ask me why I'm on this website when I've met my goal weight and I look great.
Hold on a second. This is MY FITNESS PAL and NOT MY WEIGHT LOSS PAL. I have other fitness goals that I am trying to achieve (with many different health issues going on), so why can't thinner people be here too? It's ridiculous.
I have to agree - well said.
we all have our own journey - a friend of mine on here, who's truly inspiring and motivating said that today.
everyone is here for different reasons, although we may have all come here for 1 reason - to be healthy, change our lifestyle, etc. we have all accomplished many things and those accomplishments should never be belittled by other people.
just like, never put down people's dreams- for that may be all they have..0 -
Agreed! I don't personally log that kind of stuff either, but it's their choice. Some people do not have time to make it to the gym and and for them, that's their exercise. Have you ever considered individuals who have recently had surgery and that's all the more they can do? Like several others have stated, if it's not affecting you or your weight loss journey, why do you care? Don't look at their information. This is supposed to be a supportive website, not one where people get shot down just because they logged "cleaning" as a form of exercise.0

Thank you, both, B and chevy88grl. I am NOT going to apologize for the fact that I am this size and have been all my life. It does not mean I have always been healthy, because goodness knows I have not. I was just blessed with good genetics. Now that I am here, I am eating better and learning new things every day about myself, my eating and workouts. I am also entertained, which I love.0 -
killagb burned 124 calories doing "Reading an internet cat fight" :drinker:0

I know this may come off rude, and I don't mean it like that, but it drives me crazy when people log things like "cleaning, light effort", or "food preparation" and count that as their daily exercise.
I do realize this stuff burns calories, but it is not the same kind of heart rate exceleration and body challenge that real exercise will give you. To me it feels like grasping at straws just to earn extra calories. Then you see comments underneath congratulating that person for making dinner. I mean don't get me wrong, if I clean my whole house and break a sweat, I'll for sure log that... but if I just mop the floor for 15 min, that doesn't count for me.
OP'S words:
"I know this may come off rude"
You knew what you were doing when you posted this and you may be new to MFP but I hardly think that is an excuse to cry ignorance!
I read through this entire thread and each time you answered to the comments being made revealed to me that you are simply here to stir up trouble and that is your only real interest here. You like to argue and so you opened up on this forum with the express intent to argue and that is defined as a TROLL in most message board sites.
Your opinion is inflammatory and you knew that when you started this thread. To bash and abuse others with your high and mighty attitudes and so called knowledge is unfortunate and diabolical in nature. People are more than happy to support and assist others on this site when there is a valid question or need that is posted, but to post an inflammatory opinion is strictly designed to vent and treat others with disdain due to your already inflated ideas of your knowledge!
I would encourage you to use your knowledge to help people instead of abusing them with that so-called knowledge you are waving around here like a badge! Trainer or not, you do not need to disparage others for how they use this site!
Just my 2 cents worth!0 -
If I have questions about to log cooking, or sweeping. I don't. I also don't do them. If I can't log it, its not getting done by me.0

Bah! I've met my goal, look and feel fantastic if I so say myself. I stay here as well. I said "I come to a realization", meaning "hey, everyone has their own choice. I should be conscience about that and not be judgemental. Who knows what they're going through." If you have been small and skinny your whole life, more power to you. I hope it continues that way and that MFP makes it a supportive enviorment for you. I do love how human nature; always looks for the negative in life. Let's not turn molehills into mountains. Have an awesome week!0 -

If you've ever worked in a professional kitchen, you know that cooking can be hard, physical work.
I'm catering an event this weekend, and will be lugging buckets of ice, carrying 20 pound pans of hot food up and down stairs, and I'm totally counting it!0 -

Hm. It's called maintenance. Do you know the story of every "great looking" person on here? What if for them logging and using MFP's support system is the difference between staying healthy or gaining all the weight back? How do you know that they don't need to log and calculate calories and exercise just like you? As a person who's only 5 pounds from goal weight...I still use the system and benefit very much from my MFP friends, even though I am technically healthy and don't "need" to lose much more weight.
As for the OP...are you jealous that someone might log "cleaning" and lose weight doing it? otherwise...what does it matter what someone else puts as exercise? You don't know someone else's situation...stop judging.0 -

Agreed, I've recevied some really venomous comments from people who have been very rude because they can "see" (from my pictures) that I can't possibly understand where they're coming from so my opinions/advice/ideas/whatnot don't matter. I'm here because I have had success here and not anywhere else, I'm here because it worked for me and is still working for me. Blimey everyone, this is suppose to be a nice supportive site where we say stuff like "way to go". "nice job" and other nice motivational words which spur us on....Let's make love not war and take our aggression out on the treadmill....or the housework...depending on your outlook xx0

Bah, I find that 99% of the time the support here is immeasurable. The fact is that there are so many people on here at any given time that you're going to have a couple of bad apples, good apples having a bad day, or just plain old apples that are misunderstood. (Great, now I want an apple)0 -

Haha - me too...let's all eat apples....that will solve this...and perhaps world peace too!0 -
Any movement at all is considered exercise.0

This conversation came up before and got so nasty they closed the thread. I lost 51 pounds from February to June. I did this by healthy living... watched what I eat and exercise. My job is relatively sedentary, but since it is a large building and I work with several different teams... that is my extra.
I am on maintenance level. I am cognizant of the foods I eat and the exercise I do... I sometimes log other times, I don't. Depends where I fall in the feel good scale when I wake up in the morning. If I am feeling frumpy, than I may log that day... just to make sure I am healthy.
Ok, back to the issue at hand... I personally logged my thorough cleaning day as extra exercise. I usually did not log the whole time, but a portion of it. It did not hurt me to do that, I still maintain a healthy lifestyle and if it was considered cheating on my logs, than it certainly did not hurt my weightloss journey or my mentality now. I clean like that maybe every 2 - 3 weeks... light cleaning, I do every week. I also log playing basketball with my son, walking my dog (which some people do everyday)
Really, It is all a personal thing. People have different justifications for logging what they do. For those people that log the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth, have the same percentage to fail as those that use those extra logs. Not one of us can judge what is right or wrong for another. I hope everyone can find their peace with their own program... because if you want it to succeed... it is a program that is lifelong!0 -
Im an industrial cleaner, massive heavy high powered hoses, constant scrubbing and heavy lifting..anywhere from 4 plus hrs a day.I log it if i so feel like it.Its hard work, bloody hard work.0

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but one of my pet peeves is people that stop in doorways or at the top/bottom of escalators...
Now I'm just waiting for the barrage of people who are going to call me names and explain that there may be a good reason that those people stopped. Perhaps they had a stone in their shoe, or they were tired, or that they had to stop because they're living with a terrible condition that causes them to stop in inconvenient places...
Sorry, but I think this post has dwindled into farce so I thought I'd keep it going to ever more farcical proportions!0 -
This site works for many people of all kinds of weight loss needs. We are to uplift each other & encourage each other to help in our weight loss journeys. Exercise is exercise!! There is no such thing as non exercise!! When you have 100 lbs or more to lose, housework, preparing food or canning is exercise to us! We can not break out at the gym or exercise to Wii, exercise videos etc. as well as sweat at cleaning our homes on the same day. I know I have used these so called non-exercise areas in my exercise for the day & I have lost 33 lbs so far. It works for me, but maybe not for everyone. But I see no reason for that to bother others who have a problem with this, such as yourself, to vent it on this site. Please move on; as you are only stressing yourself out when it is none of your business on how people are exercising to lose there weight. You need to concentrate on your own weight loss journey & if you plan to stay on this MFP site please do so by encouraging others not putting them down!0

Agreed! I have already learned from this one post how to phrase things differently so as to not get everyone's panties in a knot.
But then again, I'm just a mighty, conceited, miserable, know it all troll anyway. I hope I'm at least one of those cute trolls from my childhood with the flourescent colour hair. Might as well rock it!0 -

All I've seen her do is defend herself against people (like you) who are attacking her for stating an OPINION. She vented in a general forum, would you rather she set to flogging others individually as you all have and really risk setting people back on their own journey? No one is forcing you to read or reply to this, she is not forcing anyone to change how they log their activity, she is just simply pointing out that some of the logging practices she's seen are double dipping on the calories earned. Everyone, no matter what their basic activity level, needs to make their meals, no? Just like everyone also needs to maintain their home, correct? So those calories are already factored into their chosen MFP lifestyle. OF COURSE, if you clean for a living or are doing housework above and beyond the typical wipe down and vacuum, feel free to add up those calories but otherwise you are setting yourself up to consume calories that you didn't really earn. If you consume more than your allotted calories too frequently you're not going to make much if any progress. I think at this point it is beating a dead horse that many of you are freely admitting has been dead for a while. Done and done.0 -

get over it and delete them.. oh my god. How old are you exactly? Is there a reason why you need to post a forum online about this? wow. GROW UP. And this is coming from a 19 year old.

Cooking dinner in my house hold takes a lot of work and I deff break a sweat, chopping, cutiing, washing, kneading so on. I make real full course meals, I burn calories. I don't count them as exercise when I am totaling how much I worked out but I do log it especially if it takes more 45 mins.0 -

For sure they do, just like I have free will with mine0
