Well, I did this today. This was my longest run so far. I’m still slow but my pace seems consistent no matter the distance.

Hey all. It's the morning after my run and even though it was just a fun run for charity, I thought I'd do a run report.
This was a walk/run event raising money for blood cancers by the local fire service, so started at my local fire station and finished at the fire station in the next town - though they extended it out a little further to the town hall (about half a km). Remember we are rural towns so only a few hundred people living in each town.
I woke at 4am, and couldn't go back to sleep. At 5 I finally got up and just chilled on the couch, watching trashy TV for a bit. 6 I started to get ready, out the door at 635. The run started at 7, and the start was at the local fire station, only 400m up the road from my place (Nice to have!). Get to the start and there are only around 20 of us! I had hoped they would get more. So the fire engine siren goes off as the start gun and I started running.
I was immediately at the beginning of the pack - everyone else was walking! I kept my pace slow - between 7min/km and 630 min km. I was quickly joined by a young 18 year old guy who paced me for about half a km but I could tell there was no way he would keep that pace, he was breathing way too hard. He dropped off then a work colleague who also runs caught up with me around 3ks and we ended up doing the rest of the run together. There were 2 big hills on the course, at 7km and again about 14km. We decided to walk up the hills and run the rest. We had a blast, chatting away and generally just getting to know each other better. At the 17k mark we decided to walk for a few ks, my hips were starting to protest haha. Then ran the final 2.5 to the finish line. The run was mostly on rural roads so car going past at speed. The lead car was pretty good but I kept wanting him to further ahead, he pretty much stayed only a couple of hundred meters ahead the whole way. It was really disconcerting being at the front haha.
So we lead the whole way, and got to the finish in 2hrs 57min. I was hoping to do it in around 3hrs so really happy with that. Stretched and had a rub down. My hips and calves were really sore. A real reminder of why training and building up to that distance is so important!
At the start, with the fire engine
Happiness cause we finished!
At the finish line
Then a friend and I were going to the next major town so I could buy a new phone - old one having some issues again, only a few months after getting fixed for the same issue. So I spent 3hrs total in the car going too and from town. I got home about 530, had a hot bath, relaxed and played with new phone then crashed.
Hips are still sore, calves feel better but today will be resting, stretching and rolling.
My new hydration pack was awesome! Absolutely loved it and was so glad to have it. Pockets for phones and other bits and pieces, I had an extra bottle with gatorade (thank goodness for that!). No chafing or anything just comfortable. Best $30 spent ever! Oh and shoes were fine. I got the occasional niggle but put that down to road camber more than anything. No pain there now
Awesome work @Avidkeo. Great effort and great result. *Goes off to find small rural event so has a modicum of a chance of having podium finish*3 -

Wait... does that mean you won?
Technically joint first as my friend and I ran across together. So yeah, in a field of about 20 where most people were walking (it was called a walkathon but described as a walk/run) I won.
Actually I did get in about 10 mins ahead of a guy who looks incredibly fit, has the typical runners physique. Didn't expect to be ahead of him16 -

Way to go! And I don't think you should worry about your pace at all. As a fellow "turtle", I'm a firm believer that distance is what really matters!

And maybe tell me something about you, others may not know.[/i]
...goal, just keep moving to try to keep the joints from stiffening up...because (you may not know....)
with the possible exception of @Tramboman, I am the oldest poster on this challenge...
Would you mind sharing how old you are?
WTG @debrakgoogins, That's fantastic!
@Avidkeo WTG! Sounds like you had a great time AND won!!! Beating an 18 year old would be awesome!
@greyparks206 You're doing great!!!! Keep it up!
@amymoreorless Thank you! I finally won something. I guess I never thought of it as graffiti, but I guess it is.

How about a monthly question?
What are your current running goals? Do you have a PR your chasing?
And maybe tell me something about you, others may not know.[/i]
...goal, just keep moving to try to keep the joints from stiffening up...because (you may not know....)
with the possible exception of @Tramboman, I am the oldest poster RUNNER on this challenge....
Oh. I corrected that for ya
You edited the wrong word - you should have changed "oldest." Wisest
my her-o is 88. My new goal is to meet her before she’s 90. In Kona. So, “old” is not a protected status here, as a runner. It is, in fact something to treasure and aspire to. (Because running is continually elusive for me).

W5D1 completed. It has been one week since I last ran. With the historic snowfall over this past week in Seattle it was impossible to not only run outside but even travel anywhere. Now that most of the snow and ice are melted I decided today would be a good day to go out for a run and the rain wasn't go to stop me. I wasn't sure how I would feel on the run considering I hadn't ran in a week, but I decided to start with W5 and give myself the ok to reduce the running intervals if it just didn't feel right. Well, after the first running interval I felt great and I continued to feel great over the next 2 running intervals and even the dog was feeling good.
2/1--W3D3
2/5--W4D1
2/7--W4D2
2/9--W4D3

Congratulations @debrakgoogins! Nice work!
@Avidkeo congrats on your win, too! Woot woot!
Another rest day for me. Technically a cross training day but I overdid calf raises while brushing my teeth the other day oops

@debrakgoogins Great job! And considering it looks like you were running in the slush, that's pretty hardcore.3

It was so icy! Twice I just about went down but caught myself. I’ll be so glad when the snow is gone. We don’t have many sidewalks and the ones we do have are skating rinks so all running is on the road with snow banks. Luckily it’s not tourist season so traffic isn’t bumper to bumper.

Run notes:
Another ~8.5 mile long run this weekend! I felt really great and wanted to go further, but I talked myself in to following my schedule. Don't want to push things too hard and risk yet another injury! This was the same route I ran last weekend, and almost exactly the same average pace (only 1 sec/mile slower this week). My average HR was lower this week though and the run itself felt easier! Plus I didn't get any terrible blisters this time haha. I am looking forward to finally hitting a double-digit long run next weekend though!
Registered races:
- Excalibur 10 Miler (3/17)
- Wintrust Lakefront 5K (4/13)
- Ravenswood Run 5K (4/28)
- Space Coast Half Marathon (12/01)11 -

One of the runners at my last trail race was 81! I looked her up and there is an article on her in our local track club running magazine, about what an amazing person she is to be running at her age - from seven years ago! She teaches water aerobics for seniors.
Oh, and she wasn't last! Her race photo shows her confidently trotting across the finish line.8 -
How about a monthly question?

My current/main running goal right now is to build up mileage without re-re-injuring myself. I've noticed all my sfx have been in even-numbered years (2014, 2016, and two in 2018) so at least that's a good omen for this year
My other big goal for the year is to snag a new 5K PR! And hopefully get under the 21 minute mark, but I'll honestly be happy with even a 1 second PR haha.
Two things about me that others may not know:
1a) I am getting my PhD in Physics in May
1b) I hated physics in high school and freshman year of college
2a) I worked in a fruit fly lab for two years during undergrad. My main job was to sex the flies and isolate virgin females for breeding to maintain our genetic stocks
2b) The media we grew the larvae (aka maggots) on was 75% instant mashed potato mix, and I still to this day cannot eat mashed potatoes
PS- @kristinegift I saw you are in the DC area now. I'll be moving there (Bethesda, MD) in June for a post-doc! As a fellow midwesterner, the mild winters are definitely what I'm looking forward to most I'll have to get some intel from you on the best trails in the area once I move
12 -
@Avidkeo yay that sounds like a real win-win!
Well done to everyone getting out there and doing it this weekend.
We're getting dressed for our little local race. Due to having a foreign name and them employing a monkey to put data into computer, I get to run with a bib that reads "Eleanor Hamtis". Kinda ironic for a vegetarian lol. Haven't even managed to persuade the others to get up yet and I'm itching to get out the door and get down there :-D Not excited much. Silly, as my goal is to come last in my AG ;-)
ETA: hit the button before answering the question(s)
My current running goal is to build back up gently from my injury and make sure I don't overdo it. At Easter, we're walking the final stretch of the Portuguese Camino de Santiago from Tui to Santiago, which is a fair bit of walking, so I need to make sure my legs are fit for that.
Then I hope to run our local HM in November and possibly get a PR on that.
Given my verbal diarrhea I'm not sure if there's much anyone doesn't know about me, but as others have said if you want to know just ask lol10 -
quilteryoyo wrote: »

No, I'm not older, but I'm getting there. I will be turning 60 in August. When I ran 10 years ago, there was an 80 something year old woman who ran every race I entered. She told me she had to stop running marathons when she turned 70. Because of her, my goal is to be able to run a marathon when I turn 80.

I ran before work yesterday, then immediately had to eat and shower and commute, so no time for an update until now, 26 hours later! 6 miles and my legs felt like garbage. I think it's the shoes I'm wearing, which I got for free from a shoe rep and tried to give a fair shake but the sole is just too firm. The last few recovery runs I've done in this particular shoe has made me feel like total trash. These are going to be relegated to the "wear to work" pile, I think.
I need to go out and do a minimum of 6 miles today, and 12 at max. But I was out really late DD'ing some friends so we'll see how much I accomplish I may try to hit a new trail today too since our rainy forecast has given way to sun/clouds instead and it's not unbearably cold out (yet).
February miles:
2/1: 10.5 miles
2/2: 8 miles
2/3: 16.2 miles
2/4: 3.3 miles
