No running over the weekend. Air quality was *kitten* and I spent all Saturday night sitting with drunk S.O. to keep her from drowning in puke, and then all Sunday trying to catch up on sleep. Good times.
Tried to get up at 6am this morning for a run, but decided I needed the extra sleep more. I'll try to run tonight, but as things are at work (I didn't get out of the office until 11pm half last week) I guess I just have to take what I can get.
Re: epic falls. I was tripped by some guy during the first 200 meters of my last 10km race. He was nice enough to pull me up and ask if I was OK before he sprinted off. All during the rest of the race, it seemed that every single runner that pulled past me would try to inform me I was bleeding. (Yes, I know, thank you for your concern.) Helpful bunch we are.9 -
Hmm… Might need to adjust my goals?! Only hitting about 20km a week… unless I do a long run or 2?!
Everyone else in the house has kindly shared their cold with me so my nose is running and I'm coughing my lungs up, just hope it doesn't get any worse!

So myself and a friend have decided to join a 1000km in 2019 challenge now! So I guess given there's 10 months left I'll have to average 100km a month for the rest of the year!
Have decided that I will start training towards a marathon in October! They release more spots in July so I'm thinking I'll just start working towards it and see where I'm at by the end of June. If all is going well I'll sign up!
So, long story short, I'm in for 100km

@Avidkeo regarding myofacial release, yes it a thing, it does help. I've had 2 pt's use it and was always left bruised. But in better shape. They have speciality torture devices for getting those extra special knotted up places. Its a love hate thing.

Afternoon. Been a hectic day for me.
This morning I went for 5.5k easy run, that I actually took easy! My HR never went above 165 I was only just in zone 4, I even spend 10 minutes in zone 3! I felt like I could run for a lot longer, but as I'm easing in after my injury I'm sticking to the 10% rule. Last week I did all 5k runs, this week, I'll do 5.5. Ill throw in a longer run on Wednesday and Friday - 6 and 7, as long as my leg holds out.
Talking about the leg - no, I'm not complaining for a change hahaha - I came across this video of a guy saying "this will solve your shin splints", so I watched, with a firmly skeptical mind. Basically he did a myofascial release, I think. he took an object like a scraper, and scraped the muscle. I thought well I'm trying massage and stretching and its not really improving things. what do I have to lose. So I got some oil, and a cake server (the only scraper like object I owned lol) and tried it. I was almost pain free the next day. so I did it again morning and night. and that's it. pain free. And no pain at all on or after my run today (definitely not my shoes then, thank god) I googled a bit more and found the myofascial release thingy - chiropractors use it apparently. I think its more like a deep tissue massage using an implement rather than hands.
Now I'm a sckeptic. It may be a co-incidence. I was still stretching, rolling and had a couple of days rest. that may have been it. but maybe not. Unsure. Anyone else done anything like this? tried something that looks or sounds unlikely and turned out to maybe be of benefit?
This sounds suspiciously like Gua Sha. I'll look up some info once I find a computer.1 -

First, a question: was there any bruising on your shins? Gua Sha often causes horrible looking bruises on the skin, and when your body fixes it by upping the blood flow to the region, it seems to help fix whatever problems there were.
If not, then it was probably working more like a highly localized foam roll.
I'm not going to go into "cold wind" and acupuncture points here because it will sound like woo-woo. I personally don't do gua sha myself, unless I have no other choice, and then I suspend my disbelief and look for a few days like I got jumped in an alley and was beaten black and blue. This is the first time I've heard it being used for shin splints, although a fellow runner and medical professional I know likes to use acupuncture and whatnot.5 -

@Sparx_81 I tend to go with how I'm feeling, however the last time I did that (10k at the tail end of a cold), I got ill again quite quickly. Could have been coincidence but I've not risked it since!

The weather here has been quite windy so decided to stay on the sofa yesterday and after leaving the house to go to the gym/work in similar conditions I'm glad I did - the walk to the gym ended up being a work out in itself!
However I've got 2 days off at the end of this week giving me a 4 day weekend so my aim is to get outside for a longish run (by my standard) at least twice!2 -
Yesterday was our eldest son's birthday, and his brother's wife's birthday as well. After walking the dogs, my husband and I ran some errands. The kids showed up (early) and stayed late so I did not get out for my scheduled 3 miles, in which I had planned a fast mile. Tomorrow, the plan calls for 3 miles as well so this morning I thought I'd just skip yesterday and move on. Then I saw the forecast calls for 3-6" of snow tonight. Since the roads are currently almost bare, the choice was easy.
It was cold (teens F) but not much wind and I felt really good. Once we got going, having missed my "speed work" yesterday and with no intention of running again tomorrow, I decided to push myself a bit for this run. Consistent splits, fastest mile, 2-mile and 5k!
It. Was. Awesome.

Good weather today, but poor running. No gloves and no wool cap. Didn't seem to have much energy, so I listened to my body and cut the run off at 8.5k. Maybe a delayed reaction to the time change, or a reminder that the third day of three days of running in a row needs to be an easy day.

An old friend hit me up and said she was inspired by all the progress I’ve made over the last year and asked me to be her work out buddy! So today we went out and did week 1 day 1 of c25k. I’d say I did about a mile of running total so that’s what I’m including towards my goal. I can’t believe I inspired somebody to run! I don’t know if she’ll stick with it, but I’m so happy!

Nope no bruising at all. So in all likelihood it mimicked a deep tissue massage. I'm good with that! I was struggling to get that deep with my own hands. Next time I should go see the local massage therapist. Oh actually that's still a good idea lol.
Another easy 5k. I'm really enjoying these easy runs. They feel... Easy haha. Had to keep it short today, taking little man to the vet to get fixed. I think he knows...
And I've finally discovered podcasts. I know, late to the party. So far I have two favourites, 'David Tennent does a podcast with" and "science vs". Recommend your favourite podcast here. I like learning things.7 -
Was planning 90 mins today, it is like 48F out there, but I think I got gluten at the pot luck on Sunday (sometimes the luck of the pot is not good) so might dreadmill later so I can be close to bathroom facilities. Yay.9

Well, I fell behind on just about everything this weekend, including updating y’all on my first real run of the month! I’d been hoping to get a lake run in on Saturday but was concerned about a pending snow-storm (spoiler alert: the storm didn’t show up until late Saturday and was a wet fart).
Around mid-day Friday I’d already decided to take the rest of the day off, the sun was shining, and I just had to get out there. It was beautiful. The trail was still mostly snow-covered, which was a bit of a drag, but it was sunny and beautiful and my butt didn’t even freeze (naturally, the rest of my legs were too warm, but so it goes)! I ended up going to strength class that afternoon and the combo didn’t kill me - if anything, I had a ton of energy in class. The runners’ high is real, for me at least.
The plan was strength today with a run/walk home, but after errands with my mom in the AM I wasn’t up for much except for a nap. That’s going to mean three strength days in a row, so we’ll see if I’m up for it. I say that I shoveled today, but it’s more like I chipped at the ice in front of the house for 20 minutes and managed to get 80% of a clear path before calling it a day because of wrist pain.
Anyhow, I hit three of my four goals last week: 82 minutes of running, three strength classes, and 198 minutes of walking and shoveling and other misc exercise. Once again I’m short on mobility, but so it goes.

Overslept this morning and the receptionist at the Y I usually base my runs out of called me to make sure I was okay. I had finished my run and was getting ready for work at another gym I use from time to time.
Must've really needed that extra 1.5 hours of sleep this morning. Did a sub PR 1 mile, 2 mile and 5k per strava this morning. 70 days on the run.8 -

@AlphaHowls have you ever considered registering for The Last Annual Vol State Road Race? You're a natural and I believe it's in your neck of the woods. It's on my bucket list, that's for sure. I may have mentioned it before, I can't recall.
@workaholic_nurse snow is one of the reasons I moved back to Minnesota from Kansas City. I missed it too much. The only thing I hate about snow is that it has to melt, which it's finally starting to do now and I'll be dealing with slushy runs or the slick ice from the melt>refreeze cycle.

Really great weather (63F 9mph wind 63% humidity). Only right knee started talking to me after mile 2, but only whispering. Started easy at 9:21/mi, negative split all 5 miles, and ended last mile at 8:07/mi. Oddly, knee was totally quiet for the last mile 🤔

Rest day today. When I did my cone touches and walking lunges this morning, my quads informed me that I worked them pretty hard on the hills over the weekend. They're not injured, but it's good that today is a rest day.
Monthly questions . . .
Most embarrassing fall: 2016 Rochester Marathon. I got to a mile from the finish (yes, 25.2 miles in), walking from mile 24 or so because of calf cramps, when both calves cramped up at the same time and I went face down onto the sidewalk. I managed to control it to the extent of landing on my hands and going down gently, but it was really embarrassing to cross the finish line on a golf cart. Finishing the Rochester Marathon is on my bucket list, but not this year. Probably not 2020, either; if all goes well, Chicago will be my fall marathon next year.
Buyer's remorse with gear: Not really. I've bought some stuff that didn't work out, but I haven't spent a huge amount on any one thing that I should have know better than to buy. I learned something from most of the failed purchases, and some were speculative in the first place.
Biggest gear regret is probably the Hoka One One Cliftons. I did a 6 mile run in demos, then won a free pair in the raffle. Wore that pair for 96 miles running, and in hindsight that was a factor in my subsequent quad injury. Now I'm extremely reluctant to try new shoes. Saucony Kinvaras have worked well for me, and they're still being made. But technically, the Hokas weren't a purchase; they were a freebie.
Best gear purchase: Probably my first Garmin, to get a real running watch I could control while running instead of trying to use a phone app. Deciding factors were muffing the start button on the app for a few races, and the app not being flexible enough for interval workouts when I started getting coaching.3 -
My mom, dad, aunt, and I went to IL for my Uncle's funeral. I'm so glad that we got to go to pay our respects to him and to visit with family that we don't get to see very often. We just got back this afternoon. Missed 6 days and over 200 posts, so I'm sure I won't catch up. I'll just give a generic "way to go" to all of those who raced this past weekend, because I know you all did awesome!!!!11

I have felt generally pretty good after my race, a little sore overall but not terrible. After taking yesterday off, I went to run group tonight. It was cold again and it started a pelting snow just about when we started, so that was fun. But it was light out, which was a real treat. It's so much easier to get out for these evening workouts when it's light. The workout was a 20-minute tempo run. I planned to just run it easy and I did, but managed to pick up the pace a little in the second half. Things I didn't realize were so sore made themselves known - like the chest and shoulders especially. When I tried to do sprints, my quads were not having it. But still, not as bad as I might have expected.
I'm on spring break this week, for whatever that's worth (not much). The weather is supposed to warm up towards the end of the week but I have so much work to do that I saved for this week when it's quieter that it doesn't look too promising to get much daytime running in.
