I had a nice 5 mile run this morning. It was a little chillier than I thought it would be, but still really nice at 46F with light wind from the south. The sky was clear and the moon was so pretty. It was really pretty when I started out and there were lots of stars. Then on the way home it was starting to get light in the east and the moon was setting in the west and it was big and orange and I thought about how if I had run later in the day I would have missed seeing that beautiful sight.
@Lazy_Bones_85 I'm so sorry for your loss! Mia was a beautiful cat!
@yvonneangelgoh Welcome to the group! It is never too late to join.
@midwesterner85 Glad you're on the mend!
@MegaMooseEsq I usually keep an eye on the race and register for it just before the price goes up or if there is a deadline to be guaranteed a shirt. All of my races have been small, but if I was worried that the race would fill up I would probably register even sooner, or at least keep an eye on how full it was getting. I do tend to get more anxious about getting injured or something happening once I've paid my money so I put it off for a while if I can.
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17

Saturday's run was a real slog. I chalked it up to a late night out the night before with my son and his girlfriend.
Sunday came, they left to head back to college and it was time for my long run, a planned 20+ miles, on a beautiful, sunny day. Except I couldn't get my but going. My *kitten* was draggin' big time. I was tired just going up the stairs. I gathered up all my gear. It sat on the table for a couple hours. I started negotiating with myself. Maybe I'll wait until evening and go for 10 miles. Maybe I just do 6. Maybe I'll do a long run on Monday.
Finally I realized why I didn't want to go. I was coming down with something. By bedtime I definitely had a cold which felt like it could go into my throat. More feeling crappy yesterday but it wasn't any worse and today I'm feeling slightly better. If I feel this way tonight I'm going to try a 4 or 5 mile run. I won't push it though, because I really need to get my long run in this weekend.
Why does that always seem to happen on the beautiful days? Hope you are feeling better. Remember, rest and recovery > a few extra miles when you really need it!
@Lazy_Bones_85 - That's a great picture. I'm sorry for your loss. Saying goodbye to our furry friends is tough. It looks like she had a great life!2 -
I've had a few races I couldn't run because of injury or schedule changes, so it's a balance of having to pay more for signing up later vs. risking losing out entirely because you can't even go. When I injured my foot in October it took away two big races for me, a 10 mile trail race in Kansas City and an 8 hour race in Wisconsin. That would have been a $110 loss but the KC race director let me transfer my $65 fee to the race I did last month with Kody. That is VERY rare to be able to do that, so I was extremely grateful. FWIW, if I sign up for a race but can't make it, I do collect the shirt or other swag if I can.
Speaking of DNS's....I just realized that a July 10 I signed up for three months ago isn't going to work. It's the same weekend as our 20th annual neighborhood camping trip, and I'm the one who coordinates the camping trip. This particular race didn't mean a lot to me, but it was convenient to where we go sailing and it was only $10, so not a big loss.

Just popping in to say hey! This month has been a whirlwind of ups and downs. I started the month off in a bit of a rut, which usually keeps me from posting much, but I am glad to report that things are looking up. Like many people, the end of Feb/beginning of March is always a struggle for me due to the weather and the lack of sunshine. SAD just zaps me of my energy and makes it tough to concentrate.
My training has been going okay. I have been sticking to the plan of lower than normal mileage, routine strength training and stretching, and my regular Monday evening plyo class. But after a less than stellar 5K in February where I finished over a minute slower than my PR pace, I was really starting to question if I have been doing enough. It was a very cold day and the muscles were tight, but I could just not get it going and I even struggled cardio-wise. Again, probably that mental rut kicking in.
So two weekends ago I had two races, a 5K and a HM, on the schedule and I knew that I needed the mental boost of performing well in both of these races. I ended up with a ONE SECOND PR in the 5K on Saturday and finished 5th female overall. Since I was convinced that my PR days were behind me, I was pretty elated. Sunday's race was a good one too. Not a PR, but this course is pretty tough with around 700ft of elevation and the winds were pretty brutal, especially when crossing two bridges in the final miles. I have run this race many times in the past, and Sunday's run was a PR for the course and I finished first in my age group in a pretty big race. So I was happy.
Until I tried to run on the following Tuesday. The left hamstring was not having any of it. I went out about a mile and a quarter and it wasn't loosening up, so I decided to head back and give it some rest. The PT who teaches my plyo class offered to do a deep tissue massage with the Hypervolt thing on Friday morning and that helped some. With 4 weeks left til Boston, this past weekend was pretty much the training hump that I needed to get over. I decided that I needed a solo 20 miles with no stops. Training with my group is fun and I enjoy the social aspect of it, but I always like to have at least one run where I run at my own comfortable pace and make minimal stops (just at traffic lights or for a quick Gu). I also appreciate the mental challenge of running it alone. I did 10 miles easy on Saturday with the group and then nailed my solo 20 on Sunday. Average pace ended up at 8:37, but my heart rate stayed comfortable in zone 2 until the final 4 miles when I pushed it for marathon pace. For comparison, most of the long runs I have been doing with my group have been in the 9-9:30 range, so again, a bit of a much needed mental boost.
So with that behind me, I am feeling pretty good about how this training has gone. My hamstrings were quite sore after Sunday, so I decide to do dry needling again. I had my first session this morning and my (plyo) PT said the hammies were really, really tight. I feel like the needling helped a lot and I think maybe he has a bit better technique than the first guy that did it on me. It just felt a bit different.
I am not sure what it is about running Boston that seems to put everyone on the injury edge (based on conversations with running friends who are all in the same boat). I am quite sure it's probably mental more than physical, and the timing of the race definitely contributes to that. I keep reminding myself that the last time I ran it I took almost a month off in Feb-March and I maxed out at 16 miles for my long run. My hamstrings were in much worse shape and I still managed a pretty good finish. I really have nothing to prove here, as I am not shooting for a PR, but I really would like to feel like a gave it a solid effort. I think I am ready. Sorry for the blabber...I just needed to get that all out.15 -
So far this month I have done:
3/2/19 2mi
3/4/19 2mi
3/5/19 2mi
3/6/19 1.8mi
3/16/19 1.9mi
3/18/19 2mi
Total=12mi so far out of 25-30
My body decided that it was time to get a cold half way through the month so that really screwed up my program!! I hope I can still make it to 25mi at least. I hope to start running outdoors in the next couple of weeks as it has started to warm up/melting7 -
@elise4270 - will you beep now going thru security at the airport?
@lporter229 - Congratulations on your races! Awesome getting a 5K and a HM course PR and... winning your age group in the HM!
@7lenny7 - I have found another location closer to home to try and see some of the super bloom later this week. I don't think it will be quite as amazing as some of those in the big canyons but we will see. This particular area has lots of trails that I want to run with Hobbes anyway so the visit there will be dual purpose as I can check them out for running while there. I may still try to get out to the original area once all the hype has died down. The bloom should last well into April so we have some time.
ETA - I hope everyone who is getting or has been sick are feeling better soon!4 -
@rusgolden these links are for you. An article...
https://www.outsideonline.com/2339576/rickey-gates-running-every-street-san-francisco
and a video...
https://youtu.be/jy_W5qsjB5U
Ricky Gates, a guy who ran across the US is running every street in San Francisco. There's also a guy who is walking every street in NYC.
I've mentioned it before but I'm not sure if @rusgolden has. We're both in the process of running every single street in our towns. I'm at 94% of my town, I think Rus is around 96%. My initial goal was to run every single road in one calendar year but my foot injury last October got in my way. I'm just about done though. I have just 2 easy runs, one short run to pick up a short chunk of missed road, and 2 runs I'm not sure if I'm going to do at all. They are both on US highways. I don't have enough OCD to force the issue. I'll have to drive it with a run in mind and decide if I can do it. If I do complete my town by March 20th, I will have done it in a 12 month span, not counting the 3 months I couldn't run. I'm now starting to run the two towns on either side of me but this time I'm going to take credit for the runs already done, and I have no self-imposed deadline for finishing. Come sailing season, I'll also work on running all the roads in the town where we keep our boat.
Here's my progress in my town so far:

Wooow @7lenny7 and @rusgolden, that is impressive!!!!0

@Elise4270 You're like Wolverine!
@lporter229 Great racing, congratulations!!

Just a short run for me tonight. I didn't feel like running at all - after a sunny spring weekend, the weather has decided to go back to winter. Which would be fine, but I took the bike to work, and on the way home there was an icy headwind that left me frozen and exhausted at the same time.
Took me an hour to warm up and gather my motivation to go out again. But I'm taking care of a friend's cat while he is out of town, he lives too close to justify taking the car (a bit less than 2km one way), and there was no way I was riding my bike in that icy wind again. So running it was...
There and back, 4km in total. Training plan said 4.8km for today, but training plans are more like suggestions anyway8 -

@lporter229 congrats on your races. Hope your hamstring feels much better. Dry needling is interesting - do you also get electrical stimulation with that?
@7lenny7 thanks - I had remembered you running in KC before and thought that kind of thing might be something you'd do. Sounds like you have some big combos in mind. Also, cool about running all the streets of your town. I remember you or @rusgolden maybe shared the website/app where you can track this before - what is that?
@elise4270 how are you recovering with your enhanced leg?

Another treadmill run before circuit training. I swear I'm getting slower and slower.
Legs and core today featuring box jumps again. Friday I was feeling so good about it and today the same height was messing with my mind. I nailed my shin pretty good on one attempt - even though it's a soft box it left a nice mark. All right, box. Next time.4 -

Hmmm.... I’m not sure if I shared why. tl;dr My femur was derped up and anteverted (37degrees) -rotated forwards. This causes a person to naturally turn the toes inward to align the femur/ acetabulum (hip socket). All this malalignment causes stress on soft tissues, my case the IT band and bursa (sx #2), the hip labrum and knee. Fair chance that without this correction, I’d need a hip replacement and/or a knee replacement at some point. And that won’t get me to Kona. Hehe. Nah, my running days may truly be over, but I won’t trip over my own feet any more, er as often, hopefully . So that’s why I tell you kids with hip pain “see a professional “. You never know what you are up against until you visit someone with imaging.

@katharmonic Recovery is brutal. Surgeon today said don’t panic the pain returns like it was earlier. A good day is 5/10 with narcotics (not very good ones mind you). First 10 days I was fine only when the narcotics knocked me out. Today I made it 12 hours,1834 steps (crutches) at Baylor and a 5 hour car ride before I was in pissed off pain and gave into 1 norco (5), 3 Advil, OJ and a nap.
@_nikkiwolf_ think I’d rather be Jessica Jones, but I’ll take wolverine
@shanaber probably. But there’s the full body scan so... I don’t think it’ll be a problem.
If you notice the bottom screw is bent. It’s meant to be that way. The rod is designed to have a set screw that allows the surgeon to have constant pressure on the two pieces of bone. It’s pulling the bottom of the rod upwards. Ya.. prob why my knee huuurts. No worries though. It’s getting better and I’m more mobile.

so I'm around 90 posts behind.
Thought of you all this morning as I fell hard on the concrete today, skinning my knee haha. I was running with a new person, and was pointing out an uneven bit of footpath - I'm used to the path so I know it, she has never run it before. But I missed the hollow right before it, caught my foot, and went down in a heap! Talk about embarrassing. got up kept going. just a minor skinning of my knee and bruised ego.
just a gentle 3k today after a lovely 8k yesterday.10 -

From what I understand, only the screws will come out. I’m kinda concerned about the bottom bent one, but have 100% faith and trust that my surgeon knows what’s he’s doing. I am lucky there! I have coxa profunda and protrusio acetabuli on the left, sure I see protrusio acetabuli on the right... I try to read these images and my mri’s but I tell ya, I’m rarely right! Hahaha!

The bent screw will come out fine, provided the sawbones has a big enough screwdriver!
Seriously, hope your recovery goes well.1
